Is BritBox worth $9 a month or $90 for the year?
Would you sign up for it? Or do you get it as part of another streaming package and you couldn't live without it?
Going into fall/winter, I want to make sure I have plenty of interesting entertainment at the ready to keep me from falling into some OTHER bad habits.
Also, if you have it, what shows do you recommend, past or present? I've never had it before, so chances are high that I've seen none of what is being offered on BB.

Also interested in this, as well as any comparisons to Acorn TV.

I think so. I bought it about three months ago and have been watching “inside no 9” and I love it.

Love it. Would give up HBO, Hulu, Apple TV before Britbox. Acorn is also great, but 2nd in quality programming to Britbox.

I have it because I enjoy British murder mysteries.
The app is not the best and it’s sometimes hard to navigate, but if you want access to comedy, drama or mysteries from the UK, I don’t think you can beat it.
Acorn has a lot of junk on there. Cheap junk. Britbox Originals can fall into that category too but the old stuff makes up for it. I renew Acorn once a year to watch Dalgliesh.
I love the Agatha Christie collection. The Joan Hickson Miss Marple is a favorite. Absolutely Fabulous, The Vicar of Dibley, Luther, Happy Valley, Wallander, QI and Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes are worth the monthly subscription.

Totally worth it; Brit actors are classically trained, so generally the entire cast of a show or series is brilliant.

Yes to the first, no to the second.
You can see everything worth watching in much less than a year, and then cancel.
Like I did.

In my opinion, yes. I also have Acorn. I watch Britbox and Acorn shows more frequently than any other streaming service (I have Netflix, LMC, and HBO/Max too).

Get it through Prime Video - it works better with the Amazon apps.
More shows worth watching: Blue Lights, Scott & Bailey, Karen Pirie

I’ve noticed some good sales in the past around Black Friday. I am always tempted to, but I usually get a month or two every once in a while, and then cancel.

I like it. Archie, the 4 episode show about Cary Grant, was very good. I was disappointed in the show about the Mittford sisters.

I have it. It’s probably not really worth it for me but I can’t seem to bring myself to cancel it. I get it through Amazon Prime.
I do really like the Death In Paradise series.

I have Britbox through Prime, and the price is going up to $10.99/mo. next month.
[quote]We're writing to let you know that on October 2, 2025, the monthly subscription price for BritBox is increasing to $10.99/month. Starting with your first billing date following October 2, 2025, your subscription will automatically renew at the new price unless canceled. If you are on a promotional offer, you will continue to be billed at your current promotional price for the rest of your promotional period, then $10.99/month after.

I wondered the same, OP. I remember when Netflix used to show a lot of British mystery/detective shows.

How is it $90 for the year if the month is only $9? Ten months? Do they have metric calendars in the UK, OP?

Same here. I got it last month and we've watched almost nothing else since.

r14 I'm in the US - and the Facebook ad (which spawned this post) offered the option of $8.99 per month OR $89.99 for the year (if you pay upfront).

I got the same offer through email.

It’s worth it for Gardener’s World alone. Monty Don is my spirit animal.

r17 I wish I had received it through email, because now the offer on my feed disappeared (as things do after a certain period of time).

I wished they’d called it Brit Hamper like those fabulous Christmas baskets from Harrods.

Seriously? You've never seen subscriptions that offer a discount for paying annually instead of monthly?

It’s worth it me but I love foreign tv shows. I currently have subscriptions to BritBox, AcornTV, PBS and MHZ.

R23 is like me - I have the same subscriptions. Still trying to find a way to stream Viaplay here in Canada. Britbox introduced me to some really great shows from the UK and Ireland. Right now, I'm watching "Dublin Murders" and wondering why the fuck nobody had told me about this show earlier.

I have Acorn, Britbox, HBOMax, AppleTV+, Hulu, Peacock, Disney, Prime, YouTubeTV, Netflix, Paramount+. I hardly ever watch any of them.

R24 Dublin Murders is so good! I have one more ep to go - been saving it for when I can really settle in to indulge as life has been busy this week. The new Lynley on Britbox is good too. I also enjoyed Art Detectives on Acorn, the first season of which I just finished.

The offer might be available on their website, OP, I would check.
Maybe it’s time to cull your streaming budget, r25?

I watched the first two episodes of Dublin Murders last night, I love it!
I’m also watching a Canadian series on MHZ called Something Undone, so far it’s really good. Creepy.

i've never heard of MHZ before. Or Acorn.

R21 - not yet. We watched the old Lynley series, though, and enjoyed it. We just got BritBox a few weeks ago.

Is The Graham Norton Show on Britbox? I would subscribe just for that. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Dublin Murders is based on a couple of books by Tana French that I really enjoyed. Looking forward to watching that.

The Detectorists was a great show I watched during the pandemic, it’s on Acorn. It was different, and sweet.
