I love my Air Fryer

I was always hesitant about cooking fish in my air fryer, but I took a chance tonight. WF had a sale on swordfish. I Googled a recipe, and after ten minutes, it came out perfect in the air fryer. It wasn't dry, but moist and flavorful.

What surprising things have you made with your air fryer?

by Anonymousreply 44September 17, 2025 11:06 PM

Is it just a highfalutin easy bake oven?

by Anonymousreply 1September 17, 2025 3:26 AM

Would love to see your recipe if you feel like sharing it.

by Anonymousreply 2September 17, 2025 3:34 AM

Roasted anything. The baking results of a convection oven.

It reheats like a dream!

It really is just a glorified toaster oven, but the results are always tasty

Same OP! LOVE IT! I couldn't live with my air fryer now. I never use the oven anymore. I just cook everything in the air fryer instead. You can cook almost anything in it. I've got a Tefal air fryer which frys, bakes and steams so I can do veges and everything in it. You can reheat foods like pizza and it comes out delicious. Of all the kitchen appliances I've purchased over the years - the air fryer is the most used (daily) and something I will replace when it needs it. It has vastly improved the quality of my food because everything I put in it comes out yummy. Sometimes I am surprised that something I threw in the air fryer comes out restaurant quality.

No. It absolutely isn't R2.

I do realize that admitting to cooking with an air fryer is dreadfully recherché, n’est-ce pas? Still, one must sometimes sully oneself with the tools of the masses. And yet — unlike the fraus who use theirs for frozen mozzarella sticks — I’ve devised a preparation that would not be out of place in a Venetian palazzo or, indeed, at my table in Back Bay.

[bold]Greg’s recipe for Cod with Prunes and Tomatoes

Ingredients[/bold] -2 thick, fresh cod loins (if you’re using frozen, don’t bother) -1 tin of proper plum tomatoes (San Marzano, or keep walking) - A handful of prunes, pitted and chopped - 2 cloves garlic, lightly smashed - Olive oil — actual olive oil, not something from Costco in a plastic jug - Sea salt and freshly ground pepper - A splash of dry white wine (please, not Barefoot)

[bold]Procedure[/bold] -In a small pan, warm olive oil with garlic until fragrant — imagine you’re in Provence, not Peoria. -Add the tomatoes, simmering until thick. Stir in prunes and wine; the sauce should glisten, not congeal. -Season cod loins. Place them, with dignity, in your air fryer basket. -Spoon the sauce over the fish, then air fry at 400°F for 10–12 minutes until the loins are perfectly opaque. -Plate elegantly — no need for parsley sprigs from a plastic clamshell, thank you.

It’s a revelation: the pedestrian air fryer transformed into an instrument of refinement. Which, come to think of it, is not unlike me.

Not “THE Greg”?

by Anonymousreply 7September 17, 2025 9:12 AM

OMG prunes again!

by Anonymousreply 8September 17, 2025 9:34 AM

Baked chicken thighs, Crispy tofu. Roasted baby potatoes, Brussel sprouts, broccoli crisps with parmesan, Wontons/Gyoza etc etc Endless recipes on u tube and the internet. Reheat meat pies, pizza slices.

Whole Foods.

Next I want to try a steak.

by Anonymousreply 10September 17, 2025 12:21 PM

A friend gave me her Ninja air fryer because she got the newer version with the glass basket. I love it and use it almost every day. Last night, I made a little pizza using an almond flour tortilla as the crust. Last week I made cabbage “steaks”.

by Anonymousreply 11September 17, 2025 3:22 PM

I was an early adopter and gave mine away because no matter how I cleaned it, everything tasted like plastic.

by Anonymousreply 12September 17, 2025 3:57 PM

r1, an Easy Bake Oven works on the same principle as any electric oven only it uses a light bulb instead of a coil.

by Anonymousreply 13September 17, 2025 4:00 PM

I suppose it makes more sense to use an air fryer for a single serving of fish than to heat up a regular size oven to broil or bake it.

by Anonymousreply 14September 17, 2025 4:02 PM

Are they easy to clean? Are they better than an Insta Pot?

I can’t believe there’s people who still don’t have an air fryer. I have two and barely use the oven anymore.

OP you need to try fresh Salmon in the air fryer, I had never been a fan of baked Salmon, but after I got an air fryer I loved the Salmon in it.

I line the air fryer with foil, spray some non stick spray and put a light coating of garlic salt on the Salmon, I just love it, it has become my favorite meal. I have been having it a couple of times per week. Even bought a second air fryer for the garage, to keep the fish smell out of the house.

by Anonymousreply 19September 17, 2025 4:40 PM

Oh should have added I bake it for around 15 minutes at 400 degrees

by Anonymousreply 20September 17, 2025 4:42 PM

They're easy to clean in my opinion. I guess it depends on the kind you have. I won't use mine to cook burgers or something really greasy like some people do. They're a great alternative to oven cooking (or as an "extra oven"). Root veggies turn out fantastic in no time. You have to get to know your own machine as far as what temp/time to use for different things but it is a great, inexpensive kitchen gadget.

by Anonymousreply 21September 17, 2025 4:45 PM

You all sound fat.

by Anonymousreply 22September 17, 2025 4:46 PM

I have the Ninja two basket fryer. It has other features besides air fry - it steams, dehydrates, bakes among other thinks. It's great to be able to cook two different things requiring two different temperatures and times. Great tool.

by Anonymousreply 23September 17, 2025 5:24 PM

I have the Ninja Foodi 5 in 1 Grill/Air Fryer. I stopped using the grill because it takes longer to heat up, and it tends to smoke too much. Also, the smell from grilling lingers in my Townhouse for two days.

by Anonymousreply 24September 17, 2025 5:35 PM

My Frigidaire range has a built-in air fryer.

Nonny Nonny Boo Boo!

by Anonymousreply 25September 17, 2025 5:41 PM

[quote]What surprising things have you made with your air fryer?

Surprising to you or to me?

by Anonymousreply 26September 17, 2025 5:48 PM

I don't think the ovens with the air fryer option "built in" are as good, to be honest. The fact that the smaller ones are smaller and that's the only job they do makes them superior and doesn't heat up the whole kitchen.

Just my opinion. Perhaps someone with personal experience owning both can weigh in, though.

And that is definitely Greg at r6. I knew he wasn't truly gone and was lurking around somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 27September 17, 2025 5:48 PM

I love cooking salmon in my air fryer. Only takes about seven minutes. My partner hates the skin, so we give it to the dog with her dinner, and everyone is happy! Often I will roast baked potatoes before hand, in the same fryer, and let them cool while the fish cooks.

I also cook really yummy chicken legs and thighs, I always use a wax paper insert for easy cleanup.

One thing DL doesn’t need is a reminder of the cod and prunes recipe. Not DL’s finest moment.

by Anonymousreply 28September 17, 2025 5:57 PM

Don't they spew a lot of greasy smoke?

by Anonymousreply 29September 17, 2025 6:30 PM

Breville sells refurbished air fryers on their website and the savings are definitely worth it (that's how I bought my last one)

by Anonymousreply 30September 17, 2025 6:38 PM

r29 that's what my friend says about hers, but I've had mine for close to two years now (and it was used and abused before I had it!) and no, it doesn't spew any greasy smoke or smell at all! It was cleaned before I received it and I did recently clean it after I moved into my new place from my own use during those 2 years, but it's been smoke and smell free (other than regular smell of whatever is cooking) the entire time I've had it. I don't think I have anything "top of the line" either...it's an Iconites, similar to this one (below)...however, again - several years old.

I'm quite happy with it.

by Anonymousreply 32September 17, 2025 6:48 PM

Mine—a Ninja fryer/grill—spews no greasy smoke.

by Anonymousreply 33September 17, 2025 7:28 PM

I like it because I can cook up all my TV dinner appetizers - TGI Fridays potato skins, Totino's Pizza Rolls, Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuits - in minutes, and without heating up the whole kitchen with the oven.

The box says it's a shareable size, and you're supposed to enjoy with your family, but let's get serious.

by Anonymousreply 34September 17, 2025 7:44 PM

I grill mine and get wonderful results without all the cleanup.

But then I'm not a gadgeteer.

by Anonymousreply 35September 17, 2025 8:00 PM

Also, I should also say that it does a great job when I want to bake a small batch of cookies (my own cookie dough, of course).

It's not just for all the shitty appetizer food. as r34's post seems to infer.

by Anonymousreply 36September 17, 2025 8:56 PM

R34’s appetizers sound delicious to me.

by Anonymousreply 37September 17, 2025 9:01 PM

Air fryer is at it's best, I feel, with frozen food - fries, tater tots, appetizers. It's also great for reheating leftover meats - especially baby backs and fried chicken.

by Anonymousreply 38September 17, 2025 10:07 PM

I’m looking at the Cosari brand on Amazon or a Ninja with ceramic coated insides.

by Anonymousreply 39September 17, 2025 10:09 PM

I like to cook my frozen burritos in one. I just spray some foil with cooking spray, wrap it tightly oily side in, and throw it in about 300-325 for however long (usually 40 minutes or so).

by Anonymousreply 40September 17, 2025 10:12 PM

40 minutes seems like a long time for a frozen burrito. Then again, all air fryers are different. Mine requires serious adjustments when it comes to recipes online.

by Anonymousreply 41September 17, 2025 10:35 PM

that is definitely a complaint of mine. It's kind of trial and error (and hope for the best) when it comes to temp to set and time to cook of any particular thing. As I received mine secondhand, I had no guide for it (nor can I find a model # so am unable to look it up).

by Anonymousreply 42September 17, 2025 10:59 PM

I decided to upgrade my air fryer. This one is the bomb dot com.

It's so small...I like mine that has some height to it and you can bake a cake in.
