I’m thinking of buying my first house! I’ve rented in NYC for the past 15 years, so I’m looking for something commutable to the city for my job, but with wilderness vibes since I like biking and hiking. Also something that makes sense for a gay couple? Are there upstate NY (or tri-state) towns with a high gay concentration? I don’t need the Hell’s Kitchen of White Plains but also don’t want to be surrounded by children either.
Where should I move in upstate NY?

What exactly comprises a 'wilderness vibe'?

I don't think you want Upstate, unless you want to take the train in from Kingston every day.

Peekskill

How often do you have to go to the office in NYC? What’s your budget?

I had a friend who commuted from Cold Spring and she loved it there. Copake Falls is also nice.

There is no "train from Kingston". There is no commuter train the western side of the Hudson River. The last stop of Metro North is Poughkeepsie. You can take AMTRAK from further north on the Hudson. Look at town from Poughkeepsie down, if you want to "commute" by train. It's that simple. There isa lot of variety between Poughkeepsie and Yonkers. Also consider how far from the train station you wish to live.

Also to the rest of NYState, Poughkeepsie is the beginning of "downstate". So you won't really be in Upstate except to New Yorkers. Beacon to Cold Spring feels a bit "upstate" because you have high hills ("mountains, sort of") and highlands.

The lower Catskills is full of gay male and female couples who bought rundown old homes on large lots cheap in the 1990s. The best buys then were just beyond the 2 1/2 hour drive from NYC.
Can’t imgine what it’s like now. If you like old houses there are plenty in upstate NY as far as the Finger Lake district, which is the most beautiful part of the state in my opinion. I also love Ithaca and the countryside around there. But the higher up you go in the suburbs and more rural communities, the more Republican they are likely to be.

r6 I work 3 days a week in office. My partner has an apartment in Harlem so we’re trying to find a place to go on weekends off the Metro-North. Budget is up in the air but would be cool to find a cheap place to fix up.
Thanks for the rest of the suggestions.

I havent been on the Metro North in years. Does the local still stop at 125th Street?

If you want to find a place on a Metro North line you aren’t looking upstate, you want the lower Hudson Valley. Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties.
