Scary Bridges

I love water and I'm a good swimmer, but some bridges freak me the fuck out. I wouldn't be able to drive on this one. What are some other scary bridges?

This one used to unnerve me as a young driver. The design gives you sweeping views of the water as you drive across it.

The dual-span Chesapeake Bay Bridge is very scary, and I definitely would not recommend it to anyone who has a fear of heights.

The I-10 High Rise over the Ship Channel in New Orleans would freak me out.

The five-mile long Mackinac Bridge connecting the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan has narrow lanes and open grating (so you can see the water below). High winds make driving precarious and ice can fall from the structure above onto the roadway in winter.

Mackinac Bridge. You can have someone from the bridge staff drive you over

Oh for fuck's sake. Just close your eyes and drive.

I hate heights and steep grades. The Rainbow Bridge in Texas is my literal nightmare. I wake up in a cold sweat dreaming about going up and falling backwards.

The same is true for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Ooooh. I get queasy driving across some bridges. The one that goes waaay up over Tampa Bay has me white knuckled and sweaty, especially since the bridge it replaced was struck by a ship and collapsed. There is a sky high bridge on I-70 somewhere in Colorado or Utah in the mountains that I nearly passed out driving over by myself several years ago. Even some smaller bridges make me antsy, like the Vincent Thomas bridge that connects the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

I drove the Lake Pontchartrain bridge in OP’s video, but did not panic. I think the height of the bridge is what upsets me.

Any unease I feel driving on bridges is 100% due to having seen "The Loves of Isadora" way too young.

The Tacoma Narrows bridge in Washington State creeps me out because of how high it feels. I always keep both hands on the wheel and stare straight ahead when I go across it.

Draw bridges bother me.

When I was a kid, the Silver Bridge over the Ohio Rivers collapsed and killed dozens of people. My dad was a disaster hound and he piled the family into our car and we drove down to see it. Maybe this contributed to my fear of bridges.

r13, I'm sorry that happened to you! I would have needed inpatient care after that.

R13, my great uncle was on the Silver Bridge when it collapsed. He survived but his legs were severely burned when gasoline in the cab of his truck ignited and he was trapped. His driving partner was killed.

Was that the bridge collapse that was preceded by reports of paranormal phenomenon, including sightings of the Mothman?

by Anonymousreply 17September 14, 2025 11:44 PM

Yes, R17. The Silver Bridge is the infamous Mothman bridge.

When the Richard Gere film came out, practically my entire family went to see it.

by Anonymousreply 18September 14, 2025 11:48 PM

Sorry, that should have been paranormal phenomena. When I was young, I read a book called "The Mothman Prophecies" that fascinated and terrified me.

by Anonymousreply 19September 14, 2025 11:54 PM

I walked across this one and barely made it. Then had to walk back again.

It vibrated with every car that crossed.

Why is this bridge still in operation?

On the Lake Ponchartrain bridge last December, during a dense fog advisory, there was a chain of six crashes involving over 40 vehicles which shut down the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge in both directions for around seven hours. Thirty-three people were injured.
