Is there a Tercel that goes from Pine Valley to Llanview?

Anna, I just don't know what to do about Carla.

OP, I love you.

by Anonymousreply 1August 7, 2024 3:03 AM

Another of Jesse (Darnell Martin)’s great disses to Liza-“You dread skank…” He was hilarious.

I worked for a while on the show. Amanda Bearse was very open about her live-in girlfriend Sandra who was shooting a film with De Niro and Scorsese. Debbi Morgan was a cunt. Darnelll would sometimes mention a male friend named Basile who lived somewhere in the Caribbean. He made it seem pretty clear how important Basile was to him. Louis Edmonds made a point of showing up at the AMC studios on days he wasn’t working just to ogle the very young men mostly models) auditioning for Tad Martin. One of them was Russell Todd. James Mitchell would just roll his eyes at Edmonds. Lucci was always very sweet and friendly, I suspect this was genuine and whatever unpleasant attitudes she had developed over time. I don’t blame her for not being happy with Sarah Michelle Gellar whose flat line readings were the pits. And she was a nasty little bitch, too, according to my hair/make up friends.

Back to Catherine Hickland as Lindsey! Name a better OLTL villain in the shows final decade…

by Anonymousreply 3August 7, 2024 2:51 PM

Catherine was the first Faith on Ryan's Hope.

by Anonymousreply 4August 7, 2024 2:53 PM

I’d completely forgotten about Tercels!

by Anonymousreply 5August 7, 2024 2:57 PM

It should have been: Anna, I just don't know what to do about Clara.

by Anonymousreply 6August 7, 2024 3:01 PM

In the prior thread, someone incorrectly said that Marcy and Susan rarely had scenes together when she came back to the show. Totally false. They immediately pitted Erica against Liza when Liza became her boss at WRCW. At one point, Erica even moved into the Chandler Mansion with Adam and Liza. He did it to make Liza crazy. Susan and Marcy had great chemistry as foes. I mean how good is this episode from 1995? Her return was amazing but then they gradually made Liza a fragile heroine. AMC always defanged their villainesses.

R2- love this. What did you do for the show? Tell us more. How was Ruth Warrick? Kim Delaney? Marcy Walker? Taylor Miller? More, more, more please.

by Anonymousreply 8August 8, 2024 12:55 AM

R2. I'd love to hear more about James Mitchell!

by Anonymousreply 9August 8, 2024 1:03 AM

For what I have heard, the juicy story is all the nubile young men Dack Rambo had around him while he was playing Steve Jacobi on AMC, circa 1982-83.

by Anonymousreply 10August 8, 2024 5:04 AM

R4 Catherine Hickland was never Faith. You're thinking about Catherine Hicks but even she was Faith #3. First was Faith Caitlin, straight from Oh, Calcutta!, second was Nancy Barrett from Dark Shadows and then Hicks.

by Anonymousreply 11August 8, 2024 5:40 AM

R7 True, there was a weird thing where they writers would send their blond harlots/villainesses down the same path - Natalie, Gloria, Liza.....all tangling with Adam and all going crazy or having some issues to the point of fragility or breakdown.

Natalie/Ross/Palmer/Adam was so electric I think they tried versions of it several more times, with less success. I guess it was the available storyline they had for anyone not named Susan Lucci.

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2024 1:51 PM

R12- Life at Cortlandt Manor was so good when Ross and Natalie would bang in the stables behind Palmer and Ellen’s backs. They had sizzling chemistry and then they had to go and have Ross rape her. I was so hot for Ross when I was a kid. And to find out later he was gay IRL? Swoon.

by Anonymousreply 13August 8, 2024 10:21 PM

Ross could have tickled me with his mustache. DADDY!

by Anonymousreply 14August 8, 2024 10:29 PM

Lillian Haymen’s memoir - Driving Miss Viki, Tales From The Tercel is a must read. It should be made into a movie.

by Anonymousreply 15August 8, 2024 10:33 PM

Love that clip of Erika and Liza. Wow was Susan Lucci looking good in that episode. Marcy was always great but yeah they defanged her.

by Anonymousreply 16August 8, 2024 10:36 PM

Lindsey really was the best. I'm glad they brought her back for the finale.

by Anonymousreply 17August 8, 2024 10:42 PM

I'm surprised Clara was never sent to the Loving purgatory.

by Anonymousreply 18August 8, 2024 10:52 PM

A shame Marcy never won an Emmy for Liza. She was damn good.

More from behind the scenes at AMC! (And OLTL, please.)

by Anonymousreply 20August 8, 2024 10:58 PM

I was going to bring up the storyline of Marion, Tad, and Liza. It could have been a joke of a plot but Marcy turned it into a heartbreaking story.

by Anonymousreply 21August 8, 2024 11:02 PM

Related to this period of AMC, what was the logic in even temporarily pairing Greg and Amanda? I get that Liza was now occupied with the triangle with Tad and Marion, I know that Jenny didn't stay long with Tony, and I know that Amanda failed to hang onto Greg. But what was Greg's rationale for being with Amanda? Was he that lonely? Was he trying to convince himself it was right?

by Anonymousreply 22August 9, 2024 12:21 AM

They never really paired Greg and Amanda. Amanda was in love with Greg since first grade. Then Greg got in his accident and was a gimp. He didn't want to burden Jenny with a crip husband. He saw Amanda as his best friend and allowed her to help him while he was in his Wheels Nelson phase. Amanda was head over heels in love with him but he never noticed. Liza did though(since when did you start wearing makeup and buying new shoes?). Then Amanda realized she was wasting her time and worked, against Enid, to get Jenny and Greg back together. When they did get back together they showed Amanda mooning over a picture of Greg while Laura Branigan sang How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?. Then she left town. I used to love when Liza treated Amanda like shit and Amanda took it LOLOLOL

by Anonymousreply 23August 9, 2024 12:27 AM

Alfred Vanderpool loved Greg too.

by Anonymousreply 24August 9, 2024 12:33 AM

Thank you, R23. It's clearer than I thought, especially the bit about Amanda NOT being allies with Enid. I had somehow thought that she was. In my mind, I was imagining the writers thinking they were going to use up whatever final story they figured for Liza/Greg/Jenny, with Amanda acting as the Liza subsitute.

by Anonymousreply 25August 9, 2024 12:33 AM

At the start she did work with Enid. Then Greg sent Jenny a letter when he started getting better. Explaining why he broke up with her. Enid stole it. Amanda found it and realized she was just wasting her time. So she stole the letter from Enid and delivered it to Jenny. Thus getting them back together. Cue Laura.....Didn't come her for cyring didn't come her to breakdown it's just a dream of mine is coming to an end.

by Anonymousreply 26August 9, 2024 12:37 AM

Alfred VanDerPool...

Enid was a HUGE cunt!

by Anonymousreply 27August 9, 2024 12:39 AM

They gave Alfred the Faux Silver treatment. Put a big pair of glasses on him and everyone will think he's a nerd.

by Anonymousreply 28August 9, 2024 12:41 AM

I stand corrected. The post is pretty correct except Jenny wrote Greg the letter. Enid and Amanda at 4:44

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 29August 9, 2024 12:51 AM

the continuation of the letter at 2:14. I was sad when Amanda left. I liked her character. She was a plot turner. This letter was a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 30August 9, 2024 12:56 AM

Remember when Alfred was going to show "Duck Soup" to the class and it ended up being that porno that had Jenny cut into it? And what about that modeling agency Jenny signed up with. Wasn't it called FOXXXY? And Jesus, one look at Sylvia Miles who headed it up and you knew it was not above board. And then Amanda Bearse and Liza brought Greg to Foxxxys because they knew Jenny was a waitress there. I mean, this is great shit.

by Anonymousreply 31August 9, 2024 1:58 AM

R31, I think Foxy's was the dive bar that Jenny first worked at in Pine Valley. It wasn't long, as she was underage. If I recall, Opal was the only one who didn't think it was wrong.

by Anonymousreply 32August 10, 2024 2:51 AM

I think you're right r32. And more specific, I think Foxy's was in Center City.

Referring to Slee as "the third Victoria" is a delicious level of shade to which I can only aspire.

Did Slee attend Ellen Holly’s memorial service?

by Anonymousreply 37August 10, 2024 4:20 PM

Yes, R37, and she got all the closeups in the news coverage.

by Anonymousreply 38August 10, 2024 4:22 PM

Yes r37, she yelled “get that black bitch’s corpse out of my face.”

by Anonymousreply 39August 10, 2024 4:27 PM

Lil's Tercel will be the name of my new band.

by Anonymousreply 40August 19, 2024 11:59 PM

Aww I love that picture at r35. Still has real Jennie, Brad, and Sam. Although I must say nuSam was really good. They put her front burner for a while. Her drowning while pregnant was a good way for her to go oh they have fun Karen too. Pat Ashley sure had some hair. How did ugly ass Mahjong Anna get front and center? I did love how everyone called Carla by her passing name but Lil never stopped calling her Clara.

There's that evil little Brian Kendall sitting on Jim's lap.

by Anonymousreply 42August 20, 2024 12:20 AM

R35, now I have to know about George Reinholt recording the show’s theme…

by Anonymousreply 43August 20, 2024 12:35 AM

Bringing Marcy back as Liza was a great thing for AMC. Always loved Liza…even “defanged” she was still interesting.

Then that fucker Frons made them give storylines to that trash Krystal that would have been better with either Liza or Brooke. I’ll always hate that Liza, Brooke, and my Simone were pushed out in favor of the Careys and the Laverys.

I can’t even talk about the “Liza” who came back toward the end of AMC’s run..as an attorney for some reason!

by Anonymousreply 44August 20, 2024 12:37 AM

AMC insider—were you still there when the divine Kate Collins came aboard? Natalie was my favorite soap character ever.

by Anonymousreply 45August 20, 2024 12:38 AM

Brian Frons is the one who decided that the shows should backburner women like Liza on AMC and Felicia on GH because they were over 40. Also pushed Bobbie on GH way to the back burner. That's why Brooke on AMC disappeared from the canvas.

Frons didn't think these characters should be driving story since audiences weren't interested in them once they were past 40. Frons said their value to the show was limited because of their advanced age.

Frons did however allow a few women over 40 to drive story. People like Erica on AMC, Viki and Dorian on OLTL and Tracey on GH (although that had a lot to do with here pairing with Luke).

Incidentally, Frons did the same thing at NBC when he took over as head of daytime there in 1983. He put Bo and Hope on the frontburner and sidelined Doug and Julie --the faces of the show at that point. Being sidelined after driving story for the previous 14-15 years is what caused Doug and Julie to quit a year later.

by Anonymousreply 46August 20, 2024 12:51 AM

Paul - she’s over here! Slee, helping Rauch fire Lil.

by Anonymousreply 47August 20, 2024 4:49 AM

Hated fake Liza. Anyone remember who the VERY brief fake Greg was?

by Anonymousreply 48August 20, 2024 8:16 PM

Yes, Jack Armstrong. Nice looking guy, normally wore glasses (but nit on AMC), very Clark Kent looking. I think he left the business. I suspect he was from a wealthy family and maybe dad convinced him to join the family business.

by Anonymousreply 49August 25, 2024 1:15 PM

He’s still acting. Or at least up until 2021.

by Anonymousreply 50August 25, 2024 1:40 PM

well he did look like Greg. Was this a Lau i sick replacement or they tried a recast? they should have paired him with fake nina

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 51August 25, 2024 1:45 PM

Lau kind of came in and out for a couple of years there until the character was totally written out. Dan Scardino also played Greg for a little bit (he was terrible). Bottom line, Greg just wasn’t interesting without Jenny. Armstrong was really cute, though.

by Anonymousreply 52August 25, 2024 4:12 PM

Wasn't Armstrong one of the brief Kevin Buchanans? I think he was too white-bread. Kirk Geiger was good (and sexy) and, much later, Dan Gauthier was wonderfully hunky. And I remember Timothy Gibbs as being, well, trying. He was overacting, too intense, and, in the end, annoying.

by Anonymousreply 53August 25, 2024 4:39 PM

It felt like Armstrong was Kevin for about 5 minutes, followed by that forgettable Ken something. There was another Kevin who wasn't bad, replaced by Gibbs I think. Gauthier was my favorite Kevin followed by Geiger.

by Anonymousreply 54August 25, 2024 4:59 PM

I understand why they had to age up Joey Buchanan with Nathan Fillion, but I'm also liking the smartass attitude Chris McKenna bought to the role. I wonder if my opinion will change if/when I see the Billy Douglas storyline.

by Anonymousreply 55August 25, 2024 5:48 PM

Timothy Gibbs was everything.

by Anonymousreply 56August 25, 2024 5:55 PM

I just watched the SATC episode where Miranda dates a cop who is so hot she feels he’s out of her league. Timothy Gibbs was perfectly cast.

by Anonymousreply 57August 25, 2024 6:08 PM

I think Timothy was on OLTL for about a week.

by Anonymousreply 58August 25, 2024 6:14 PM

Gauthier was the ultimate Kevin. Had the looks, charm, a bit of the gray antihero, entitled, looked good in and out of a suit…

by Anonymousreply 59August 25, 2024 6:14 PM

Pity they didn't take his clothes off more, as they did with John LoPrieno. The image of him in a tiny speedo under the waterfall is seared into my mind. Talk about VPL!

by Anonymousreply 60August 25, 2024 7:18 PM

Don Scardino was woefully ill suited to dayrine as both Greg on AMC and Chris on AW. Perfectly fine actor but had a pasty white, boring face. Same was true of Brian Lane Green who was an awful Sam replacement on AW.

by Anonymousreply 61August 26, 2024 8:31 AM

I still want Tim Gibbs inside me quite deeply!

by Anonymousreply 62August 26, 2024 9:17 AM

Scardino was too old for those roles. He was a late 60's/early 70's guy. Trying to make him an Indiana Jones type on Another World was laughable.

by Anonymousreply 63August 26, 2024 9:43 AM

Brian Lane Green was also a bad Brian Bodine replacement on AMC. They paired him with Dixie for a bit. He was about as convincing as Esther Williams on horseback.

by Anonymousreply 64August 26, 2024 10:30 AM

Does anyone else remember the scene when Dixie and Brian had sex the first time? They played Human Touch by Bruce Springsteen. This was when Matt Borlenghi played Brian. He and Cady McClain actually had great chemistry which was surprising given how popular their other pairings were (Michael Knight and Kelly Ripa). Cady looked great in this era. That scene always stayed with me. I was 16 at the time. Wish I could find it on YouTube.

by Anonymousreply 65August 26, 2024 11:35 AM

How did Susan Lucci manage to maneuver around the mess that was the Prospect Park revival? I'm surprised they got as far as they did without Lucci's involvement. I heard that OLTL/AMC once again became the property of ABC after the new shows folded.

by Anonymousreply 66August 27, 2024 2:38 AM

It always felt like Gina's Kelly belonged with Gibbs and Tom's Kelly with Gauthier.

by Anonymousreply 67August 27, 2024 2:45 AM

Kevin was supposed to have all of Todd's stories but ABC was chicken shit. I like Geiger and Gibbs in the more dramatic issue stories and Gauthier in love story dramas. I also wondered why he was never paired with with Marty who he had a past with him and became the most popular female tragic heroine for a time there and they never tried to tie her to a Buchanan. Instead they had Kelly running through all the Buchanan boys.

by Anonymousreply 68August 29, 2024 3:55 AM

Yes, Jack Armstrong was a bad recast twice.

by Anonymousreply 69August 29, 2024 4:00 AM

[quote] Don Scardino was woefully ill suited to dayrine as both Greg on AMC and Chris on AW. Perfectly fine actor but had a pasty white, boring face. Same was true of Brian Lane Green who was an awful Sam replacement on AW.

There could be a whole thread about soaps with actors that were pretty but tepid, especially recasts.

Most of the various Hart Jessups on GL were pretty milquetoast, except for the hot Armie Hammer lookalike that became paralyzed, and of course, Suddenly Eyetalian Hart, Frankie Grillo.

by Anonymousreply 70August 29, 2024 4:09 AM

So Dorian Strassman was hated by everyone? Miss Frankie Valentini was a little inebriated this past weekend on the hamptons spilling the dirt.

JOE KELLY IS DEAD!

by Anonymousreply 73August 29, 2024 2:56 PM

Dear gawd, why'd you have to kill such hot dick?

by Anonymousreply 74August 29, 2024 3:21 PM

I started watching OLTL when I was about in 5th grade. My mother worked so she couldn't watch it. We used to put the tape recorder in front of the TV so she could listen to it while she did her housework when she got home. What I remember from those early days was how long, so so long, they would keep a story arc going. I started watching when Cathy Craig kidnapped Joe and Slee's baby. I swear that story went on for nearly a year. They should have never gotten rid of Cathy Craig. The actress who played her was great.

by Anonymousreply 75August 29, 2024 3:24 PM

Marty and Kevin would have a good pairing. Loved Kevin Stapleton as Kevin and his pairing with Cassie was on of the characters best.

by Anonymousreply 76August 29, 2024 5:30 PM

I go back and forth between Timothy Gibbs and Dan Gaultier but I think my favorite Kevin was/is Dan. Handsome, good actor, a bit of a sense of humor. I know Kevin and Joey weren't Clint's bio sons but Dan really captured best who I'd imagine the oldest son of Clint to be.

Bless Tim Gibbs, though. That man was so fucking sexy.

by Anonymousreply 77August 29, 2024 7:30 PM

So sexy but dark Kevin was a miscast!

by Anonymousreply 78August 29, 2024 7:36 PM

I can't remember his name. Kind of a useless post. When they first aged Slee's spawn the first couple of older ones they had were just AWFUL.

by Anonymousreply 79August 29, 2024 8:48 PM

Yes, I didn't like them atall.

by Anonymousreply 80August 30, 2024 12:38 AM

Wasn’t Nathan Fillion one of Slee’s spawns?

by Anonymousreply 81August 30, 2024 3:45 AM

R81 Yes, he played one of the Joeys.

The one that ended up clearing the cobwebs out of Dorian's cooter.

by Anonymousreply 82August 30, 2024 3:46 AM

He was a bit dark but I did enjoy the Claire Labine written Kevin for Gibbs that couldn't understand why his mother would have sympathy for his former friend and biggest enemy who almost ruined his life. Brother or not. There was a nice color of anger toward her that I thought made Kevin more interesting.

by Anonymousreply 83August 30, 2024 3:52 AM

Joey also suffered from horrible recasts. Like Chris McKenna and Nathan Fillion…the rest pale in comparison. Bruce “Priest Joey” Hall was by far the hottest.

by Anonymousreply 84August 30, 2024 9:41 PM

Don Jeffcoat was no Nathan Fillion.

by Anonymousreply 85August 30, 2024 10:07 PM

Don Jeffcoat was OK but definitely B level to Nathan and Chris.

Chris was so fucking hot on Y&R.

by Anonymousreply 86August 30, 2024 10:11 PM

Bring Chris McKenna back! You don't find that kind of raw hotness often.

by Anonymousreply 87August 30, 2024 10:38 PM

It seems silly because I can't even remember his name now but I LOVED the romance between Cassie and the Priest.

by Anonymousreply 88August 30, 2024 10:42 PM

Andrew

by Anonymousreply 89August 30, 2024 10:49 PM

Tonja Walker gossip. When she joined OLTL, she went to The Wiz (early 90’s - Nobody beats the Wiz) and bought a tv/vcr combo so she could tape her scenes and watch them. Everyone at OLTL (except Queen Viki Erika Slezak) had to share a dressing room. Tonja presented her dressing room partner with the bill from The Wiz and said you owe me half since we’re sharing a dressing room. Her dressing room partner said no thanks, I’ll never touch that thing. lolololol

by Anonymousreply 90August 31, 2024 12:57 AM

I forgot about Tonja. She was fucking amazing.

by Anonymousreply 91August 31, 2024 1:02 AM

^To be clear, Tonja bought the tv/vcr to put in the dressing room so she could record the in house feed of rehearsals. Tonja also insisted of proudly displaying her 8 x 10 framed photo of her cast credit from General Hospital. The OLTL folks were not impressed. Tonja’s a piece of work.

by Anonymousreply 92August 31, 2024 1:04 AM

she was magic on screen though. A nutcase but you can't deny how good she was.

by Anonymousreply 93August 31, 2024 1:08 AM

Andrew.

by Anonymousreply 94August 31, 2024 1:09 AM

I'm trying to remember how and why Cassie and Andrew ended. I'll have to googie it. They were such a major storyline for a while then they were like lets wrap this up on the next episode. It was odd.

by Anonymousreply 95August 31, 2024 1:21 AM

Having seen Tonja in action behind the scenes, she’s a nutjob and wasn’t nice to people. She held up production. She came in with an attitude that she had been on General Hospital so bow down to me that I’m doing your measly OLTL. I can’t erase what I saw of her personally. Nasty egotistical bitch. And now to find out she’s a Trump supporter, forget it!

by Anonymousreply 96August 31, 2024 1:23 AM

I wonder who Tonja shared a dressing room with? Karen Witter?

by Anonymousreply 97August 31, 2024 2:11 AM

One of the black bitches.

by Anonymousreply 98August 31, 2024 2:12 AM

Reverend Andrew was the original Hot Priest.

The American version of the Dishy Vicar.

by Anonymousreply 99August 31, 2024 3:53 AM

I remember when AMC did a version of the “hot priest” with Brooke. He was played by hunky David Beecroft (damn, those Beecroft boys had some good genes) and I was into the storyline…get you some younger man priest dick, Brooke!

It ended abruptly when it inexplicably turned out he was actually Stan, the drunk driver who killed Brooke’s daughter Laura years and years before. Very weird twist.

by Anonymousreply 101August 31, 2024 10:29 AM

R100 I never understood that story. I mean maybe if they had dragged it out for years it would have been something. But it immediately hit the rocks because Brooke wasn't going to forgive him.

Greg Beecroft has his name over many of my jerk off sessions. Truly beautiful men.

by Anonymousreply 102August 31, 2024 2:17 PM

They kept giving Brooke the most needlessly tortured love or near-love stories. Wasn't there ANY good man in Pine Valley?

by Anonymousreply 103August 31, 2024 3:16 PM

When our generation is gone, who will tell the stories of the Tercel and Paul Rauch and Pat Ashley's BJs?

by Anonymousreply 104August 31, 2024 3:45 PM

My mom was so upset when they broke up Brooke and Tom. She LOVED Tom Cudahy. He was a hot piece when he was young.

by Anonymousreply 105August 31, 2024 3:58 PM

I liked Brooke with nearly all the males they paired her with. I did like the stories that were generated when she was paired with Adam though. Julia was the Meryl of daytime. Slee was the G.

by Anonymousreply 106August 31, 2024 4:16 PM

I know that winning two Emmys isn’t exactly “underrated,” but I do feel like Julia Barr isn’t appreciated enough as one of the best soap actresses ever. Certainly not by that mother fucker Frons who got rid of her. Maybe because she was never over the top?

You can have your Slut of Springfield speeches and your hooker courtroom revelations, but to me, Brooke finding out her daughter had been killed by a drunk driver is the best bit of soap acting ever.

by Anonymousreply 107August 31, 2024 4:26 PM

remember the brief fakeBrooke they had for a little while? God she sucked. Almost as bad as nuNina.

by Anonymousreply 108August 31, 2024 4:28 PM

When I first started watching, Brooke wasn’t on. She showed up later and I remember asking my mom who she was, and she said that’s the REAL Brooke. I think she wasn’t back in Pine Valley for long when Tom’s friend raped her. I saw an old clip of that fake Brooke. She was terrible. Julia Barr was actually the second Brooke. I wasn’t aware of that for a long time. I think the first one was only on for a short time.

by Anonymousreply 109August 31, 2024 6:41 PM

Julia was recruited from Ryan's Hope where she played gold digger Reenie Szabo. I agree she was a rock on AMC, such a steady, calming presence.

by Anonymousreply 110August 31, 2024 6:54 PM

That brief Hulu reboot of AMC was pretty good, like old AMC, even without big leaguers like Lucci, Canary, and Knight. They paired Brooke with Dimitri, and it worked. I think if it had been a couple of years later and people were more used to streaming, it would have lasted.

by Anonymousreply 111August 31, 2024 7:05 PM

R111 agree, the AMC reboot was leap years better than the OLTL one. They were about 6-7 years too early.

Now that DAYS is on The Cock, people are more in tune with the idea of streaming soap.

R107 i agree with you. Laura's death and Marty's gang rape had very special acting moments for those actresses. They did some stuff that was better than Judy Light's monumentally famous performance ..

by Anonymousreply 113September 2, 2024 5:16 AM

No one will ever match Judith Light’s performance on the witness stand. Ever. I’ve watched the Julia Barr scenes where she learns that Laura died. They’re good, not great. Judith was great.

by Anonymousreply 114September 2, 2024 5:02 PM

Honestly though Brooke was more important to AMC than Karen was to OLTL. After the witness stand every Karen story sucked. I mean for fuck's sake they had her and Marco working as carnies. Then I think she was in the jungle. Everything else about her fat ass isn't too memorable.

by Anonymousreply 115September 2, 2024 7:21 PM

I’m waiting for the inevitable post that Judy Light’s courtroom scenes were studied in acting classes.

She was so fucking fat. Remember that polka dot dress she wore all the time? I'm so sad. I'm so sad. Get a job bitch.

I thought Nora and her courtroom speech is some of the shows best!

by Anonymousreply 118September 5, 2024 1:38 AM

Nora was no Karen Wolek! Not by a long shot.

by Anonymousreply 119September 5, 2024 1:39 AM

Meh. I never got the adoration of Karen Wolek. Any middling actress could have pulled it off. The only reason it gets so much attention it was just such an unheard of, original plot. Most of the credit goes to the writers and Mr. Herb Callison. I like the pretty, ditzy version of Karen a lot more.

by Anonymousreply 120September 5, 2024 2:12 AM

Nora's stunning summation at Marty's rape trial is on par with Light. Especially the scenes in the bathroom before where she talks to Rachel about knowing she's defending 3 rapists without saying it. She was fantastic with Haskell in the bathroom sequence too because it was the first time in their relationship and dynamic that Nora was low key apologizing. "I know you've always seen me as a desperate, pathetic, liar. But I did not lie about this. And I think you know it".

I would file this project (that will not see the light of day) as so pointless. Who wants to see an octogenarian Erica Kane flounce around like an ingenue? Moreover, most of the greats are deceased at this point. If they want to mine AMc IP, they should go into the vault and edit a series of Greatest Stories and package for Hulu. Imagine if you could relive some of the best storylines in a newly edited way. I feel like fans would go apeshit if they could just hit click on, one example, Jenny & Greg’s Love Story: 10 episodes. Let’s eschew with a modern reboot and do that.

by Anonymousreply 127September 11, 2024 8:23 PM

Seeing the old episodes would be great. I love your idea of repackaging them r126.

For the old P&G soaps where the od episodes no longer exist they could retell certain storylines as period pieces. But that's an expensive pipe dream.

by Anonymousreply 128September 11, 2024 8:32 PM

I know most are lost but there's not telling what I'd pay or a complete box set of AMC. OLTL I'd only want Clara's passing story, Jenny and Tim's doomed love affair, and to see Gillian Spencer playing Victoria. Oh and all the OG Dorain moments.

by Anonymousreply 133September 11, 2024 10:06 PM

I wasn't watching then but "the death of Meredith Lord" would occasionally come up among soap columnists as a mistake.

Anyone care to elaborate? Couldn't they have kept both?

I believe Trash Van Devere was an early casting of Meredith.

by Anonymousreply 134September 11, 2024 10:21 PM

I’d love an edited version of all the stories around Cortlandt Manor 86-87. Palmer, Natalie, Ellen, Ross, Julie, Nina, Matt, etc. Natalie being raped by Ross, Julie running away, Ross’s trial, etc. Good stuff.

In addition to the Jenny and Greg story, they could do the romances of Cliff & Nina, Angie & Jesse, Noah & Julia…etc.

They could also do: Who Killed Zach?

Who Killed Will?

Bianca’s coming out

The gay storyline with teacher Micheal Delaney, which grew into Laurel being killed at WRCW and the Kevin/Kelsey storyline

Brooke-Adam-Dixie-Tad/Laura’s death

Erica’s pill addiction

And of course…NATALIE IN THE WELL

by Anonymousreply 135September 11, 2024 10:24 PM

I only know of Meredith after her death. I think I started watching when I was a kid right after she died. The main story was Larry getting over her death and soon after that Karen entering his life. The first Karen was a fun loving party girl and everyone thought that was what Larry needed. The first Karen really was a hoot. I don't know the reasoning behind her death but it's pretty much acknowledged it was a huge mistake. Up until her death Meredith was Viki's crutch. She died when robbers took over their house and pushed her and she hit her head or something like that. From what I'v read about the fan uproar was immense. Meredith was much more popular than Victoria. She was actually the female romantic lead.

by Anonymousreply 136September 11, 2024 10:26 PM

Wiki does a pretty good write up of Meredith. It's pretty easy to see she was the star more than Victoria. At the time anyway.

by Anonymousreply 138September 11, 2024 10:46 PM

Meredith was not the star at tall!!

by Anonymousreply 139September 12, 2024 2:09 AM

Meredith was the young heroine of the show, and Viki was the crazy sister who was obsessed with her father. I think Viki became big again after Meredith died. Then, the show brought on Pat Ashley, and she became the star. When the Pat character was written out, Viki became a top dawg again. Go to the Paley Center to watch some of Gillian Spencer's scenes as Viki and Niki to be blown away.

by Anonymousreply 140September 12, 2024 2:17 AM

Who would you rather write for? Gillian Spencer or Slee? I'd love to see Gillian as Viki. It was probably a whole different character without that ham salad slee playing her.

by Anonymousreply 141September 12, 2024 3:35 AM

I remember how big Pat Ashley was on the show and then one day she was gone. I wonder why? I loved her evil twin story.

by Anonymousreply 142September 12, 2024 3:46 AM

Jacqueline Courtney was a big name when she joined OLTL in 1975. She had been the star of Another World in one of the hottest romance triangles of that day, the Steve-Alice-Rachel triangle which had gone on for seven years. However, she was ultimately fired by Paul Rauch, who was the AW EP.

Courtney initially was just another cast member at OLTL, but she then became the center of the show under the reign of Joseph Stuart, who was EP from 1977 to 1983.

Stuart and Courtney were also lovers, which is likely how/why Courtney became the center of the show.

Stuart left OLTL to launch Loving in early 1983. The moment Stuart was gone, Courtney's screen time began to get small and smaller.

Paul Rauch, who had been fired as EP of Another World in early 1983, came aboard OLTL as a producer in summer 1983 (and became EP in 1984). However, before Rauch joined the show, he insisted the Jacqueline Courtney be fired and ABC obliged him.

And once Courtney was gone, I don't think the Pat Ashley character was ever mentioned again.

by Anonymousreply 143September 12, 2024 5:49 AM

This is Pat Ashley, reporting from Paris.

by Anonymousreply 144September 12, 2024 6:03 AM

We should all remember that Pat Ashley was the mother of one of Victor Lord's grandchildren, Brian Kendall, by Tony Lord. Also, her husband Paul Kendall was played by the beautiful Tom Fuccello, RIP.

by Anonymousreply 145September 12, 2024 10:48 AM

This was one of the more interesting periods of OLTL. They promoted both Courtney and George Reinholt heavily. The show may have gotten a ratings bump, but Reinholt slowly fell into old habits, began acting like a fool again, and was fired. The romance with Joe Riley really helped the Viki character become popular. Then there was crazy Marcy Wade and Cathy Craig.

by Anonymousreply 146September 12, 2024 12:47 PM

The guy who played Tony sucked. I heard that Courtney and he were major assholes on the set. They would sit right off stage and mock the other actors. Especially on their looks. That being said the minute Pat Ashley came on the set OLTL was on fire again. The Pat Ashley character was never dull or boring. Plus her voice was just great to listen to. Slee must have hated her.

by Anonymousreply 147September 12, 2024 3:58 PM

Tony - or at least one of the Tonys - was played by George Reinhardt. He and Jacquie Courtney had been hugely popular - like Luke and Laura popular - on Another World. When they were fired from AW ABC brought them to OLTL to see if lightning would strike twice.

George was fired at OLTL after a year or so but Jacquie stayed on until Paul Rauch had her fired. He'd dealt with their shenanigans at AW and wasn't down for Round 2.

by Anonymousreply 148September 12, 2024 5:53 PM

Jacquie was a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 150September 12, 2024 8:24 PM

Anyone else that loved Becky Lee? I loved both actresses who played her. She was one of my all time favorites on OLTL. The casting and writing for each actress were completely different. The first one was this little fragile flower and the second one was this Amazonian country gal who could plow fields any day of the week. She was the most interesting and fun Mrs. Asa Buchanan. She took zero shit from Asa. She was another one that was red hot for a while then just kind of dumped. OLTL had a bad habit of doing that with characters. Making them an integral part of the show and then just get rid of them like they were nothing to the fans. Oh. I hearts Mimi too.

by Anonymousreply 151September 12, 2024 8:31 PM

I was never into OLTL as much as I was AMC, but I did watch it some in the 80s since it aired right after AMC. I sort of remember Pat, but I do remember Samantha, Becky Lee, Mimi, Delilah…were they all married to Asa at some point? I remember Samantha drowning (murdered?) I think? I also liked Becky Lee and really like Shelly Burch as Delilah. They had Delilah cross over to AMC a couple of times.

by Anonymousreply 152September 12, 2024 10:30 PM

Delilah was about the prettiest actress on daytime. Plus she was talented enough. I really liked her. I vaguely remember the Samantha death. I'm pretty sure she was murdered but I don't know how they handled the baby she was carrying. I believe it was Rafe's? I thought the character of Sam was OK but I really loved the actress who played her so I was able to enjoy the character.

by Anonymousreply 153September 12, 2024 10:36 PM

Dorian Lopinto played Sam. She had a Nina Cortlandt look and vibe. After OLTL, she was on the 9 to 5 syndicated show, and then had a long run as the mom on The Secret World of Alex Mack.

by Anonymousreply 154September 12, 2024 10:42 PM

She really did look like Taylor. I'm glad she worked after OLTL. She was always enjoyable no matter who they paired her with.

by Anonymousreply 159September 12, 2024 11:58 PM

Dorian LoPinto traded upward when she joined OLTL. She had previously been on The Doctors.

by Anonymousreply 160September 12, 2024 11:59 PM

She had a very small part on a Threes Company episode so the move to Hollywood didn't work out.

by Anonymousreply 161September 13, 2024 12:07 AM

With as much nostalgia and retconning that oltl did, I’m surprised pat ashley or a relative didn’t pop up in the later years.

by Anonymousreply 163September 13, 2024 12:23 AM

Do any clips of Gillian Spencer as Viki exist? I loved her as Daisy on AMC, but I’ve never seen her as Viki, or as Jennifer on ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 172September 13, 2024 2:30 AM

Is that Susan Sullivan in R171 clip?

by Anonymousreply 173September 13, 2024 2:40 AM

I've searched for clips of Spencer as Viki. All that's up is a 40 second one on YouTube. I loved her on AMC too. I'd kill to see some of her scenes. One thing left out of the Meredith death story is Niki Smith let her friends into the house to rob it. From what I've read when Spencer was playing Viki/Niki there was no humor. It was a dark place. Niki was also carrying on with Vinnie Wolek.

by Anonymousreply 174September 13, 2024 2:42 AM

In high school, we had a tv in the senior lounge and I remember everyone laughing when they tarted up Slee to be Niki. It was a good storyline, though.

by Anonymousreply 175September 13, 2024 2:49 AM

I always liked Jean Randolph and Tori more than Niki Smith. Those two bitches were ice cold.

by Anonymousreply 176September 13, 2024 2:50 AM

Spencer did more writing for soaps than acting on them. She was head writer for a while for Another World and served important writing positions on a lot of other soaps. She also returned to OLTL not as a character but an interim head writer until they found a permanent replacement.

by Anonymousreply 177September 13, 2024 2:55 AM

I just liked when Niki Smith seemed like somebody people would actually be attracted to. I'm thinking specially of that scene in 1985, where J.T. Walsh is clearly smitten with her.

by Anonymousreply 178September 13, 2024 3:00 AM

All of Viki's alters were more interesting than her. Jean Randolph was such a great character. I remember when she checked into a hotel and looked at Viki's clothes and was disgusted. Then when she had to steel herself when at the Buchanans because they were huggers and she hated to be touched. Then of course the way she dealt with Dorian. When she played Jean was the only time Slee didn't get on my nerves.

by Anonymousreply 179September 13, 2024 3:02 AM

[quote]Do any clips of Gillian Spencer as Viki exist?

I saw the ones at the Paley Center probably about ten years ago. I will compare watching Spencer in the role versus Slezak to those of us who grew up watching Lydia Bruce and Jada Rowland playing Maggie and Carolee on The Doctors and then discovering Bethel Leslie and Carolee Campbell's performances in those roles when The Doctors was rebroadcast. They are all good actresses, but they have different takes on the role.

Granted, I only saw three scenes, but Spencer was playing the part of Viki as someone who was pretending to be strong but fragile on the inside. In the scene, I saw Spencer playing Niki; they weren't calling her Niki; they called her Nicole, and she was pretty harsh and sexual, but not in a comedic way, like we think of Niki Smith.

Slezak's Viki embraced the Philadelphia Mainline stoic thing, and she played Niki, in my opinion, way over the top.

by Anonymousreply 180September 13, 2024 3:06 AM

Spencer was pitch perfect in every scene I saw her in on AMC.

by Anonymousreply 181September 13, 2024 3:12 AM

I remember Spencer as Niki was downright scary. Slee’s Niki was soft and non-threatening, at least at first.

by Anonymousreply 182September 13, 2024 3:41 AM

There's a clip of Spencer on ATWT but it was the 90s and she appeared as a ghost. I don't think there's anything out there from when she was still alive.

by Anonymousreply 183September 13, 2024 3:46 AM

I think there is an ATWT episode from 1974 on You Tube with Gillian Spencer in it. Jennifer and Kim spend the episode talking about Kim and John’s marriage.

by Anonymousreply 215September 14, 2024 11:05 PM

Because I was a teenage Dark Shadows fan, I was introduced to OLTL at the beginning. I lost track of it during college and after, but once VCRs came, I was able to get back into it. There were wonderful parts and terrible parts, but I was hooked til the end. Living in NYC, I saw several of the actors on the streets (also actors from other soaps). I remember the first time Viki turned into Niki, Eterna, Cord's tight bathing suit, the very young, hot Clint Ritchie, Megan Gordon, Tina, Dorian's hunky boyfriend Jon Russell, David Fumero, the whole schmear. I was so sad to see it end, something that you think will last forever.

by Anonymousreply 216September 14, 2024 11:38 PM

I recently watched Eterna on YouTube. I had about it at the time, but hadn’t watched. I really loved it. The production was great, especially the music (I’m not the OLTL fan who brings up the music all the time, but I certainly agree with him).

My complaint is that the story didn’t last longer. What a huge investment for a story that lasted basically one month.

by Anonymousreply 217September 15, 2024 12:17 AM

R217 I think it was written by scab writers during a writers' strike. Someone here can either verify or dismiss what I say.

by Anonymousreply 218September 15, 2024 12:24 AM

R218. I think you're right about the strike. The general public feedback though (especially from those bitchy soap opera magazine "reporters") was extremely negative. That could have killed it prematurely, too. I loved Andrea Evans in that Eterna jumpsuit!

by Anonymousreply 219September 15, 2024 12:45 AM

R218, thanks, I didn’t know that. Rauch was responsible for the production/design right? Special theme song, special font, humongous new sets, costumes, etc. I assumed they’d milk all of that and that the story would last a lot longer. Story was basically February sweeps… when March rolled around the show featured location shooting (I think at Duke University) and Eterna quickly seemed a memory.

by Anonymousreply 220September 15, 2024 12:46 AM

Oh yeah, that jumpsuit almost turned me str8

by Anonymousreply 221September 15, 2024 12:46 AM

All- you are wrong- Eterna was NOT written during the Writers strike- that was 1000% S Michael Schnessel ( a gay man, btw)

And the musical cues composed for Eterna were fucking epic- and worthy of a film. As was all of the scoring from 85-90-

R220-Eterna was actually a damn fine mystery during the fall of 88 into early 89 before the underground city reveal- other than the rewriting of history- which really is offensive- it was a fucking thrillride. It was awesome. It was NOT just February sweeps- It was a 6 month storyline- and the mystery up front was really well done- Kind of like how Y&R would pace a storyline, but like 80's OLTL- it then took some cocaine and shit got real.

The brilliant Patrick London/ Faux Bo was written during the 1988 Writers Strike- and that shit was EPIC- GO rewatch the entire summer of 88 on Youtube- it was fucking amazing.

R217- I may or not be him! But I think I am him. Score Productions/Michel Camilo. You know how I do.

OLTL was a fucking revelation and I wanted to work on that show, but I was 10, so it was not in the cards.

by Anonymousreply 222September 15, 2024 12:56 AM

Thanks r222

by Anonymousreply 223September 15, 2024 12:59 AM

R219- To my knowledge- Eterna aired as written. Paul Rauch could give zero fucks about critics at that point and OLTL was still highly rated- and lost no viewers during Eterna- The critics panned OLTL/1989 across the board- I thought it was amazing, but holy shit- there was some serious violence- Sarah's rape, Gabrielle getting strangled on her wedding day- It was very lurid- but holy fuck, the actors on that show SOLD everything thrown their way.

OLTL would fall out of the Top 3 in the fall of 1989- it would come back in February 1990 during Mendorra (Top 3) but that was it-

It hit top 3 during Marty's rape trial for a few weeks as well- summer of 93-

by Anonymousreply 224September 15, 2024 1:02 AM

R218- Its funny- that Writers Strike ended towards the end of summer 1988, and ETERNA is what those "refreshed" writers came up with! Its kind of funny in retrospect!! Eterna started in September of 1988- maybe early October- Viki's dreams, the HS reunion..

OLTL really planned this shit out. Bo came back in Feb/March of 1988- and thanks to YT- something was off with Bo from the jump- Faux Bo really lasted 6 months- and every bit of that was plotted/planned-

I had not started watching on my own (without my grandparents) until the summer of 88- I had no idea that Bo had been acting weird for many months, It was really well done and well written-

by Anonymousreply 225September 15, 2024 1:07 AM

R220- Duke university was the BEGINNING of Eterna- Fall of 1988- Fraternity Row had just started late summer.. I. think March of 1989 focused a lot on Gabrielle/Michael and the lead up to the babyswitch storyline in May-

by Anonymousreply 226September 15, 2024 1:27 AM

This is Pat Ashley reporting from Eterna.

by Anonymousreply 227September 15, 2024 1:30 AM

I could be wrong, but I think it was the Buchanan City plot that got extended due to the writers strike. They were always going to do it, but they needed to continue for longer than expected because they were filling time?

by Anonymousreply 228September 15, 2024 1:35 AM

R228- Correct Pat! And that one DID go way too fucking long. I have to say (I only watched on Youtube thanks to "The Palace" channel- that last month was lovely. The beginning was awesome and the last month. I particularly loved Blaze time traveling to the future- it was charming. And Erika really moved me- I was heartbroken for Ginny- And Clint Ritchie 100% deserved an Emmy nomination- The early part of the blindness storyline and the early parts of the Old West- he was a no nonsense actor, but he did a damn fine job. Probably his reputation as an asshole behind he scenes cost him that-

by Anonymousreply 229September 15, 2024 1:40 AM

From the very first time he appeared on the OLTL screen, until his last scene, Clint Ritchie was everything. They did him wrong.

by Anonymousreply 230September 15, 2024 1:44 AM

This is Pat Ashley reporting from the Old West

I hearts you.

by Anonymousreply 231September 15, 2024 1:46 AM

The best scene in the entire run of OLTL, even thought they retconned it way too much, was when OG Dorian let Victor stroke out while dangling his heart meds in front of his face.

All right, ALL RIGHT victor you want the truth!? I never loved you.... then she went on to list everything she hated about him. Then he started to have his stroke and she dangled the meds in front of his face. It was beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 232September 15, 2024 1:59 AM

Oh my goodness.

Buckysbabe?

by Anonymousreply 233September 15, 2024 2:16 AM

R233- I am 44- I am not Bucky's Babe from 1999. Shit.

I really think CR was a very good actor, and he deserved a nomination for 87/88-

I think Phil Carey ruled as well- He was funny as shit. Asa/Tina- That was a duo. (Phil and Andrea) Andrea had chemistry with everyone- but her and Phil, killed me.

by Anonymousreply 234September 15, 2024 2:29 AM

Does anyone else outright skip the Kevin & Stephanie scenes when watching 1991 episodes?

by Anonymousreply 235September 15, 2024 2:55 AM

Its pure garbage. R235- Yes-

by Anonymousreply 236September 15, 2024 2:56 AM

Just putting this out there, but the Cassadinification/Dimerafication of Victor Lord was the wrong move. He could have been a bad newspaper man who was fucking his daughter and her friends. The Buchanans was also a mistake. A bunch of Texas cowboys move to Pennsylvania? Llanview is on the Main Line not Pennsyltucky.

by Anonymousreply 237September 15, 2024 3:11 AM

R222, the setup (and maybe some of the aftermath) may've been a six month story, but use of the special sets, costumes, font, score, special effects, etc. aired in February. Once the rescue happened that was pretty much the last those elements were featured.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 238September 15, 2024 3:20 AM

R237- It was kind of META for that time due to Dallas. I loved the Buchanans, but I totally get it. I was not even born, but mid-late 70's OLTL was pretty intelligent drama. I once read that the show was a "psychological drama" in the late 70's. That is pretty impressive. I will say that 93-94 OLTL was similar?

by Anonymousreply 239September 15, 2024 3:21 AM

R238- 100% correct, but the lead up to Eterna- was better than the underground city itself. (and I loved it!!) But its clear that the entire storyline was planned as written and written as planned- It honestly was a well done storyline from beginning to end- They committed to it- and executed it-

OLTL was consistently fucked by critics, when it actually tried to go beyond the genre (which Gottlieb tried to take credit for- yet much of her shit was as trite and boring as FUCK)

by Anonymousreply 240September 15, 2024 3:25 AM

When Jessica got older it became a problem to have 3 young tortured heroines. OLTL had Marty, Kelly and then Jessica to almost play the same party except that Marty had audience background but no family connections. In reality they should have stuck with her to continue as Blair's nemesis. Tea didn't have the backstory to match Marty to keep it interesting.

by Anonymousreply 241September 15, 2024 3:39 AM

I am a Marty STAN. As much as I really do not like Gottlieb or her OLTL- Marty and Susan resonated. What a deeply intuitive and 'earthy"? actress. She felt real to me. And I called it very early in 2008/2009? That Susan would win that Lead Actress Emmy. I NEVER expected her to even be nominated, but I said right here, if Haskell got nominated she would win. Her scenes were epic. (Everyone was obsessed with Debbie Morgan, who I have NEVER heard a kind word about in terms of her personality) Anyway, somehow Susan got nominated- and won. She was AMAZING. I do not understand why the show destroyed that character at the end,

by Anonymousreply 242September 15, 2024 3:46 AM

I thought Marty having no family ties to the Llanview landscape was the most interesting thing about her character. She was an orphan and Viki met her through Megan as an orphan. An orphan heiress that inherited a fortune but drank and slutted her way through an illness she didn't know what to do about. Acted out and was a troublemaker until something horrible happened to her and she had to learn to value herself. It really was a great character.

by Anonymousreply 243September 15, 2024 4:12 AM

R243- Where Malone and Gottlieb fucked up REPEATEDLY were things just like you mentioned. Characters on soaps must be tied into a core family. And short term arcs that do not have long term effects do NOT work. (Gottlieb's "short term" arcs idea was a fucking dud and ended within a year)

That was even a criticism over Megan's death- that entire thing lead to NOTHING beyond Megan's death.. I remember reading that that they did all of this wonderful work, that ended- like a film. And soaps do not work like that- It was true.

However, Marty was a testament to Susan's talent and Malone's as well. (Despite his shortcomings)

by Anonymousreply 244September 15, 2024 4:18 AM

If you were to put Marty in one of the OLTL core families-would you make her a Lord, a Buchanan, or maybe a niece of Dorian’s?

by Anonymousreply 245September 15, 2024 4:29 AM

I think the Marty character was unique in this sense but i agree. It really worked for this character. The easy way to keep her tied to a core family would have been to tie her to Kevin. But her actual connection to Kevin was pretty ugly so they never went there.

by Anonymousreply 246September 15, 2024 4:31 AM

They could have always made Marty Pat Ashley or Becky Lee's daughter. What about Mimi King's daughter?

by Anonymousreply 247September 15, 2024 4:36 AM

She definitely had a connection the a core family but it was dark. One of my favorite OLTL promos of all time was like a week before the rape trial and the commercial being about "WHAT DO YOU DO IN A TOWN DIVIDED?" And it had a bunch of clips of family members and and friends arguing about sexual assault and ending with Max and Luna arguing and he tells her "I know Kevin would never rape anybody. Not in a million years." and Luna says "Women don't lie about rape."

by Anonymousreply 248September 15, 2024 4:54 AM

R245- AWESOME QUESTION!! I have no idea! I would have loved her to be Katrina Karr's daughter Mary..

(I fell in love with Brynn Thayer in clips- I find her to be onne of OLTL's most underated actresses)

by Anonymousreply 249September 15, 2024 5:03 AM

Love child of Katrina Karr's would've been delicious. But i always did like the orphan sadness of her character. Haskell played it well.

by Anonymousreply 250September 15, 2024 5:19 AM

DL fave Sue Haskell's best OLTL moment

Marty:"I was not responsible for Sarah's death. I was nowhere near that accident" Nora: "No you weren't. But you still lied about it. Doesn't that say something Miss Saybrooke? That even when you're innocent. Your first impulse is to lie." M: "But when no one believes you. No matter what you say." N: "It's like the little boy that cried wolf." M:"Yes" N:"Or rape?" Marty just nods and cries.

by Anonymousreply 251September 15, 2024 5:26 AM

Why is it Susan Haskell never did anything else? You would have thought other soaps would have competed to sign her up when she left OLTL. Never any prime time, I think a couple independent movies no one ever heard of.

I think Haskell could have gone on to have the type of career Judith Light ended up having. Boy did she live up to her potential!

by Anonymousreply 252September 15, 2024 7:44 AM

She was very tied to that character. Both Sarah Brown and Martha Byrne when they were offered the part to return were hesitant because they both thought it was too closely related to the actress. Byrne was almost the Christina Chambers version. But Martha was a huge Haskell fan and didn't wanna touch it.

by Anonymousreply 253September 15, 2024 7:52 AM

When Martha was offered the part she said it was it was such a great role but audiences will only ever see one actress in the part.

by Anonymousreply 254September 15, 2024 7:57 AM

You're telling us!

by Anonymousreply 255September 15, 2024 12:14 PM

This is Pat Ashley reporting from a spaceship to Heaven.

by Anonymousreply 256September 15, 2024 12:19 PM

The storyline in which Pat Ashley had an identical sister or cousin with a British accent was hilarious. The actress was simply so bad.

by Anonymousreply 257September 15, 2024 12:37 PM

R242 I hate that trope so much. Writing off characters by making them going crazy is almost as bad as killing them only to brought back from the dead. At least we got Marty throwing Natalie off the side of building.

by Anonymousreply 258September 15, 2024 12:41 PM

At one point, it was going to be revealed that Todd was the real Kevin Riley, but they scrapped the story. Apparently, Viki got the wrong baby back when he was kidnapped. Given Viki and Todd's relationship later in the series, it would have made sense. I'm not sure why they didn't go with it.

by Anonymousreply 259September 15, 2024 2:33 PM

r259

So they recycled the thought with Jessica and Natalie and could have made Todd and Kevin twins as well

by Anonymousreply 260September 15, 2024 2:37 PM

Don't you dare R257 don't you dare

by Anonymousreply 261September 15, 2024 4:06 PM

Marty should have been Niki Smith's baby. That year Viki put on weight and then was sent to a "spa" by victor.

by Anonymousreply 262September 15, 2024 4:09 PM

I was just listening to a Dark Shadows podcast. The guest was Mary O'Leary, a soap producer for several shows. She mentioned that ABC seriously considered canceling OLTL in the early 1970s but canceled Dark Shadows instead because Dan Curtis was more or less done with the show and didn't want to lower the show's budget. If Dan Curtis hadn't wanted to end his show, I guess OLTL was on the chopping block. This proves my theory that OLTL was always the ABC red-headed stepchild of soap, even in its early days.

by Anonymousreply 263September 15, 2024 4:48 PM

What storyline earned Slee her first Emmy in 1984? The period on OLTL from the end of the Katrina/Jenny baby switch, and the return of Andrea Evans., seems so unremarkable.

by Anonymousreply 264September 15, 2024 5:37 PM

r264- Great question- 83-84 looks very bleak on YT. The show seems incredibly hokey and old fashioned- like something from the 50's- I am not surprised that the show dropped in the ratings.. I want to know too! Wait!!! I think I know- Hold on a second-

by Anonymousreply 265September 15, 2024 5:40 PM

It's interesting that only 3 of her emmys involve her DID

by Anonymousreply 267September 15, 2024 5:44 PM

That Emmy she won at Megan’s bedside was undeserved. Jessica Tuck or Elizabeth Hubbard were more deserving that year.

by Anonymousreply 268September 15, 2024 5:46 PM

Was that the storyline where Viki said, you stink of Echo?

by Anonymousreply 269September 15, 2024 5:56 PM

R269. That was when Charlie Banks had an affair with Echo in the shows final years. She used those scenes to get her last Emmy nom but then switched to the scenes where she played Victoria and all of the alters trapped in Viki's mind. She could have won if she kept the scenes she had with Brian Kerwin and Kim Zimmer.

by Anonymousreply 270September 15, 2024 6:32 PM

Poor Nancy Pinkerton. Did she ever work again after OLTL?

by Anonymousreply 271September 15, 2024 9:04 PM

R271. No. Once you make out with Sheppard Strudwick, you've reached the pinnacle

by Anonymousreply 272September 15, 2024 10:08 PM

Nancy went to the Doctors and Guiding Light. Then she died.

by Anonymousreply 273September 15, 2024 10:28 PM

She was on ATWT as Dorothy Connors, Whit McColl’s housekeeper/mistress/murderer.

by Anonymousreply 274September 15, 2024 10:30 PM

I was just flabbergasted by how quickly they got rid of Pat Ashley. When she was on, everyone I knew who watched, Pat was there favorite character. She just brought some needed life to the show and her and Bo were a great pair.

by Anonymousreply 275September 16, 2024 5:28 PM

Jeffrey David Pomerantz was a hot piece of ass.

Porn actor Jerry Butler had a bit in his memoir about being a day player on OLTL in the early 1980s and two “mature” actors vied for his attention. They would even take bets on who could bed the latest, hottest day player or extra. I know one of them was Anthony George (Will Vernon) but can’t remember who the other one was.

by Anonymousreply 276September 16, 2024 5:38 PM

Farley Granger promised, for what in return I can only guess, that he would get Jerry Butler the part of Brad Vernon. LOL

The Karen Wolek hooker story was already done on Another World. Sharlene Watts was the first daytime hooker - and even won the Emmy before Karen did. Laurie Heineman was way more subtle than Judith Light too.

by Anonymousreply 288September 16, 2024 8:55 PM

a hammer to the head was more subtle than Judith Light

by Anonymousreply 289September 16, 2024 8:56 PM

R289. And what do you mean by that? TALBOT HUDDLESTON!!!!

by Anonymousreply 290September 16, 2024 9:58 PM

When OLTL was circling the drain, they should have brought Karen back for a brief arc. Of course she was snorting coke on Dallas in 2011/2012.

by Anonymousreply 291September 16, 2024 10:15 PM

[quote]hooker story was already done on Another World. Sharlene Watts was the first daytime hooker - and even won the Emmy before Karen did. Laurie Heineman was way more subtle than Judith Light too.

Donna Beck on AMC came before Karen Woleck. Her story started in 1976.

About the same time as Donna Beck on AMC, Another World had Sharlene Watts. The Sharlene character was already on the canvas as married to Dr. Russ Matthews when the prostitution story started in 1976. In this case, Sharlene had been a hooker in the PAST. She was not turning tricks while in Bay City and married to Russ, although she was getting propositioned by an old john.

Likewise, Another World never used the word "hooker" or "prostitute." Another World said she was a "B-Girl." That's how Sharlene referred to herself in her big confession to her husband before she left town.

by Anonymousreply 292September 16, 2024 10:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 306September 17, 2024 10:00 PM

Isn’t Lonnie Quinn, the first Will Cortlandt, also a gay? I know he became a weatherman, so maybe I’m confusing him with another Weather Gay.

This triggered a memory of the first Dixie. She was pretty terrible. AMC did that a lot—cast someone in an important new role before they had the “right” person. The actors we associate with characters like Donna, Brooke, Trevor, Terrence, Skye, Brian Bodine, Julie Chandler..none of them were the originators of their roles.

by Anonymousreply 307September 18, 2024 3:31 AM

Lonnie Quinn is a strong, strapping, hairy heterosexual! No fag there!

by Anonymousreply 308September 18, 2024 5:03 AM

Does anyone remember Margaret Klenck who played the reporter who Judith Light once slapped. She was in an indie movie called Hard choices and I remember being unsettled by it. There was also a scene where she and I think John Sayles casually snort a line of coke. She's now a Jungian analyst.

by Anonymousreply 309September 19, 2024 8:55 PM

R309. She was a Lewis! A reporter at the Banner and eventual fiancee to Mario Corelli (in actually Marco Dane). If I remember, she use to rile Slee up at times.

by Anonymousreply 321September 19, 2024 10:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 326September 20, 2024 1:17 AM

I love some of the ideas. Katrina's love child being the best among them but I agree Marty worked as an orphan. It made her sadness and her ordeal all the more sad. Because she only had the kindness of strangers. She should have ended up Kevin's soulmate,

by Anonymousreply 327September 20, 2024 5:47 AM

R259 this is why I always liked the way Lebine wrote Kevin. Because he had a constant conflict with Viki speaking to why she would ever have sympathy for someone that almost ruined his life. I thought Gibbs was a great Kevin. And he was electric with Gina Tognoni.

I thought everybody loved Wedina. She looked great with the haircut.

by Anonymousreply 341September 21, 2024 2:16 PM

[quote]OLTL would fall out of the Top 3 in the fall of 1989- it would come back in February 1990 during Mendorra (Top 3) but that was it- It hit top 3 during Marty's rape trial for a few weeks as well- summer of 93

The show never looked uglier than during this transition era. Throughout 1991 every square inch of Llanfair was covered in Laura Ashley floral patterns. You don't usually think of the early '90s as severely lacking taste but it was a real claustrophobic look.

by Anonymousreply 342September 21, 2024 4:31 PM

R342 I loved that look!

by Anonymousreply 343September 21, 2024 4:58 PM

The Buchanan boys must have been kind of out place in all that floral.

by Anonymousreply 344September 21, 2024 5:01 PM

I may have posted this before, but I loved the Georgie Phillips era of OLTL. I think JFP was producing, but I'm not sure who was writing.

by Anonymousreply 345September 21, 2024 5:05 PM

That Laura Ashley look was dreadful. They had Kim Z in those outfits at GL and poor Kim Hughes looked like someone ripped the covering off a couch with her knockoff Laura Ashley prints over at ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 346September 21, 2024 5:39 PM

I still haven't found the rainbow's end. *sobs*

by Anonymousreply 347September 21, 2024 6:08 PM

R347. But I'll give you tomorrow!

by Anonymousreply 348September 21, 2024 6:27 PM

I think it’s fair to say a big reason OLTL fell out of the Top 3 was the departure of Andrea Evans. Tina’s wild storylines drove a lot of water cooler chatter and press.

by Anonymousreply 349September 21, 2024 6:43 PM

And sadly, even though she was My Tina, Karen Witter couldn't replace her.

by Anonymousreply 358September 21, 2024 9:37 PM

Was Andrea Evans in the In Memoriam segment on the Emmys? (did the daytime Emmys have one?). If not, she absolutely should have been!

by Anonymousreply 359September 21, 2024 10:59 PM

The year she died, yes, I believe so.

by Anonymousreply 360September 21, 2024 10:59 PM

R360- they had the nerve to list her credit as Passions. Not One Life to Live. What a travesty.

by Anonymousreply 361September 22, 2024 5:04 PM

How many soaps had she done? Four?

by Anonymousreply 362September 22, 2024 5:11 PM

I remember when Tina moved to Genoa City.

by Anonymousreply 363September 22, 2024 5:25 PM

Kate Collins was magnificent. It’s hard to believe she was only on AMC for seven years (originally). They should have killed off Trevor instead of Natalie. I know Kate wanted to be with her new husband in Chicago, but I think she might have stayed longer if she didn’t have to work opposite that asshole Kiberd.

by Anonymousreply 364September 22, 2024 5:29 PM

I don't even understand why so many people liked Kiberd. I didn't mind him on Loving but once he moved to AMC yuck.

by Anonymousreply 365September 22, 2024 5:40 PM

The well story brought AMC back to 2nd place, while the rest of the ABC soaps were dropping.

Were Natalie (and Kate) considered a threat to Erica and Lucci? It seems like any female character on AMC who threatened Erica’s dominance was quickly dumped, with the exception of Brooke.

by Anonymousreply 366September 22, 2024 5:47 PM

As much as I loved them all I miss my Loving the most. I know most disagree but I thought it was a great show. Plus it was the only one I got to watch from start to finish. Plus it really had the hottest guys. The father what a waste story was so good.

by Anonymousreply 367September 22, 2024 5:51 PM

I watched Loving from the beginning but lost interest in the last few years of its run. Christine Tudor as Gwyneth was awesome.

by Anonymousreply 368September 22, 2024 5:59 PM

Loving's biggest attraction, aside from Trucker, was it was only a 1/2 hour. The shows were always tight. The last year of Loving was its best.

by Anonymousreply 369September 22, 2024 6:02 PM

R366- OLTL fan and AMC hater- I even watched Natalie in the Well- It was absolutely excellent- AMC stayed in 2nd place a while I think? And wasn't this the time (or shortly after) when Days shot to #2? Or that may have been a few years later

by Anonymousreply 370September 22, 2024 6:10 PM

ATWT and GL also benefitted from ABC’s ratings drop, both rising in the ratings in 1991/92. Then they faltered (Marland’s death/exodus of GL Actresses in 1992), and Days and Bold and the Beautiful benefited from that.

by Anonymousreply 371September 22, 2024 6:22 PM

No love ever for Ryan's Hope and it was the most Emmy honored soap.

by Anonymousreply 372September 22, 2024 6:31 PM

By the time I’d started watching soaps, Ryan’s Hope was no longer shown on my ABC affiliate, so I never r ally saw much of it. I do remember seeing hot young Grant Show!

by Anonymousreply 373September 22, 2024 6:35 PM

Bring Ilene Kristen in as Delia (since she is in fact Ava's mother) and she can be a foil to Tracy. She can start a May/December with Giolin...

by Anonymousreply 374September 22, 2024 6:45 PM

R330, thanks so much for posting that clip! At the end he teases that they’ll soon have Cusi Cram on. I always assumed her first name was pronounced like Susie. Guess it’s actually pronounced more like QZ.

by Anonymousreply 375September 22, 2024 6:52 PM

Cusi Cram is too fat! Fire her.

by Anonymousreply 376September 22, 2024 8:29 PM

R376. I won my first Emmy under Jean, and she was a wonderful woman. Linda Gottleib, however, was a CUNT! I didn't like her ATTALL.

by Anonymousreply 377September 22, 2024 8:43 PM

The rumor is that Slee was beyond PISSED that she was overlooked from ‘97 to ‘04. Not 1 Emmy nomination. Brought her ego back down to earth.

by Anonymousreply 378September 22, 2024 9:42 PM

Ryan's Hope was not shown on my hometown ABC affiliate at ALL for its whole run. I only got to see the last 18 months or so when I went off to college.

Weirdly, our ABC affiliate also had GH on at 9 AM and on a one day delay. This was even during the super popular Luke and Laura years. AMC and OLTL were popular but THE soap in the early and mid 80s in my hometown was Guiding Light, because it was the one on a channel everyone could get AND the one with youthful storylines that kids could watch at 3 pm when school was out.

by Anonymousreply 379September 22, 2024 10:21 PM

R378. I can see that. Of course, her starting to wear low cut tops in 98/99 to seduce Mark Derwin probably turned the Blue Ribbon Panel off considerably.

by Anonymousreply 380September 22, 2024 10:44 PM

This is Pat Ashley, reporting from the matron section of Lord & Taylor's lingerie department.

by Anonymousreply 381September 22, 2024 11:00 PM

[quote]Were Natalie (and Kate) considered a threat to Erica and Lucci?

Very much so. She was her main rival as far as being the show's alternative lead actress and a sex symbol. Not to mention she could act circles around her.

by Anonymousreply 382September 23, 2024 1:14 AM

If they had given Kate the push she deserved she would have undoubtedly gone into the top 5 most popular actresses. The only thing Lucci had that worked against Collins was that she was there from the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 383September 23, 2024 1:21 AM

Lucci was way more cutthroat than most accounts suggest. To some degree she was OK with Barr because she recognized Erica needed a rival, and she was OK with anyone who could be Erica's sidekick.

But she had big issues with anyone who tried to usurp her space on the show, and certainly Kate Collins as Natalie would have been the show's new star had she stayed on - it was a combination of loathing Kiberd and a lot of pushback from Lucci that led her to leave.

Lucci also had several other snit fits as we know - Sarah Michelle, of course, and Faux Silver.

by Anonymousreply 384September 23, 2024 2:18 AM

Lucci couldn't have been very happy about Dorothy Lyman getting all sorts of acclaim and winning two Daytime Emmys.

by Anonymousreply 385September 23, 2024 2:52 AM

Interesting that the only actresses on AMC who stayed on the show after winning an Emmy were Julia Barr (supporting) , Cady McClain (younger actress) and Dorothy Lyman (won supporting then lead the following year).

Everyone else who won an Emmy was gone within 12 months of winning.

Kathleen Noone gave an interview to TV Guide when she joined Knots Landing and said that was a joke behind the scenes-Win the Emmy, Lose Your Job.

by Anonymousreply 386September 23, 2024 2:59 AM

Natalie, could you use a change of panties?

by Anonymousreply 387September 23, 2024 3:00 AM

Another gay from AMC was Jeremy Hunter. The only gay I know of on GH is Kin Shriner and Tony Geary.

by Anonymousreply 388September 23, 2024 3:03 AM

Jean LeClerc was a homo? Shocked, I tell ya.

by Anonymousreply 389September 23, 2024 4:12 AM

by Anonymousreply 395September 23, 2024 8:24 PM

Did Anna ever have a real story?

by Anonymousreply 396September 23, 2024 8:28 PM

Doris Belack was rather homely. Quite downright ugly.

by Anonymousreply 397September 23, 2024 8:38 PM

DB was great in Tootsie.

by Anonymousreply 398September 23, 2024 8:49 PM

Anna and Eileen were the matriarchs, characters over 40 and talk-to's. Eileen had a pill popping sl when her husband died, and when her daughter Julie moved in with her boyfriend without being married, it was supposedly a sl that Agnes experienced in real life with one of her daughters.

by Anonymousreply 399September 23, 2024 10:07 PM

I've only seen her in about three clips on YouTube but I love what I've seen of Eileen and the actress who played her. Wish there were clips of Mark Tolland and Julie.

by Anonymousreply 400September 23, 2024 10:26 PM

The actress who played Eileen went on to play Miss Ellie’s BFF Mavis on Dallas and Ellen DeGeneres’ mother on her TV show.

by Anonymousreply 401September 23, 2024 10:30 PM

That's cool. Like I said I've seen about ten minutes in total of her but she was really engaging and easy to watch.

by Anonymousreply 402September 23, 2024 10:35 PM

She got a good write up on Wiki. She was Joe's sister and apparently at the time a Jew marrying a Catholic was a big deal. OG Dorian was wrapped up in her fate.

by Anonymousreply 407September 23, 2024 11:43 PM

Alice Hirson was the last Eileen - and was terrific, but Pat Roe played the part originally and she was fantastic. Roe had been an understudy to Bette Davis on Broadway in Night of The Iguana.

by Anonymousreply 408September 24, 2024 1:49 AM

You know who was a good actress? Lieux Dressler as Alice Grant. She was a supporting character and she played it so low key that she never got the credit she deserved. When given an actual scene though she was great.

R409. Daughter to Marie?

by Anonymousreply 410September 24, 2024 2:20 AM

Lieux Dressler was great as Alice Grant.

I am surprised another soap didn’t hire her as the mother of some psycho.

by Anonymousreply 411September 24, 2024 2:38 AM

I think Lieux was only five years older than Robin/Heather. How did they get rid of Alice? I had stopped watching.

by Anonymousreply 412September 24, 2024 2:41 AM

I think Alice just faded away. Gloria Monty made a mistake deciding to make her Diana's murderer. It was a last minute rewrite. It was Heather All Along!

by Anonymousreply 413September 24, 2024 2:50 AM

OLTL from 1980.. Lots of Pat Ashley and again not one second of Slee.

Mmm, that big beast with meaty thighs....I'll have some of that!

by Anonymousreply 416September 24, 2024 3:14 AM

Alice Hirson is still alive! Bring Eileen Seigel to GH! And Rachel Ames is still hanging in there.

by Anonymousreply 417September 24, 2024 5:03 AM

Believe it or not, I remember when Mick Gordon came on the scene. And I came too.

by Anonymousreply 418September 24, 2024 10:07 AM

Sadly, it looks like the actor who played Mick Gordon aka Mr. Big and Meaty died a few years ago.

by Anonymousreply 419September 24, 2024 1:50 PM

^^James McDonnell. It's listed in his IMDB that he's deceased but there's no info. Google doesn't bring much up, either.
