Unless the ball is involved in a significant play or an important game, its market value is pretty small. It's only valuable as a memento for the person at the game. Most people just think it's weird that the ball would be worth so much to a 60-year-old adult that she would deprive a kid of it, since the kid would be really excited about it and treasure it far longer than the woman would. If a ball fell in my lap, I'd probably look for the nearest kid to give it to.
