Dearest Tasteful friends I’ve been relying on AI to help me design my home!

My maximalist, mid century living room is going to be so cute.

I’ve already painted the walls green and the wall art pictured is actual mid century fiber art that I already own.

We still need to rip up old wall to wall and install the chevron wood flooring, settle on a sectional in the right shade of rust orange velvet (the actual couch will be L shaped), replace our current hideouski white plastic vertical blinds with chocolate brown fabric ones and make a DIY uphosltered valance.

But honestly I couldn’t be happier with what I’ve been able to put together here. Chat gpt gave me a few suggestions but mostly was useful for just executing my vision and providing links to websites that offered the products I’m looking for

What do you bitches think of my dream living room? Too much?

What tool were you using to get that final image OP?

I like your colour scheme but I prefer a High Victorian/ baroque style myself, would like to try some prompts in whatever tool you using

by Anonymousreply 1October 18, 2025 3:19 AM

Are you familiar with Brini Maxwell? Just copy this, but tone it down by 70%.

I had a go using Copilot since its already in my laptop, not a bad start

Just a little dated….

I have that exact sofa in deep peacock blue. Do you really want to be so similar to me?

[bold]VERTICAL BLINDS![/bold]

No OP. Just no.

by Anonymousreply 6October 18, 2025 3:44 AM

Well yes, r6 I actually think vertical blinds are rather chic. I like the shadows they throw and appreciate the clean lines.

by Anonymousreply 7October 18, 2025 3:56 AM

Vertical blinds are trashy and low-rent.

by Anonymousreply 8October 18, 2025 3:58 AM

Here’s the bathroom. We are stuck with this really awful 70s gold tile for the foreseeable future and it’s remarkable how resistant the color is to playing harmoniously with other hues. Even the less aggressively ugly color schemes felt heavy and grim. Finally I just suggested that chat gpt do a wallpaper and the one it came up with is brilliant. Ive extracted it in 2d form and I’m going to use stencils and cardboard stamps to recreate it on the wall.

The three masted schooner string art is also mine in real life I made it from a vintage craft kit (pro tip you can get the most amazing kitschy craft kits from the 60s 79s and 80s for really cheap on eBay and then make your own piece of brand new vintage art)

Swap in a Nagel print for one of those ethnic-looking macramé things on the wall

by Anonymousreply 11October 18, 2025 4:08 AM

R8 im not even sure those words really mean much anymore?

My decorating style is mid century but my thinking isn’t. And even if they are “trashy and low-rent” lol who cares? I’m 48 years old, happily partnered we’ve got no one to please but each other.

don’t worry about my blinds, you’ll definitely never be sharing space with them.

by Anonymousreply 12October 18, 2025 4:08 AM

This sounds like fun. What AI platforms are you using?

by Anonymousreply 13October 18, 2025 4:11 AM
Well yes, R6 I actually think vertical blinds are rather chic.

Then there's no further point to anyone reading or posting in this thread OP/R7.

by Anonymousreply 14October 18, 2025 4:11 AM

R9 You can actually get those tiles spray painted in whatever colour you prefer, I've seen it done on a few home improvement programmes

Link is to a British company but I'm sure there's one near you, or you can even do it yourself

I'm not keen on vertical blinds myself and the thought of "clean lines" fills me with horror but I dont want to yuck somebody elses yum

It’s just chat gpt

Nagel would make more sense in the Memphis design office I’m trying to figure out for my partner. If you think my tastes are over the top you can’t imagine his.

He’s the kind of person who finds a side chair in the shape of a cheeseburger at home goods and seriously wants to bring it home

I’ve tried to refine his tastes a little by introducing him to Memphis and postmodernism, and so now he just wants every room in the house to look like a trapper keeper. I ca t say no to everything tho so we’re gonna give him a totally 80s office. God knows where I’ll find the furniture tho

R12, my comment did not require a response. You just have awful taste and you sound very dumb.

by Anonymousreply 17October 18, 2025 4:58 PM

I think it's great OP but you need a few pops of clarifying color. Black, brass, cream, or yellow.

by Anonymousreply 18October 18, 2025 5:02 PM

R8 babe I ,not you, decide which of your comments i will respond to, and how. You have a very telling belief that other peoples reactions are yours to police. Get some help for those control issues

by Anonymousreply 19October 18, 2025 6:52 PM

If you like it - fine. Besides the floor, it looks like a collection of bad 70s stuff.

This isn't a design - it's a couch in a room with 3 plants and two wall pieces. Far from a completed project.

Looks dark and gloomy to me.

by Anonymousreply 20October 18, 2025 7:30 PM

The plaid widow treatment is not a period correct pattern. This might work better

Inspired by this 1951 pattern

I hate orange, OP, so I'm out. Good luck.

by Anonymousreply 23October 18, 2025 9:42 PM

R21 It’s actually based on Scrymgeour, a tartan designed in 1971 and officially adopted as a clan tartan in1977 which is more or less exactly the time period I’m paying homage to

by Anonymousreply 24October 18, 2025 9:42 PM

It feels like you're trying really hard to be retro and period - as opposed to something people would actually want or live in.

Sorry for the harsh words - but it's awful. Might as well have fake wood-paneled walls and a console TV.

by Anonymousreply 25October 18, 2025 9:46 PM

Maybe it's because I'm a creature of the 70s and 80s but I just hate dark orange and green mixed together. I couldn't wait til that trend would go away and now it's back, oh no!

by Anonymousreply 26October 18, 2025 9:51 PM
Well, yes, [R6] I actually think vertical blinds are rather chic. I like the shadows they throw and appreciate the clean lines.

But, OP, brown?

Um yes I’m anbsolutely aware of the “70s rec room tackiness that upsets yall but that’s kid of the point? I’m very consciously leaning into kitschy and playful choices.. I’m a huge huge fan of pop culture from the 60s 70s and 80s both high and low culture and I’m deliberately drawing from that to inform my choices here.

If I wanted a “tasteful” home I could decorate that in my sleep. Part of the pleasure of this process is researching the eras I’m trying to evoke and figuring out an elevated and fresh way to reinterpret these past styles.

Oh and yes there will be dark paneled walls on one side of the room going into th hallway. Real wood not fake but absolutely a loving homage to the basement rec rooms of my childhood

I’m sure you’ll be horrified to hear about my collection of 1970s vintage flicked velvet black light posters, and I’ll be sure to post when those are up too

You guys are a lot more boring than I would have expected

R29 - so purposefully offputting and tacky and unattractive. Look - if that's what gets you off - then fine.

But don't expect the rest of us to think it's chic, unique or has taste. It doesn't.

You're a tacky bitch - and you love it. Fine.

by Anonymousreply 30October 18, 2025 11:30 PM

R6, far better then horizontal ones.

by Anonymousreply 31October 18, 2025 11:33 PM

It doesn't seem a fresh interpretation. If it is, excuse my design ignorance.

by Anonymousreply 32October 18, 2025 11:33 PM

Way to go, OP! I, too, am a creature of the '70s, and I'm sick of the era and of the whole Midcentury revival, but the room in your first post is charming and cozy. As is your partner's-office idea, though normally I hate the '80s even more than the '70s! I can only assume that my positivity is the result of your succeeding with your "fresh interpretation". Having said that, I'm less fond of the bathroom, and I think it's the particular shade of orange in the curtain and towels. Would something lighter or brighter be wrong for the period?

by Anonymousreply 33October 19, 2025 12:14 AM

How about something along these lines

Not very mid-century then OP.

by Anonymousreply 36October 19, 2025 12:56 AM

It's missing something, OP. What it needs Turkish fabric on everything and of course matching caftan and slippers.

I like the way you forgo a coffee table since your gut is wide and level enough to hold a bag of Doritos and a Big Gulp.

by Anonymousreply 38October 19, 2025 1:17 AM

Stop using AI.

by Anonymousreply 39October 19, 2025 1:19 AM

The problem with the bathroom is that damn harvest gold tile . It looks good with nothing but greens oranges and browns . We already did green and orange in the living room but who wants a shit and piss colored bathroom?

Anyways here’s the bedroom: our gorgeous bed is by monsoon blue, quilt by schoolhouse, wallpaper by Cole and son will be a splurge but I’ve wanted this wallpaper for almost 2 decades

We have t been able to agree on sconces so lighting hasn’t been added yet

Looks like a cat's dream home. Scratching post carpet; rub along wall art

by Anonymousreply 44October 19, 2025 3:18 AM

R29 Good on you for breaking out of the dull boring "tasteful" mould so many seem to be stuck in and going your own way, your place sounds like its going to be great fun when you get it finished.
