How Kevin Costner Lost Hollywood

On-set brawls. Courtroom battles. Epic bombs. Why the world's most bankable cowboy is suddenly shooting blanks.

Time for him to retire and go Home on the Range. I loved that song as a child.

by Anonymousreply 1October 9, 2025 2:57 AM

Is this article from 1995?

by Anonymousreply 2October 9, 2025 2:58 AM

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked Horizon Chapter 1. The second installment was supposedly getting released in 2025, but given that we only have a few months left, I somehow doubt it's going to happen.

by Anonymousreply 3October 9, 2025 3:00 AM

I guess The Hollywood Reporter has never heard of Yellowstone.

by Anonymousreply 4October 9, 2025 3:03 AM

I guess r4 didn’t bother reading to the second paragraph.

But this article seems like someone has a vendetta against him. IMO picking on Kevin Costner is akin to picking on Henry Winkler. They’re both neat.

by Anonymousreply 5October 9, 2025 3:13 AM

“Horizon” should have been a TV miniseries. It had moments, but simply wasn’t good enough, and the oddest thing about it was how mediocre the cinematography was. Though most of it was shot outdoors in some of the prettiest western scenery you could imagine, it wasn’t shot in widescreen HD, no VistaVision or 60mm or IMAX, so it never had the epic sweep Costner promised. The whole project felt moldy, Costner is living back in the ‘90s, his heyday, whereas the business — and filmmaking — has grown way beyond him.

Oh, and his many problems couldn’t happen to a not-nicer guy.

by Anonymousreply 6October 9, 2025 3:21 AM

What did he do to West Bentley?:

“The incident with Wes was the line in the sand. Everything was different after that,” says another source who was also present for the fight with Bentley. “Everyone loved Wes and so that really made Taylor upset. Kevin and Taylor butted heads from there on out. It got very awkward.” (A spokesperson for Bentley confirmed the altercation, calling it a “work related argument during an emotional and physically tough scene,” which was “discussed and resolved.” Costner’s spokesperson declined to comment on the near fisticuffs.)

by Anonymousreply 7October 9, 2025 3:33 AM

He wasn't a great actor although he looked good.

by Anonymousreply 8October 9, 2025 3:36 AM

Terminally bland.

Not one iota of sex appeal.

by Anonymousreply 9October 9, 2025 3:44 AM

Satisfying hit piece. I hate Kevin Costener!

by Anonymousreply 10October 9, 2025 3:52 AM

It’s in the article, R7.

“But between takes, tensions boiled over. Costner, both star and executive producer, was pushing Bentley to ditch Taylor Sheridan’s script and play the moment his way. Bentley refused. He told Costner that he had signed up for a Taylor Sheridan show, not a Kevin Costner production. ‘Kevin didn’t like that, and he lunged at him,’ says a source who was present. ‘No fists were thrown, but they were in each other’s faces, pushing and shoving and just getting hot until they had to be separated.’ [Kelly] Reilly, according to one witness, was in tears. Production briefly shut down.”

by Anonymousreply 11October 9, 2025 3:57 AM

He sounds like Norma Desmond, trying to get her Salome project off the ground:

"But despite the legal headaches, the continuing costs and the reputational harm the Horizon debacle has caused him, he has shown no indication that he plans to cut and run from his vision of producing four epic Western films. He continues to pound the pavement looking for financing to finish the third and fourth installment."

by Anonymousreply 12October 9, 2025 4:09 AM

Costner is a shithead.

I can’t believe it, but he’s made me feel sympathy towards that skank ex-wife of his.

by Anonymousreply 13October 9, 2025 4:11 AM
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually liked Horizon Chapter 1

I didn’t mind it at all. In a world of a cavalcade of shitty streaming shows, it was hardly the worst of the lot.

I have no doubt he is a controlling asshole on set. But Taylor Sheridan too is a roided up psycho.

by Anonymousreply 14October 9, 2025 4:13 AM

^^^Kevin cheated the entire time he was married to both of his ex-wives& all his serious GFs^^^

A cheat and a LIAR!!

by Anonymousreply 15October 9, 2025 4:15 AM

He did whatever it took to take the Oscar for Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas. I feel resentment for that.

by Anonymousreply 16October 9, 2025 4:20 AM

But Taylor Sheridan owned& created Yellowstone, Kevin did not& became a giant pain in the ass. Kevin wanted more power& loves to be in CONTROL!!

by Anonymousreply 17October 9, 2025 4:21 AM

Neat.

by Anonymousreply 18October 9, 2025 4:21 AM

First off, Kevin Costner definitely had a comeback. He’s the most popular he’s been in like 25–30 years.

When I was a kid in the 90s, he was the least cool movie star. He wasn’t as handsome or daring as Gibson, Cruise, Willis, or Will Smith, and he didn’t have the charm or warmth of Tom Hanks. He always felt kind of stiff — like your dad’s favorite actor, not yours.

Then the big flops hit — Waterworld, The Postman — and he basically vanished. When he tried to come back with something edgier like Mr. Brooks, it didn’t land. It was too late.

But what’s funny is now everything that made him “uncool” back then actually works for him. Yellowstone turned his old-school, stoic, moral-cowboy vibe into his biggest strength. He’s not trying to be cool anymore — he is the genre.

He’s having the career everyone thought was over twenty years ago.

by Anonymousreply 19October 9, 2025 4:23 AM

And Horizon is definitely his “Salome”. Chris Hemsworth wanted to play the lead and Costner said no.

It probably would have done better with Hemsworth.

by Anonymousreply 20October 9, 2025 4:24 AM

You should work for him R19-talk about a puff piece.

by Anonymousreply 21October 9, 2025 4:27 AM

R19 He's a boring actor, has always been boring. Good looking, yes, and sometimes that's all it takes to get a foot in the door.

by Anonymousreply 22October 9, 2025 4:28 AM

In a Republican era like the current one, bland and boring is going to do well. Kevin Costner is a movie star for people in places like Arkansas and Nebraska.

by Anonymousreply 23October 9, 2025 4:33 AM

I recall reading he has a bad habit of demanding legit masseuses give him hand jobs.

by Anonymousreply 24October 9, 2025 4:37 AM

Oliver Stone wanted Harrison Ford for the lead in JFK but Ford said no so he could make some Jack Ryan movie instead. JFK would’ve been even better with Ford—and without Kevin Costner.

by Anonymousreply 25October 9, 2025 4:43 AM
I guess The Hollywood Reporter has never heard of Yellowstone.

No, they don't mention it in the entire article!

You are [italic]so[/italic] observant, r4. You must have read the linked article very closely!

by Anonymousreply 26October 9, 2025 4:47 AM
JFK would’ve been even better with Ford—

No silly, Ford was a Republican. JFK was better off with that nice man Johnson!!!

by Anonymousreply 27October 9, 2025 4:49 AM

I think I've only seen two of his movies, both with my parents (so movies I wouldn't ordinarily go to), but I disagree that he's only boring. The first movie was when he was an unknown in some western in the 90s, and I remember being impressed by him. I wasn't surprised when he became a star. Sure, he's not a charisma monster, but there's a place for his kind of presence.

As to Yellowstone, my Left Coast sisters were OBSESSED with it, and it seems to be doing very well abroad, too. So not only in red states.

by Anonymousreply 28October 9, 2025 5:05 AM

Costner was not an unknown in the 90s, R28.

by Anonymousreply 29October 9, 2025 5:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 31October 9, 2025 5:43 AM

It's kinda interesting to see how "Dances with Wolves" was, back in the day considered one of THE MOVIES that defined 1990 (or the early 90s in general), but now it seems totally overrated, forgotten and irrelevant to newer generations in contrast with other films from that year that are now everlasting cult classics like "Home Alone", "Ghost", "Pretty Woman", "Goodfellas", "Kindergarten Cop", etc.

JFK was definitely his best film during the 90s decade (I also enjoyed "Revenge" and "Tin Cup"). The Bodyguard endurance in pop culture is obviously because of the soundtrack (not because of him). Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves also seems forgotten (only remains sort of popular due to the annoying Bryan Adams song).

Then most of his 90s filmography are absolute turds like Wyatt Earp, Waterworld, The Postman, Message in a Bottle, For Love of the Game.

And I don't remember quite frankly if he had a relevan box-office hit movie in the 2000s. I only remember watching him in more massive turds like 3000 Miles to Graceland, Dragonfly and The Guardian.

by Anonymousreply 32October 9, 2025 5:48 AM

Robin Hood: Men in Tights is probably better remembered now.

by Anonymousreply 33October 9, 2025 6:16 AM

Alan Rickman is the only reason to see Robin Hood Prince of Thieves

by Anonymousreply 34October 9, 2025 6:40 AM
The first movie was when he was an unknown in some western in the 90s,

R28 - That was Silverado in 1985.

R24 - Many years ago, probably early aughts, I recall reading that he startled a female PR assistant who had been assigned to accompany him to some industry function where he would have to do chit chat with reporters on the way in. The moment the limo took off he was on her. He did stop when she protested. It was as though it was SOP.

by Anonymousreply 35October 9, 2025 8:26 AM

That westerns shit is soooo tired and boring.

by Anonymousreply 36October 9, 2025 8:34 AM
But for Costner, it was merely the latest unfortunate incident in a long series of unfortunate incidents, a career marked by feuds, walkouts, lawsuits, financing fiascos and a growing reputation for being, as one former colleague put it, “impossible.” ...All of which raises an obvious question, the one being whispered all across Hollywood right now, even among former allies: What’s going on with Kevin Costner?

This is a fairly easy one. Kevin Costner has high-functioning autism (Aspergers' Syndrome.)

*reputation for extreme privacy

*has an unusual mystique that's hard to pinpoint despite seeming lack of a personality

*obsessive interest in one thing nobody else cares about (westerns)

*insanely stubborn and difficult to work with due to theory of mind deficit common in autistic people

*wide-set eyes with clear, sparkling irises. Eyes tend not to focus on anything.

R32, even back in the day Dances with Wolves was considered rather lame, even if typical best picture fodder. I was in my twenties back rhen and went to rhe movies a lot but any movie with Kostner was a no-no.

I liked him in the preposterous fun Non Way Out (previous to his mega success).

by Anonymousreply 39October 9, 2025 9:49 AM

Field of Dreams is one of my favorite movies.

by Anonymousreply 40October 9, 2025 10:18 AM

@ 30 "No man has given more good bulge."

That comment is demeaning and, more important, completely false.

by Anonymousreply 41October 9, 2025 10:29 AM

I saw DANCES WITH WOLVES during lockdown for the first time since its release. If it hadn’t won the Oscars over Goodfellas, it would be considered a minor a gem, and certainly among the top rank of post-Golden Age westerns.

by Anonymousreply 47October 9, 2025 5:25 PM

Oops, you're right, R2. I was thinking of Silverado, which was 1985. Time flies. My trip to IMDB reminded me of Bull Durham, which I liked.

by Anonymousreply 48October 9, 2025 5:31 PM

I'm sure if he trimmed Horizon: An American Saga down to 2 hours, it would have done well. No one wants to see a 3-hour movie.

As far as him looking for billionaires, he could try sucking up to Jeff Bezos and his slutty wife. They seem to be star fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 49October 9, 2025 5:38 PM

I actually like WaterWorld and The Postman. That being said,Ive not once looked at Costner and thought "I want him in me deeply" .Not when he was young and not now. He thought he had all the power with Yellowstone and come to find out,he didnt. I loved how he was running around saying he would end it if Taylor didnt, then when it kept going on and was still successful he started acting like he'd gp back if they asked. Then Taylor killed his ass off in a very bland way !

by Anonymousreply 55October 9, 2025 9:35 PM

I liked him in Fandango. I'm sure his costars Judd Nelson and Sam Robards are drooling with envy over his 40-year career.

by Anonymousreply 56October 9, 2025 9:51 PM

It takes training and accreditation to be a real masseuse, r54. Whipping his cock out was kind of a trashy faux pas on his part and showed a lack of respect for their job.

by Anonymousreply 57October 9, 2025 9:59 PM

of course it did, on his part. On my part, I'd be willing to become quite the unprofessional while willingly giving the best professional.

by Anonymousreply 58October 9, 2025 10:04 PM

He could easily go to a pro or a happy ending massage place, but the thing is that they get off on making the other person uncomfortable. It's revolting to be around, not sexy.

by Anonymousreply 59October 9, 2025 10:37 PM

Don't forget when he told Madonna her show was "neat". It came off as condescending and almost belittling. Madonna got a lot of flak for being upset over it, but what else was she supposed to do with such a shitty response?

Of course, she had to apologize, being a woman and all.

by Anonymousreply 60October 9, 2025 10:37 PM

Who knew Costner and Al Gore have something in common besides being bland white guys?

by Anonymousreply 61October 10, 2025 12:01 AM

He’s forgettable, at best, as an actor. He isn’t quite as bad as Tom Cruise, but that isn’t saying much.

by Anonymousreply 62October 10, 2025 12:18 AM

Tom Cruise is annoying but he's not a bad actor.

by Anonymousreply 63October 10, 2025 12:36 AM

Tin Cup is one of those movies that’s perfectly cast and has a great ending.

by Anonymousreply 64October 10, 2025 1:32 AM

Cruise is a terrible actor. Even in Risky Business, you can see him trying really, really hard.

by Anonymousreply 65October 10, 2025 1:55 AM

He was 21 and that movie was 42 years ago, r65. That's the example you choose?

He was great in Magnolia and Collateral.

by Anonymousreply 66October 10, 2025 2:44 AM

And Born on the 4th of July.

by Anonymousreply 67October 10, 2025 2:53 AM

R43 it astonishes me that people still can’t piece together that when someone is branded as difficult to the point of being called “impossible” to work with - mind you, in Hollywood, an industry that already runs on hot air and inflated egos - it is very possible the person is autistic.

Among the traits most associated with high-functioning autism:

-Blunt communication and difficulty with teamwork and collaboration

-Discomfort in social politics

-Social naiveté

-Rigid adherence to personal principles and routine

-Intense focus on abstract ideas

The last one is important because autistic people are believed to compromise a significant number of revolutionaries in world history. One of the most accurate depictions of high-functioning autism was Paul Giamatti’s portrayal of John Adams in the HBO limited series of the same name. John Adams was a brilliant revolutionary who became a terrible president because he was unable to get along with people. This scene with Franklin is priceless.

Other revolutionaries believed to be autistic include Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, T.E. Lawrence and David Ben-Gurion.

The standoff becomes somewhat amusing when you consider that Wes Bentley is also likely on the spectrum (Bentley famously melted down as soon as he achieved success with American Beauty).

Two autistic people engaged in a standoff is brutal because neither will ever consider compromising. They just go on, and on, and on.

Look at JK Rowling versus the Transes.

Not the "spectrum" troll. Marx was many unexpected things (raised Protestant, married a Catholic, for example), but zero evidence he was "on the spectrum".

by Anonymousreply 70October 10, 2025 12:37 PM

Someone please stop the autistic troll. He’s so detached from reality. He’s like one of those people that think everyone has been taken over by an alien pod creature.

Just because your life is a failure and you blame it on autism, it doesn’t mean everyone is autistic.

by Anonymousreply 71October 10, 2025 1:01 PM

On the contrary r70. Das Kapital is a classic autistic infodump.

Additionally, Marx’s plan for communism would only work if everyone was autistic.

R71, no one likes an autistic self-loather.

by Anonymousreply 72October 10, 2025 1:56 PM

R71 my hunch was correct! You are the autistic person whose mother hates him and who is obsessed with Emily Blunt, likely due to the sound of her last name.

Also you were a hardcore Bidenist who shamed and FFed anyone who tried to warn of the impending disaster.

by Anonymousreply 75October 10, 2025 2:36 PM

R73 is the “I Hate Emily Blunt Troll,” also the “I Know What’s Best for David Corenswet and Matt Bomer’s Career Troll.” Mental illness personified.

Cluster B, a borderline, aka, failed narcissist, who hasn’t felt the touch of another since…ever. Bathes only when the neighbors complain. Has accomplished nothing but being a burden to society.

You’re not special, you don’t have autism and autism doesn’t not give you or anyone else superpowers.

You are, unfortunately, exceedingly below average and no fake mental diagnosis will change the fact that you’re a failed human being with no success in life or love. That’s just some people’s lot in life.

I would say donate your time at an animal shelter to make yourself useful but we know what your type does to animals.

Just stay away from living creatures and well all sleep better.

"I need some more money — I do. I need some of these big billionaires, with fucking boats ‘from here to here’ who are fond of telling people they’re billionaires, to come with me and make a movie,” Costner told THR one year ago in Cannes. “I don’t have the money they have, and I’ve already made two of ’em. Where are you rich guys?”

I love this narcissistic quote from the article. Obviously Kevin is stuck in the early 90s. Does he really think some billionaire is going to give him a blank check? Maybe for The Bodyguard 2, but not for a Western. I really don't think we can chalk this up to autism.

by Anonymousreply 82October 10, 2025 7:23 PM

I'll just say that when I first came out or at least acted on my sexuality, KC was my total ideal -- Gary Cooper swagger, all-American ruggedness, and his voice made me swoon. (I'll say it first, MARY!?). But from "No Way Out" to "DWW" he was palpably so undeniably sexy that it was hard to look past that. Though I'm successful in my field I cannot understand how or why people become monsters. I guess I got far by ability but not a ton of ego (thankful for that). Is there anyone here who can explain with first-hand knowledge how Hollywood twists talent and ambition into atrocious personal characteristics?

by Anonymousreply 83October 10, 2025 7:29 PM

I agree about Goodfellas. It should've won Best Picture, it's one of the greatest films of all time. Dances With Wolves didn't deserve Best Picture. And now it's "problematic," as they say.

Costner was a natural movie star. He didn't come across as desperate for audience approval un(like Tom Cruise), and there seemed to be something slightly chilly under all of the charm. He could have starred in the downbeat Westerns that John Ford and Anthony Mann made in the 1950s.

by Anonymousreply 93October 11, 2025 2:46 PM

He needed to leave YELLOWSTONE and do something completely different. A romantic drama (NOT a romcom) with an age-appropriate lead actress would have been good.

by Anonymousreply 94October 11, 2025 6:36 PM

He's a lot like Mel Gibson. Their fame as handsome film leads went right to their heads, and they both bizarrely developed ridiculous Jesus complexes as a result. Their thinking: "I'm more famous and desired than I ever expected, and I think in a way like most people do not... therefore, I must be the Special Chosen One, like Jesus."

Gibson was taken down by his own mental instability, but Costner has so far been able to weather his changes of fortune whenever his Jesus-complex films crash and burn (like WATERWORLD and THE POSTMAN)
