Even when they were raised relatively liberal. And this applies to all races in American culture. An uncomfortable is not the same as homophobia. What gives. Rich and upper middle class folks experience the same culture of heteronormativity. Why are they so much more comfortable around gays or even people thinking the they are gay when they’re not.
Why are poor people more likely to be uncomfortable with homosexuality

Because they're busy getting by and raising kids, they can't be bothered with The Other. Rich people have the disposable time and income to read, travel, meet people from different walks of life... basically to faff about, which eventually results in being "worldly".

Maybe you are confusing cause and effect.
Maybe they are poor because they are the type of moron to be homophobic.

It’s all about exposure, OP.
R1 is correct, although one doesn’t need to be wealthy to travel, having consistent exposure to different cultures really makes a difference.
I think it’s critical to get that sort of exposure in one’s formative years, all the way to becoming a young adult. It allows one to pursue curiosity, & one is really open to forming new friendships when one is still young enough to do so, without having been shaped into a person who fears anything and anyone who isn’t just like them.

Ignorant obsession with stupid religous beliefs.

Any proof that OP's proposal that poor liberals are more likely to be homophobic than rich liberals? I call BULLSHIT.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 10, 2025 3:06 PM |
Poor people are also more likely to be religious, to be less-educated, and to travel less.
These three factors play some role in their worldview being what it is.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 10, 2025 3:08 PM |
It has nothing to do with being poor. As others have said, it has to do with what you're exposed to. I suppose it's true that rich people have more opportunities to be exposed to how other people live than poor people do.
The same thing applies to whether you're uncomfortable with people from other countries, or Jews or Muslims, or any number of things. If you have no personal experience with it, you're likely to be hostile to it. This is why diversity programs are so important and why conservatives are so opposed to them.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 10, 2025 3:17 PM |
Because poor people are more often than not poorly educated and untraveled.
As Mark Twain said, "travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness".

Nor mine R112 . I grew up in a lower class redneck area and I popped out of my mother Miss Thinging my ass off and never really caught any hate for it. In fact when I hit puberty and started doing my thing I had my choice of neighbor boys to have sex with. In fact,I was so 'active' it turned into a scandal and my parents moved ! There was a huge bush behind our garage that was so big you could walk around upright in it. Thats where Id entertain my callers. I'll never forget this one day when I was particularly in demand that there was a line ! I shit you not . We were all 12-13-14 or so . I did used to wonder how word spread so fast when it did but I wasnt complaining.

Religion as someone said above. Poor people are more likely to cling to religion or a belief in God to get them out of the many horrible jams that find themselves in. Religion as it is usually preached is ant-homosexual.

historically poor people were and are less judgmental about slightly deviate sex practices.

A rich person has been taught to, in the moment, keep it to himself or herself, or "among themselves," and has a greater likelihood of appreciating the gay arts (fashion, hair, interiors, florists) without any moral quandary.

You guys are rewriting history. Rich people set the baseline for what is "moral" in any society. Sometimes the clergy gets a little out of hand and goes rogue, but on the balance, morality is determined by the wealthy.

Why are rural people more homophobic? Why are Southerners more homophobic? Why are people from Midwest more homophobic?
In most cases, it boils down to either exposure or Jesus.
I personally believe that most people are homophobic in some way, but some just tolerate it better than others.

Lower class = lower IQ. Unable to reason in abstract ways. Lack of understanding/flexibility/empathy. Fearfully clinging to popular notions of things- and seeing everything in B+W (or at the very least, primary colors): mom, apple pie, flag, Jesus, America, eagle, support our troops.

Ok R19 I'll try but Im no Hemingway ! I dont want some grammar queen "Oh dearing " me for my sentence structure or not conjugating my verbs ! You have to remember that was 1971-74 . In a conservative small city 20 years behind the rest of the world. Girls werent sluts yet and most boys didnt look like a young Brad Pitt . Yet they were hitting puberty and we all remember what that was like. There I ws,olive skinned with green eyes and shoulder length brown hair and very pretty (I played Mary in our boy scout troops Nativity play ! I was that femme ) and I had 'experimented when I was 11 and knew without a doubt I wanted that the rest of my life. So I started looking for it. There were a lot of boys my age in our neighborhood and I knew all of them having gone to school, scouts etc with them. Also at the time sex was hitting the mainstream as the decadent 70s set in. So the air was fraught with sex !
The Happy Hooker was my guide book ! Thanks to Xaviera I learned very quickly how to let a guy know you are available and willing and would be oh so discreet . I started with my brothers best friend and went from there. So many times it'd go just like this..."Hey man what ya doin" and the next sentence would be "later" . It really wasnt discussed that much. There was a sort of tactical understanding . They were there to get off,and I was there to get them off. More than once one would walk into the bush, pull it out,Id blow them and theyd zip up and leave . Never saying a word. It was 90% oral but there were more than a few that fucked me too. I loved every second of it. I loved the chase,I loved sealing the deal,I loved watching them pull it out,I loved the taste ,I could go on and on . I think they realized that about me too and that made it less 'nasty' that I was one of those queer boys.
When I was 13 the neighbor next door was the 1st grown man to really fuck me (1st hands free orgasm for me) . I realized I far preferred grown man dick at that point but thats another story ! Absolutely they all knew each other were doing, but in a weird way the fact they all were doing it made it less of a "thing" . Now when I say I had a line I should specify it was 3 other guys and the one I was with when they walked up. Oh it was raining too. That bush was like a fortress ,nice and dry under it. Oh the many happy hours I spent in there.
