Obama had a lot going for him the first time he was elected. The public was fed up with Dubya’s Iraq debacle and panicking over the 2008 financial crisis. The fact that he was wildly charismatic with a broadly unifying message that transcended party lines didn’t hurt either.
But Obama’s real secret weapon was that he seemingly appeared out of nowhere.
All of the current, nationally-recognized Democratic front runners have heavy political baggage; they have loudly supported policies the American electorate clearly rejected in the last election and they consistently rely on alarmist and divisive rhetoric to stay relevant. If the Democrats want to stand a chance in 2028, they will get behind a youngish, relatively unknown candidate who can project the same kind of credibility and concern for all Americans that Barack Obama did.
