QUADRUPLE threats?!?! Triple threats are acting, singing, and dancing. What’s the fourth talent? Palm reading?
True triple threats are the following. Gwen Verdon Liza Minnelli Chita Rivera Gregory Hines Donna McKechnie Bernadette (she dances well enough) Joel Grey Andre de Shields Anita Morris Debbie Allen Hugh Jackman Sutton Foster (no irony involved). Stokes And oddly enough recently, Antonio Banderas. He can really dance… 😱
And brand new: Jasmine Amy Rogers.
And TONS of chorus and supporting performers who never got their big chance.:. But that’s as it’s always been.
Plus Carol Lawrence. Leland Palmer. So many others..: They both should’ve been a huge stars, but Bway changed.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 14, 2025 5:57 AM |
Tom Holland is a terrific dancer, cute, and not a slouch at singing and acting. Jonathon Bailey is pretty close to the quadruple threat. He's certainly got the looks and acting locked, sings and is a trained dancer and gymnast.

Katie Holmes thinks she’s one. I’ll never forget the Dawson’s Creek episodes where she sings and everyone on the show acts like she’s got this great voice. I remember thinking “are we hearing the same thing?” Later, she appeared on So You Think You Can Dance to perform a special dance in honor of the show’s 100th episode. I had no idea why since she’s never been known as a dancer. And based on her performance it was clear why she never will be.

Yeah I guess that's why George & Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Harry Warren and Irving Berlin trusted her with introducing so many of their hit songs.
Among the many songs she introduced were: They All Laughed, The Continental (Oscar winner), But Not For Me, Embraceable You, Let's Call the Whole Thing Off, A Fine Romance, Pick Yourself Up, Let Yourself Go, We're in the Money and Shuffle Off to Buffalo.

by Anonymous | reply 114 | September 14, 2025 8:49 PM |
Of all the people listed here I see only one-Doris Day. She had the looks, danced, sang where you actually bought her records and could do drama and comedy. Everybody else was only passable in one category enough to get by. Fred Astaire did not have looks. Sinatra was made to look like he was dancing by Gene Kelly. Marylin comes the second closest but nobody would actually buy her records but she was a perfectly acceptable singer. Allyson was no looker. Andrews was a passable dancer. Nobody was going to buy Gene Kelly records.
Cagney though gives the greatest all around performance in a musical. He is an astonishing performer. Maybe the greatest. Orson Welles even said it. Cagney could play to the last row of the second balcony and still keep it within the confines of a screen.

Rogers was fabulous in the 30s. Introduced classic songs and had a body to die for but nobody buys Ginger Roger records. On youtube watch her sing Music Makes Me in a very revealing costume. And the sculptural beauty of her body is simply beyond belief as one can see in Never Gonna Dance and Smoke Gets in Your Eyes both by Jerome Kern where her back and shoulders are revealed.. Both also on youtube. Garland had it all but was truly beautiful in only one or two films. Even by St. Louis the pills and lack of sleep were already taking their toll. And though not a trained dancer she could more than hold her own with Astaire and Kelly.
Hepburn dances wonderfully in Funny Face.
It is amazing that Keeler is a better dancer in her 60s after decades of retirement and playing golf than she was in her 20s. And I saw that Nannette. It was a fabulous party where everybody was charming, warm, talented and fun. And sang Vincent Youman songs.

As for Gene Kelly, I'm ambivalent. He does tick all the boxes, but I'm only a grudging fan. I always found something off-putting about him. He always seemed like he was begging to be liked. I have the same reaction to Jay Leno, who is nowhere near as talented as Kelly was.

Everybody else mentioned except for Day was lacking in one although might have been great in 3 of the four. Groff does not have a major bestselling music career on a major label. Nobody knows who he is outside of Broadway. The only one who might have come close is Elvis if he had more challenging acting roles with better directors. He's sensational dancing in Jailhouse Rock. Looks and singing speak for themselves.

r172, I get it and would never have expected Carol Lawrence to be cast in the film of WSS but I'm surprised she didn't make any New York based films by the likes of Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols and other New York based directors which were plentiful in the 60s and 70s. And while married to Goulet, they must have spent some considerable time in LA for his film and TV career - she might have gotten some of it, too. Oh well, maybe she was a good mother and just didn't want to work while raising their kids.

Doris Day was called "Jutt-butt" by Bob Hope. She really did have that kind of ass.

Cybill Shepherd can sing, dance and act. She’s been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, she’s THAT good.

When I think of a quadruple threat, Cybill Shepherd is THE one.

I worked as her dresser when she did her one-woman show at my college. Her eyes were beautiful.
