Oh for fucks sale, the goddamn video is 80 seconds long.
She got in an elevator with a couple of cunts who realized who she was and started mocking “that tv show with the kids in overalls and bare feet.” She wouldn’t mention their names on the recording, but said she will mention it in her memoir. She promised to tell that queen Steve Kmetko off the record.
She’s 86, so she probably will take it to her grave, so we need to guess.

While many of these are humorous, I really do want to know their identities. They must have been old enough to remember the show, but also be younger enough than Learned to be Hollywood brats. If she is going to break DL rules and not name names she needs to give us clues, however vague.
In Joan Fontaine's autobiography, "No Bed of Roses," she relates the story of a huge Hollywood star who entered an elevator with Joan and proceeded to pee in the corner. Joan wrote *just* enough so that you KNEW it was Ava Gardner. That's how you do it!

by Anonymous | reply 99 | September 10, 2025 1:30 PM |
this recollection is not something I would expect from Michael Learned in a Steve Kmetko podcast!
my impression is that it was early in the show's run, which would make it circa '74?
her knowing laugh about how it still bothered her years later was very endearing. , she had a significant stage career prior to the Waltons... I guess nothing prepares you to get broadsided like that .
I hope she carries one of her four Emmys in a handbag should it happen again..
by Anonymous | reply 100 | September 10, 2025 1:38 PM |
Well, R97, what does anyone do with any bit of knowledge they have? Use it, store it, relate it, forget it. There is no discernible end to information (for most of us). It's not like I'll forget my Social Security number if I learn their identities.

Hard to believe any two well-known actresses would have intentionally tried to humiliate Ms. Learned in this fashion. Maybe they were just trying to be funny in that they immediately recognized who she was so they started talking about THE WALTONS while pretending not to recognize her. I guess it depends on exactly what they said about the show. If they outright insulted it, then of course, that would have been horribly disrespectful and childish bullying.

R119, Steve flys in from Chicago every two or three months and tapes five or six interviews in one day, in a cheap studio in North Hollywood. I know someone who did one. When they arrived, they discovered their interview was bumped to later in the day; they sat in a green room for hours. By the time they finally got on set, SK was exhausted, seemed slightly disinterested, and got several facts wrong (by that time, my friend was in no mood to correct him).
I know Steve slightly. Lovely guy, has been sober for years (have friends who know him from AA meetings in Chicago), but since he’s been gone from Hollywood for almost 20 years, his style of Tinseltown puff piecery no longer exists (imagine Rona Barrett or Barbara Howar using their softball interview style these days). He’s a little desperate to get back into the game after his firing (one episode is Steve being interviewed by Amy Yasbeck about his life), when he moved back to Chicago to tend to his ailing parents. Again, a very sweet guy, but needs someone better prepping him so he doesn’t come off as fawning and deferential to Chad Lowe and Jill Whelan (although Jill’s episode is one of his best, because Vicki Stubing pours the TEA!)

by Anonymous | reply 155 | September 11, 2025 6:50 PM |
Like R152, I've seen Learned on stage. She's an excellent actor.
What's always been such a shame about her career is that the bottom just completely fell out of it after the cancellation of Nurse, which she won her final Emmy for. Going from The Waltons and winning or constantly being nominated for some of the top awards in your profession (8 Emmy noms with 4 wins, 4 Golden Globe noms), being on the cover of major magazines, to doing stock and regional theatre and middling Broadway roles (she even did replacement work) must have been quite the wakeup call.
Yes, she was an older woman by that point, but there was no Murder She Wrote or Golden Girls in her future, or a dramatic Judging Amy or Brothers and Sisters. No mini-career in a string of made for tv movies, like Meredith Baxter-Lesbian, Markie Post, Nancy McKeon or the Charlie's Angels ladies. The Broadway work didn't go anywhere that she was originating roles in a high-profile new play or anchoring a big revival in something that would have won her a Tony.
While there are still plenty of Waltons fans, she's nowhere near as recognized or beloved as some of the tv ladies from around that same era.
The recent Dahmer show, where she's excellent as usual, reminded people she's still working but didn't result in a nomination despite some campaigning, and there's been no follow up.

R156 I completely agree with you.... and to end up in Living Dolls!
Living Dolls began as a back-door pilot on Who's the Boss? that aired in March 1989. In the backdoor pilot, Vivica A. Fox portrayed Emily and Jonathan Ward portrayed Rick. Executives disliked the original cast, and held auditions for recasting when the pilot was picked up to series in May.[2] Halle Berry replaced Fox in the series, while David Moscow was cast to replace Ward. The backdoor pilot was reaired in September as an episode of Living Dolls.[3]
In a later interview, Michael Learned recalled writers were inconsistent in writing her character, saying "I was told that she was supposed to be... kind of a tough cookie, and so that's what I understood was what they wanted in my character, when in truth what they wanted was Charlotte Rae in Facts of Life.[4] Learned also felt that producers were planning to replace her with Marion Ross, who guest starred in the final two episodes.[4] During the filming of one episode, Berry collapsed on the set and went into a coma; she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes shortly thereafter.[4][5]
Upon its debut, the series was panned by critics and received mostly negative reviews.[2] It was the only series to receive an "F" grade by People magazine in its 1989 fall preview issue.[6] Learned later criticized producers for underutilizing Berry.[4] ABC canceled the series after 12 episodes in December 1989.[7]

I watched parts of Miss Learned's Television Academy interview. She said she actually had to audition for Living Dolls.
And then they wrote her out of two episodes and brought in Marion Ross!
The indignity!

To be fair, a lot of people probably had her confused with Karen Grassle...

Poor Michael Learned...she's probably the only actress ALW didn't offer to take the role of 'Norma Desmond' when Buckley was leaving 'Sunset Boulevard' in 1996. She must've been devastated.
