I just found out my brother was one of the J6 insurrectionists (and was placed on an FBI wanted list for assaulting officers)
None of us have seen him or spoken to him in 10 years. The last time I saw him was late 2015. He's always been the black sheep of the family, politically. I come from a large, VERY liberal, east coast Jewish family. My brother, we'll call him Matt, was an avowed Libertarian--one of those federalist/constitutionalist types. Extremely intelligent and funny, but prone to paranoid thinking and a loner. He always talked about moving to New Hampshire and getting a cabin alone in the woods and "living off the land". Never had many friends or a girlfriend despite being very handsome. We talked about politics that last day I saw him and he told me at the time he was still a Libertarian but thought Trump was a moron, which relieved me.
Anyway, he completely dropped off the map in early 2016--deleted all social media, changed his number, and stopped talking to everyone in my family apart from one other brother (who also seriously distanced himself from us around the same time, though still kept some contact with my parents). That brother (we'll call him Jeff) insisted we shouldn't worry---Matt was fine, he just didn't want to talk to anyone. At one point we discussed getting a private investigator to find him because we were so worried, but Jeff talked my mother down from the idea.
Anyway, this morning our family group text was blowing up and I ignored it because I was in meetings and thought it was just regular political talk about Trump. When I finally got around to looking at them about an hour ago I see it's videos and X/Instagram posts from this site called "sedition hunters" with video stills and wanted posters of Matt from January 6th. They gave him a nickname like "Hitler Kid" and identified him by name. Apparently, he was one of the earliest people to break in through the tunnels and also assaulted officers. He was arrested that day but released on bail and promptly disappeared. According to this site he's been in hiding from police since then. These were posted in November of 2024, but my mother and brother only found them last night.
I'm shaken--in shock but not totally surprised. I'm disgusted and ashamed and livid. My parents are freaking the fuck out. I'm still in shock I think, but I imagine it will fully hit me in a few hours. I can't believe this happened to my brother...that this happened to my family. You read so much about all the families that were destroyed by MAGA and people who were radicalized, but somehow I thought my family was immune.

R2 Yeah, that's what we were trying to tell my mother but she still doesn't quite believe it. Of course, if we get a Democrat back in office in 2028 and a new Justice Dept., they could very well re-assume the prosecutions. I feel like if that happened, I would do anything I could to help them find/arrest him, and my siblings agree. My mother seems to be spiraling into a "not my child!" thing currently, so we're taking about it amongst ourselves.

R14 I think because I don't have anyone else to talk about it with. I'm so ashamed and freaked out. My boyfriend is coming over in a few hours cause we're supposed to go out with some friends and I haven't even told him yet, though I know I have to because I don't think there's any way I can go out and be happy tonight. I kinda wanted to practice saying the story out loud in a way that somewhat makes sense before I drop it on him. I'm afraid of what he'll think about my family once he finds out (he hasn't met any of them yet).
I guess I just needed to get it off my chest somewhat anonymously, and I love you bitches most of the time, so this felt like as good a place as any.

My partner’s brother moved to Idaho to go off grid during the Obama administration. He had a good job in Colorado, and then became a janitor at a school. He posts photos of his guns on Facebook, or at least he did until he unfriended me ten years ago.
It’s weird how children just a few years apart in age can grow up to be so radically different. We wonder, every time there’s an incident, where he is and what he’s up to—if someday we’ll get a phone call from the press.
