I don't know how I came up with this in my head. Maybe another show used it as a plot? I want a retro murder mystery that upsets the modern landscape of GH. A skeleton is found in the Hardy house or something and the current cast while figuring things out plays the legacy cast in black and white flashbacks dressed as those characters. I hope I'm explaining it right. I want the murderess to be a young Audrey Hardy. It would probably be something a little too complex for the talent pool of today's soaps though. Jane got a contract because she had all the power in negotiations. ABC begged her to come back; they needed a tentpole and threw a nice deal her way. Drew was played as a man without a personality. Matheson at least gave Drew a pulse. I knew and really liked Billy, but the direction and writing in re: his version of Drew was ridiculously bland. Billy Miller displayed so much personality in his portrayal of Billy Abbott on Y&R, my jaw dropped when they case him as Jason on GH. From a lively, fun-loving and playful Billy to robotic Stone Cold? I remember thinking it was a huge waste of talent.

In the first month or so of starting as Jason, Miller did let give his Jason some personality and a sense of playfulness. But soon after, he shut all that down and began playing Stone Cold. I guess Frank or someone in charge talked to him.

The bottom line is, casting Miller as Jason was a waste of his talent. Frank should have found someone else for him to play.

Making matters worse, when they changed his character to Drew, Miller still played him as emotionless. It was a chance to slowly create a fun, new character and neither the writers, nor Miller, took advantage of it.

Would Miller have not killed himself?

R262 Spencer Cassadine is a core character from a legacy family. Recasting his character to bring him back would make sense. Same goes for Sarah Webber, Dylan Quartermain, maybe even Michael Corinthos if Chad Duell doesn't want to return.

But, say, recasting Hayden would be ridiculously stupid because they only reason they made her Jeff's daughter was to give fan-favorite Rebecca Budig a juicy storyline opposite Becky Herbst. If they want to keep Cameron Mathison around, it could be fun to bring Hayden back but only if played by Budig because of their AMC history.

OTOH, you could make an argument to bring back (or keep) Valentin because he's a Cassadine, but I would hate if he was played by anyone other than James Patrick Stuart because of the indelible impression that JPS leaves.

Oh - I know! - let's bring back Laura Templeton and make her the secret mother of (fill in the blank). Watch them do it.

These Ozempic references are actually pretty funny 😁 when the network traded Roger for Steve, then Van Etten/O'Connor for Mulcahey, Kirsten was apparently placed on notice by the network, to put more effort into her performances, or Maxie would've been written off the show.

Well I'm glad someone said something to Kirsten Storms. Letting her get away with looking and acting like that for so long must have made her feel invincible. KeMo probably also felt invincible. That's the problem at GH, too many invincible pets of Frank and/or the network.

Demi Moore is actually the reason why Chase is Jackie's son; there were even rumored plans to give Blackie Parrish a son. Frank has tried to have John Stamos return, even for a guest stint, however John says the storyline ideas presented just never felt right, which is why he could never agree to return.

In Kelly's case, she had network executives in her back pocket for the longest, even after her falling out with her former bestie Frank in winter 2017. When Nathan began overseeing GH again in the fall of 2023, there were plans to retain lapsed viewers and reinstate GH to a somewhat 90's type era in 2024, which included rehiring Steve, Mulcahey, then eventually Jonathan, while getting rid of Roger, Chris/Dan, Michael, etc. essentially taking back elements of control from Frank and many actors. Steve and Jonathan's returns aren't exactly a hit, while Mulcahey was fired, so it only worked to a certain extent.

I think it’s impossible to grade Mulcahey’s short tenure at GH. He was clearly moving characters around and shaking up relationships but it seems like Frank and Co. really tied his hands. All these years of a lackluster and frustrating show can be traced back to Frank and Company.

Marland recast Frannie with Mary Ellen Stewart, Ellen Dolan took over as Margo, and -- taking the character in a new direction -- Heather Rattray was the new Lily on ATWT.

The show still snared the No. 2 spot behind Y&R as the stories were on fire.

All this was circa 35 years ago. A different world.

Mulcahey's been a well respected and liked writer elsewhere.

But I think his strength has always been in breakdowns and dialogue. He's written some of the best dialogue to ever appear on soaps.

And Steve Burton's Jason is mean to be comedy, too: he's playing a brain-damaged killer as a lovable hero! The two of them are getting all the laughs in my household.

Am I to understand that Portia is being blackmailed and tortured for changing a test result (which had no impact on the outcome), when Sonny shoots a man in cold blood, making his child fatherless, and nobody bats an eye!

I found I didn't like Kim Delaney working on GH either.

She was unappealing and reminiscent of her alcoholic character on NYPD Blue which wasn't a stretch acting wise.

It also was Korte as co-hw as well, who wanted Carly with Jason, though that's not what Steve wanted. Sonny was actually treated like the town pariah with Mulcahey at the helm, for he felt that's how Sonny should be written, yet that's not what Maurice wanted. There were many other noticeable differences as well, yet for many I suppose Mulcahey is an acquired taste. He also planned a coming out story for Aiden, which Frank and Korte were against; same goes for Jake vs. Danny, Ava vs. Nina, etc.

R321 Demi Moore wasn't slated to come back because she apparently wasn't interested in returning, though the rumors at the time were "what if she did agree to come back for a guest stint" when the decision to bring the character back was made. Tristan Rogers spoiled Jackie's return, resulting in Kim Delaney as the recast. Frank most likely didn't have a snowballs chance in hell landing Demi, though he values actor over character and tends to be somewhat starstruck, so the fact that she was on GH brought buzz when Kim Delaney was hired, who in her own right has a "name." The headlines in the press were "a character originated by Demi Moore will now be played by Kim Delaney."

R322 Believe there's somewhat of a misunderstanding; John Stamos wasn't supposed to be Chase's father, there was an idea to give Blackie a son, along with guest spots for John. He was asked to return more than once, yet he declined since according to him, the return ideas didn't exactly seem right; he said that he'd consider a guest return, for the right story.

Patrick was not a good fit for the show, but that doesn't diminish his talent and ability to write soap opera. The issue with Patrick was two-fold, he was not well received behind the scenes, some would go as far as to say he was sabotaged. Also, despite what is said on this particular thread, the fans did not embrace what Patrick was trying to do. GH fans are vocal and scary (maybe not you all, but the other fans). That poor actress who plays Trina got so much racist hate mail, that ABC considered giving her security for a brief time. One actor, encouraged by someone in production, revved up their fans to complain about the writing, which gave the actor ammo when they went to the network to discuss the poor writing.

Oh, and that dysfunctional set is about to get even more dysfunctional. Because of the new soap beating them, calls have been made to Vanessa to "chat"

The last few years we've lost Kin (I don't think he's coming back), Jackie, and, now, Leslie.

I think Denise Alexander's Lesley was the heart and soul of the show from even before Marland took over in 1977. But he certainly kept her front and center. Her exit in 1984 was detrimental to show.

Lesley's resurrection in 1996 wasn't what it could have been because it coincided with Genie going on maternity leave. The show dropped the ball by not bringing back Rick, Ginny, and Rick Jr. around this time to play that out. Instead, Guza ruined Rick, killed him -- all to write off Laura to the looney bin. (HOW is this show still on the air?)

Anyway, there aren't many characters from 40 years ago who could be used to fill that veteran spot. Annie Logan would be a great idea.

Sometimes I can't believe how this show treated Genie Francis. The then teen actress who virtually saved the format. Too bad about Kin. I'm surprise he lasted in the spotlight as long as he did with his serious mental issues. He's had them for a long, long time. He's been somewhat open about his issues. He's said he knew he wasn't right in the head since he was a toddler. Plus he's just a really nice guy.

I think there's room on the canvas for a Laura-Tracy friendship like VIki-Dorian. Both are needed as matriarchs of their families. GH has done Genie Francis wrong over the years in favor of Tony Geary.

I really wanted Genie to make it outside of soaps. You can't say she didn't have the opportunities.

I've seen Genie in a couple interviews. It seems like if she has a regret, it was not staying in NY and turning ABC down when they deliberately had he killed off Ryan's Hope to bring Laura back to GH. She had had some Off Broadway success and that, if anything, is what launches any most actors on to the next level.

I think Laura is an interesting character. She is damaged, chases danger, and needs years on a shrink's couch. Genie, on the other hand, has let her daytime career be damaged by constant complaining and not appearing grateful. I'm not saying that some of the complaints weren't valid, but after a while, people just get tired of hearing about it. If her soap deals were so awful, maybe she needed better representation.

I think she was killed off AMC -- not Ryan's Hope.

Julianne Moore seems to be the one who did it the best. She did her three years on ATWT. Then, she got supporting roles in films including the Hand That Rocks the Cradle and moved up from there.

Tho I wonder what she must think of Demi's success. Demi grew in the part of Jackie but it wasn't like GH needed her. She and Genie did a few scenes together in January 1982 before Miss Star Eyes got kidnapped by the Cassadines.

Demi had an obsessive determination to be a famous movie star that few other people have. Her performances over the years have shown she has more grit than acting talent. She stayed on GH at just the right length and staying in a supporting role helped her not get a cemented image that has kept GF forever tied to the show.

Demi also got an out in her contract to go to Brazil for several months to make Blame It On Rio. Frank would never be so generous today. NAC was the exception because Disney wasn’t going to tell Ryan Murphy he couldn’t have his first choice (even for one of his Netflix projects) because of a daytime soap.

They don't even bother to do a re-take when sputtering Mo blows his lines right off the bat like he did on the phone today. It's not as if he will do it any better the second or third take.

Also, his laugh when he was talking to Laura is as fake and annoying as Snarly's.

Love how Genie's expressive face let the audience know that Laura was calling Turning Woods as soon as she finished listening to late-stage Mike Corbin Jr. mumble on about her and Luke being family.

Douglas Marland worked Steve and Audrey into story by making Steve Jeff's bio dad; Audrey was Annie Logan's aunt.

Jessie took Bobbie in as a roommate; had a later in life romance with Dan Rooney. They were a nice little family unit.

Dan gave Bobbie a whopping $500 (!!!) to pay off Cal Jamison. He didn't need it back and he didn't need to know why. Bobbie broke down in tears We'd love Bobbie one minute and saw her hurting and then we'd hate her for wanting to ship Laura off to reform school.
