Warren Beatty was wild about Joan Collins. He was enthusiastic about his relationship with her beyond anything he had sampled before. As Warren's friend Verne O'Hara put it, "Sex drives Joan. She was besotted with him. And he was besotted with her." He defended her acting ability constantly, with his fists if necessary. He also used her for his own ends; suggesting she leave the set of a British adaptation of Sons and Lovers as the cast left for England because the publicity she attracted was more useful to him by his side. She was something in Hollywood, and that was what he wanted to be.

For her part, she was devoted to him, and he even bought an engagement ring for her, a gold beacon surrounded by emeralds and diamonds. In January of 1959, they moved into a tiny studio apartment in the Chateau Marmont. At 22, Beatty was a veritable ball of energy, utilizing his photographic memory for phone numbers to make hundreds of calls a day in between fucks. He resisted proposing to Collins because he simply could not get cast. It was Elia Kazan putting him in the William Inge, Kansas-set morality play Splendor in the Grass that began his career better than lhis sideshow act with Collins ever could. Right before his first day on the set of Splendor, Collins became pregnant, and aborted the child quietly so as not to alert the press. The next day production began. When Beatty faltered opposite his celebrated costar, Kazan said, "Pretend it's Joan, Warren."

Beatty was so incredibly into himself that he began weight-training during the production to make sure he looked his best onscreen. When teenage girls around the production noticed megastars Collins and Wood but not him, Warren righted the wrong by arranging for another group to giggle loudly during his scenes. Eventually Joan Collins had to go to Rome to shoot Raoul Walsh's Esther and the King, and while she was there Beatty became convinced she was unfaithful to him. Although he and Collins were still engaged, they had already called off a planned wedding and were continents apart. He went after Julie Newmar in Rome without success and sought consolation with the daughter of Actors Studio founder Lee Strasberg, Susan, in Rome. He had sex with her continuously, notably in Luchino Visconti's bathroom. (Visconti was older, gay and loved Beatty.)When Beatty returned to Los Angeles, his relationship with Collins consisted largely of fighting and fucking. She eventually ended it when she saw he would not.

By her own admission, Joan Collins "went out with zillions and zillions of men" during her days as a young star in Hollywood.

"Were you unfaithful?" Joan was once asked by the comedienne Ruby Wax. "Yes," she replied, "but only on location. I used to say: 'It doesn't count on location.' Everybody was having a little fling. I don't suffer very much from guilt."

Joan and Beatty became obsessed with each other and spent every possible minute together. Her friends thought she was mad: he was poor, unknown, unemployed, and maybe using her to further his career. But she was determined to follow her heart.

Beatty moved in with her and she revelled in having at last a deep, stable, long-lasting love affair. Just four months after meeting, they were already planning to marry.

To many onlookers they seemed a perfect couple. "She was really right for him," said Beatty's friend Verne O'Hara. "Sex drives Joan. She was besotted with him. And he was besotted with her."

But then came a serious complication. Joan discovered she was pregnant. Warren was appalled. Joan said she would like to keep the baby, but he was immovable: a baby now could sabotage his entire career just as it was taking off. He persuaded her to have an abortion.

This was illegal in 1960, but, through one of his friends, they found a doctor in Newark, New Jersey, who was prepared to do it. Joan was terrified but they flew to New York, drove to Newark and she went through with it.

That May, Joan turned 27, and perhaps out of guilt for making her have an abortion, Warren decided that they should become officially engaged.

"I feel like having some chopped liver," he told her one afternoon and when she took the carton out of the fridge there, hidden in the meat, was a gold, diamond and pearl engagement ring.

They announced that they planned to marry in January the following year, and Joan flew off to Rome to make the film Esther And The King.

Their time apart, however, was punctuated by anxiety and mutual suspicion that the other was having an affair.

Slowly, their love was beginning to sour. Even Joan was starting to tire of Warren's incessant demands for sex.

In 1961, she accompanied Beatty to London for the filming of The Roman Spring Of Mrs Stone, in which he was to co-star with the legendary but neurotic Vivien Leigh.

Joan was suspicious about Beatty's closeness to the 47-year-old Leigh but uncertain whether they actually became lovers until one of his later girlfriends, the singer Madonna, reported years later that he had admitted it.

At the time, all she knew was that the relationship was in trouble. She admitted that part of the problem was that she was no longer prepared to be subservient to a man and was sometimes too aggressive towards Beatty, who, being insecure, became belligerent in return.

The death blow was dealt when Beatty began a passionate affair with Natalie Wood, his co-star in the film Splendour In The Grass, and the wife of Joan's great friend Robert Wagner.

Joan was determined to hang on to him for as long as possible. But when Natalie rented a house up in the hills at Bel Air and everyone knew that Warren was visiting her there regularly, even she realised that it was time to end the affair.

Being dumped by Beatty still rankled with Joan nearly half a century later, and when she was asked last year if it was really true that they had made love seven times a day she raised an eyebrow and purred: "Maybe he did, but I just lay there."

In 1957, Robert Wagner had to go off to Japan to make a movie with well-known maneater Joan Collins as his leading lady. Natalie Wood, when she learned about that got terribly upset. Finally, Wagner convinced her that he was going to Japan solely to make a movie and that there would be no hanky-panky. The fact that he was taking his parents along on the trip and that'd be sharing a hotel suite with him seemed to indicate that he wouldd have little time for anything but work and occasional sightseeing. Her anger forgotten, Natalie decided to see Robert Wagner off at Los Angeles Airport. Joan Collins arrived only seconds before departure time, arm in arm with her lover, Nicky Hilton, son of hotel tycoon Conrad Hilton. Natalie hoped that Hilton was accompanying Collins to Japan, but it turned out otherwise. Making sure that Collins was watching, Natalie gave Wagner a searing farewell kiss.

Natalie's most frequent escort turn out to be Nicky Hilton. Friends thought it was simply a matter of two people keeping each other company while their true loves, Robert Wagner and Joan Collins were out of town. But it quickly developed into an affair.

However, by the time Wagner's sojourn ended, Natalie had come to her senses and dropped Nicky Hilton. She discovered that underneath the suave facade, Hilton was a very unbalanced man who drank too much, despised Jews and 'niggers', and was well on his way to becoming a drug addict. The biggest turnoff, however, was a telephone call that Natalie received from Elizabeth Taylor. Now very happily married to producer Michael Todd and expecting a baby, Taylor felt obliged to warn Natalie of what could happen if she became Mrs.Nicky Hilton. For all his faults, Hilton was also a wife beater, Taylor claimed, citing an incident when he punched her to have a miscarriage. Although Taylor knew Wagner only slightly, she considered him a decent sort, a man who unlike Hilton, genuinely loved women and would make a good husband. 'You two were made for each other', Taylor told Natalie. 'You better grab him before somebody else does.'

Natalie and Robert Wagner picked up where they had left off as soon as he returned from Japan. So did Collins and Nicky Hilton. However, back then, there were also other rumors going on. Supposedly Natalie lost Hilton because Joan Collins was more sexually experienced and could 'out-woman' her at every turn.

Never mind that, Natalie's real reason for breaking with Nicky Hilton was that she caught on to his dangerous proclivities. Collins eventually did too, as they broke it off some time later.

Natalie Wood had just started 'Kings Go Forth', when 20th Century Fox sent Robert Wagner, on a cross-country publicity tour in connection with the release of 'Stopover Tokyo'(the film he made with Joan Collins). Realizing that R.J.(Robert Wagner) had as little control over his career then as she did, Natalie resigned herself to the fact that Joan Collins again would be traveling with R.J, chaperoned of course, by press agents. As it turned out, Natalie had nothing to worry about in the way of romantic competition. Collins by this time had dropped Nicky Hilton for a clandestine affair with producer and director George Englund, husband of actress Cloris Leachman.

In Robert Wagner's autobiography, 'Pieces of My Life', he writes:

'As she began work on West Side Story, Natalie was under huge pressure. Her career was approaching white heat; mine was no more than lukewarm.

My insecurities mounted, as did our disagreements. We argued. We made up. We argued again.

In June 1961, we got into a terrible row. The yelling ascended to screaming, culminating in Natalie running home to her parents. That week we announced a trial separation.

Then Warren came into the picture.

That summer, when I read about them as the hot young couple around town, I wanted to kill that son of a bitch. Life magazine was calling Beatty 'the most exciting American male in movies'. My last four or five pictures had been flops.

I was hanging around outside his house with a gun, hoping he would walk out. I not only wanted to kill him, I was prepared to kill him.

Everything was coming to an end - my marriage, my career, the life I had built. I remember thinking that if I couldn't kill Beatty, maybe I should kill myself.

It was either flip out or flip the page: I chose the latter, deciding to go to Europe. It was an easy decision because Hollywood was falling apart while wonderful pictures were being made in Europe.

I set up shop in London but all the time I was still in love with Natalie.

Every person has a favourite lover, who transforms their life. For me, it was Natalie. Nevertheless, I had to face reality. Natalie filed for divorce in April 1962 and it was granted that same month. There were signs that the clouds were lifting at least as far as my career was concerned. I made a movie with the young Steve McQueen and was offered a part in The Longest Day, the D-Day epic. And I renewed my acquaintance with Joan Collins, whom I'd dated before.

I actually introduced Joan to Tony Newley, whom she eventually married. We had gone to see Stop The World, I Want To Get Off, which Tony wrote and in which he starred, and that brought Joan and me to a screeching halt.

I asked her to go to Rome with me but she didn't want to because she didn't like flying - and she wanted to be with Tony. So I went on my own and met Marion Marshall in Rome.'(Marion Marshall would be soon after that, Robert Wagner's second wife)

Well, Joan Collins didn't play in masterpieces, it 's true, but still i discovered that she played in a number of interesting movies. Even her campy ones are fun because she managed to wear those roles well. With her glamour and her style, she manages to keep the attention. Tony Curtis in his autobiography 'American Prince' writes about working in the tv series 'The Persuaders!' with Joan Collins:

'Joan's bizarre behavior made her rather difficult to work with. In one scene, we're supposed to drive a little truck a couple of hundred yards to where the camera had been set up; then i'd stop the truck and we'd both get out. When the time came to to do the shot, the assistant director waved a flag, which was my signal to start driving, but Joan said,'Don't go yet. Please. I'm not ready. Let me get into the mood.' I leaned out and shouted, 'She's not ready.'

Joan started fixing her makeup in the side-view mirror. I waited and waited. Every now and then i'd look over at her. She kept fiddling with her face. Finally i lost my temper. 'Joan, will you stop acting like a cunt? Let's go get this shot, and then we can break for lunch.'

She said,'What did you say? You called me a cunt!' I said, 'I'm sorry Joan, but can we please go?' The assistant director waved the flag, and i drove to my mark. When I went through initial "stewardess" training 30 years ago we flew training flights on the week-ends. There was a funny black guy in my class who had Joan on his flight. When he recognized her in first class he excitingly exclaimed, "Oh my gawd, you're Alexis from Dynasty". Joan lowered her sum-glasses, looked up at Harold and said, "Darling it's Di-nas-ty" in her British accent. He said she was very charming.
