Jelena Ostapenko explodes after US Open upset loss as victorious Taylor Townsend reveals what was said

Tennis star Jelena Ostapenko was forced to deny being 'racist' after she told her black opponent Taylor Townsend she has 'no education and no class' in an extraordinary rant at the US Open.

Ostapenko is notorious for her bad temper and she became embroiled in yet another post-match argument after losing in straight sets to the American in the second round.

In the wake of her victory, Townsend revealed to ESPN: 'She told me I have no class, no education and to see what happens when we get outside the US.

'So, I'm looking forward to it: I beat her in Canada, outside the US, so let's see what else she has to say... it's competition, people get upset when they lose, some people say bad things.'

Shortly after, Ostapenko revealed on social media that she had been inundated with allegations of racism. The Latvian strongly denied the claims.

'Wow how many messages I received that I am a racist,' she wrote on Instagram. 'I was NEVER racist in my life and I respect all nations of people in the world, for me it doesn't matter where you come from.'

In her post-match press conference, Townsend was then asked if she believed there was any racial undertones to Ostapenko's comments.

'That's something that you're going to have to ask her,' she said. 'I didn't take it in that way, but also that has been a stigma in our community of being not educated and all of the things when it's the furthest thing from the truth.'

The American continued: 'I can't speak on what her intentions were... saying I have no education and no class, I don't really take that personally, because I know that it's so far from the truth.... whether it had racial undertones or not, that's something she can speak on.'

Townsend added that she is 'very proud as a Black woman being out here representing myself and representing us and our culture. I make sure that I do everything that I can to be the best representation possible every time that I step on the court and even off the court.'

The two players clashed after a brief post-match handshake. Courtside microphones did not pick up much of what was said but Townsend could be heard repeatedly telling Ostapenko to 'take the L (loss)'.

The trigger for the rumpus appeared to be Townsend not giving the conventional apology when her shot clipped the top of the net at 5-5 in the first set.

'You have to say sorry,' said Ostapenko after the match. 'No I don't have to say sorry,' replied Townsend.

The rest of the exchange was drowned out by the enthusiastic boos of the New York crowd. Townsend walked away from Ostapenko eventually and spent 30 seconds whipping up the crowd.

The Latvian soon took to social media to explain her outburst, claiming: 'I told my opponent she was very disrespectful as she had a net ball in a very deciding momen (sic) and didn’t say sorry, but her answer was that she doesn’t have to say sorry at all.'

Ostapenko continued: 'It was first time ever that this happened to me on tour... if she plays in her homeland it doesn’t mean that she can behave and do whatever she wants.'

The former French Open champion also appeared to take issue with Townsend choosing to start her warm-up at the net which, she claimed, 'is very disrespectful and against the rules of a tennis match.'

Townsend branded Ostapenko's explanation 'comical.' The American also said she didn't expect an apology and was 'not surprised at all' by her opponent's behavior.

'I've never been the one to back down from anything like that,' Townsend said. 'You're not going to insult me, especially after I carried myself a certain type of way with nothing but respect. If I show respect to you, I expect respect as well.

'So it was unfortunate, but it's something I can put on my TikTok,' she added with a laugh. 'I'm just not going to tolerate disrespect... if you have something to say or you feel some type of way, you say it to my face, and we can talk about it, we can hash it out.'

Ostapenko has built a reputation for being among tennis' most combustible characters. Last year the 28-year-old made headlines after she refused to shake hands with rival Victoria Azarenka.

A few weeks earlier, Ostapenko blew up at an umpire, accusing the official of being 'blind'. 'You make so much mistakes. I never want you on my match again,' she said. 'You ruin my matches… I will never forget, never.'

Back in 2022, meanwhile, the Latvian was fined $10,000 for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' after knocking over her chair with a water bottle at Wimbledon.

And a year earlier, she clashed with Ajla Tomljanovic after the Australian accused Ostapenko of faking an injury.

'You know she's lying,' Tomljanovic told the umpire. 'If you think I'm faking it, you can talk with the physio,' Ostapenko replied. 'Your behavior is terrible. You have zero respect.' The Latvian then branded her opponent 'the worst player on tour.'

Daniil Medvedev was fined $42,500 by the U.S. Open for his first-round meltdown in his loss to France’s Benjamin Bonzi.

That penalty represents more than a third the $110,000 tournament prize money won by Medvedev, who also appeared to make an obscene gesture during the match.

Fernandez is a perfect partner for Venus - their games compliment each other. Venus still has a pretty good serve and great groundstrokes if she's not reaching (which she has to do less of in doubles). She's NOT serving and volleying (did she ever S&V a lot?), so Fernandez being super active and mobile and willing to poach at the net is key. And as they've gotten deeper, Venus' volleying has got better. Older tennis players don't lose their skills, they lose their movement. If a less mobile player pairs with a very mobile player who can get balls that the less mobile player can't, they can do well.

I love that robotic, little-personality-on-court Sinner is quietly maximizing his fuck potential and hooking up with multiple models. Few people have the status to sleep with a lot of hot/beautiful people - whether it's based on fame, money, and/or being good looking themselves. Why wouldn't you?

It's a BS argument. It's "prize money" - money for advancing to a certain stage of the tournament or winning. It's not hourly rate pay for amount of time played. The point has been made ad nauseam and it's never gotten any traction. First, the Slams don't want to do it because it would change the entire two-week structure of a Slam which would in turn change the entire yearly calendar. Second, it's not like women are refusing. I know Sabalenka said something about not wanting to play best of five, but still, if they were told "you have to play best of five or not earn the same amount of money" I'm sure the women would get quickly on board. But again, the Slams don't want to change it.

Agree - watching Venus and Leylah has made me like Leylah a whole lot more. I actively disliked her before.

I’m happy Amanda is trying to be more positive (per MJ and Rennae) but watching her still seems like watching a nervous breakdown in slow motion.

I love Jannik. He IS like an AI created tennis player but for me that’s what makes it fun to watch. To each his own.

I got to like Jannik more as I heard him interviewed more. Smart, well-spoken, great personality. I still like Carlos, but I used to affirmatively root for him over Jannik, and I really don't anymore.

It must be said:

Great player he may be, but Sinner is exceptionally ... un-photogenic.

And time-worn expressions like "uglier than a box of hammers" or "face like a slapped ass" don't quite cut it.

I think he's actually very photogenic if not traditionally handsome or ugly to some.

I think Jannik is actually quite handsome though a bit asexual.

I hope that spanking shuts Bublik up for a while. Like Kyrgios and - let's be honest - Big Foe, he has a wildly inflated opinion of his talent and relevance in the sport.

Jannik cleans up VERY well. He can looks sort of Ginger Crypt Keeper on court but freshened up he has a a good look. Maybe not for everyone but it's unique and I attractive in a way different from other guys.

The attempt to rebrand Sinner as “the Fox” is cringe-worthy. Maybe he is a nice guy but that makes watching him even more of a chore. There’s no drama, no nothing.
