"Lawyers for Luigi Mangione asked a New York federal judge Saturday to dismiss some criminal charges, including the only count for which he could face the death penalty, from a federal indictment brought against him in the December assassination of UnitedHealthcare’s chief executive."

Why is the word "assassination" getting bandied about every time some non-poltician or non-major political leader is killed? Charlie Kirk wasn't "assassinated," nor was the UnitedHealthcare head. They were murdered.

Law & Order did their "Luigi" episode on Thursday. I hated Nolan by the end.

The Merriam-Webster definition of "assassinate":
[quote] 1: to murder (a usually prominent person) by sudden or secret attack often for political reasons
Charlie Kirk was shot for political reasons by someone he had never met before; the CEO of United HealthCare was shot because Luigi Mangione (who had also never met him before) wanted to make a statement about health care.
Yes, they were both assassinated, by definition.

Kirk's killer did not act on any particular political agenda, and Mangione didn't have much of a political agenda, other than his hatred of corporate pharma. "Assassinate" is a big word for what happened to them. Julius Caesar was assassinated; MLK was assassinated. These two were taken out.

Was John Lennon assassinated or murdered? He was bigger than Jesus.
