Indeed. Without his Emporio, where else would the Northeast corridor's guidos and guidettes have bought their flashy ugly crap?

In my mind, I always associate Armani, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein.

by Anonymousreply 21September 4, 2025 2:16 PM

I so admired this man. He didn't make a big until relatively late in life.

He started his business in his 30s and very quickly his partner/business partner died. Nobody thought he would make it without the business side the partner provided.

He proved them wrong, obviously, set the aesthetic for the 80s, never sold his company, and this season much of the menswear looks like his early work.

RIP.

Instead of black, I will be wearing beige to mourn his loss.

by Anonymousreply 31September 4, 2025 3:27 PM

Very classy, very understated design in an era where flashy detail seems to reign over everything. Seemed to have been a very nice man as well, quiet and unassuming, a huge rarity in his field. Won't see the likes of him again soon, as they say.

by Anonymousreply 32September 4, 2025 3:31 PM

[quote]He started his business in his 30s and very quickly his partner/business partner died. Nobody thought he would make it without the business side the partner provided.

A friend of mine owned one of the first Emporio shops in Italy. I attended an Emporio show in Milan. His partner Sergio was in the audience and was showing the signs of AIDS and died soon after.

by Anonymousreply 33September 4, 2025 3:33 PM

R11, he identified as bi. Weird that you're engaging in your own "erasure" while complaining

by Anonymousreply 34September 4, 2025 3:36 PM

R34 He was not Bi, he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 35September 4, 2025 3:51 PM

Very true on the aesthetic and personal class, R32. When Cavalli died recently, Armani issued a personal statement acknowledging that their styles couldn't be more different, yet he expressed admiration for the intent and committment to a unique, and uniquely Italian, design.

by Anonymousreply 52September 4, 2025 10:54 PM

I prefer Versace but RIP.

by Anonymousreply 53September 4, 2025 10:57 PM

What I always admired about him was that he was a handsome distinguished looking man who always seemed to have a sense of humility, and did not have an air of arrogance.

Unlike Tom Ford, D&G, and particularly Karl fucking Lagerfeld and that damn fan!

He seemed like a quiet, unassuming man who loved what he did. At least that's the impression I had of him.

I know Italy is still pretty homophobic and he was very low key about being gay.

by Anonymousreply 54September 4, 2025 11:11 PM

"Seemed to have been a very nice man as well, "

Well, besides that little matter of tax evasion, of course. Aren't you ladies always screaming about the rich not paying "their fair share?" Is it different for Giorgio because he was handsome, successful and gay?

by Anonymousreply 55September 4, 2025 11:19 PM

Ok sorry for the dumb question. If his long time partner, who appeared to be the top (?) passed from AIDS, how did Giorgio stay negative?

by Anonymousreply 56September 4, 2025 11:24 PM

Some people just got lucky. (Except for the "partner dying" part of course.)

by Anonymousreply 57September 5, 2025 12:06 AM

I thought that gay guy killed him in the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 58September 5, 2025 12:31 AM

[quote]I know Italy is still pretty homophobic and he was very low key about being gay.

ALL Italians are well aware of Armani, Valentino, D&G and countless other Italian celebrities that are gay and don't give a shit. Armani was a God in Italy.

Calvin Klein had to fucking get married, Armani never had to go down that road. Valentino is always shown together with his partner in Italy. D&G are a couple. Gianfranco Ferre', Moschino...no one cared that they were gay.

by Anonymousreply 59September 5, 2025 12:41 AM

Oh...and of course Versace

by Anonymousreply 60September 5, 2025 12:42 AM

Who was he wearing when he keeled!?

by Anonymousreply 61September 5, 2025 1:59 AM

Will he be buried in an Armani suit ?

by Anonymousreply 62September 5, 2025 2:01 AM

R59 Giovanni Versace was a pussy hound. Big Mussolini supporter.

by Anonymousreply 63September 5, 2025 2:19 AM

R63 Who is Giovanni Versace?

by Anonymousreply 64September 5, 2025 2:26 AM

R64 His gubmint bitch.

by Anonymousreply 65September 5, 2025 2:36 AM

I thought he was already dead.

by Anonymousreply 66September 5, 2025 3:09 AM

Does Andrew Cunanan know?

by Anonymousreply 67September 5, 2025 3:57 AM

He never dressed me. Therefore, no condolences.

by Anonymousreply 68September 5, 2025 3:58 AM

R59 - oh please - they get a pass because they are famous designers. But Dolce & Gabbana have famously said some very homophobic things about gay marriage, gays adopting children, etc.

Italy is still homophobic and lags far behind many other Western European countries.

To say they don't is absurd.

by Anonymousreply 69September 5, 2025 4:07 AM

His women's clothes sucked.

by Anonymousreply 70September 5, 2025 5:19 AM

I still remember my very first Armani purchase back in 1985 at Sibley’s in Rochester, NY—a shirt made from the most incredible fabric I had ever seen in menswear. The best part? It was on sale. Such talent and vision. Rest in peace.

I'm betting it was your ONLY Armani purchase. Don't try to wear it today, you will never fit into it.

by Anonymousreply 73September 5, 2025 11:43 AM

Did Armani also style Anthony Hopkins' wig at R72?

by Anonymousreply 74September 5, 2025 12:03 PM

GIANNI Versace.

by Anonymousreply 75September 5, 2025 3:35 PM

True loss. Didn't know he was so old. Always preferred his understated stuff compared to the flamboyant Versace (despise Gucci, as well.)

by Anonymousreply 76September 5, 2025 5:35 PM

R69 You've never spent time in Italy.

by Anonymousreply 77September 5, 2025 5:50 PM

R73, no — as I mentioned, that was actually my very first Armani purchase. I was just a junior in college, and honestly, it was a big stretch for me at the time ($$). After graduating and landing a job in New York, I ended up buying plenty of Armani. I really wish I still had that shirt! Back in college I was very skinny, but after years of consistent workouts my body has changed quite a bit. So you’re probably right — it wouldn’t fit me now.

by Anonymousreply 78September 6, 2025 8:09 AM

Profound confidence

by Anonymousreply 79September 6, 2025 2:24 PM

The NYTimes has gone crazy with articles about Armani.

I doubt any other designer, or maybe even celebrity, has ever been given such coverage by one newspaper in the space of just a few days.

So the far articles include:

- Giorgio Armani, Italian Fashion Designer, Dies at 91

- Video: Giorgio Armani Dies at 91

- Giorgio Armani’s Life in Photos

- Opinion | Giorgio Armani Invented Quiet Luxury

- How Giorgio Armani Conquered Hollywood

- Giorgio Armani Changed the Way People Dress. Twice.

- Young Armani Fans Mourn the Loss of Their Favorite Designer

- Opinion | Barneys’ Gene Pressman Remembers Giorgio Armani

- Giorgio Armani Is for Everyone (Even if You Can’t Afford It)

by Anonymousreply 80September 6, 2025 3:31 PM

I met Giorgio Armani several times over the years. The 1st time was in 1996 when I had to attend meetings in Florence& Milan with the European heads of the major finance companies. The short version of the story is Armani asked me "who designed your suit, I told him GUESS!!"

He looks me up & down, runs his hands along my shoulders& back, smooths the lapels and says, "custom made Perry Ellis" and blesses himself. He was like "Perry understood menswear".

2 days later, I was being fitted for Armani in Milan.

by Anonymousreply 81September 6, 2025 5:03 PM

R81....that's funny.

I guess it was 1984 or '85, I attended an Emporio show in Milan and took photographs. I sent the photos to Robert McDonald, Perry Ellis' partner and friend of mine. They were happy to get them. This was before the internet when it was a lot harder to know what was going on.

by Anonymousreply 82September 6, 2025 6:04 PM

[quote]I doubt any other designer, or maybe even celebrity, has ever been given such coverage by one newspaper in the space of just a few days.

A lot of that stuff was probably worked up in advance, just waiting for him to die.
