Fruit Flies
Oh, Datalounge! You’ve got to help me! I have been infiltrated with fruit flies and I am having guests over this afternoon for tea and light refreshments. I’m trying to trap them in apple cider vinegar under Saran Wrap and it’s not working.
Oh, the shame! The shame of it all!

dont bother with saran wrap. you put a splash of apple cider vinegar in some old wine, beer or water with some fruit juice. you put just a few drops, not a big squirt, of dish soap. stir. you dont want too much soap! you dont want stop foam. if you use too much soap it cuts the aroma. then put it in shallow bowls so the fumes attract the flies. you need more than on location. they are finicky. most of them will drown in one of the bowls even though they all contain the same death potion. if you only put out one bowl in one location it wont be as effective.

OP I discovered there were these tiny things similar to fruit flies but it was coming from the drain. I put baking soda in the drains and then vinegar and then flushed it out quickly with a kettle of boiling water. I have spray bottles of Clorox and Lysol cleaning liquid, and I just sprayed around t he drain with that and it solved the problem. I also chased the fuckers with the spray bottle of liquid cleaner and it killed them instantly. And please put away any fruit you have out in the open. Bananas as they ripen, increase in sugar content and the little fuckers are drawn to it.

also the wine or beer shouldn't be too fresh or too old. there is an effective spot. thats why some watered down fruit juice (grape, apple) and a splash of apple cider vinegar can be the best. the apple cider add the attractive aroma.

If you have your windows open, the fruit fly trap is probably just drawing more of them in from outside. Most screens aren't tight enough mesh to stop fruit flies and while you are trying to attract the ones already in the house, more are coming in from the outside because of the trap.

Liberally spray fly spray and throw out the rotten fruit which is attracting the fruit flies OP. Sheesh.
Then do what R5 suggests.

Move your tea to another date or venue, and get out the fogger. Throw away all your produce and clean out the drains.

It's a good idea to do this to your drains once a month, fruit flies or not.

Cider vinegar traps really work but there's no quick fix for a drosophilia infestation. Just make sure your house is scrupulously clean including your trash bins. Also smash every one of the little feckers as soon as you see them. You can wash your hands afterwards.

Put about .25 inches of brandy in a small cup. The 6 or 8oz Solo cups work well (not the bigger ones). Seal with a layer of plastic wrap pulled tightly over the opening of the cup, and fix it to the cup with a rubber band. Poke holes in the top that are approximately the same size or just larger than the flies using a very sharp pencil or cake tester. If the holes are too small or too large, it won't be as effective. Place the cup near the area where you see the most flies and wait a day or two.
In my experience, this kills enormous numbers of these pests and pretty much clears up the problem. Something about brandy (plain, not anything flavored) worked better than any of the vinegar options many people recommend, at least for me.

I've noticed they like to breed in my indoor potted plants, both violets and orchids. So make sure those have good drainage and place them outside for a while if you notice flies coming out when you're watering them.

R16 I had to get rid of my indoor potted plants for that very reason. Also use that Lysol spray cleaner and wipe down your tile and backsplash in the kitchen as well as counter tops. And clean up and vacuum where ever food is consumed. And yes. Smash them...or spray them.
