Last Good Barbra Streisand Album?

To go over almost the last 25 years of her career, what was Barbra’s last good studio album?

My vote goes to “Love is the Answer”.

"The Way We Were" 1974

I Can Get It for You Wholesale, 1962.

" My Name is Barbra." 1965

I voted for "Love Is the Answer," but in my opinion, you could stop with "The Concert" from 1994.

Love Is The Answer stands above the other choices, it had that excellent cover of Here’s To Life and a new refreshing sense of intimacy and age-related imperfection in her voice, and the production was superb. Otherwise “meh” to the lot of it.

The Broadway Album, even though she left me out of “Ladies Who Lunch.”

Her “Stoney End” album. Also loved her first really contemporary music-focused one from a couple years before that: “What About Today?”

Agree with everything you posted r6: And blessedly free of shlocky overblown arrangements she relies on.

She never should have fallen out with Peter Matz. He was the arranger who brought out the best in her.

I was so hoping "Love Is The Answer' would have led to other intimate jazz combo recordings from her, but she retreated back to the tidal waves of strings....

I still say Night of My Life should have been the first single from Guilty Pleasures. Instead of an anemic ballad that sucked out any interest in it.

R9 She would have really connected to a younger audience had she kept going that route.

I was really disappointed in “What Matters Most” and after. It’s furniture store music.

Guilty

The last time she really sang with full voice was "Back to Broadway." The last listenable studio album of non-standards was "Til I Loved You."

The disco one.

The Second Barbra Streisand Album

A Happening in Central Park

I mean I love her obviously but none of the albums in the OP’s poll do it for me

by Anonymousreply 15August 20, 2025 6:43 AM

Her voice is gone. Encore is painful to listen to.

Yeah, r11: "What Matters Most" was a heartbreaker for me, too. "Love Is The Answer" was SO refreshing. She went back to her roots as "An actress who sings". But you could tell she was uncomfortable with totally sparse production as she had that back-up CD with added orchestra.

With "What Matters Most" it was back to the Same Old Shit.
