Gremlins (1984)

Let's discuss the Steven Spielberg-Joe Dante-Chris Columbus black comedy horror Gremlins (1984)

The film follows a small town as it is terrorized by Gremlins during the Christmas holiday.

Starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Hoyt Axton, Polly Holliday, Glynn Turman, Dick Miller, Judge Rheingold, Edward Andrews, Frances Lee McCain, Scott Brady, Corey Feldman, and Keye Luke.

Zach Galligan was so cute.

I loved this movie. Scary, funny, suspenseful.

My favorite part was when the mom threw the gremlin in the microwave, the gremlin exploded, and then you hear the "ding" to indicate that whatever's inside the microwave is finished.

WHET to Zach Galligan?

by Anonymousreply 3October 11, 2025 6:30 PM

R3 He got old and married a chunky whore.

Polly Holliday as the town bitch was fun

by Anonymousreply 5October 11, 2025 6:34 PM

I got to see it before it opened in a screening on a 9:00 in the morning Saturday screening in NY. No reviews yet, no internet giving away anything and when the bar scene plays, the entire packed audience was roaring. I don't think I have ever laughed as hard before and since that scene.

R6 it is so much fun

by Anonymousreply 7October 11, 2025 8:09 PM

It still holds up really well. The special effects are impressive, even now. The only part that bothers me is the opening narration, which feels out of place.

Also, as many have noted over the years, the rules for the Mogwai are questionable. When does "after midnight" end?

by Anonymousreply 8October 11, 2025 11:55 PM

Hoyt Axton was sexy. (Sigh) yes, I like big bears.

by Anonymousreply 9October 12, 2025 12:19 AM

I went to a special screening of it in NYC a couple weeks before it premiered. A friend of mine who worked in PR got the tickets. I remember we sat behind *porn star Jack Wrangler and his wife Margaret Whiting.

*When there really was a such thing as a porn STAR!

I got booed for laughing at the dead dad in the chimney scene. I was into dark humor at the time, nowadays I would be among the booers.

R8, the sequel asks the very same question. But before it gets answered, a gremlin pops out of a computer console and attacks.

by Anonymousreply 12October 12, 2025 1:19 AM

I was only 12 but loved how dark and nasty it was. The scene where the snowplow bursts through Mr. Futterman’s living room and just cuts away as he and his wife are screaming is perfect. (They survived).

by Anonymousreply 13October 12, 2025 1:21 AM

Why does Corey Feldman's practically disappear from the movie?

by Anonymousreply 14October 12, 2025 6:35 AM

I love this movie and the microwave scene mentioned earlier. It was my favorite scene.

I really do miss seeing Phoebe Cates on the movie screen. Granted, I know she’s older and a little more filled out but I would love to see her make a comeback.

by Anonymousreply 15October 12, 2025 6:48 AM

Judge Rheingold??

by Anonymousreply 16October 12, 2025 6:54 AM

I was 10 and loved this movie so much. I remember going to see it with my friends. They had seen it already without me, and I met them off the bus in their return. We then all went together days later. I loved the cozy Xmas, small town Americana feel. This movie, Back To the future, Annie, Superman, Splash, E.T. Neverending Story and Mannequin all hold really special memories for me.

R4 She looks like she might be pregnant there. She is not chunky or fat. You must have an eating order.

by Anonymousreply 18October 12, 2025 8:00 AM

I can't listen to "Do you hear what I hear?" without thinking of this movie.

by Anonymousreply 19October 12, 2025 8:51 AM

I loved this movie. Zach Galligan was gorgeous. I'm going to watch both of the movies tonight.

by Anonymousreply 20October 12, 2025 9:39 AM

The modern day Gremlins are MAGATs

by Anonymousreply 21October 12, 2025 9:45 AM

R14, a lot of cutting happened. Judge Reinhold had a scene where he is sitting in the bank alone after the Gremlins attacked and it was cut. You do hear Feldman on the radio at the end but that’s it. At least he got the slingshot scene.

by Anonymousreply 22October 12, 2025 10:13 AM

This movie even followed “the Black person dies first” trope.

Poor Glynn Turman.

by Anonymousreply 23October 12, 2025 10:14 AM

Looking at IMDb, the young grandson who sells the Mohawk in the beginning is now 55 years old.

!

by Anonymousreply 24October 12, 2025 10:15 AM

*Mogwai!!!

Damn you auto correct.

by Anonymousreply 25October 12, 2025 10:16 AM

[quote]Why does Corey Feldman's practically disappear from the movie?

Why is 20-something Zach Galligan hanging out with a middle school age kid anyway?

by Anonymousreply 26October 12, 2025 10:33 AM

R14, you wanted MORE Corey Feldman?

by Anonymousreply 27October 12, 2025 11:15 AM

If I can just insert some “Gremlins 2” in here, what makes no sense is that it’s almost midnight and the food court of a corporate office building is humming along like it’s the noon lunch hour. I’m referring to the scene with Patrika Darbo.

by Anonymousreply 28October 12, 2025 11:18 AM

[quote] Judge Rheingold??

My beer is Reingold the dry beer. Think of Rheingold whenever you buy beer. It's not bitter it's not sweet. It's the extra dry treat. Won't you try extra dry Reigngold Beer.

by Anonymousreply 29October 12, 2025 3:11 PM

Christopher Lee, who was in Gremlins 2, said Joe Dante was one of his favorite directors to work with.

by Anonymousreply 30October 12, 2025 3:20 PM

I assumed it was after midnight until dawn.

by Anonymousreply 31October 12, 2025 3:46 PM

The Futtermans seemed so cozy in their home with the fake log fire. Then the Gremlins ruined it.
