Stock market tanks 10 Oct 2025. Trump will impose 100% tariff on China ‘over and above’ current rates, escalating trade war
Wall Street investors were taking Trump seriously in the wake of his initial threat of economic retaliation on Friday. Stocks sank after the president’s morning social media post. The Dow fell 879 points, or 1.9%. The broader S&P 500 dropped 2.71% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 3.56%.
Trump said Friday he would impose a 100 percent tariff on China “over and above any Tariff they are currently paying” effective November 1 – massively escalating his trade war amid a heated dispute over export controls on rare earths.

Earlier in the day, Trump had blasted Chinese leader Xi Jinping on social media over China’s ramped-up efforts to impose export controls on critical rare earths, threatening economic retaliation and saying he no longer sees any reason to meet with Xi during a scheduled visit to the region later this month. At the time, Trump also threatened economic penalties against China, warning, “Dependent on what China says about the hostile ‘order’ that they have just put out, I will be forced, as President of the United States of America, to financially counter their move.”

The US is only 14% of China's export markets. China are simply finding other deals with other countries to fill this gap - such as the soy bean fiasco.
Most of the US's "traditional" allies are quietly doing this too. The US can no longer be trusted and other countries won't jeopardize their own economies because the US is a rapidly crumbling democracy and morally bankrupt society who has different values than most other advanced western nations.
Not to mention that the American people are the ones who end up paying these Trump tariffs.

As much as it pangs me to see my portfolio take a hit, I rejoice at this news. If my father could risk his life fighting totalitarianism in WWII, I could at least risk my financial security in the fight against our generation's existential struggle. And I especially love how this more electorally relevant news helps to offset the news about Gaza.
