Another of Jesse (Darnell Martin)’s great disses to Liza-“You dread skank…” He was hilarious.
I worked for a while on the show. Amanda Bearse was very open about her live-in girlfriend Sandra who was shooting a film with De Niro and Scorsese. Debbi Morgan was a cunt. Darnelll would sometimes mention a male friend named Basile who lived somewhere in the Caribbean. He made it seem pretty clear how important Basile was to him. Louis Edmonds made a point of showing up at the AMC studios on days he wasn’t working just to ogle the very young men mostly models) auditioning for Tad Martin. One of them was Russell Todd. James Mitchell would just roll his eyes at Edmonds. Lucci was always very sweet and friendly, I suspect this was genuine and whatever unpleasant attitudes she had developed over time. I don’t blame her for not being happy with Sarah Michelle Gellar whose flat line readings were the pits. And she was a nasty little bitch, too, according to my hair/make up friends.

In the prior thread, someone incorrectly said that Marcy and Susan rarely had scenes together when she came back to the show. Totally false. They immediately pitted Erica against Liza when Liza became her boss at WRCW. At one point, Erica even moved into the Chandler Mansion with Adam and Liza. He did it to make Liza crazy. Susan and Marcy had great chemistry as foes. I mean how good is this episode from 1995? Her return was amazing but then they gradually made Liza a fragile heroine. AMC always defanged their villainesses.

For what I have heard, the juicy story is all the nubile young men Dack Rambo had around him while he was playing Steve Jacobi on AMC, circa 1982-83.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 8, 2024 5:04 AM |
R4 Catherine Hickland was never Faith. You're thinking about Catherine Hicks but even she was Faith #3. First was Faith Caitlin, straight from Oh, Calcutta!, second was Nancy Barrett from Dark Shadows and then Hicks.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 8, 2024 5:40 AM |
R7 True, there was a weird thing where they writers would send their blond harlots/villainesses down the same path - Natalie, Gloria, Liza.....all tangling with Adam and all going crazy or having some issues to the point of fragility or breakdown.
Natalie/Ross/Palmer/Adam was so electric I think they tried versions of it several more times, with less success. I guess it was the available storyline they had for anyone not named Susan Lucci.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 8, 2024 1:51 PM |
R12- Life at Cortlandt Manor was so good when Ross and Natalie would bang in the stables behind Palmer and Ellen’s backs. They had sizzling chemistry and then they had to go and have Ross rape her. I was so hot for Ross when I was a kid. And to find out later he was gay IRL? Swoon.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 8, 2024 10:58 PM |
I was going to bring up the storyline of Marion, Tad, and Liza. It could have been a joke of a plot but Marcy turned it into a heartbreaking story.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 8, 2024 11:02 PM |
Related to this period of AMC, what was the logic in even temporarily pairing Greg and Amanda? I get that Liza was now occupied with the triangle with Tad and Marion, I know that Jenny didn't stay long with Tony, and I know that Amanda failed to hang onto Greg. But what was Greg's rationale for being with Amanda? Was he that lonely? Was he trying to convince himself it was right?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 9, 2024 12:21 AM |
They never really paired Greg and Amanda. Amanda was in love with Greg since first grade. Then Greg got in his accident and was a gimp. He didn't want to burden Jenny with a crip husband. He saw Amanda as his best friend and allowed her to help him while he was in his Wheels Nelson phase. Amanda was head over heels in love with him but he never noticed. Liza did though(since when did you start wearing makeup and buying new shoes?). Then Amanda realized she was wasting her time and worked, against Enid, to get Jenny and Greg back together. When they did get back together they showed Amanda mooning over a picture of Greg while Laura Branigan sang How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?. Then she left town. I used to love when Liza treated Amanda like shit and Amanda took it LOLOLOL
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 9, 2024 12:27 AM |
Alfred Vanderpool loved Greg too.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 9, 2024 12:33 AM |
Thank you, R23. It's clearer than I thought, especially the bit about Amanda NOT being allies with Enid. I had somehow thought that she was. In my mind, I was imagining the writers thinking they were going to use up whatever final story they figured for Liza/Greg/Jenny, with Amanda acting as the Liza subsitute.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 9, 2024 12:33 AM |
At the start she did work with Enid. Then Greg sent Jenny a letter when he started getting better. Explaining why he broke up with her. Enid stole it. Amanda found it and realized she was just wasting her time. So she stole the letter from Enid and delivered it to Jenny. Thus getting them back together. Cue Laura.....Didn't come her for cyring didn't come her to breakdown it's just a dream of mine is coming to an end.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 9, 2024 12:51 AM |
the continuation of the letter at 2:14. I was sad when Amanda left. I liked her character. She was a plot turner. This letter was a big deal.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 9, 2024 12:56 AM |
Remember when Alfred was going to show "Duck Soup" to the class and it ended up being that porno that had Jenny cut into it? And what about that modeling agency Jenny signed up with. Wasn't it called FOXXXY? And Jesus, one look at Sylvia Miles who headed it up and you knew it was not above board. And then Amanda Bearse and Liza brought Greg to Foxxxys because they knew Jenny was a waitress there. I mean, this is great shit.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 9, 2024 1:58 AM |
R31, I think Foxy's was the dive bar that Jenny first worked at in Pine Valley. It wasn't long, as she was underage. If I recall, Opal was the only one who didn't think it was wrong.

Bringing Marcy back as Liza was a great thing for AMC. Always loved Liza…even “defanged” she was still interesting.
Then that fucker Frons made them give storylines to that trash Krystal that would have been better with either Liza or Brooke. I’ll always hate that Liza, Brooke, and my Simone were pushed out in favor of the Careys and the Laverys.
I can’t even talk about the “Liza” who came back toward the end of AMC’s run..as an attorney for some reason!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 20, 2024 12:37 AM |
AMC insider—were you still there when the divine Kate Collins came aboard? Natalie was my favorite soap character ever.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 20, 2024 12:38 AM |
Brian Frons is the one who decided that the shows should backburner women like Liza on AMC and Felicia on GH because they were over 40. Also pushed Bobbie on GH way to the back burner. That's why Brooke on AMC disappeared from the canvas.
Frons didn't think these characters should be driving story since audiences weren't interested in them once they were past 40. Frons said their value to the show was limited because of their advanced age.
Frons did however allow a few women over 40 to drive story. People like Erica on AMC, Viki and Dorian on OLTL and Tracey on GH (although that had a lot to do with here pairing with Luke).
Incidentally, Frons did the same thing at NBC when he took over as head of daytime there in 1983. He put Bo and Hope on the frontburner and sidelined Doug and Julie --the faces of the show at that point. Being sidelined after driving story for the previous 14-15 years is what caused Doug and Julie to quit a year later.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 20, 2024 8:16 PM |
Yes, Jack Armstrong. Nice looking guy, normally wore glasses (but nit on AMC), very Clark Kent looking. I think he left the business. I suspect he was from a wealthy family and maybe dad convinced him to join the family business.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 25, 2024 1:15 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 25, 2024 1:40 PM |
well he did look like Greg. Was this a Lau i sick replacement or they tried a recast? they should have paired him with fake nina
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 25, 2024 1:45 PM |
Lau kind of came in and out for a couple of years there until the character was totally written out. Dan Scardino also played Greg for a little bit (he was terrible). Bottom line, Greg just wasn’t interesting without Jenny. Armstrong was really cute, though.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 25, 2024 4:12 PM |
Wasn't Armstrong one of the brief Kevin Buchanans? I think he was too white-bread. Kirk Geiger was good (and sexy) and, much later, Dan Gauthier was wonderfully hunky. And I remember Timothy Gibbs as being, well, trying. He was overacting, too intense, and, in the end, annoying.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 25, 2024 4:39 PM |
It felt like Armstrong was Kevin for about 5 minutes, followed by that forgettable Ken something. There was another Kevin who wasn't bad, replaced by Gibbs I think. Gauthier was my favorite Kevin followed by Geiger.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 25, 2024 4:59 PM |
I understand why they had to age up Joey Buchanan with Nathan Fillion, but I'm also liking the smartass attitude Chris McKenna bought to the role. I wonder if my opinion will change if/when I see the Billy Douglas storyline.

Don Scardino was woefully ill suited to dayrine as both Greg on AMC and Chris on AW. Perfectly fine actor but had a pasty white, boring face. Same was true of Brian Lane Green who was an awful Sam replacement on AW.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 26, 2024 9:17 AM |
Scardino was too old for those roles. He was a late 60's/early 70's guy. Trying to make him an Indiana Jones type on Another World was laughable.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | August 26, 2024 9:43 AM |
Brian Lane Green was also a bad Brian Bodine replacement on AMC. They paired him with Dixie for a bit. He was about as convincing as Esther Williams on horseback.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | August 26, 2024 10:30 AM |
Does anyone else remember the scene when Dixie and Brian had sex the first time? They played Human Touch by Bruce Springsteen. This was when Matt Borlenghi played Brian. He and Cady McClain actually had great chemistry which was surprising given how popular their other pairings were (Michael Knight and Kelly Ripa). Cady looked great in this era. That scene always stayed with me. I was 16 at the time. Wish I could find it on YouTube.

How did Susan Lucci manage to maneuver around the mess that was the Prospect Park revival? I'm surprised they got as far as they did without Lucci's involvement. I heard that OLTL/AMC once again became the property of ABC after the new shows folded.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 27, 2024 2:38 AM |
It always felt like Gina's Kelly belonged with Gibbs and Tom's Kelly with Gauthier.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 27, 2024 2:45 AM |
Kevin was supposed to have all of Todd's stories but ABC was chicken shit. I like Geiger and Gibbs in the more dramatic issue stories and Gauthier in love story dramas. I also wondered why he was never paired with with Marty who he had a past with him and became the most popular female tragic heroine for a time there and they never tried to tie her to a Buchanan. Instead they had Kelly running through all the Buchanan boys.

There could be a whole thread about soaps with actors that were pretty but tepid, especially recasts.

I started watching OLTL when I was about in 5th grade. My mother worked so she couldn't watch it. We used to put the tape recorder in front of the TV so she could listen to it while she did her housework when she got home. What I remember from those early days was how long, so so long, they would keep a story arc going. I started watching when Cathy Craig kidnapped Joe and Slee's baby. I swear that story went on for nearly a year. They should have never gotten rid of Cathy Craig. The actress who played her was great.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | August 29, 2024 3:24 PM |
Marty and Kevin would have a good pairing. Loved Kevin Stapleton as Kevin and his pairing with Cassie was on of the characters best.

I go back and forth between Timothy Gibbs and Dan Gaultier but I think my favorite Kevin was/is Dan. Handsome, good actor, a bit of a sense of humor. I know Kevin and Joey weren't Clint's bio sons but Dan really captured best who I'd imagine the oldest son of Clint to be.

He was a bit dark but I did enjoy the Claire Labine written Kevin for Gibbs that couldn't understand why his mother would have sympathy for his former friend and biggest enemy who almost ruined his life. Brother or not. There was a nice color of anger toward her that I thought made Kevin more interesting.

Tonja Walker gossip. When she joined OLTL, she went to The Wiz (early 90’s - Nobody beats the Wiz) and bought a tv/vcr combo so she could tape her scenes and watch them. Everyone at OLTL (except Queen Viki Erika Slezak) had to share a dressing room. Tonja presented her dressing room partner with the bill from The Wiz and said you owe me half since we’re sharing a dressing room. Her dressing room partner said no thanks, I’ll never touch that thing. lolololol

I remember when AMC did a version of the “hot priest” with Brooke. He was played by hunky David Beecroft (damn, those Beecroft boys had some good genes) and I was into the storyline…get you some younger man priest dick, Brooke!
It ended abruptly when it inexplicably turned out he was actually Stan, the drunk driver who killed Brooke’s daughter Laura years and years before. Very weird twist.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | August 31, 2024 10:24 AM |
R100 I never understood that story. I mean maybe if they had dragged it out for years it would have been something. But it immediately hit the rocks because Brooke wasn't going to forgive him.

I know that winning two Emmys isn’t exactly “underrated,” but I do feel like Julia Barr isn’t appreciated enough as one of the best soap actresses ever. Certainly not by that mother fucker Frons who got rid of her. Maybe because she was never over the top?
You can have your Slut of Springfield speeches and your hooker courtroom revelations, but to me, Brooke finding out her daughter had been killed by a drunk driver is the best bit of soap acting ever.

When I first started watching, Brooke wasn’t on. She showed up later and I remember asking my mom who she was, and she said that’s the REAL Brooke. I think she wasn’t back in Pine Valley for long when Tom’s friend raped her. I saw an old clip of that fake Brooke. She was terrible. Julia Barr was actually the second Brooke. I wasn’t aware of that for a long time. I think the first one was only on for a short time.

That brief Hulu reboot of AMC was pretty good, like old AMC, even without big leaguers like Lucci, Canary, and Knight. They paired Brooke with Dimitri, and it worked. I think if it had been a couple of years later and people were more used to streaming, it would have lasted.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | August 31, 2024 7:05 PM |
R111 agree, the AMC reboot was leap years better than the OLTL one. They were about 6-7 years too early.
Now that DAYS is on The Cock, people are more in tune with the idea of streaming soap.

R107 i agree with you. Laura's death and Marty's gang rape had very special acting moments for those actresses. They did some stuff that was better than Judy Light's monumentally famous performance ..

No one will ever match Judith Light’s performance on the witness stand. Ever. I’ve watched the Julia Barr scenes where she learns that Laura died. They’re good, not great. Judith was great.

Honestly though Brooke was more important to AMC than Karen was to OLTL. After the witness stand every Karen story sucked. I mean for fuck's sake they had her and Marco working as carnies. Then I think she was in the jungle. Everything else about her fat ass isn't too memorable.

I’m waiting for the inevitable post that Judy Light’s courtroom scenes were studied in acting classes.

She was so fucking fat. Remember that polka dot dress she wore all the time? I'm so sad. I'm so sad. Get a job bitch.

I thought Nora and her courtroom speech is some of the shows best!

Nora was no Karen Wolek! Not by a long shot.

Meh. I never got the adoration of Karen Wolek. Any middling actress could have pulled it off. The only reason it gets so much attention it was just such an unheard of, original plot. Most of the credit goes to the writers and Mr. Herb Callison. I like the pretty, ditzy version of Karen a lot more.

Nora's stunning summation at Marty's rape trial is on par with Light. Especially the scenes in the bathroom before where she talks to Rachel about knowing she's defending 3 rapists without saying it. She was fantastic with Haskell in the bathroom sequence too because it was the first time in their relationship and dynamic that Nora was low key apologizing. "I know you've always seen me as a desperate, pathetic, liar. But I did not lie about this. And I think you know it".
