If it does mean appearing to be, why has almost everyone mentioned seem more gay than straight to me?? I was thinking of people like Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Russell Crowe.
Aside from those 3, I think every single actor in film, tv and theater could very easily be gay.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 4, 2010 1:15 AM |
Totally agree with R26. Peter Sarsgaard. At the Oscars before I realized it was him I thought, who is that gay man presenting an award?
And then I saw An Education and even his character in the movie came off as queer as a $3 bill.

I sat next to Rick Bayless and his wife at a play a couple of weeks ago.
First off, he is smaller than I imagined. I'm 5'8" and when the play was over and we stood up, I had to be at least 2 inches taller than him.
Secondly, his wife is at least 3 inches taller than him, much wider, older, and looks like your standard middle-aged lesbian.

I believe this is progress and akin to how at earlier times, and still today for many, people who quickly impress as straight, were actually gay.
It's a step in breaking stereotypes.
When I look at Peter Sarsgaard I might easily assume he's gay, most likely because the guys he reminds me of I know to be gay; however, that doesn't mean that he is, and indeed he isn't.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 18, 2010 1:29 PM |
I agree with many of the names put forward, and especially Nicholas Sparks.
For some reason, author Dean Koontz has always reminded me of a hot 70s-era gay. I usually have pretty good gaydar, but in his case, I'm not sure it's working, as I've never read or heard any rumours about him.

r5, Matthew Morrison is gay. A friend of mine studies theater at NYU and she has friends who worked in theatrical productions with Matthew. Here's the thing - Matt was quietly out as a gay man before he was famous, back when he was just a stage performer. From what I've been told, it wasn't public knowledge, but people 'in the know' were aware. Now that he's on Glee and a major celebrity, he's suddenly "straight." It's sad, but he's doing what he thinks he has to do to get ahead, but expect Matthew to say he's "too busy to date" in plenty of interviews.

My father ran into Frank Bielec at a restaurant in Houston, and told him that my mother was a big fan of "Trading Spaces". When we asked what Frank was like in real life, my father replied that he seemed just as gay as he did on the show.

I don't know if Crowe is gay but I wouldn't be surprised. Before he hit is big, he played the trannie in Rocky Horror Picture Show. And the first movie I ever saw him in was a small, gay movie called "The Sum of Us."
Often people who get roles in small gay movies do so because they know the other (gay) people behind the film socially.

The definition of "ostensibly" is closer to "supposedly" or "purports to be" than "appearing to be." "Ping" means "appearing to be" gay, not necessarily IS gay.

Russell Crowe is not gay (who would want him to be anyway?).
The Sum Of Us was a gay-themed movie aimed purely at heterosexuals - a heterosexual fantasy of gayness. None of the actors were gay and nor were the characters if you ask me.
Hets like straight-acting gays too (in their movies).
by Anonymous | reply 285 | March 24, 2013 8:59 AM |
Y'all have posted many men and a few women who we all know are gay, but haven't announced it, and most never will. It would be as if this thread was started 4 months ago and someone said Anderson Cooper.
My understanding of ostensibly straight is that there are many public figures living full on straight appearing lives, sometimes including a wife and children, but because we are all genii with dead on gaydar, we see through the illusion. Having said that 1. Skip Bayless 2. Amy Madigan 3.John Edwards 4.Mark Cuban 5.Chris Isaak 6.Obama and Reggie Love(his Body Man emeritus) 7.Rahm Emmanuel 8.Sean Hannity (don't laugh, I can make a damn good case for this 7.Laura Ingraham 8.Jay Z, Russell Simmons, Diddy and 50 Cent(this is common knowledge in the Black music industry 9.Ryan McReynolds 10.Scott Disick, Rob Kardashian and Lamar Odom 11. Jaime Foxx
I could list 25 more but I am hogging the thread. One last thing, for the poster who said Peter Bergman, doubt no longer. 20+ years ago when he was still on All My Children, I had him and his twink in F/C from BOS to Bangor Maine in the summer. They were kissing and hugging like 16 year olds the whole flight.

Holly Robinson Peete and Terry Ellis (Envogue). I think they are in love with each other, especially with the way that Holly describes their relationship. Holly straight up said when they met each other in person in the early 90s that it was love at first sight and how they went on a date.... They also love kickin it with Oprah and Gayle (another couple that strongly PINGS lesbian).

I always got the sense Rick Schroder was suppressing some same-sex feelings for his career's sake. In his personal life he claims to be a happily married Mormon Republican family man, but throughout his film and TV career he has displayed more sexual chemistry with males than females. And shown plenty of skin while doing so.

Didn’t Angelina Jolie once comment to the effect that Miller isn’t entirely straight back when they were married?
I’ve heard from people at a convention who stumbled across Fillion making out with some woman in an alcove at a hotel and trying to steal a base or two. If he isn’t straight, he’s REALLY committed to playing the part.
