I'm 58, and some restaurants allow it at 55, but I've never even asked about it. Do they usually make you show ID to verify you are that age or older?
Eldergays, how frequently do you take advantage of senior discounts?

I do at my local Wendy's. Also at museums and a few other venues that offer them. Plus I got lifetime national park pass while the getting was good a few years back: $20!

I am not even 50 yet and when mother and I go to golden corral or Pizza ranch she asks for the senior discount, and they put both of us on it. I whanna ask "you think I look the same age as this old bitch??"
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 13, 2025 2:10 PM |
Because I don't look my age, I have to ask for it at the AYCE Chinese place (the discount starts at 60 yo). That's the only restaurant where I use it, and I haven't been going there lately because I'm trying to lose 20 lbs.
But it's the same way with my veteran's discount (10% at the Home Depot). They never ask me because I'm a woman, although they asked my BIL (who was with me at the time), who was never in the military. Now that I know about it, I ask for it -- when I remember.

When I mention "I'm with Datalounge" the discount is understood and promptly given.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 13, 2025 2:39 PM |
Happily, they don't actually check IDs for the senior discount at the movies. Well, if I owned one, I'd be happy anyone was showing up at a theater, too. And my sister has fallen in love with Ihop (god save me) so I order off the senior menu when she forces me to go there.
Why isn't there a senior discount at the liquor store?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 13, 2025 2:48 PM |
I order from the 55+ menu at Denny’s. It’s an incredibly good value. So much food that I can never finish and it’s half the price of regular menu items.

I just went to Great Clips to get my hair fixed. The previous cut a few weeks ago had like no blending between the top and sides and it looked ridiculous. Since I just paid for one recently, I was looking at their price board to see the options. I saw there was a senior discount at age 65. I'm not yet 65, so I knew I had to pay full price.
When I paid, I got charged the senior rate, without being asked. It did not feel good.

Which senior benefits start in your mid to late 50s?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 13, 2025 10:40 PM |
I don't take it as an insult. Honestly, when I was a kid I didn't know the difference between 50 and 70. Everyone in those age brackets was just old.
The one time I was taken aback was when I had two not-heavy bags at Trader Joe's, and a cart, and the sweet cashier asked if I needed help carrying them to my car.

I do for trains. It's a discount of up to between 20% to 40% savings. I think the discount card costs €2 for three years, and anything I book using my account details applies the discount to my part of any bookings.
I forgot that there's a discount at cinemas when I saw a film this week and paid full fare of €7.50, it would have been €4 which is the standard in cinemas. Often I forget that there might be an age discount buying tickets to other events and places..

Never asked for a senior discount in a restaurant. But I always buy senior fare train tickets. And movie tickets. And my neighborhood supermarket gives a senior discount on Wednesdays and Thursdays. I won’t ask for it if I’m just buying one or two things but if I’m filling up my basket, yes.

I'm not poor yet and I don't need the charity of retailers and restauranteurs.
However, I have always depended on the kindness of strangers' to pick up my tab.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 14, 2025 12:17 AM |
I never ask for it anywhere but I do use my senior reduced-fare card on the bus. My decades-younger BF always says "One regular and one senior" when we get tickets to the movies. (Bitch!)

"restauranteurs"
Oh dear!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 14, 2025 1:59 AM |
I'm pretty poor but I never even think to ask for it. Most of the time I forget I'm a senior, to be honest. I guess I should start looking for these discounts, but I don't really go anywhere where they have them, since I'm on a budget anyway.
Do they have senior discounts on gas? How ab out at the supermarket?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 14, 2025 1:59 AM |
I forgot. The state where I live offers a senior pass for state parks. 10 bucks for life. I use it to go to the beach and a few places where I "hike" (walk, really).

All the time. Hotels, trains, NYC subway, flights, movies, and on and on and on. One of the perks of being 73…..and there ain’t many.

I get the senior discount for AMC movies. That's about it.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 14, 2025 3:19 AM |
Senior discounts for lodging, how are those? I’m sure by the time I’m old enough they’ll be gone anyway but might be a good tip for others.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 14, 2025 4:47 AM |
What about for cigs and booze?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 14, 2025 3:47 PM |
I have a reduced-fare transit pass (50% off), get a senior discount off pre-paid passes to Landmark Theaters and get 10% off on Amtrak and at the MMJ dispensary. Annually there’s a $1000-plus rebate on state income taxes through a “Senior Circuit Breaker” provision limiting property taxes to a percentage of your taxable AGI. I’ve found most home-repair providers will knock something off if you ask, too. A new garage door opener was $800 this summer. $80 off didn’t hurt. The same with plumbers and electricians. Do I need it? No. Will I take it? Of course.
Years ago we were asked if we wanted the “Senior Concession” buying tickets for the London Eye. We were in our 50’s, so I guess we qualified, but it’s not a term we use in the US. I must have sounded either unsure of what it entailed or like an American when I said “uh, yeah, sure” or something because the woman selling the tickets said I’d save enough to buy a cup of tea.

Not yet. 58 and in total denial!
I'll probably start doing that after 60.

R25 Thank goodness you made sure to add that you don't need it.
