If You Think Some Americans Are Dumb About Our Own Geography...
...you ain't seen nothing yet. This British guy's YouTube channel has been mentioned here before. I happened to catch this video last night when he, his mother and sister look at what some American guy says are his 25 best places to visit in America. At a point in their banter it is revealed that the mother and the sister have no clue that England, Wales and Scotland are 3 different countries. They argue Lewis up and down that Wales and Scotland are just parts of England.
The stupidity starts at the 14:30 mark if you don't want to watch the whole video.

Well, plenty of Americans are indeed stupid, but Scotland and Wales are each in-between “country, sort of, but not a sovereign nation” — they and England are parts of the UK.
Confusion on that point is understandable.

Don't get them started on Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man.

British people are some of the most provincial mouth-breathers in the world. Many of them have barely traveled.

Re Americans: You have to remember that Europe and the USA are about the same size.
Expecting Americans to know all of the 51 Euro countries and their respective capitals is like expecting Europeans to know all of the 50 states/capitals. They don't.
Many Europeans also struggle with Euro geography, just like many Americans struggle with US geography.
However, most Americans know a lot about their own state/capital, just like most Europeans know about their own country/capital.
In short, it's a wash.

I guess people know what they know—until I watched this I did not know that Northern Ireland was considered part of the U.K. but not part of Great Britain. I thought the two names were synonymous.

Apparently, Trump has never been able to grasp the relationships.

That some Brits don't know everything about the geography of the continent is not surprising, especially when you're talking about eastern Europe. But for anyone in England to not know that Wales and Scotland are different countries is staggeringly dumb. Those two think that just because you can drive from England to Scotland or Wales and not have to stop at some border means they're not separate countries is laughable.
The fact that Lewis knows this and they don't is also shocking because he is not a mental giant himself. I've heard things come out of his mouth that make me think he might be a congenital moron.

R5 not to mention, several European countries kept breaking up and/or changing their names throughout the 20th century until the 1990s, so it was hard keeping them all straight.
