They murdered their mother by surprising her in cold blood, shooting her in the face with a 12 gauge shotgun, and then shooting her nine more times as she tried to crawl away.
Some "victims."

The word Monster might apply to everyone in that family.

Ed Gein only killed a few people and is mostly known for his disgusting arts and crafts projects. They should have picked someone else.

I think it’s because of the time he did it in and the numerous projects that used his sickness as inspiration.
The grave robbing must have been shocking.

I must have blinked. How the hell is Charlie Hunnam 45 years old?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 4, 2025 8:49 PM |
R19 the show is showing us all of them were monsters and victims in some way. Victims turned into monsters. Each of them.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 4, 2025 8:50 PM |
Regardless of who the “monster” is, look at the mess they made. Shotguns? In the house? That living room was just ruined. You don’t use shotguns in your own home. Take that shit outside like Alex Murdaugh.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 4, 2025 8:52 PM |
The Menendez boys were victims AND monsters. What they did wasn’t self defense. It was murder.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 4, 2025 8:55 PM |
So tired of this crap, and just the ugliness it celebrates, no matter what propaganda they spew about it. It's like turning "I Spit On Your Grave" into a movie of the week.
Stop it Ryan. Turn to the light.

I agree, r24. I just read Gein’s Wikipedia and I don’t know how anyone could live with that stuff in their head for long enough to write a book/tv show about it.

Meaning it's not a solid concept and the show is only being made to satisfy Netflix's huge demand for content, r37. Murphy's Netflix shows have been noticably weaker than his FX stuff, you slow cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 15, 2025 7:54 PM |
Charlie Hunnam is unconventionally handsome, a talented actor and has built an impressive resume. He reminds me of Evan Peters.
Ed Geins' real story has very little to do with the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The real story is even more sinister but far less dramatic.
And why do we need the disembodied mothers' voice trope?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 15, 2025 8:11 PM |
R38, the first two Monster seasons received a combined 23 Emmy nominations and are among Netflix’s highest rated original series. I think they’ve justified their right to exist, even if you dislike them.

[quote] Charlie Hunnam is unconventionally handsome
In what ways?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 15, 2025 9:38 PM |
It's correct to say that Gein was nowhere near as dangerous or scary as the more famous fictional characters he inspired like Norman Bates, but what he actually did was so extremely disgusting that it makes the fictional crimes seem mundane. disgusting If I recall correctly Gein cut out a female corpse's outer genitalia, preserved it, covered it in glitter and wore it around his house. This is the origin of Buffalo Bill's "woman suit" in "Silence of the Lambs." I don't follow true crime stuff so I don't know whether Gein's glitter crotchwear was ever actually depicted or even described in cinema or TV.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 15, 2025 9:51 PM |
Gein was the inspiration for both Psycho and Texas Chainsaw Massacre

This looks fantastic but I am the biggest SotLs fan so I am biased. I AM surprised that there's not any protests over the show as there was for SotL, frankly I assumed there would be more now than then.
The percentage of. real life serial killers who cross dressed (in whatever manner) is improbably statistically high, that's always fascinated me, never more than Buffalo Bill.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 15, 2025 11:27 PM |
Dahmer and the Menendez Brothers stories were a natural fit for Murphy's obvious love of mixing hot men, gay sex, and murder. Ed Gein's story was very much not like that at all, so I didn't understand why Murphy would do this until I saw that he was going to go into how this inspired Psycho and that someone had been cast as Anthony Perkins. Now it all makes sense.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 15, 2025 11:38 PM |
Lmao Dahmer wasn’t hot and the real Menendez bros aren’t that hot. Him casting hot actors as them is exactly what he did here.
Gay sex? The Menendez brothers being raped by their father isn’t “hot gay sex”.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 15, 2025 11:42 PM |
He may show that the story inspired Psycho but that isn’t what the show is about.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 15, 2025 11:42 PM |
r52, say what now? He picks hot men, adds scenes like the blowjob scene in the Menendez brothers season, etc. You'd have to be blind not to watch American Horror Story, Monster, etc. and not notice a trend. Ed Gein's preferences and story are not as natural a fit for the Ryan Murphy treatment, but since he's including that part about Psycho and Anthony Perkins, he'll be able to get some of his usual stuff in there.
And by the way, there's a lot of guys on DL who think the real Menendez brothers were pretty attractive when younger. Not my type, but get real.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 15, 2025 11:56 PM |
R54 AGAIN, the Psycho thing is Hitchcock and Perkins acknowledging Gein being the inspiration for Bates. We aren’t watching Perkins life. This is a show about Ed Gein. Not Perkins.
I understand you’re highly uneducated but this shouldn’t need to be explained to you.
WWing yourself is pointless btw
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 15, 2025 11:59 PM |
I didn't ww myself, r55. And I'm well aware of the history being a huge Hitchcock fan. And you are the idiot as you completely missed my point. I know damn well that won't be the focus of the show. But he'll absolutely be able to get his Ryan Murphy gay content in that way. Now fuck off, moron.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 16, 2025 12:02 AM |
He isn’t gonna use Perkins for gay content in a show about Gein. And yes, you keep WWing yourself.
Trust me, the educated men on here aren’t WWing your blatant stupidity.

by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 16, 2025 12:07 AM |
R58 the show isn’t about Perkins. He’s gonna be used in about 2 scenes.
FFing people and WWing yourself won’t change the facts. Go to school.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 16, 2025 12:10 AM |

Lah dee dah!
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 16, 2025 6:26 AM |
Grin didn’t necessarily cross dress, as much as he wanted to wear the skins of of the women he murdered.
He went as far as to dig out his mother from her grave, decapitated her corpse, and if I recall correctly, kept her head sitting around the house & used it as as disembodied symbolism, in order to have conversations with her.
He’d peel off the faces and skin of his few victims, preserve them or dry them out, in order wear them (which is where the cross dressing usually took place), or he’d make lamp shades or assorted nicknacks out of them.
Keep in mind that before all of this, he was digging up bodies in the local cemetery or private backyards, grave robbing, and engaging in necrophilia with his plunder.
Criminal Forensic Psychologists posit that this all happened due to the enmeshed relationship he had with his mother, which especially escalated after his older brother mysteriously died.
Gein was basically a mama’s boy, with a psychopathic bent. Had he not derived sexual pleasure from the essence of death/necrophilia, he would have just found another woman or a slew of women to replace his mother, since he was so disordered & pathological in his enmeshment with her, he would have been unable to make it on his own as an independent man, or as the head of household in a normal, family unit.

It’s more than just killing people stupid fuck. There are many people who’ve killed people who aren’t notorious. He is because of how he did it and his story. He used to skin the people and wear their skin and then put the skin on his mother’s corpse. He would wear their lingerie and dance around in them. And he claimed his mother (who was dead and who he dug up from the grave and kept her dead body in the house) was still talking to him. He could hear her voice in his head and would have full conversations and arguments with her (she was dead).

Ed Gein only CONFESSED to killing two women. That doesn’t mean he didn’t kill more. He also exhumed numerous bodies from the nearby cemetery and made them into masks and more things. And he killed his brother even though he never confessed to it either.
Ed and his brother were allegedly fighting a fire near their home when Ed came running back home claiming he couldn’t find his brother and then the cops came and they found Henry dead on the ground. He had markings on his body and head like he’d been hit numerous times but the police didn’t do an autopsy and just declared asphyxiation as the cause of death.

Ed Gein was small in stature. He was short and thin.
Ryan Murphy knows having hot guys play the roles sells more than having guys who actually resemble the monsters.

Perkins didn’t seem so much a creep to me but just paranoid and scared and worried. He was so paranoid all the time, which I’m sure being a gay man in 1960 does to you, especially one who wants to be an actor.

The finale was good but all fake.
Ed Gein didn’t help with finding Ted Bundy.
There is no proof that Richard Speck idolized Ed Gein. He did know of him but never wrote to him.
And of course Ryan couldn’t not exploit Richard Speck having tits and being the pass around in prison. I remember that infamous video that leaked in the 90s that caused a media frenzy because no one knew how Richard had access to a camera and the fact he was living his best life in prison with unlimited drugs and special treatment and being all the mens pass around bottom

R132 he probably lied. As usual. He doesn’t even understand that Ed Gein isn’t a figure for the amount he killed but for his story and life.
Also, He ended up being diagnosed schizophrenic after being in a mental hospital for a while because he was deemed unfit for trial. That’s why he could hear his (dead) mother talking to him and others and kept seeing people who weren’t really there.
Yes he murdered two people (and potentially his brother) but he seemed genuinely mentally troubled and wasn’t just doing it for his own rush etc. like so many others. He at least showed remorse for what he did eventually, something many others never did.
Not making excuses for what he did, he was still a murderer, but it was sad. It didn’t help his mother was awful to him and it deeply affected him.

R89 He killed those two people in an extremely graphic and gruesome manner. He also exhumed numerous women from the cemetery and (to put it very lightly) desecrated their bodies.
People's mothers, sisters, daughters, grandmothers and aunts had their bodies violated, crudely dismembered and "fashioned" into furniture and macabre arts and crafts projects.
That is the stuff of nightmares.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | October 4, 2025 6:56 PM |
Yes. He made a body suit out of women’s skin and would carve out their vulvas and dry them out so he could keep them.
He also would sometimes fuck the dead womans body after digging her up, before dismembering her.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | October 4, 2025 6:58 PM |

R156 same as season 1 and 2. You’re acting like this is the first season that has this. All biopics take liberties.
You’re on Reddit too much. Maybe put that time into a job and help your family out.

All biopics take liberties, but this one is pretty ridiculous
Why did they give him a cute blond "girlfriend" who never existed in real life? Adds nothing to the story
by Anonymous | reply 158 | October 5, 2025 1:16 PM |
Every single one of these types of movies and shows takes ridiculous amounts of liberties. This isn’t even as big an Offender as some to them
Adeline is the one thing that’s truly made up and of course the timeline can be messed up or how the events went down.
People keep making shit up online. I saw someone on tiktok arguing he never made furniture out of peoples skin even though he did in fact. And people in the comments like “oh wow I didn’t know that’s made up” when it isn’t made up. A bunch of Gen Z slow people who are grown with second grade reading comprehension talking about shit they don’t know about.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | October 5, 2025 1:43 PM |
I don’t really watch Murphy productions for historical accuracy. I’ve come to realize he blends the truth with fictional storytelling. You’d be hard pressed to get 8 hours of a watchable series without adding dramatic elements. It’s meant to be an interpretation of Gein’s life. People need to understand that about Murphy.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | October 5, 2025 1:54 PM |
Adeline was an actual person, so not “truly made up”. I do doubt the REAL Adeline knew what Gein was up to.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | October 5, 2025 1:57 PM |
The next Monster: will be Lizzie Borden, played by Ella Beatty. Ryan Murphy sure loves to cast the offspring of famous folks. She went to Juilliard and was pretty good in Feud:Swans, so not totally egregious, I guess.
I love Vicky Krieps (watch CORSAGE if you haven’t) so it was nice to see her in this Gein story and to read she will be in the Borden installment.

This feels like the last thing in the world I would want to see: re-enactment of torture and murder to titillate and shock, two prime objectives of most of his projects.
At least most of the friends and relatives of the victims of this killer are dead and won’t have to bear all the press surrounding another of his series, unlike the Dahmer one.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | October 5, 2025 3:23 PM |

Isn’t the true crime obsession all about what makes them tick?
Here we get simplified answers to that in the very first episode - hard family life, and being somewhat ostracized for how soft-spoken he was and how meek he seemed to be.
Everything else - Nazi atrocities, Hitchcock and the gang, other serial killers - feels like padding for that Full Season Order.
There really is no 8 hours of insightful material here. I wish these ‘auteurs’ would push back on that Netflix standard. Give us 3-4-5 tight episodes, or just a good movie.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | October 6, 2025 11:17 AM |
I know he used it before, the beginning of Coven, but I liked the Iron Butterfly (Dolarhyde/Manhunter) homage about halfway through the series, another caricature character inspired by Gein.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | October 6, 2025 2:38 PM |
The cast and Ian Brennan defend criticisms that the show glamorizes the murders and actions of Gein.

I think you're really misunderstanding what the show is about? It's pretty clearly about the lineage of Horror as Modern Entertainment -- from the Holocaust to Gein to Psycho to Exploitation Movies like the Nazisplitation of the 70s to Texas Chainsaw and Silence of the Lambs. It's just using Gein as its gateway. I think it's very smart and also total trash and I love it.

No fucking way Bundy corresponded with vile trash like Richard Speck. No way. Also, they knew the Florida killings were Bundy because he did them after he escaped from jail. The question wasn't who, but rather where he was.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | October 8, 2025 3:25 AM |
Ridiculous that Gein told investigators that Bundy "had a type" when he (Bundy) was shown earlier in that same episode running into a dark room seemingly at random to attack the sleeping sorority girls. He didn't appear concerned with what "type" they were!
by Anonymous | reply 186 | October 8, 2025 9:59 AM |
It ain't a documentary.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | October 8, 2025 10:14 AM |
R186 But prior to that, Ted did have a physical type. The Florida incident was Ted going on an uncharacteristic rampage after being locked up for years. As one does.
Or look at it this way -- sorority girls in general were Ted's type. As opposed to hookers or truck stop waitresses.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | October 8, 2025 10:22 AM |
R185 of course they did not correspond. They were from different times buddy. Lmao.
The show isn’t saying they “corresponded”. What did you watch? The show is saying Ed Gein (or Hollywood’s version of Ed Gein) popularized and romanticized Gein and influenced others after him.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | October 8, 2025 1:47 PM |
The series is a lot smarter than people are giving it credit for because some people (Gen Z, cough) don’t understand what they’re watching.
The show is less about Gein himself than it is about Hollywood exploiting his story in various ways for their own gain and popularizing heinous acts like the ones he committed. That’s why we see so many jumps between him and Hollywoods versions of him.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | October 8, 2025 1:49 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 191 | October 8, 2025 1:55 PM |
R190, it's a campy Ryan Murphy show. It's not "smart"...but I guess people are looking to attack "Gen Z" even though I'd wager most of the critics who've savaged this show are older than that
It's not Shakespeare
Ryan Murphy himself glamorizes murderers.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | October 8, 2025 2:12 PM |

Hunnam is playing creepy by not blinking. I stated watching episode one and in closeups, he isn't. My friend who knew nothing about him or saw him in anything before finished the show and said, just give the Emmy to him, he's that good.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | October 8, 2025 3:02 PM |
It took me a couple episodes to settle into that voice he was using, but once I “got it” I was really impressed. I thought his scenes with Lesley Manville were really powerful. Manville and Vicky Krieps will both be Emmy-nominated for this. To be honest, I’m not sure who I would choose to win. Today it’s Manville, tomorrow it could be Krieps.
Laurie Metcalf was great but that’s nothing I haven’t already seen from here. Manville was just devastating.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | October 8, 2025 3:09 PM |
R188 Yes, he did have a type, you're right. His type was people who looked like his ex. Long, dark hair, parted in the middle. This was all about getting back at the girl who broke his heart. He then wooed her back just to break up with her. All the women he killed for the most part, looked like her.

by Anonymous | reply 202 | October 8, 2025 3:38 PM |
Ryan Murphy just slaps his name on things these days - I'm sure there's an edict about a necessary allotment of gayness and nudity but he really isn't making this show. It's much more about Ian Brennan running things on the Monster shows

I'm currently watching "Le Serpent" series on Netflix, bases upon the real life serial killer, Charles Sobhraj. When you read the Wiki on him, it's flabbergasting how he got away with it all, got caught, and was eventually released after serving time. He's still alive. He's murdered at least 20 people and had 3 wives (all obsessed with him).
