Trump announces new 100% tariff on Chinese imports, after stock market sell-off

China imposed limits on rare earth minerals a day earlier.

We know.

This happened 12 hours ago.

Also, your headline is backwards. The stock market sell off was because of the tariff tweet. The tariffs were not announced after the stock market sell off.

Total fail of a post, OP.

Trump bragged that many countries are kissing his ass and Xi basically said not me. Trump is thie worst president in US history. He's like a fly that won't leave you alone.

My own funds took a hit overnight but I try to be stoic and not panic. I do watch the markets, and probably a little too closely. I will be ok (diversified, etc), but I wring my hands about the quality of life we can expect in retirement.

My funds took a hit, but not as big as one might expect.

I'm praying that the markets had already accounted for such stupid for the most part, so that only a few very highly volatile stocks and industries with huge exposure are actually taking a huge hit.

HEY, R2!

Have some fucking RESPECT.

If Trump actually does manage to end the Gaza conflict, that's going to be a bitter pill to swallow.

Of course, he'll claim "credit" for it even if it doesn't work.

by Anonymousreply 6October 11, 2025 4:29 PM

R1, OP is correct. Trump announced the tariffs after the market closed. The Truth Social rant came earlier in the day. He was angry about China over rare earth controls and that sent the market into sell-off mode.

by Anonymousreply 7October 11, 2025 4:38 PM

You want rare earth I can get you rare earths.

by Anonymousreply 8October 11, 2025 4:42 PM

R6 can't find the article now, I think it was an international news source, but I read that Israel is already violating the fresh agreement and blaming Palestanian encroachment into territory recently occupied/claimed by Israel. Israel will never uphold any agreements and the Zionist regime will always whine "self-defense" to justify genocidal actions. We've all seen this pattern play out over and over and over.

by Anonymousreply 9October 11, 2025 5:12 PM

R7, you are wrong. The sell off was because of his rant on truth social.

by Anonymousreply 10October 11, 2025 5:19 PM

R10, that's exactly what I said. MORON RANT FILLED WITH THREATS AGAINST CHINA = SELL-OFF. TARIFFS LATER THAT DAY AFTER MARKET CLOSE.

by Anonymousreply 11October 11, 2025 5:24 PM

R9 I'd say that I feel terrible for wanting on some dark level for it to fail just to shut Trump up - but of course nothing will shut him up. It'll be someone else's fault, I'm sure.

Well, at least someone benefitted.

[quote] BREAKING: Look at this.

[quote] A new crypto account was opened yesterday morning.

[quote] 30 minutes BEFORE Trump's announcement of 100% tariffs on China, it added a huge multi-million dollar levered Bitcoin short position, per YF.

[quote] The market dumped. The trader made a profit of $192 million in two hours.

[quote] Unusual.
