He was murdered by his own target demographic: a straight, white, 22-year-old, college-educated kid from the West with Republican parents.

That profile makes sense because outside of that bubble, nobody really cared. Over the past few days, so many people had to Google who Charlie Kirk was. Even those who recognized his name or a viral clip barely scratched the surface of what he actually said.

The “demonic liberal monster” the right has been screaming about wasn’t an outsider. It was one of their own kids. He was close to home. He was their sons. Outside of Trump, MAGA’s reach isn’t that big, which is exactly why it will collapse without him.

To continue, watching this unfold has made me think about white American culture and how often it latches onto subcultures and fringe groups. For many, “white American” feels like such a thin identity that it creates a hunger for scenes to belong to: beatniks, hippies, punks, goths, MAGA, “queer,” Christian nationalists. The lack of rooted cultural identity makes the white middle class especially vulnerable to cults in the U.S.

You don’t see this pattern as strongly in Hispanic/Latino, Black, or Asian communities or in heavily immigrant European communities on the East Coast. I don’t know many MAGA Greeks or Portuguese girls shaving their heads and declaring themselves non-binary. Their ethnic identities give them a foundation. They don’t have to chase after one.

That’s the problem with America we never really talk about.

R17 it’s an interesting question and one that I have thought about as a black American a lot. Human beings are social animals and need to feel like they belong somewhere, have a sense of community. When you are the majority, where do you find your sense of community? And for young white Americans they can’t celebrate being white, like I can celebrate being black without it being rife with controversy. They can’t celebrate being American like I can without it sounding jingoistic and supremacist. Explaining someone’s privilege to them is like explaining water to a fish. Yes you can intellectually grasp it, but if you don’t feel it in your personal life, it doesn’t much matter - especially when you get to see others celebrating their identities. And truth be told, it stings more when you’re told who you are is bad and you have to carry the weight of the evils of the past. You can call it the “Sins of the father” but there will always be a revolt when people no longer want to carry that mantle. This leaves kids like Tyler vulnerable and ripe for the picking - this unfulfilled need to culturally belong somewhere.

That’s why I find gay white American males interesting. They are one of the few sets of white Americans who understand what being a minority in this country feels like. And some of the few white American males who can proudly claim and celebrate an identity, their community.

Oddly enough, oppression gives identity, community. That’s why people like Charlie Kirk need to paint themselves as victims of a society that’s trying to erase them to gather a following - even though they are a majority with the laws of the land stacked in their favor.

Other conservative media personalities usually just share their own side. How could Charlie Kirk argue DEI at R25 and NOT know the largest benefactor of DEI by far is White Women. When you go down the list of all the people DEI is designed to help, black people are actually at the bottom of the list behind asian, disabled, military personnel, etc...

The United States of America was built on land stolen from one group of people through genoicde and built by another group of people through forced labor. When it comes to slavery, it is VERY easy for obvious reasons, to paint this as a white vs. black thing. That is what Jillian Michaels was doing recently by diminishing the effects of slavery by saying there were white people fighting against it. But is is not White vs. Black. The problem with slavery that we still deal with today lays squarely at the feet of the United States government and their inability to acknowledge (not even apologize for) for a governmentally regulated system that enslaved millions of Americans for 100 years after the country's inception. I think a somewhat official apology came under the Biden administration to no fanfare. That is how long it took. This is tantamount to an abusive father who beat his kids growing up showing up to Thanksgiving dinner and expecting all to be forgiven without acknowledging the damage that he has cost.

We have ALL paid for this mistake, black and white. Slavery is not just something that happened to black people. The affects of it have damaged all Americans, and is a stain on our country - that is how it should be viewed. White people pay the price for it now as well. Our government failed us in this area and left us to our own devices to fight it out on our own - to make sense of the repercussions on our own. There was a split second after slavery during Reconstruction when the dangerous proposition of poor black and poor whites coming together was taking root but that was immediately stopped with the institutionalization of Jim Crow and the rise of the KKK, turning us once again against each other. So it was very intentional. And here we are today facing the exact same issues. And we will continue to face the exact same issues because of unaddressed trauma.

And to be 100% honest, I don't even begin to know how you address it now. I have no clue.

The kid was extremely bright with a 4.0 GPA. Imagine being that bright in a MAGA family where you are handled a gun before the age of ten and your dad is a preacher/cop. I'm a white American with no particular cultural or ethnic identity and I've had a really good and fulfilling life in large part thanks to, yes, the unique cultural privilege white Americans have to define themselves without others forcing definitions on them. A radicalized person is a radicalized person, be they radicalized to the left or right. But a person who is indoctrinated into "gun culture" and told guns are the answer for everything from the time they can walk, will immediately reach for their gun to "defend" their new found beliefs. As noted above, Gov Cox of Utah spoke thoughtful, balanced words to the public ... and then he got a phone call directly from Trump leaning hard on him to take the Trump point of view that it's all out war against the so-called "Radical Left." There is so much pressure being put on key people to warp the narrative to obey Trump/MAGA, to build a narrative of war against "the left", and that's if the key people themselves are not already willing and eager to help build that narrative.

When you watch a movie or a TV show, you switch to a mode called suspension of disbelief. Right now, when it comes to all those tidbits of information spread by the WH, the FBI, the GOP, the MAGA echo chamber, I've switched to the reverse mode: total suspension of belief. I will not believe anything at all that comes from their mouthes. Which means the only thing I've established so far is that Tyler Robinson was sharing a house with a roommate, period.

In the meantime I enjoy watching all the Kash Patel's pictures and videos with his deer in the headlight eyes: the guys looks like he's had a terrifying bad trip years ago and he keeps trying to snap himself out of the constant onslaught of flashbacks. HPPD is a bitch.

I have spent the last 3 days painfully sitting through Charlie Kirk debates. Here are my conclusions:

He was a political grifter pandering to his MAGA base for personal and monetary gain.

He purposely chose divisive topics to maintain relavence.

His videos were manipulated, only showing arguments where Kirk was succesful

When facing actual intellectuals or prepared students, Kirk's arguments were repeatedly crushed, exposing Kirk for the uneducated buffoon that he was.

Kirk was highly succesful against random, unprepared, and often emotional university students, who often didn't have any debating experience, or the media experience he had.

Kirk was a predatory oppurtunist who prioritized entertainment value over genuine intellectual value.

Kirk operated as a sophisticated political grifter who successfully monetized cultural resentment and political division.

His dramatic personal enrichment, calculated message evolution, strategic provocation, and opportunistic positioning all point to someone who prioritized personal gain over genuine conviction

His ability to extract millions from donors while living in luxury estates represents a classic grifter model - exploiting the genuine concerns and grievances of his audience for personal enrichment while offering them little substantive improvement to their actual circumstances.

I had never heard of this guy until he was shot. The reactions by medical professionals and teachers online have been chilling. Does no one else, on this board in particular, worry about a slippery slope where it becomes publicly acceptable to kill or harm someone over words or perceived ideology? If I’m wearing a polo and khaki shorts and am in an accident, will medical professionals, many celebrating this on socials, perceive me as MAGA rather than a lifelong Dem? Will they then celebrate my being critically injured? What if they are Muslim and anti-gay, will I get good care? Social media has normalized some very dark and dangerous behavior, even if it falls short of shooting.

A few people chose to memorialise Charlie Kirk but the march had nothing to do with him. His murder was just fuel-to-the-fire for some of them.

Same as the protests in Melbourne, R286 - general anti-you-name-it (but primarily anti-immigration) within which a few participants decided to have their little Kirk moment.

As I've said elsewhere, nobody in that protest would have been aware of Kirk same time last week. I try to keep across the USA political sphere but had never heard of him, nor had anybody I know with whom I've since discussed this.

I despise the gatekeeping that people do with information in these cases. For example, it has been stated that the family has stated that Tyler became very political in recent years. However, it hasn’t been released what his politics are. You have all of this needless and divisive wrangling across the country of people trying to figure it out. The family knows exactly, the authorities no doubt know. They could take two minutes and put it to rest with the public.

Governor Cox just says it was leftist ideology, but doesn’t say the specifics. This is so wrong by everyone involved, including friends of the killer. Even if the police tell people not to talk, they should do it anyway for the good of the country.

If there was any substantive evidence other than that the disturbed gunman was now, at least, a man of the left, outraged by Kirk's hostile rhetoric against marginalized populations, MS NOW would be carpetbagging its coverage with such news. My grandfather was a farmer for 55 years.

More, if you count his boyhood. So his brain speaks for itself. Never mind drought or insects—he made things grow, and grow well. Strangers tell me his peaches, corn, and tomatoes were the best they ever had. And he always outran the bank. But Pops never made it past high school. He was insecure about it. He respected books, but had no time to read. He wasn’t encouraged as a kid, either. The farm needs hands. When your life is laying irrigation pipe and spraying pesticides before dawn, TV is a vacation.

In the forties he went to boarding school for a while, even military school. So he knew the wider world. But I’m the only person in his family to go to college. I grew up on the farm, but it wasn’t for me. (Don’t ask me about tractor engines.) Even so, I respected the work and did my best to help out. Pops and I were bridges and counterweights for each other. So we always had a good time at lunch.

I forget how it came up, but one day at a diner—I was over 30—he said he wished I had religion. I was surprised because he wasn’t pious. He liked his church, donated pumpkins to their fall festival, but he didn’t attend regularly and never discussed it. Both my grandparents felt God is nobody’s business. Their children are agnostics at best, but he knew I’m an atheist. He gently said it bothered him.

He had plenty of doubts. He knew that religion—any religion—doesn’t make sense. He hated lectures, and acknowledged life is stressful enough without sweating over sin. But he’d witnessed two so-called miracles—the sudden disappearance of his mother’s cancer, and my recovery, aged 22 months, from a burst appendix. This gave him hope, and drove him to look twice at the Bible. Even if you don’t believe every word, he said, it’s full of good advice.

True, I said. The Jesuits made me learn my Bible. Life is brutal and short; solace is expensive. You take it as it comes, try not to hurt others. I think of Matthew 6—when thou doest thine alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth—all the time. But to me it’s only a reminder.

I told Pops we’re both free. You walk a line for a reward. I do it for its own sake. Maybe the Bible reminds me of that, maybe it doesn’t. But I feel the same pressure as you. Because one day the lights will go out.

He never thought of it this way. He understood it, even if he didn’t agree. Then we changed the subject.

He’d hate that Charlie Kirk made me think of this.

Pops was a Republican who hated Trump, Kirk, and all they stand for. My uncles disagreed; they had terrible arguments over it. I’m fairly sure he wondered where he went wrong. He died in 2019. But as I watched Kirk’s murder last week, I wondered how Pops would react.

Because I felt almost nothing.

As blood spurted from Kirk’s neck I felt no more than if I witnessed a bank robber shot in the street. Stunned, sickened at our national gun fetish, afraid for the future. But resigned. Live by the sword . . .

Because that’s what Kirk did. He wasn’t the street preacher of Ezra Klein’s fantasy. He didn’t (as Sally Jenkins has it) ‘grow’ or ‘learn.’ During his 13 years in public life he was remarkably consistent, a committed racist, misogynist, homophobe, and transphobe, a Christian nationalist who demonized immigrants. An architect of January 6th, he pled the Fifth on his role in it. Generally he opposed every civil right won in the last century. His neverending college tour—which centrists drool for like Firing Line and Aristotle—was a cheap social media content farm, a wrestler enticing hacks then bodyslamming them. That doesn’t mean he deserved to die. To my knowledge Kirk never advocated violence—he said ‘listening’ was necessary to prevent it. But in practice that meant us listening to him.  It lurked behind everything he said—Do as you’re told and nobody gets hurt. I’m not shocked he died a criminal’s death, shot, apparently, by the sort of young, nihilistic bully that he thought ripe for the picking.

So I don’t celebrate his murder. It’s like watching fire ants attack: sudden, brutal, senseless. But they’re not on me—not yet.

I’m sorry for his children, who are innocent. (This is more courtesy than Kirk extended to Gazans.) But I’m cold to his wife and friends, who promise to continue his ‘work’ ten times over.

So I think of Pops again, wishing I had a moral beacon. The state of the world worried and depressed him. He didn’t see an easy way out. Maybe he thought I needed armor.

Maybe he had a point.

Hardly Christian, if you go by the Hallmark® New Testament. But if we remember Jesus condemning the Pharisees, or cleansing the Temple, it seems Arendt identified Jesus’s strength as a man and politician.

The priests and moneylenders were working for a living—Sally Jenkins might wish Jesus heard them out. But they were enemies of peace, love, and humanity. He had a mission, and backed it up. At the Temple he even committed the crime that modern life often holds above murder—property damage. Jesus taught that empathy is the root of love, without which we’re doomed. His practice was astonishing, but not boundless. As Arendt says, Jesus kept, thought, and acted in his own identity, even when he faced risk. Depending on perspective you can ignore it; count it among his human flaws; or call it the realistic choice of a politically conscious rabbi.

And me?

I believe in human dignity. I’m willing to say so—and fight for it—up to the edge of my own.

Since Trump’s return, well-meaning people often remind each other ‘Don’t let them take your humanity.’ We all need that; it’s frighteningly easy to become the monster at the door. But it’s also a warning not to sacrifice yourself, bury your head, acquiesce—to remember who you are, don’t offer hands to those who’ll kill you.

Because even if he never said so, that’s what Kirk wanted. To destroy you, me, everyone who doesn’t look, think, or act like he did. Whoever devotes their life to making a country smaller and ‘purer’ will in their dreams—at least—stop at nothing to achieve it.

That’s why I can’t mourn him. The Bible is empathetic to human frailty, but it hates evil. It promises redemption in death only for credit in life.

Pops had it. For all his exhaustion, living by his wits, he had quiet, dignified, lifelong charity. He also—as many farmers do—slept with a loaded revolver.

He knew that a lonely farmhouse attracts bandits. He never used the gun, but he was prepared.

He was on God’s side.

His conservative coworkers said he shied away from talking politics with them, a groyper still has much in common with regular MAGAs, he was also heard ranting about Trump and Kirk. Family member said that he ranted about Kirk spreading hate, high school friend said he was a leftist. The groyper idea seems to come from some armchair internet experts who've made lame attempts to connect the messages on the bullets to groypers. A groyper would've written "Catch, Jew" not "Catch, Fascist". This killing seems like a manifestation of the left's waning power "If we can't cancel you anymore then we'll just kill you".

Yesterday, FBI Director Kash Patel said in an interview that Robinson “subscribed to left-wing ideology,” citing his family’s remarks to investigators. But those close to Robinson say there was a lot his family didn’t know about him.

Once it was reported that Robinson's family considered his views toward Kirk ugly and hateful, there were only two logical possibilities: he was either (very) far-left or a groyper. Fuentes himself knew that was true and was obviously worried about it. It wasn't absurd or grasping at straws to entertain the possibility of the latter, as some now contend (even within this thread).

Something that's very clear currently is that a large segment of Americans don't understand young people, especially those who are terminally online, as well as they should. There was also a lot of early conjecture predicated on false beliefs ranging from 'no liberal could have those sniper skills' to 'no groyper would have a trans friend/possible partner.' It's not always as simple as that.

R475 My point to R467 was to do a cost benefit analysis of his own situation and know what risks he can afford to take and if they are worth it for this particular cause.

Contributing to the defense of a cold-blooded asshole murderer would not be at the top of my list to risk my job for. For others, maybe it is.

Each person should follow their own conscience.

Keep in mind that Tyler Robinson thought what he planned to do was a great idea, at least up until he was identified and forced to surrender to police and is now facing life in prison and possibly execution by the state of Utah. My guess is he regrets his choice now.

Thinking things through and making informed decisions can save a person and their loved ones a lot of grief.

A lot of you seem to be forgetting that this guy was Mormon until about 5 minutes ago, born and raised. Watch some of the documentaries on these kids on Youtube. They're so buttoned up-- literally-- and they DO have a very formal, mature way of speaking. Robinson may have been constantly online for the past few years, but that wouldn't negate everything that had gone before.

Also, as far as the FBI "making up" the texts, you do realize that the FBI isn't just the few people at the top appointed by Donald Trump, right? We are talking about agents who have been there through the last 3, 4, 5 presidents. These people aren't just going to throw away their reputations and the careers they've built over decades because Donald Trump "hates the trans". It doesn't work that way.

For the very first time EVER - I agree with Bannon and Owens (R472 & R473). Something doesn't smell right with these text messages. Something seems very off. As we all know - Trump and the entire Trump administration operate by making up lies and repeating them over and over until they become truth and embedding the lies with spin and gaslighting. They have no issue with manufacturing "truth" to suit their agenda. They have no issue with everyone knowing they are lying. The FBI is heavily compromised and is no longer a credible government authority and is loyal only to Trump and the Trump administration.

If the shooter or the roommate confirm verbally in interview, which we can all see, or via their legal representation, that the text messages are real then I will be immediately convinced. Until then - this is just made up garbage to support their coming war on the left.

Something which really worries me - if the texts ARE real then this is the worst outcome for us gays that I can think of. They will come for us hardcore. Not just the transes, We all knew they would eventually come for us gays but here is the actual catalyst for it. I'm [bold]really[/bold] worried.
