Why the hell is R4 so upset? It's not like there's a thread limit. A "dozen or more better posts" can be posted in the followup thread. Plus, seems like a good time to run out the thread before today's play starts.

The Asian guy reminds me of attending the indoor carpet tournament they used to play at Wembley Arena in London in the 80s.
There was an old woman in the crowd who was, apparently, an Ivan Lendl superfan - as unlikely a concept as that seems. She would constantly and conspicuously shriek "LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENDLLLLLLLLLLLLL" in a quavering old lady voice as soon as the after point cheering died down - which would then provoke hilarity from the crowd.

As much as I hate Iga, these girls better wake up because if she wins this USO, at only 24 Iga will be a 7 time grand slam champion. At this point the conversation will shift from iga #1 player in the world to IGA in contention to become one of the greatest players of all time.

They should bring Novaxx's match forward. You know that would royally piss him off!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 2, 2025 9:28 PM |
They probably won't change it at this late hour since the players' daily schedule was based on starting at 8 pm or later today.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 2, 2025 9:30 PM |
Maybe they will put Venus and Leylah and Taylor on Ashe, though that would piss off everyone who bought tix for Armstrong.

Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 2, 2025 10:27 PM |
Yeah, Siniakova and TT are the best doubles team I didn't expect Granny V to win, but after winning three rounds, I'd expect Fernandez-Williams to lose like 6-2, 6-3 or something. A pretty big victory by the top team, but at least showing some competitiveness by Venus-Fernandez.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 2, 2025 10:29 PM |
Fernandez could be a formidable force in doubles with the right partner.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | September 2, 2025 10:38 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 2, 2025 11:37 PM |
I sense Fritz will suffer a beating at the hands of Novaxx. A beating so great a la Bublik v Sinner
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 3, 2025 12:17 AM |
It's a bit tragic the only thing of interest about Fritz is that he has a child.

Djokovic is desperate to compete with Carlos. Fritz is done and dusted, just a minor hurdle . Djokovic would love to win the semis against Carlos and I bet if he wins he will mock Carlos' golf/racket victory celebration schtick

by Anonymous | reply 111 | September 3, 2025 3:40 AM |
R110, because he’s a great player. You can tell the man truly is passionate about the sport. So many of you sound like jealous whiney babies about him.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | September 3, 2025 3:45 AM |
I didn't even watch the Novaxx match. I hate him so much. I can only watch once I know he's lost.

R115 it's Argentine, Camilo Ugo Carabelli.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | September 3, 2025 4:27 AM |
R112, that's ridiculous. Nobody's disputing that Novaxx is a great player. That doesn't change his level of arrogance, tone deafness, and absolute unlikability. The same can be said of his predecessors, "great" players like Lendl, Nastase, Connors and McEnroe. We're not jealous. We're disgusted.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | September 3, 2025 6:37 AM |
^ Agree. You can admire his amazing tennis and phenomenal records while despising him personally, which I wholeheartedly do. I fervently hope Carlitos defeats him in straights.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 3, 2025 7:10 AM |
Why would anyone here feel jealousy towards a specific tennis player? They all lead lives and enjoy wealth and fame beyond (I would imagine) any of us could hope to attain? Why would we single out a specific player? Oh yes... because he has a particularly noxious personality.
I respect his achievements, his records, his single-minded focus across so many years, his ability to be clutch in key moments - the contrast with Fritz in this regard was stark last night - but I will always root against him because of his extreme arrogance and narcissism.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 3, 2025 8:10 AM |
Well, you must be a much better person than I am R119 because I don't respect anything about Djokovic at all. Any sporting talent he has is completely overshadowed by what an appalling person he is on every level.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 3, 2025 8:17 AM |
It's a shame, really, because when Djokovic first appeared, he was likable - cheerful, jokey, happy to strip off..

I can't even say Taylor had flashes of brilliance last night. It was pure, dumb luck that he took the third set. I think Nole threw him a bone because it was so ridiculous.
That match was so boring (even though it wasn't in straight sets) that I flipped over to Paramount to watch the last episodes of Yellowstone. That match was on par with Sakkari playing a night match last week.

by Anonymous | reply 143 | September 3, 2025 8:00 PM |
I'm sure someone has already mentioned this (I haven't read every comment in the various threads so far), but Sinner's outfit color at this US Open is unfortunate. The other night his sweat made it look like his shorts were stained and he had pissed himself or had an unfortunate diarrhea episode. Combined with his very stiff manner of walking, it wasn't a flattering look. Not as bad as Jess Pegula's period stained top, but definitely not good.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | September 3, 2025 8:03 PM |
Happy for Felix, but my God the level in that match was mediocre.

I actually have no problem with Iga's personality. She's unapologetically 'all business' with her tennis, which includees post-match interview nonsense. She ain't lettin' anybody take up her time. But that's all that we get to see for the most part.

Muchova is a delight to watch despite getting overpowered tonight. It’s fun to see how the top Czech girls have kept some of the Navratilova style alive. Taylor Townsend had a good run with her serve-volley gadfly antics, but the entire time she was losing against Ova-krejčík, all I kept telling the TV is "you’re not gonna out-Czech a great Czech player".

So proud of AA for how she showed up against Iga! She had a bit of a rocky start but she pulled it out. Also glad for Osaka. It will be the Battle of Mental Health in the semi-finals. I would, however, like to have an all-female final. If only the American men could get their shit together.
I know we're at the end of the US Open but, can we consider renaming AA to Mother, Juggs and Speed rather than Milk Truck? Just a thought.

R215, Chrissie, it that you?
by Anonymous | reply 218 | September 4, 2025 2:17 PM |
R217, it’s not just the predictability. There’s no personal engagement. Most great players have strong personalities; a lot of the drama of tennis is seeing how that influences the way that they play. You get caught up in watching them problem-solve and work their way out of patches of bad play. With Sinner there’s nothing.

Revealed: US Open officials let Jannik Sinner bag thief off with a WARNING despite calls for lifetime ban
Questions have been raised over security at the US Open after a man who tried to steal from the bag of world No 1 Jannik Sinner was allowed to walk free with a mere warning.
The brazen attempted theft occurred on Monday night after the Italian had just secured his spot in the quarter-finals with a victory on Arthur Ashe.
The courtside seats in the stadium cost fans thousands of dollars per session, and one man quickly went viral after using his access to attempt to steal from Sinner's bag.
The Italian, a four-time Grand Slam champion, was posing for selfies with fans when the unidentified man leant over and tried to unzip his bag without him noticing, before a security guard realized what was happening and swatted his hand away.
Incredibly, USTA officials confirmed to the Daily Mail on Monday that no further action was taken, despite fans on social media calling for the man to be banned for life from attending the tournament.
He was given a slap on the wrist after being asked to leave the US Open grounds - hardly a punishment given play had finished for the day and all other fans were leaving too.
It is understood US Open officials believed a warning was sufficient punishment for him to not try anything similar in the future.
On social media, though, tennis fans called for the man to be banned, with one writing: 'This should be a lifetime ban, not a dirty look.'
Another added: 'wtf is wrong with people? NYC brings out the worst. I swear.'
The incident was far from the first time that headlines at this year's US Open tournament were dominated by bizarre behavior from members of the crowd.
A Polish millionaire businessman attracted fury last week when he stole a player's cap that was intended for a young fan.
Piotr Szczerek was unmasked by internet sleuths after a viral video showed him swiping the memento intended for a child, known as Brock, by tennis star Kamil Majchrzak.

Jannik Sinner breaks silence on would-be US Open bag thief
“No, I haven’t experienced (anything like that),” Sinner said Wednesday night after he dismissed fellow Italian Lorenzo Mussetti in straight sets.
“You know it was …. I checked straight away if he took something because I don’t have only rackets there. I have my phone, my wallet, but, you know, the security is doing a great job. Especially on court, there’s lots of security and I believe especially in big tournaments (they do) an amazing job to make us feel safe. New things happen like this that makes (what they’re doing) a great job.”

The top women today are committing a crazy amount of unforced errors and GS titles are now decided by it. Anisimova hit 23 UEs in that first set, basically giving away four games. Keys. Gauff, Sabalenka.....it's crazy
Go back and look at GS matches of Graf and Seles and Navratilova when they were at the top of the rankings and they barely hit any unforced errors at all.

Alcaraz hasn't lost a single set on his way to the finals, which is more than can be said of Sinner.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | September 5, 2025 9:52 PM |
Alcaraz was mediocre today. Equal winners to UEs, missed drop shots, low first serve percentage. It was enough but it wasn't great.
by Anonymous | reply 350 | September 5, 2025 10:04 PM |
OK - 2 questions:
1. Why are crowds cheering SO MUCH for Novaxx? When did they start liking him while we at DL continue to loathe him?
2. NYT repeats the rumor that Dump will attend the men’s final - ruining it for everyone. Is it possible that he and his peeps are deluded enough to think they won’t get met with contempt and derision, to put it mildly. Or maybe they’ll just sneak him in through the back door and hold no one notices- but that’s not really his m.o. is it?
Can someone help me understand the above?

Oh FFS. Novaxx is saying he'll continue on in 2026 because he believes he can still win another slam.
Dude, you really need to know when to bow out with dignity. I really hope he starts to embarrass himself with some early round exits.

[quote]Why are crowds cheering SO MUCH for Novaxx?
Many of the spectators aren't real tennis fans.
by Anonymous | reply 357 | September 5, 2025 11:21 PM |
Maybe people respect the fact that he's one of the greatest if not the greatest tennis player of all time at the end of his career. I don't agree with all the things Novak has done, but his tennis is the closest to perfection that I've ever seen. He has a huge ego, but that's to be expected at that level of the sport. He seems like a loving father and generally a nice guy to be around.

Alcaraz on Trump attending the US Open final: "It’s a privilege for the tournament having the president from (any) country to support the tournament and support tennis. For me playing in front of him, to be honest, I will try not to be focused and think about that. I don’t want myself to be nervous because of it but I think attending the tennis match is great for tennis to have the president into the final."

PSA for those attending Indian Wells this year. Pre-sale tickets are on sale. You can use the code "PRESALE" and get them before it goes to general on-sale. Might be a good time to get your hotel if you're planning on going multiple days.
I'm all set, and you can expect another daily update of the first week from me.

by Anonymous | reply 372 | September 6, 2025 1:29 AM |
We went last year for the first quarterfinals day, day after labor day. I think around $1500 for two tickets to both day and night sessions in Ashe. Day tix were ok, night was too rowdy for my taste. A lot of fun, the grounds are awesome. Wandered around a bit and caught a few doubles matches. If we did it again I'd go later in the first week and wander around and try to catch more random 3rd or 4th round matches. Or just do 2 day sessions and skip nights. Very easy to get to from our hotel in the West Village (one transfer) and with the city quiet during August you can make a pleasant weekend in NY out of it.

"Milk Truck doesn't stand a chance. I can't stand hot dog lips She-Hulk."
Anisimova just beat Sabalenka at Wimbledon and has a 6-3 record against her. She likes the matchup. I don't think this makes Anisimova the favorite and, sure, I still probably expect Sabs to win. But "no chance?" She has a chance.

Let’s not forget Iga who leaves the court after every single set she loses. The off court rule was designed for injury time outs where a private part of the body is being treated or a bathroom break is needed. Not for a “mental regrouping..” The rule is abused by almost everyone. When Felix left the court I suppose he was faking an injury too?
