People actually do successfully use firearms to protect themselves, but the amount of success is probably negligible compared to the perception/assumption of how broadly firearms can successfully can be used for protection. But, like so many other things, it's simply peace of mind, and once it's established and the person feels unprotected without X or Y, their minds just aren't going to change. We all know firearms are used much more to shoot people who are known to the gun owners than fend off random attackers. The idea that a person could foresee any attack and prevent it with his or her firearm is ridiculous. But, again, firearms are sometimes successfully used for protection, so the thinking is "why not -- it might not always help, but it certainly can't hurt and at least there's a small chance my gun will save me."

I haven't caught up with this entire thread, but the number of children who die accidental gun deaths every year, far outnumbers any intruder shootings. The pro-life party considers children to be collateral damage. It's beyond comprehension.
