Jelena Ostapenko explodes after US Open upset loss as victorious Taylor Townsend reveals what was said
by Anonymous | reply 101 | August 28, 2025 2:15 AM |
Tennis star Jelena Ostapenko was forced to deny being 'racist' after she told her black opponent Taylor Townsend she has 'no education and no class' in an extraordinary rant at the US Open.
Ostapenko is notorious for her bad temper and she became embroiled in yet another post-match argument after losing in straight sets to the American in the second round.
In the wake of her victory, Townsend revealed to ESPN: 'She told me I have no class, no education and to see what happens when we get outside the US.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | August 28, 2025 2:15 AM |
'So, I'm looking forward to it: I beat her in Canada, outside the US, so let's see what else she has to say... it's competition, people get upset when they lose, some people say bad things.'
Shortly after, Ostapenko revealed on social media that she had been inundated with allegations of racism. The Latvian strongly denied the claims.
'Wow how many messages I received that I am a racist,' she wrote on Instagram. 'I was NEVER racist in my life and I respect all nations of people in the world, for me it doesn't matter where you come from.'
by Anonymous | reply 103 | August 28, 2025 2:16 AM |
In her post-match press conference, Townsend was then asked if she believed there was any racial undertones to Ostapenko's comments.
'That's something that you're going to have to ask her,' she said. 'I didn't take it in that way, but also that has been a stigma in our community of being not educated and all of the things when it's the furthest thing from the truth.'
The American continued: 'I can't speak on what her intentions were... saying I have no education and no class, I don't really take that personally, because I know that it's so far from the truth.... whether it had racial undertones or not, that's something she can speak on.'
Townsend added that she is 'very proud as a Black woman being out here representing myself and representing us and our culture. I make sure that I do everything that I can to be the best representation possible every time that I step on the court and even off the court.'
The two players clashed after a brief post-match handshake. Courtside microphones did not pick up much of what was said but Townsend could be heard repeatedly telling Ostapenko to 'take the L (loss)'.
The trigger for the rumpus appeared to be Townsend not giving the conventional apology when her shot clipped the top of the net at 5-5 in the first set.
'You have to say sorry,' said Ostapenko after the match. 'No I don't have to say sorry,' replied Townsend.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | August 28, 2025 2:17 AM |
The rest of the exchange was drowned out by the enthusiastic boos of the New York crowd. Townsend walked away from Ostapenko eventually and spent 30 seconds whipping up the crowd.
The Latvian soon took to social media to explain her outburst, claiming: 'I told my opponent she was very disrespectful as she had a net ball in a very deciding momen (sic) and didn’t say sorry, but her answer was that she doesn’t have to say sorry at all.'
Ostapenko continued: 'It was first time ever that this happened to me on tour... if she plays in her homeland it doesn’t mean that she can behave and do whatever she wants.'
The former French Open champion also appeared to take issue with Townsend choosing to start her warm-up at the net which, she claimed, 'is very disrespectful and against the rules of a tennis match.'
Townsend branded Ostapenko's explanation 'comical.' The American also said she didn't expect an apology and was 'not surprised at all' by her opponent's behavior.
'I've never been the one to back down from anything like that,' Townsend said. 'You're not going to insult me, especially after I carried myself a certain type of way with nothing but respect. If I show respect to you, I expect respect as well.
'So it was unfortunate, but it's something I can put on my TikTok,' she added with a laugh. 'I'm just not going to tolerate disrespect... if you have something to say or you feel some type of way, you say it to my face, and we can talk about it, we can hash it out.'
by Anonymous | reply 105 | August 28, 2025 2:18 AM |
Ostapenko has built a reputation for being among tennis' most combustible characters. Last year the 28-year-old made headlines after she refused to shake hands with rival Victoria Azarenka.
A few weeks earlier, Ostapenko blew up at an umpire, accusing the official of being 'blind'. 'You make so much mistakes. I never want you on my match again,' she said. 'You ruin my matches… I will never forget, never.'
Back in 2022, meanwhile, the Latvian was fined $10,000 for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' after knocking over her chair with a water bottle at Wimbledon.
And a year earlier, she clashed with Ajla Tomljanovic after the Australian accused Ostapenko of faking an injury.
'You know she's lying,' Tomljanovic told the umpire. 'If you think I'm faking it, you can talk with the physio,' Ostapenko replied. 'Your behavior is terrible. You have zero respect.' The Latvian then branded her opponent 'the worst player on tour.'
by Anonymous | reply 106 | August 28, 2025 2:19 AM |
Daniil Medvedev was fined $42,500 by the U.S. Open for his first-round meltdown in his loss to France’s Benjamin Bonzi.
That penalty represents more than a third the $110,000 tournament prize money won by Medvedev, who also appeared to make an obscene gesture during the match.

by Anonymous | reply 116 | August 28, 2025 3:50 AM |
1. I can believe that Peppa had racist intent to in going after TT - either genuinely or simply performatively to get under her skin.
2. There is a not-crazy defense to accusations of racism. Simply, that Peppa has started shit with all sorts of players, usually not black, as well umpires.
Is she bitter that TT beat her in a Slam doubles final and now again in singles?

I feel the same about Shelton. At first his enthusiasm seemed all in good fun, and I coined Mopsy for his look and energy back then. But recently it's gotten too close to a douchebro, brain-dead, generic ESPN kind of smug + Trinity Rodman tats. Nope.

Apart from my boy, Foki, imploding and Comesańa losing - albeit valiantly and with a smile on his face; it was a reasonable day for me:
Carlitos, Bonzi, Darderi, and Legz+,winning, and always good to see Mannarino go an unexpected run at a slam.
Delighted to see Rune and the over-hyped Fonseca out early.

by Anonymous | reply 125 | August 28, 2025 6:58 AM |
Who is the homophobe that lost yesterday and what’s the backstory on said homophobia?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | August 28, 2025 11:22 AM |
R126 It's Holger Rune. When he was 18, he was heard to refer to someone - not clear as to whether it was to his opponent (Tomas Etcheverry) or himself (as Rune claimed) - as a 'faggot ass', and also called out "Allez, faggot!" in the same match.
Opinion on here divides - more or less - as follows:
- some are adamant that he's an unrepentant homophobe
- some believe that it was just a youthful in-the-moment throwaway comments, and that people should move on
- some believe that it's possible he's a homophobe, but that's just one facet of his brattish, obnoxious personality and general awfulness.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | August 28, 2025 1:08 PM |
The ATP believed, after review of the incident, that Rune broke the code of ATP conduct. Accordingly they fined him 24% of his winnings from the Challenger event where he gave us a preview of his putridity.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | August 28, 2025 1:46 PM |
While Ostapenko has always been low class in her interactions with white players , her language towards TT had undertones of racism. It was a cheap old racist shot.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | August 28, 2025 2:28 PM |
TT didn’t raise that as an issue. She put it back on the Latvian Lovehandler—where it belongs.

His tennis is unrecognizable, lacking ideas to return to being the player firmly positioned among the best and an aspirant to everything, and his attitude towards himself and opponents is increasingly incomprehensible.

The most delicious thing about FAA's win tonight was hearing idiotic Robbie Koenig and his sidekick nattering on in adulation of Zverev while dumping on Felix through the second set, and then having to eat their words in dumbfounded STFU from the second-set tiebreak through match point. Almost as nauseating as the McEnroes and so satisfying when they have to eat crow.
by Anonymous | reply 375 | August 31, 2025 6:06 AM |
Koenig is nauseating - always egging on the 'bad boys ' because apparently they're 'entertaining'. I was actually surprised when he really laid into Meddy at the end of the Bonzi match.
And he constantly repeats the most annoying phrases:
"Consistency, thy name is...." "Shut the front door!"
There are several others.

Andrey Rublev isn’t a fan of being regulated on how he talks to himself on the court.
The world No. 15 Russian tennis player received a $3,000 fine for using foul language during his second-round match at the U.S Open this week.
Before punching his ticket into the round of 16 on Saturday, he weighed in on whether the fine for cursing is fair across the sport.
by Anonymous | reply 385 | August 31, 2025 4:48 PM |
“Depends. Depends on the situation. When you are talking to yourself in a bad way, it’s my decision how I do it,” Rublev said. “You cannot, in my opinion, you cannot charge for this. If you talk to the referee or umpire with bad words, yes, like when you do it towards someone or you scream on all courts, yes, obviously. But when you talk to yourself, it’s your decision how you talk. It doesn’t matter even if the umpire hears what you are saying or not for this. I don’t think so.
“At the end of the day, in all the sports, it’s normal. It doesn’t matter what sport you take, in the crucial moments, it happens. It’s sports. It’s life. The same with every person outside in life in crucial moments, in stressful moments. I don’t believe all of us are super holy and never say bad words in the crucial moments. It’s the same thing…like I said if you doing it towards someone or you’re doing it too much openly, yes, but with yourself, it’s your decision how you talk.”

Borna gave an interview to the Croatian press about the state of his game.
He has some injuries that he doesn’t want to talk about but isn’t optimistic about getting past them, and he has no desire to play a long career, especially if he’s not competitive.
Sounds like he may not be around much longer.

Because he's young and rich and famous so he has to maximize his whoring around potential.
Granted, when he's older, he'll still be rich and can probably pull a lot of women - directly or just pay for it by being a sugar daddy.

Pissy Pole ponies up apology—
Piotr Szczerek, the man who took the hat from a child at the Kamil Majchrzak U.S. Open match, apologized for his actions & says he plans to support children’s initiatives moving forward:
“I would like to unequivocally apologize to the boy who was harmed, his family, as well as to all the fans and to the player himself. reflexively.
I made a serious mistake. In the emotions of the moment, in the joy of the crowd after the victory, I was convinced that the tennis player was handing the cap in my direction for my sons, who had earlier asked for autographs. This mistaken belief caused me to reach out reflexively.
Today I know that I did something which appeared to be deliberately taking a souvenir away from a child. That was not my intention, but this does not change the fact that I hurt the boy and disappointed the fans. The cap has been handed over to the boy, and apologies have been made to the family. I hope that at least in part I have repaired the harm caused.
For years, together with my wife, I have been engaged in helping children and young athletes, but this situation has shown me that a single moment of inattention can undo years of work and support. This is for me a painful but necessary lesson in humility. That is why I will now engage even more actively in initiatives supporting children and young people, as well as in actions against violence and hate.
I believe that only through deeds can I rebuild the trust that has been lost. Once again, I apologize to all those I have let down.”

by Anonymous | reply 507 | September 1, 2025 9:12 PM |
The thorough ass-licking that ESPN performs at every mention of Coco is bizarre.
I'm willing to ascribe it to nerves or whatever, but Osaka took her to the woodshed. Coco's FH was atrocious. It's like she the progress she made on her serve she took from her FH. And she even started missing BHs, which is her best shot. Completely outclassed today.

Venus serving Lion King realness with her kit.
by Anonymous | reply 510 | September 1, 2025 9:23 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 511 | September 1, 2025 9:27 PM |
Brad G helped Coco's forehand which led to a GS. Coco played super defense at RG = GS. Coco hired a tech coach to help with her serve and while her serve was much better this time around, she lost yhe match. Coco needs to go back to basics.

I'm a causal....and I love watching Venus & Leyla play together! Seeing players smile & have FUN on the court together is FUN to watch! Because, at the most basic level, sports are supposed to be FUN & bring you joy! They are GAMES. If you're not having FUN while playing a sport, you're doing it wrong -- or for the wrong reasons.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | September 2, 2025 2:18 AM |

R549 tell this to IGA and Jannik. They are the only 2 top players who don't appear to be having fun out there/happy when out there, particularly Iga, the intensity is overwhelming.
Iga plays like her happiness depends on her winning so she never appears happy or giving off joyful vibes when playing. I know not everyone can be Carlos. Heck, even the devil himself Novaxx plays with joy..

If women want to be paid the same as men in tennis, they need to start playing best of 5 sets. If they don't, reduce prize money by 33 percent.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | September 2, 2025 2:51 AM |
Fernandez is a perfect partner for Venus - their games compliment each other. Venus still has a pretty good serve and great groundstrokes if she's not reaching (which she has to do less of in doubles). She's NOT serving and volleying (did she ever S&V a lot?), so Fernandez being super active and mobile and willing to poach at the net is key. And as they've gotten deeper, Venus' volleying has got better. Older tennis players don't lose their skills, they lose their movement. If a less mobile player pairs with a very mobile player who can get balls that the less mobile player can't, they can do well.

"It's still early enough for Jannik to hit the town and find a model to fuck."
I love that robotic, little-personality-on-court Sinner is quietly maximizing his fuck potential and hooking up with multiple models. Few people have the status to sleep with a lot of hot/beautiful people - whether it's based on fame, money, and/or being good looking themselves. Why wouldn't you?

"If women want to be paid the same as men in tennis, they need to start playing best of 5 sets. If they don't, reduce prize money by 33 percent."
It's a BS argument. It's "prize money" - money for advancing to a certain stage of the tournament or winning. It's not hourly rate pay for amount of time played. The point has been made ad nauseam and it's never gotten any traction. First, the Slams don't want to do it because it would change the entire two-week structure of a Slam which would in turn change the entire yearly calendar. Second, it's not like women are refusing. I know Sabalenka said something about not wanting to play best of five, but still, if they were told "you have to play best of five or not earn the same amount of money" I'm sure the women would get quickly on board. But again, the Slams don't want to change it.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | September 2, 2025 4:14 AM |
Agree - watching Venus and Leylah has made me like Leylah a whole lot more. I actively disliked her before.
I’m happy Amanda is trying to be more positive (per MJ and Rennae) but watching her still seems like watching a nervous breakdown in slow motion.
