by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 11, 2025 7:36 PM |
r46, the Oscars always value stardom higher than acting for the In Memoriam segment, which is why Bing Crosby got the last position the year Joan Crawford died. He was the bigger box office star.
That being said, i think the final In Memoriam position will go to Redford over Keaton because he was not just a huge movie star in his day but was also an Academy Award-winning director.

Nicholson supposedly has dementia, yet he's been papped at basketball games. Realistically he could still attend games, but I would think someone with his level of fame, the family would have kept him out of public view if it were true.
Beatty is also reported to have dementia. I don't think I've seen him since the big Oscar fuck up.

R72, someone has to gently take Carole Bayer Sager aside and talk to her about her wig choices. Also, someone over the age of 30 should never wear anything that resembles a pot leaf, even a dead pot leaf.

Diane Keaton actually had genuine acting talent and could stretch herself when asked, as in Mrs. Soffel and Looking for Mr. Goodbar. But she was a star like Katharine Hepburn was: she mostly did the same thing over and over again (which was to play her own personality type) because audiences loved it so much.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | October 11, 2025 8:12 PM |
R87, braindead was not one of the qualifications.
R92, are you for real? You're comparing different eras and for that reason alone Redford wins every single time.
Even though the industry doesn't exactly welcome the indies with open arms, Redford did more for independent filmmakers than any other singular person. He also managed to stay a part of mainstream Hollywood by acting and directing commercial films. He'll get the last slot.
We need to start a new thread at the end of the year and start listing who we feel will make the In Memoriam. We can duke (not mayonnaise) it out to see who gets the last close-up.

File this under 'Only on Datalounge'.
So it begins, the annual debate over the Oscars In Memoriam because obviously whoever gets the final slot is the true star of the dead. A proudly idiosyncratic Datalounge tradition. Odds currently favor Diane Keaton, but Redfordâs corpse could pull an upset.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | October 11, 2025 9:32 PM |
She was an old time movie star actress in my opinion, in that she had a wholly unique look and persona. There was nothing method-y about her acting, and she wasnât always inspired â I never think sheâs very good in âThe Godfatherâ movies, mostly because I sense she was bored by the character of Kay.
But when she was given a role that really piqued her interest, she was astonishingly good â I especially loved her in âRedsâ and âThe Little Drummer Girl.â She often did her best work in extremely flawed-but-interesting movies that fell between the cracks. And in the bigger, starrier movies, she could, by the force of her charm and personality, make you think she was beautiful and irresistible, showing a little of what must have fascinated men as disparate as Woody Allen, Warren Beatty and Al Pacino. When Jack Nicholson looks at her in âRedsâ and says, âWhat a heartbreaker you are, Louise,â we believe him and know it to be true.
I was lucky enough to meet her three times â once when she was clad head-to-toe in a black leather outfit âcoat, leggings, boots, the works â and the second time in a winsome sailor dress right out of âReds,â and both times she was warm, funny, completely charming, genuinely captivating.
She made you feel good. And she did that in her movies too.

Will no one here mention how Diane hearkened back to those marvelous iconic screwball comediennes of the 1930s - Myrna Loy, Carole Lombard, Claudette Colbert, Rosalind Russell and Irene Dunne?
The talent, intelligence and charisma to be charmingly funny yet still beautiful. I don't think another actress since the 1940s has ever captured that madcap quality as much as Diane Keaton.

At the time I wondered if it was an affair. I suppose it may have been, but with the stories about dementia, I wonder now if she could tell she was already losing herself and felt she couldnât live alone, needed a minder.

[quote] There will never be another Diane Keaton. She cannot be repeated.
The modern version of her, albeit paling in comparison, would be Emma Stone. She fills the Diane Keaton persona in Hollywood. She can do comedy and earn dramatic Oscars.

Among many highlights she was utterly exquisite in the massively underrated Manhattan Murder Mystery. The scene where she is tipsy at the wine tasting and then see's the dead neighbour passing by on a cross town bus always makes me roar with laughter, just sublime.

Not true of Davis, R132--the characters and Davis' portrayals in Of Human Bondage, Jezebel, Dark Victory, The Old Maid, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, The Letter, The Little Foxes, Now Voyager, All About Eve, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, Strangers, and The Whales of August all stood on their own as unique creations.
The same could be said for Keaton's performances in The Godfather series, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Reds, Shoot the Moon, Crimes of the Heart, and Marvin's Room.
The beauty of it was that (often, maybe not always) when it called for it, both demonstrated a range far beyond their usual shtick.

In 2023, Coppola finally explained what attracted him to Keaton, responding to a query from the actress herself. âI chose you, because although you were to play the more straight/vanilla wife, there was something more about you, deeper, funnier, and very interesting,â he said, adding, âI was right.â
She compelled her fellow actors and directors with her one-of-a-kind persona. In 2017, the American Film Institute honored her with the Lifetime Achievement Award. During the ceremony, Beatty enthused over his co-star and one-time flame, calling her âbrilliant, beautiful, passionate, authentic.â âIf you are lucky enough to cast Diane, you realize very quickly the truth in that old axiom that character is plot,â Beatty said. âWell, casting is character. Diane Keaton is a plot. She is an unpredictable, mysterious, suspenseful, constantly surprising, sometimes comedic, sometimes tragic, always engaging plot. The woman is a story.â

I liked her singing voice, which wasn't strong but had enough technique and emotion to make a song her own. She sang in "Hair," "Annie Hall," "Reds," "Radio Days," and "The First Wives Club," and I'm probably missing a few others. I think her last recording was in 2023 and is best forgotten , a dire Carole Bayer Sager song, "First Christmas," on which she sounds horribly autotuned. This was from the Steve Martin tribute at the Kennedy Center in 2007--unvarnished and sweet.

Diane recorded an album around 1977/78 with Brooks Arthur producing, but it was never released. I have a feeling it would have given her a whole other career had it been. She sang on Carson all the time. I always wondered why she stopped appearing on his show. They had a great rapport together and he was clearly a big champion of her talent.
Carole was a close friend. Alana Stewart was another. They posted on Instagram earlier.
My forever friend. i will miss you so much. Be at peace now. i love you with all my heart.

Really sad for her. She had such iconic presence, even if a somehow atrocious fashion sense, but one of a kind. She made her acting look effortlessly, unlike the men she worked with. Looking For Mr Goodbar, The Godfathers, Manhattan, Annie Hall and my favourite Manhattan Murder Mystery. Particularly liked how, generally, she was difficult to be pigeonholed (except for later on).
She never married, i think. Affected more than i would have thought.

This was a shock! In thinking about Keaton, I must say that I truly appreciate a lot of her performances, but sometimes she bothered me as an actress. I think the irritation came from the fact that she was just not as simple as the goofy, dizzy, sweet lady that said 'la-di-da.' There was a ruthlessness about Keaton that came through in many of her performances and added another layer to her characterizations so that you couldn't quite categorize her. You can see it in Annie Hall where the titular character can be quite self-involved and callous. I think this was a big part of her appeal, you couldn't pin her down. She could do sweet, goofy and dizzy, but there was also a cold, calculating, self-seeking quality that was just beneath the service. I assume this was a big part of the attraction for straight men as well.

In his recent memoir, Al Pacino writes about her very affectionately and humorously. They dated off and on for many years. The funniest anecdote is in his lawyer's office, where Diane, who was very savvy, responds to the lawyer telling Pacino, who had no interest in the business side of his career, that he is broke, by yelling:
"How could this happen? Do you know who he is? He. Is. An idiot. He's an ignoramus. When it comes to this, you've got to take care of him!"

R161 her film output since 2000, with the exception of Somethingâs Gotta Give, has been less than stellar. I think Hackman did more iconic films, and has another acting Oscar, but you could be right Keaton will get the first or last spot. Unless Nicholson, Beatty or Pacino dies by the end of the year. Morgan Freeman did a tribute to Gene at the Oscars earlier this year anyway.

After the "Still Life" book of old Hollywood p.r. photos was published, Gregory Peck, whose image she had written about in her introduction, sent her a very critical letter which made her reconsider her approach to the project:
[quote]After Still Life was published I received a letter from Gregory Peck. He wasnât pleased. He thought the book was stupid. On top of that he didnât appreciate being compared to a stuffed animal. It was such a lame, kitschy idea, he hoped I wasnât the mastermind behind it. He ended by saying my heartfelt introduction was total crap. It never entered my mind that Gregory Peck might feel bad about looking almost real in front of a fake backdrop. I was busy patting myself on the back for a book Gregory Peck dismissed as camp, and how, miracle of miracles, it captured the essence of taxidermy and how it was going to put me on the mapâwhich one Iâm not sure. Gregory Peck is on my long list of regrets I hope to be forgiven for. Iâm sorry I carelessly held him accountable for some publicistâs brainstorm. Iâm sorry I picked an iconic photograph that shed light on his stiff upper lip and abiding lack of affect, which hounded him throughout his career, like my own eccentricity hounds me.

Diane Keaton shared an appeal similar to Angie Dickinson.

Woody Allen probably didnât molest Dylan.
The obvious giveaway is that Allen rarely featured children in his films. Hollywood pedophiles usually surround themselves with children (Dan Schneider, etc). Allen never lived with Farrow, despite the opportunity that being around multiple children would have appealed to an actual pedophile.
The other thing that is rarely mentioned is that during vicious custody battles, mothers falsely accusing fathers of abusing the children to prevent them from getting custody is not uncommon. Dylan most likely believes she was molested, because thatâs what sheâs been told all her life by her mother. The story about being taken up into the attic and being molested evokes Dory Previnâs âIn the Attic With Daddyâ, which was on the other side of the record of the song she wrote about Mia stealing her husband, âBeware of Young Girls.â Additionally, Miaâs own brother is a convicted pedophile.
Never forget that after the child abuse investigation, Mia still planned on making Manhattan Murder Mystery and actually went to the costume fitting.
I read the nannyâs book and Dylan was most distraught at the time (repeating âMy poor, poor motherâ) because her mother would no longer be featured in Woody Allenâs movies. Miaâs enviable role as Allenâs muse extended her career far past the shelf life of many actresses in Hollywood, and Mia used to boast to her children that all the other actresses in Hollywood were jealous of her.

R243 very perceptive. It would explain the suddenness after appearing publicly so recently. Diane certainly would have chosen assisted suicide given the impact her own motherâs own decline due to dementia.
Keatonâs uniqueness can likely be tied to neurodivergence (females are believed to adapt better to it than males and may merely be branded as eccentric or quirky). Neurodivergence is highly hereditary (Keatonâs mother likely had it, as does her brother who has a more debilitating version) and neurodivergence is very closely linked to dementia in old age. I am neurodivergent myself and have thought about what I would do if faced with a diagnosis in my autumnal years, and assisted suicide seems the most rational and compassionate solution for myself.
I can see Keaton receiving the diagnosis, and using the past few months to get her affairs in order and chose to exit on her own terms.

Diane had skin cancer staring in her 20s, and she covered up because of that.
[quote]Diane Keaton maintained a mostly private life before her passing.
[quote]While the Something's Gotta Give actressâwho died in California at age 79, according to a family repâdidn't publicly disclose any major health issues in her final months, she had previously been open about how she struggled with cancer and bulimia throughout her life.
[quote]In fact, her signature hats were about more than just fashionâshe took her sun protection seriously after being diagnosed with skin cancer at age 21.
[quote]âItâs a family history,â she told the Los Angeles Times in 2015. âI remember my Auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad they removed her nose. My father had basal skin cancer and my brother had it. Itâs tricky with this skin cancer. Thatâs why youâve got to put the sunblock on.â
[quote]But Keatonâwhose cause of death has not been sharedâdidn't start taking care of her skin until later in life.
[quote] Back in my 20s I didnât pay attention much,â she admitted. âI didnât research and didnât really care and that was stupid because itâs dogged me my entire adult life, even recently. I didnât start sun care until my 40s.â
[quote]Still, after battling basal cell carcinoma in her 20s, she was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer decades later, which took two surgeries to remove, per the Times.

The Oscar show where Diane won for AH was the very first Academy Awards I ever watched in 1978 at age 11.
I remember it started later than it does today - 10 pm ET - and lasted until after 1 am. Mom went to bed long before but Dad let me stay up to the end watching with me.
A few hours later, at school (6th grade), Mr. R. couldn't believe that a few of us were up that late viewing to the very end.
That show was the 50th Oscars. It hard to believe that almost another 50 have taken place since.

Diame Keaton is excellent in the scene of The Godfather where Michael tells her at the wedding what sort of person his father is and she watches and reacts silently.
For someone so big and bold in persona, Francis Ford Coppola always writes personal, generous and humble remembrances of his deceased friends and colleagues. His tribute to Diane is no exception:
[quote] Words can't express the wonder and talent of Diane Keaton. Endlessly intelligent, so beautiful. From her earliest performances in "Hair" and throughout her amazing career, she was an extraordinary actor. I saw her in the film "Lovers and Other Strangers" and knew I had to have her play Kay in The Godfather, (which she told me she based on my wife Ellie) and her wonderful work in "Annie Hall" while simultaneously setting a new fashion trend.
