On Christy, Sydney Sweeney’s attempt at going butch for Oscar glory:

[quote] Meanwhile, Nick Schager wrote for The Daily Beast that Sweeney “gives a believable performance that almost transcends her role’s derivativeness. This manipulative hybrid of Rocky, Million Dollar Baby, and Monster, however, is so rote that even an A.I. wouldn’t dare try to pass it off as original.

Ouch.

That One Battle After Another movie had the most tepid trailer I've sat through in a while.

by Anonymousreply 4September 7, 2025 12:42 PM

Jarmusch’a film gives me pause. Imagine if we had Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett competing in the same category.

It would be 90s heaven. Like an holy implosion of JLo’s Movieline interview and Gwyneth’s Oscar speech .

by Anonymousreply 5September 7, 2025 12:46 PM

PTA’s new film One Battle After Another gets high praise from Spielberg.

I was considering the oddness of Chloe Zhao having two Directing Oscars before him.

The Oscars can go whichever way they like, but surely there is no doubt that unless John Chu screws the second half really bad, the constantly revisited classic from this year is going to be the [complete] Wicked?

Is Hollywood so determined on its own irrelevance that, in the full knowledge of that, it really wants the Oscars to ignore it? Or does DL just not want it considered because it is about women?

by Anonymousreply 7September 9, 2025 6:59 AM

DL thinksme. Wicked movies Wicked are just meh.

by Anonymousreply 8September 9, 2025 7:23 AM

Damn autocorrect. DL thinks Wicked movies are just meh.

by Anonymousreply 9September 9, 2025 7:26 AM

Kiss Of The Spiderwoman, Bill Condon

by Anonymousreply 10September 9, 2025 7:26 AM

Oh. So if you don't like Wicked, you're misogynistic.

by Anonymousreply 11September 9, 2025 8:40 AM

I'm confused by One Battle After Another.

One: It has a terrible title.

Two: If it's so good, then where's the buzz? Ads? It opens this month.

Three: Why is it avoiding the festivals?

I think PT Anderson is a terrific director so I can't see it not being at least pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 12September 9, 2025 8:43 AM

"One Battle..." is supposed to be "inspired" but Thomas Pynchon's "Vineland," which was one of my favorite novels ever. It was a comedy, though and this movie looks pretty serious.

by Anonymousreply 13September 9, 2025 9:51 AM

[quote] Why is it avoiding the festivals?

I wonder if that is a strategy?

by Anonymousreply 14September 9, 2025 9:09 PM

The social media embargo for One Battle After Another expired this morning and the praise is very very high so far

With Starletta DuPois as Grandma Jennie.

by Anonymousreply 16September 9, 2025 9:15 PM

As long as we don't see J-Ho, Goop, Timothee Chatroulette and specially Pedro Pascal get Oscar nominations next year, then I don't mind another pretentious/overhyped Oscar campaign for DiCaprio.

by Anonymousreply 17September 9, 2025 9:21 PM

I'm really hoping we DON'T get nominations for Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Jeremy Allan White, Timotay and Goop. They're already pushing very hard for them.

Julia and Geeorge's movies both got meh reviews so I think those dreams are dying. Goop and TimTam's movie hasn't even been SEEN by anyone...it's all hyperbole and bullshit at this point.

by Anonymousreply 18September 9, 2025 10:14 PM

Just because he should have an Oscar, I hope One Battle After Another actually is great and PT Anderson finally gets an Oscar. It's ridiulous he doesn't have one. I thing they're doing the stealth thing for this movie. Careful and subtle and not obvious.

Fincher, too.

by Anonymousreply 19September 9, 2025 10:17 PM

It’s always Oscar season on DL.

by Anonymousreply 20September 9, 2025 10:21 PM

Why is Timothy leading the best actor nom list? Have the Gold Derby folk actually seen his movie?

I hope OBAA is really a great film. The past decade has been very devoid of great films.

by Anonymousreply 21September 9, 2025 10:24 PM

R21 Because Timotay and the studios behind his movies, are willing to pay the money to promote his Oscar chances...for movies that aren't even finished. And, he has lunatic fanbots.

Gold Derby is full of loons pushing agendas. Which sometimes work.

by Anonymousreply 22September 9, 2025 10:29 PM

I think Tessa Thompson is an ideal choice to play Hedda Gabler. She had that sense of superiority and personal myth making going back to Veronica Mars.

But in the current climate, having this play on film as opposed to on stage will have people screaming “woke” and “unrealistic”.

Could Emma Thompson be a Best Actress contender for Dead of Winter?

by Anonymousreply 26September 26, 2025 7:11 AM

Rave for One Battle After Another from New York Times.

by Anonymousreply 27September 26, 2025 7:13 AM

I am so looking forward to it. Has anyone read Vineland?

I made the mistake by reading No Country For Old Men a few Months before watching the film. And it is such a faithful adaptation that I couldn’t appreciate the movie on its own terms at all.

by Anonymousreply 28September 26, 2025 8:21 AM

The Oscars are too busy giving participation trophies these days to give any thought to real awards.

by Anonymousreply 29September 26, 2025 11:12 AM

the Oscars have become meaningless and irrelevant and it's their own fault

by Anonymousreply 30September 26, 2025 8:39 PM

The Oscars have ALWAYS been meaningless and irrelevant.

by Anonymousreply 31September 26, 2025 9:26 PM

Sorry but what's happening there in that photo OP's post? Im confused

by Anonymousreply 32September 26, 2025 10:03 PM

My early predictions.

Picture: Hamnet

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio

Actress: Jesse Buckley (from what I've read this is basically locked)

by Anonymousreply 33September 26, 2025 10:46 PM

If Frankenstein makes it as a nominee, I'll be in heaven.

by Anonymousreply 34September 26, 2025 11:08 PM

Actor: Our dear Paul

by Anonymousreply 35September 27, 2025 12:40 AM

No more Noah Baumbach, I beg.

The only film of his I ever liked is Margot At The Wedding because it featured one of Nicole Kidman’s bitchiest performances.

by Anonymousreply 36September 27, 2025 1:42 PM

I saw OBAA and it is great, and Leo is indeed superb. But damn… Sean Penn was fucking amazing.

by Anonymousreply 37September 27, 2025 2:00 PM

I called this yesterday. One Battle After Another is going to be huge- I do think will have the momentum to take Best Picture and Best Director.

Sentimental Value peaked too early. Sinners- not happening.

A few folks that I am pulling for are Amy Madigan and Rose Byrne.

by Anonymousreply 38September 27, 2025 2:02 PM

R33- I thought that Hamnet would sweep. I even hear that Mescal is superb and not getting the traction yet.

Buckley 100% takes it.

I do not think Hamnet can beat OBAA now.. It might be a cool tight race which is always cool-

by Anonymousreply 39September 27, 2025 2:04 PM

R38 = a Haim sister

by Anonymousreply 40September 27, 2025 2:16 PM

Best Picture will go to Sinners. It’s the picture of the year and they’ve been laying the groundwork for it to win. It’s also long overdue for a movie to win that people have actually seen.

Best Actress will be rewarded to a big name actress after last year. The academy likes to balance things out and there are too many top drawer actresses in contention this time for some no name to collect it. This Buckley bitch whoever she is will get the critics prizes as consolation.

by Anonymousreply 41September 27, 2025 2:16 PM

Sinners will never win. I wish we could gamble here!

by Anonymousreply 42September 27, 2025 2:18 PM

R13 the reviews i've seen all describe this movie as mainly a comedy

by Anonymousreply 43September 27, 2025 2:20 PM

I saw One Battle After Another and honestly it's just okay. It will get tons of nominations but it's way too damn long and DiCaprio is just okay in it.

by Anonymousreply 44September 27, 2025 2:24 PM

One flop after another.

by Anonymousreply 45September 27, 2025 2:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 46September 27, 2025 2:32 PM

lol no, R26.

by Anonymousreply 47September 27, 2025 11:06 PM

I just love that Regina Hall could get some big-time attention from this. Good Black don’t crack and her playing a pregnant woman at 54 is fantastic.

She’s hilarious. She’s talented. She has been slept on for decades.

[Quote] Best Picture will go to Sinners.

😆😅🤣😂

by Anonymousreply 49September 28, 2025 7:34 AM

R58 she was amazing in Support The Girls.

by Anonymousreply 50September 28, 2025 7:47 AM

People would rather watch Michael B Jordan than a fat Leo and piece of grizzle Sean Penn.

This isn't 2005 anymore either. Tastes have changed.

by Anonymousreply 51September 28, 2025 3:00 PM

All I know in LIFE is that Sinners is not winning Best Picture. Jesus Christ- are there Sinners related agent and PR folks on this thread? Solid film that wanted to be everything and then slightly failed in each category resulting in a good- to very good- film.

I am hyping OBAA because to me it fits the bill, but there may be some other masterpiece coming later in the year that eclipses all-

I think the safest bet is Buckley overall. A Madigan win in Supporting would make the Oscars worth watching in my opinion.

by Anonymousreply 52September 28, 2025 3:13 PM

Buckley's PR shill is all over this thread.

by Anonymousreply 53September 28, 2025 3:18 PM

R53 Buckley has gotten across the board rave reviews for Hamnet. She will get considerable awards attention this season.

And, the horribly titled One Battle After Another is likely to be this year's Oppenheimer, in the sense, it's going to get love because PT Anderson is way overdue like Nolan was.

by Anonymousreply 54September 29, 2025 9:36 AM

Sinners is going to be this year's "Snub of the Year" thus causing anger and controversy and lots of "Oscars So White".

It'll probably get a Best Picture nomination but it'll get snubbed for Director or acting and Black Twitter is going to have a fit.

by Anonymousreply 55September 29, 2025 9:39 AM

[quote] It'll probably get a Best Picture nomination but it'll get snubbed for Director or acting

Based on what I have seen so far this year, it ought to be nominated for Actor and Director.

Not trying to be “woke”, I’m just saying Jordan and Coogler would be deserving nominees.

by Anonymousreply 56September 29, 2025 10:20 AM

I sat through 20 minutes of Sinners and was just not in the mood for it. I will revisit, but I don't think I will love it.

by Anonymousreply 57September 29, 2025 2:50 PM

It gets better, R57. Plus, the Asian guy is hot.

by Anonymousreply 58September 30, 2025 8:15 AM

Rose Byrne is taking a huge swing at Best Actress and would be up against her Damages costar.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 59October 12, 2025 6:14 PM

I am pulling for Rose- Would love to see her beat Buckely too- but Buckley seems unbeatable-

by Anonymousreply 60October 12, 2025 6:17 PM

Glenn Close doesn't have a serious contender in the Best Actress race this year, R59 (no, she's not even close to happening for The Summer Book). She has an outside shot for Knives Out 3 in Supporting Actress, though.

I don't think Jessie Buckley is unbeatable. Hamnet has been a festival favorite, but a lot of movies do very well on the festival circuit only to disappoint once mainstream critics and audiences see them, and Hamnet shares some qualities with recent ones that have. It's a depressing movie that's not going to make any money, and that's sometimes dangerous for a top Oscar contender.

She's probably still going to win, but Buckley isn't exactly Helen Mirren playing Queen Elizabeth. I wouldn't engrave her Oscar just yet.
