By late summer/early fall 1982, Gail Kobe sent NBC and P&G officials a long-term story projection for Texas written by an anonymous writer. The consensus was that it was a fantastic story project full of heart and excitement. They thought the person who wrote it should become the new HW of Texas.
Kobe then revealed the story projection had been written by actress Pam Long, who had been on the show as Ashley Lindon since March 1981.
Pam had often stopped by Kobe’s office, offering speculation on where she thought some storylines were going and suggestions on how to improve other storylines. So, after a year and a half of hearing Pam’s ideas, Kobe got her to write the long term story projection. Pam wrote a 250-page projection.
Interestingly, Patrick Mulcahey also submitted a long-term story projection for Texas at this point. Mulcahey got his start in soaps writing for the Corringtons on Search and then moved over to Texas with them. He departed Texas soon after the Corringtons did, but P&G liked him and convinced him to go to GL to work with Doug Marland. Then after Marland quit GL in summer 1982, Mulcahey wrote his long-term project for Texas.
Once everyone agreed to installing Pam as HW, Kobe then assigned her secretary, Carolyn Culliton, to work with her, to help her get the scripts properly formatted, as well as keeping up with things like actors’ guarantees for number of shows each week, actors’ vacations, etc. She also helped with the breakdowns.
Thus, the joke became that Texas was being written by an actress and a secretary, but it was completely true.
On a side note, Carolyn Culliton started as Paul Rauch’s secretary and then became Gail Kobe’s secretary when Rauch was fired as Texas EP. Carolyn also helped open the door for her husband, Richard, a playwright, to get into writing soaps. Texas was the first soap Richard Culliton ever wrote for.
After 4-6 weeks as HW, Pam left for maternity leave, writing Ashley out by having her swept away in a flash flood. Once Pam returned from maternity leave, the plan was to reveal Ashley was being held captive in a remote cabin. So, Pam’s intention was to continue acting on the show as well as being HW.
But NBC cancelled Texas, the final episode airing on Dec. 31, 1982. Pam’s scripts only aired for about 4 months. Kobe then was moved over to GL as EP, bringing along both Cullitons as writers. And Kobe was impressed enough by what Pam Long did as the Texas HW that she invited her to come over to be HW of Guiding Light, with Pam’s first scripts airing in late May 1983.
