What is the scariest thing that has ever happened to you? n

If you mean fun, spooky scary (as opposed to traumatic scary), it was the day I worked alone in an old building that made weird noises. If I had believed in ghosts I wouldn't have been able to deal with it.

Someone followed my friends home from a concert after they had stopped at 7-11 first, well after midnight. The car was going slow behind them and when they turned onto the street where my friend lived and my friend parked, the people in the car behind them got out with ski masks on. My friend backed out of the driveway so fast. She drove around the neighborhood until they saw someone coming home late at night, and ran into their garage. Later said friend(s) came pounding on my door to call the police. The police didn't come until 5 am. We heard later that the Jack in the Box down the street from our neighborhood had been held up by people matching the car and the ski masks. I wonder if she avoided a home invasion by leaving the driveway. (This was in the late 80s before cell phones)

I've shared before: in the Yellowstone back-country, I went backpacking solo to a lake deep in the wilderness. I did everything right -- kept a tidy campsite, strung up my food and all odorous items from the designated pole, ate my meals away from my tent -- only to have a grizzly enter my site and pace around my tent. I didn't sleep a wink that night!

I've always loved that "Mame" poster because it's clearly trying to show that it's going to be fun and glamorous, and yet all it shows is how dreary and dismal the movie actually is.

A man dressed in 19th century Jack The Ripper clothing followed my friends and I while we were trick-or-treating on Halloween night in 1984. I was 5 and my friends were 8 and 9. We hid behind a tree in a schoolyard and he was definately looking for us. Then we ran home.

I found a dead person - a guy in a wheelchair was slumped over behind a gas station. I was driving through the night to get to my mom's In Connecticut. I was so sleepy that I pulled into a gas station parking lot to take a short nap. It was closed, and I had to pee really bad. I walked around the back to go pee, and I spotted the guy leaning forward. I turned on my phone light to see and it scared me so bad. I ran back to my car for a minute (Mary!) to think. I called 911 - this was rural Connecticut - they took almost 30 minutes to get there. It was so horrifying.

I got on a roller coaster at Six Flags but I was having trouble with the mechanism latching over my wide shoulders. I couldn’t get the attention of the attendant and I was scared shitless I was going to fall out while in the air.
Just then there was a lightning strike and a downpour. Everyone was ordered off. If that thunderstorm had not popped up when it did, I probably would have died.

r20 No, I don't. I wish I did. This was about 10 years ago. I've searched a few times for information, but never found anything. I wish I had thought to stick around, or even call the county sheriff's office the next day or something. I regret it, because I am much nosier now than I was back then!

Seeing my father driving around before he died, suffering from Parkinsons and also intoxicated was pretty scary.
My mother eventually persuaded him to hand over his keys.

Two years ago my uncle died from Alzheimer's. The day before he died, I was watching tv and all of a sudden, birds started crashing into my window. Hundreds of birds and this lasted for almost an hour. Some of the birds died and others flew away. I was living in a 4-plex and one of the neighbors came outside to see what was happening. It had never happened before and I had been living there for 7 years. Then I had the idea to look online to see what this could mean and it said that someone in your family will die soon. The next day, my uncle was dead but strangely enough, I was the only one who was warned with the birds and not his wife or children.
Then a week later, his face would appear in my bedroom window every night. Initially, it creeped me out but then I just went to sleep and forgot about it. This strange image went away after a couple of weeks but it was definately the face of a man and my uncle's face. Again, this only happened to me and not his wife, children or brothers and sisters. I think it's because when he started getting sick, I tried to help him. I sent his wife some documentation about coconut oil for Alzheimer's and how a doctor treated her husband with it. Maybe his soul didn't forget about this.

Supposed slerp paralysis. I was awake in my bed and unable to either shout or move. There was this terrifying demon like cresture sitting on my chest, with red eyes glaring at me I perceived at least 2 other creatures to the side. Eventually by force of will, I managed to move and they seemed to vanish. I left the lights on till sunrise and headed to the nearest Catholic church to get a bottle of holy water. In my best Max von Sydow voice I drenched every room with holy water shouting " the power of Christ compels you!". I have not had an experience like that since then.

I was looking for an apartment. This guy in the WORST part of North Hollywood had a roommate situation on Craigslist.
I went and stood outside the apartment complex on Lankershim. I texted the guy I was there and waiting outside.
Suddenly, a drunk Mexican guy runs across the street and starts taunting me. A black guy comes out of the apartment complex looking at me. I say "are you the one with the apartment?" He just stares at me. No answer.
The Mexican guy starts taunting me. He looks homeless and he's drunk. He makes threatening gestures toward me and I flinch. He says to the black guy "look! He's scared! Get him" but again the back guy just stares. I'm 6'5, by the way.
The Mexican guy is very close to hitting me now so I start running away on Lankershim. He chases me for a while. Finally I duck into a Jack in the Box.
It was very scary and disconcerting. I have NO idea what the hell was going on.

R37 I once had a dream from a friends dead father that wanted me to to reassure him. It was bizarre I barely knew his dad and he had died years before. I think spirits will try to contact whoever they can get to at whatever time they can get to you.
I had an estranged grandmother who died and the next day I was out for a walk with my dog and saw an apparition walk right in front of me in the middle of the path. The dog saw it too annd he checked behind him the rest of the walk. He wasn’t scared. I figured it was her because of the timing. We were not close and did not have a significant connection I just figured she was a belt to make herself known to me

R40 rationally, I know this probably isn't true, but it's *possible* I was being set up to be robbed. Or worse.
The black guy and the Mexican guy were in cahoots. When I showed up and turned out to be 6'5 the black guy decided not to do it, but the Mexican sensed I was afraid and said to him "come on- get him."
At Jack in the Box, I looked back at the video the guy had sent of the place and it honestly looked like something a serial killer would make. I messaged him "what just happened? Where were you??" He replied "I was on the phone." I said I was going to call the authorities and he said "call whoever you want."
I have no idea what was actually happening, but it sucked.

My grandmother lived on the first floor of the house I grew up in, and my parents and siblings and I lived on the second floor. The stairway from the first floor to the second was in the rear of the house. My bedroom was up against that stairway.
My grandmother died in the house.
A day or two after the funeral, I was home alone and in bed sleeping because I’d pulled an all nighter for an exam. Then a noise woke me up.
The noise was the exact sound of my grandmother coming slowly up the old wooden steps. It has the exact same sound as her distinctive walk up those stairs I had heard so many times before.
I lay there in bed absolutely terrified. I heard the footsteps get to the door in our kitchen but then heard nothing else. I lay there, completely awake and shaking, until I heard my mother come home from work. I decided not to talk about it.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 19, 2025 6:46 AM |
I grew up in the woods with few neighbors around. Our house was surrounded by hundreds of acres of forest. When I was around 10 years old, I remember waking up in the middle of the night and seeing what looked like a flashlight beaming directly through my bedroom window, as if someone were trying to look into the house. I immediately put my head under the covers and waited for it to go away. After what felt like an eternity, I mustered enough courage to peek out from under my blanket and the light was gone. In retrospect, I have no idea why I didn't go get my parents. I don't even think I told them that it happened.

My thrills as a thirteen year-old involved stealing my parents’ car late at night - Delta 88.
GM was not known for quality in the early 80s and I’d get stuck with a carburetor in hat would stick or stuck to n snow.
My dad was becoming increasingly frustrated and violent - I was most likely punishing him,. Pushing a running car put of a snowbank, fallen ng on my face, before chasing after a vacant car isno way to go through life.
More GM weirdness - my brother kept a crashed Cutlass Supreme. I dug through the-seats/ashtrays/glovebox for money or gum periodically. Inside of the dash vent was a burnt devil.no irises, just the face of a charred head and white eyes.

I was 6 when my grandfather died. I remember we were all at their place on the farm, and the day before he had been taken to the hospital. He had lung cancer, so spent his days in bed coughing and gurgling - it made me scared to go into see him. My grandparent’s bedroom was on the main floor, and we slept in the basement. I woke up in the morning and no one was around. I climbed the stairs, and heard the familiar coughing and gurgling, which surprised me, and made me run outside, where I found my mom and grandma. I asked my mom why they brought grandpa back home when he was still sick, and she said he died in the hospital early that morning. It’s funny how I remember that so vividly to this day. I wouldn’t say it was scary, just more spooky.

Luckily we were going uphill on a low traffic residential street, so we just sort of coasted to a crawl while my mom tried to take control of the wheel. I think we bumped into the back of a car parked on the street, but we'd slowed to less than walking speed by then. Dad snapped out of the seizure a few moments later, and we finished the drive home once everyone's nerves were settled.
