Samantha Wynn Greenstone knows her husband is gay, okay? She knew he was gay when they met in a San Diego production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” She knew he was gay when he proposed. She knew he was gay when they got married in November. He’s not bisexual. She’s not in denial. That hasn’t stopped them from being in a committed monogamous relationship for nearly 10 years. “If anything, I think we are taking the sanctity of marriage to a whole new level,” said Greenstone, 38, smiling widely as she sat beside her husband, Jacob Hoff, 32, at their home in Los Angeles. That morning, Hoff made Greenstone her new favorite breakfast: an English muffin with egg, cheese and avocado.
He’s gay. She’s straight. They’re happily married.

“It’s kind of been one of her pregnancy things, English muffins,” he said. “Before pregnancy, we ate no bread. We were gluten-free people.” Yes, she’s pregnant. Yes, it’s his. And yes — if you must know how they conceived — in Greenstone’s words, “we birds’d and we bees’d.” Hoff and Greenstone are part of a small but growing community of people who are opening up on social media about their nontraditional permutations of partnership, amending “marriage” with clarifying adjectives such as “platonic,” “queerplatonic,” “aromantic” or “mixed-orientation.” For months, Greenstone and Hoff have been making content about their “lavender marriage.” The term has it roots in the Lavender Scare of the mid-20th century, when a moral panic stoked by Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-Wisconsin) and an executive order signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower led to a purge of workers suspected of homosexuality from the federal workforce.

Hoff and Greenstone have turned their marriage into a career. Social media is Hoff’s main source of income. (Greenstone also works as a personal assistant.) They spend much of their day making videos and responding to skeptics, supporters and other curious commenters. “We found a whole group of people who had never heard of us before who were just like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m in this relationship and I didn’t know that there were others like me out there!’” Greenstone said. “You also get the people who are like: ‘I have a gay best friend. Do you think we’re in love?’” Greenstone said. “And we have to be like …” “No, honey,” her husband answered.

That breakfast sounds great! Where do you put the avocado -- between the muffin & the egg with cheese on top, or do you squash the avocado on top of the muffin/egg/cheese stack? I have all those ingredients, I'm going to try that!

I don't have a problem with this arrangement. If it works for them, more power to them both.
I do have a problem with married men who've had more dicks up their poop shoots than 20 gay men put together, claiming they're "straight."
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 9, 2025 6:54 PM |
The great thing for him with them not having sex is that she will never see how discolored his asshole is getting over the course of their long term monogamous relationship. He better not die first or she might find discover his hole looks as brown and puckered as a tufted club chair.

A childhood friend (female) married a gay man she met in college. 30 years later, they're still together with two daughters. I don't get it. I have my theories, but I don't get it.
I also don't get how, when he took a trip (solo) to the part of the country where her parents lived, he expected to stay with said parents on his way to a well known gathering place for the gays. And I guess he expected them to be cool with that. WTAF?
To each his own, I guess.

Know a couple. When she became aware he was gay, was glad he wasn't cheating with women. Thirty years later, still married.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 9, 2025 9:00 PM |
Still, I think it's less worse than watching those stupid, self-esteem lacking women who marry gay porn actors (retired or active) and even have children with them.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 9, 2025 9:05 PM |
I do understand a couple like this reaching some understanding or some deal, while raising kids together. What I don't believe for one second is that this is some monogamous, purely heterosexual relationship, which is the other part of what they claim.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 9, 2025 9:08 PM |
Some of you and your ideas of relationships and how they can work are so provincial. Gay men have getting women pregnant for Millennia. You can have sex with someone you love, to give them a child if they want one. People can both want children and having sex is the cheapest way for it to happen. It's not like the head on your shoulders is going to explode or you're gonna throw up on her face. People can be sexless and perfectly happy. And most, MOST, long lasting marriages end up being very deep friendships anyway. We all enter the world alone and it would be a lovely thing for anyone to find someone you connect with and want to pass your time on earth with - male or female. What works for other people doesn't have to make sense to you. If it works for them, that's all that matters.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 9, 2025 9:26 PM |
And I can believe all that r39 without believing at all for even a second that he doesn't have sex with other men on the side or that she is completely unaware of that. They have an arrangement clearly in which he fucks other guys, and she is cool with it. But for some dumb reason they choose to lie about it. That is the game that is being played, and it's stupid, and completely unbelievable.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 9, 2025 9:30 PM |
There are some people, because of trauma or whatever reason that are asexual and are most comfortable in non-sexual relationships. They probably know this about each other, and since that is the case, decided they might as well get married.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | October 9, 2025 9:33 PM |
So the message is it just takes the RIGHT woman to change a gay man to straight. Got it.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 9, 2025 9:35 PM |
They don't claim to have a sexless marriage for trauma or whatever other reason. They pretend to have an exclusively monogamous, heterosexual relationship. They are undoubtedly lying about that, even if they do have sex occasionally to produce kids. He is fucking other guys in addition. No question about it.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 9, 2025 9:37 PM |
No, you don't got it R42, because he's not straight. I think that's the entire point.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 9, 2025 9:48 PM |
You can’t claim to be gay but fuck women. You’re bisexual.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 9, 2025 10:01 PM |
If you can only get it up for women by thinking of guys...you're not bisexual
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 9, 2025 10:03 PM |
That's not true R45. There are tens of thousands of gay men walking the earth who had children the natural way. Closeted men have been doing it forever. And I think the point of this story is that they DON'T have sex.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 9, 2025 10:06 PM |
What do you mean by that r47? Clearly if closeted men are having children the natural way, they are having sex. Are you under the delusion that they are only having sex with women, ever?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | October 9, 2025 10:08 PM |
We've all known male/female couples where the man is obviously gay.

I’m going to oh dear this gently because it’s so cute. It’s actually “poop chute” but poop shoot is adorable.
I suspect some gay men are just doing this to have biological children and they just enjoy the company of the woman. And indeed why not?
I actually suspect these marriages are on the rise. I suspect Paul Downs, the creator of “Hacks” and a star (he plays the manager) is in one. He's SO VERY gay but married to a woman. And you know, Mazeltov. Whatever works for you.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 10, 2025 1:13 AM |
It depends on the woman's objective, R24. If she's concerned about her man leaving her, there's less of a chance of that if he cheats with women. If it's an ego thing, then cheating with men is way more preferable.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 10, 2025 1:19 AM |
I have no problem with this setup. If it works for them, go for it and have fun. She knows who he is and is fine with it and good for them. I was closeted in college and my early 20s and had sex with women. It's not that difficult, especially when you're young and just about anything can make your dick hard. I'm not saying that sex isn't important, but relationships are about so much more than fucking.

R48 I was replying to the comment that having sex with women makes you bisexual. That’s not always the case considering there are closeted gay men, not bisexual men, who have children. Fucking women didn’t make them straight or bisexual.
