Jean Smart is wonderful but this is the reason people hate the Emmys

I remember when they used to award Candace Bergen every year, then Helen Hunt, then Julia Louis-Dreyfuss.

They should have wheeled her out on a toilet...

by Anonymousreply 1September 15, 2025 12:55 AM

After M*A*S*H won for the 14th time I stopped watching.

by Anonymousreply 2September 15, 2025 12:55 AM

I know, OP. Bruce Vilanch used to have a joke that when he was writing, they had to think outside the box because they knew Edie Falco was going to win every other year.

Still, I don’t begrudge Jean this at all. She has had a wonderful career and it’s wonderful to finally see her peak with a long running series. I hate her Broadway venture was a flop.

by Anonymousreply 3September 15, 2025 12:56 AM

Fantastic* not wonderful x 2.

by Anonymousreply 4September 15, 2025 12:57 AM

Jean is lucky to be upright. She can barely walk.

Oscars should be capped at two, or perhaps even one.

Emmys should be capped at between two and four per performer. Or maybe have a rule that last year's nominee is ineligible this year.

Candy Bergen had to DEMAND that they stop nominating her for Murphy Brown, and that was back in an era where a star had more power than they do today. If Jean Smart tried this today, the HBO producers would probably ignore her.

I want to see some love for The White Lotus. I'm picky when it comes to what I will watch on tv and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

by Anonymousreply 7September 15, 2025 1:04 AM

R7 The White Lotus gets shitloads of love, thank you very much.

[quote]Candy Bergen had to DEMAND that they stop nominating her for Murphy Brown, and that was back in an era where a star had more power than they do today.

She didn't have to demand. She just stopped submitting herself to be nominated.

You've always had to apply for a nomination.

Unfortunate example, but Bill Cosby never submitted himself for Best Actor in a Comedy Series in the '80s. Otherwise, he would have won at least once for The Cosby Show.

by Anonymousreply 9September 15, 2025 1:08 AM

R9 Submissions are done in consultation with agents and the producers/network. The suits do most of the work.

by Anonymousreply 10September 15, 2025 1:11 AM

But if the star doesn't want to be nominated, they just say I'm not doing it, R10.

by Anonymousreply 11September 15, 2025 1:16 AM

I could never figure out why John Larroquette was getting one year after year after year.

by Anonymousreply 12September 15, 2025 1:18 AM

If that was Deborah Vance’s dress there would be more bling

by Anonymousreply 13September 15, 2025 1:31 AM

I could watch Jean Smart win every year.

I wish the 'Hacks' writers would create a fabulous guest spot for Delta Burke. I would love to see Delta make a comeback--or at least shine for a few episodes on 'Hacks'--and then win an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress.

by Anonymousreply 14September 15, 2025 2:33 AM

I never knew that about Cosby.

by Anonymousreply 15September 15, 2025 2:46 AM

John Goodman also stopped submitting his name for Roseanne because he wasn't winning and he thought he would be unlikely to win one for the show by that point.

Is Jean going to win every year like Julia did for Veep? I do think it's in better taste to just bow out if you win at least four in a row. I mean, how many trophies does one need for one show?

by Anonymousreply 16September 15, 2025 9:38 PM

If they changed the rules, the historical comparisons of awards would no longer be relevant. What would the Datalounge do if those conversations were eliminated?

by Anonymousreply 17September 15, 2025 9:46 PM

R5 she said she was recovering from a broken knee during her acceptance speech.

by Anonymousreply 18September 15, 2025 9:56 PM

She broke her knee during her acceptance speech?

by Anonymousreply 19September 16, 2025 1:08 AM

"Hacks" is only going to run for five years, which means it only has one year left.

I think it would be great if Jean Smart won next year too so that she could receive the Emmy for each year of the five-year run of the show. She's that good!

by Anonymousreply 20September 16, 2025 3:28 AM

Baldwin withdrew his name too.

by Anonymousreply 21September 16, 2025 11:58 AM

R21 Stephen?

by Anonymousreply 22September 16, 2025 6:26 PM

R22 Billy, of course.
