Bed Bath & Beyond says it won’t open stores in California: ‘Overregulated, expensive and risky’
“California has created one of the most overregulated, expensive and risky environments for businesses in America,” he said in a press release.
“The result? Higher taxes, higher fees, higher wages that many businesses simply cannot sustain, and endless regulations that strangle growth.”
The beleaguered chain has launched a return to retail after filing for bankruptcy and closing hundreds of stores just two years ago.
It cited a commitment to shareholders and “common sense” business practices as its reasoning for offering only e-commerce and delivery services in California.
Lemonis argued that California’s strict regulations would force Bed Bath & Beyond to inflate prices in brick-and-mortar stores and make it impossible for them to guarantee long-term employment.
In particular, he took aim at intense worker protections like California’s minimum wage hike – as high as $20 for the fast-food industry – arguing that businesses can’t handle the costs.
A spokesperson for California Gov. Gavin Newsom clapped back: “Like most Americans, we thought Bed Bath & Beyond no longer existed.”

How odd -when I Google “New Store Openings in California,” I find that multiple national retailers, like Costco, Trader Joes, Ikea, Nordstrom Rack, Target and REI are in the process of opening new locations in California.
Also-I live in Daly City, just next to socialist San Francisco, and the former Bed Bath and Beyond near me is becoming a Home Goods-it’s an expansion, not a relocation.
Perhaps Bed Bath and Beyond, and their shitty product line, is the problem.

Everything he said may be true....but in the end I would imagine that those negatives would be offset by having a clientele with money to spend. There's lots of money in California.

If you can’t run a business without taking advantage of your staff, then you can’t run a business in California. Go figure.

So California is saying that BB&G’s whining is from the GREAT BEYOND part of their name.

Now that Newsom's staff is attacking Trump, expect more and more of these "California is a shithole" messages from Trump's asskissjng allies in American business.

Here's more of Newsom's response: "Like most Americans, we thought Bed, Bath & Beyond no longer existed -- after their bankruptcy & closure of every store. We wish them well as they seek to become relevant again as they try to open a 2nd store."

BB&B actually does no longer exist. Overstock.com, a completely unrelated company, purchased the rights to the name in bankruptcy and is using it to brand the new stores. They have absolutely no connection to the pre-bankruptch BB&B chain other than the name.

This is not the Bed Bath and Beyond that we patronized for decades, where we bought linens and home decorating items and kitchen ware, That store is long gone. Never to return again.
This is overstock.com which bought the rights to the Bed Bath and Beyond name when BB&B went bankrupt.
As r12 explained, there is absolutely no connection between the two stores other than they're using the same name.

So they don’t want to pay their employees living wages?

I live in San Francisco. I don't want to patronize any store or restaurant that doesn't pay their workers at least $20/hour. If you can't afford to pay your workers a reasonable wage, your business model doesn't work.

Good point, R10. That's what's underneath this kind of shit (and it's good to be reminded).

Overregulated and expensive = you have to pay a living wage and you can't chain workers to their stations...

They have no stores. They are not opening any stores. Not in California or in any other state. The purpose of this twat’s “press release” eludes me. I suppose maybe the purpose was just to be a twat.

Maybe the twat just wanted to garner favor from Trump by dissing California?

Then expect to pay 6x the price you do now.
