Average Cost for Washing Machine Repair

My washing machine stopped spinning last week.

I have never had to call an appliance repairman before, and I am relatively new in town.

Called three people. One gave me a quote of $95 plus any parts. One was $200 plus parts, and the last was $150.

No idea how much things like this should cost. A guy at work told me it is usually a pretty easy fix.

Of course, none of them have stepped up to actually show up at my house. I'm apparently at their mercy, time-wise.

What have you paid for washing machine repair??

by Anonymousreply 24August 20, 2025 7:28 PM

Go with the mid-range. $95 guy probably cuts corners and rushes through the job to get the the next one. $200 guy is overcharging you at least slightly. In comparison $150 guy seems reasonable.

Yes I'm talking out of my ass but that's what I'd do.

OP, did you ask neighbors/friends/co-workers for recommendations?

by Anonymousreply 1August 20, 2025 2:22 PM

Pick the sexiest one stupid.

by Anonymousreply 2August 20, 2025 2:24 PM

OP, you obviously have internet access. Ask ChatGPT. And you can even ask it to make you a top 10 list of repairmen in the area with any qualifications you like "Make me a list of repairmen in the area noted for their affordability and good service."

by Anonymousreply 3August 20, 2025 2:27 PM

You can pay with Nature's Credit Card.

by Anonymousreply 4August 20, 2025 2:29 PM

Ignore the AI troll at R3. They're everywhere pushing it now. Probably a bot.

Ask your neighbors for recommendations.

by Anonymousreply 5August 20, 2025 2:32 PM

Type in your brand name and type (e.g. top loader) and the problem (won’t spin) in YouTube. You’ll get results. I’ll tell you how to do it yourself.

by Anonymousreply 6August 20, 2025 2:35 PM

OP, excuse my ignorance, but I don't understand your story. You mean you called one to come out, he gave you on the phone an estimate of $95 plus parts, you said "OK," and he never gave a day or time and never showed up so rather than to call him again and ask when he was coming out you called #2 (etc. etc.)? Or, seeking info, you called three different places for estimates on the same day, which they all supplied, and you assumed by just asking for an estimate that they would come out even though you [italic]didn't[/italic] then specifically OK it and actually ask any of them to come out?

Normally the process is: Call (or make online contact) the place, tell them the problem, they supply a rough estimate, you say "That's fine, when's the soonest you can be here?", they give a day and time, when the day and time come you get a call "Sorry, we're running late, see you later this afternoon," they show up and it finally gets fixed.

Sometimes if you have an exotic brand of machine (say, European) they might need to order the part, which can take a week or so to arrive, in which case they call you when they get it in (or you wait a reasonable time then call them and ask for the status of the order).

All of the costs quoted are reasonable, depending on particular circumstances.

General remark: Over the course of time it's beneficial to establish a relationship (no, I don't mean sexual) with a particular company or service person which/whom you always use, as if you're a dependable payer and pleasant to their employees you'll get preferential treatment (meaning they'll get to you sooner rather than later when possible, and artificially inflated prices and unnecessary extra charges will magically no longer happen to you).

I use Task Rabbit for appliance repair. Or any other similar app.

If you are on Facebook, find your neighborhood group and ask for recommendations or do a search in the group.

by Anonymousreply 9August 20, 2025 4:33 PM

Most techs aren't going to come to your house unless they get a service fee of $75-100, then it's hourly and parts from there.

If your machine is within its warranty period it may be worth repairing. If it's older than 5-6 years, it's a roll of the dice as to whether it should be fixed or replaced.

Is this an elaborate plot for a porn scene?

I paid $400 parts and labor to repair a three year old Maytag. The repair lasted about a month before refusing, once again, to spin the wet clothes. Repairman just read the manual and read error codes, ordered a part and put it in. He knew as much about actually fixing it as I did and he was one of their official Maytag repairmen. Trashed it for a GE that has been, so far, problem free.

Nextdoor is full of lunatics posting shame pictures of their neighbors not picking up after their dog. That said-when you have a question like this, you will get several recommendations.

by Anonymousreply 13August 20, 2025 4:54 PM

R12 That's a surprise to me - Maytag has a rep for great quality and GE does not.

If it's an old washer it's likely cheaper to fix and will last longer than anything put out in the last 10 years or so.

We recently had the same issue with our old machine (stopped spinning and no draining), found a highly recommended guy on "Next Door" (keyword search so no dog turd photos or OMG RUN FOR YOU LIVES ITS A COYOTE posts) and he came out, found the problem. Ordered the part and repaired it. The whole process cost $125.00.

My rule of thumb for many things: Always hire the person with the biggest cock. I’m always amazed how well this has worked for me.

by Anonymousreply 16August 20, 2025 5:17 PM

Your.^^^^ oh, dear on myself

.P.S. the washer is a GE Profile. Came with the house when we bought it 21 years ago. Going strong.

by Anonymousreply 17August 20, 2025 5:18 PM

DO NOT buy a Speed Queen if you are over 50 years old.

It will outlive you.

by Anonymousreply 18August 20, 2025 5:31 PM

OP, go on You Tube and find a video. Not necessarily because you will fix it, but because you want to know HOW they will fixit so they don't try to convince you you need major surgery. next Door is usually helpful for repair men. Oh. Always read the reviews. Yelp or Google. Most of the time repair men charge for just coming out. So no matter what is wrong, they will charge you 85-125 just to show up. Some will include the fee in their charges, others will charge you on top of the basic fee. You have labor and parts. Usually parts are cheap and labor is the big cost. Answer this question: Do you smell anything burning when you try to get it to work? If your problem is your motor get a new washer.

by Anonymousreply 19August 20, 2025 5:44 PM

That’s why I bought the Maytag R14. Was very disappointed, but I don’t think any of these machines are from the original manufacturers.

by Anonymousreply 20August 20, 2025 5:59 PM

OP Here.

Like I said, I am pretty new in town, so I don't know many people.

I called the first people on the list in a Google search and got estimates,

I did look up the YouTube video and was convinced I could do the repair myself easily. I ordered the part ($25 on Amazon) and gave it a go.

Didn't work.

R21, If you started this thread 5 hours ago, how did you get a part from Amazon so quickly?

by Anonymousreply 22August 20, 2025 7:24 PM

R13 True. It's the only thing NextDoor is good for.......

You just have to bypass the seventeen "There's a person on my street, existing and breathing, should I call the police?" threads.

by Anonymousreply 23August 20, 2025 7:26 PM

R22 I'm not OP but Amazon does have same day delivery for somethings. However. I would have just gne to Lowes or Home Depot. Whatever. it's possible the OP sent for the part last night after he watched You Tube.
