LA Times columnist begs Los Angeles to pull out of hosting the 2028 Olympics

A Los Angeles Times columnist urged the city of L.A. to abandon the 2028 Olympics over concerns about Donald Trump’s involvement.

In a new column for the outlet, Gustavo Arellano lamented that Trump will be heading the task force in charge of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and warned the president would use the spectacle and the city for his own agenda.

"That’s why L.A. needs to withdraw from hosting the Olympics — the sooner the better," Arellano wrote.

Arellano said when Los Angeles 2028, the group tasked with organizing the Olympics in the city, chair Casey Wasserman announced Trump as head of the task force, it was like him offering the city a "giant whoopi cushion."

The columnist went on to trash other top officials from the Trump administration who were present at the announcement.

"On Trump’s right was a rash of L.A. haters, some of whom played a prominent role in Southern California’s summer of deportations, including Vice President JD Vance and Department of Homeland Security head Kristi Noem," he wrote. "Not present, but hailed by Trump during the presser as an ‘MVP candidate,’ was Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who has made it his life’s mission to crush the multicultural metropolis that birthed him."

Wasserman’s praise for Trump was, according to Arellano, nothing short of groveling.

"I haven’t seen such a suck-up since the last time I vacuumed my dad’s pool," he wrote. "And you definitely don’t entrust kiss a-- like Wasserman — I’m still not sure what he did to deserve his powerful LA28 gig, except being the grandson of the late Hollywood mogul Lew Wasserman — with calming down someone like Trump."

Arellano noted how the federal government was always going to be involved with hosting the Olympic Games but said that the fact that Trump is part of it makes it problematic.

"The federal government was always going to play a role in providing security for the 2028 Olympics, just as it has for previous Games in the U.S. But Trump, as the head of the task force, now gets to personally oversee our own siege," he wrote. "With the Games happening in a presidential election year, Trump would love nothing more than to traipse around an L.A. radically transformed by his deportation blitzkrieg to proclaim his mission accomplished and broadcast his conquest to the world."

He also warned that Trump would use the next three years of Olympics prep to "humiliate blue L.A. at every chance."

Arellano asked readers if they wanted to give Trump and his "goon squad" more opportunities to make life "miserable" in Los Angeles.

He said he'd rather forego the city hosting the games because "I don’t want my money going toward something that Trump will use to bolster his noxious legacy. I’m not going to cheer on Wasserman as he chums up Trump while la migra continues to terrorize L.A., possibly for months, if not years."

"La Migra" is a Spanish language term, often used in slang, that refers to U.S. immigration enforcement agencies, primarily U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Border Patrol.

"I don’t want to support an event where footage of an occupied L.A. might be as front and center as the Coliseum or badminton. What true Angeleno would?" he added.

The 2028 Summer Olympics will be held July 14 to 30. L.A. was announced as the host city in 2017.

I'm sure businesses will love that suggestion...

by Anonymousreply 2August 19, 2025 10:19 PM

Haha, I love how he ripped them all a new fucking ASSHOLE!!

This guy Arellano should run for office.

We need fighters like him, on the Democratic side.

by Anonymousreply 3August 19, 2025 10:22 PM

Isn't common knowledge The International Olympic Committee organises the games. There is a Charter to follow. The Orange Oaf will be too busy fighting off dementia and swollen ankles by then surely?

by Anonymousreply 4August 19, 2025 10:23 PM

Trump will be 82, he'll be more feeble then his now if he's still alive.

by Anonymousreply 5August 19, 2025 10:39 PM

Hopefully Trump will be a decomposing non-issue by that time.

by Anonymousreply 6August 19, 2025 10:44 PM

Lumpy wants it to be his 1936 Berlin Olympics.

by Anonymousreply 7August 19, 2025 11:06 PM

[quote]This guy Arellano should run for office.

He used to write a very funny column for alt-weeklies titled "Ask a Mexican," which was exactly what it sounded like.

by Anonymousreply 8August 19, 2025 11:11 PM

He's a great columnist & I agree he should be in political office (though I wouldn't wish that fate on anyone I respect as I do him).

by Anonymousreply 9August 19, 2025 11:18 PM

How can it not be a total disaster? Every team of brown athletes will either be forbidden entry into the U.S. at all, hounded by ICE, and/or stripped of any gold medals they may win and accused of cheating on the orders of Trump.

by Anonymousreply 10August 19, 2025 11:21 PM

Countdown to Arellano being sacked by the fascist-adjacent LA Times owner...

by Anonymousreply 11August 19, 2025 11:23 PM

I went into the article doubting it, but damn it's going to be a shitshow

by Anonymousreply 12August 19, 2025 11:34 PM

To all foreign fans - do NOT travel to the US for the Olympics or World Cup ( travel to Canada or Mexico for the WC); watch on tv. To all domestic fans -avoid both and if asked, blame Trump. If you do go, make sure you go to the Olympics and loudly boo Trump. Let him be humiliated on tv to a world audience.

by Anonymousreply 13August 20, 2025 12:13 AM

At least we got a great and innovative, if fascist, documentary out of 1936 Berlin.

by Anonymousreply 14August 20, 2025 12:14 AM

Regardless, unless fortunate intervenes, he will open the games. Typically a brief, respectful statement given by everyone from Brezhnev to Queen Elizabeth. I'm sure he'll rise to the occasion.

by Anonymousreply 15August 20, 2025 12:16 AM

They should pull out.

Fred should have done so in 1945.

by Anonymousreply 16August 20, 2025 12:18 AM

It would nice if there were public support to boycott it -- especially with respect to volunteers, without whom no Olympics will function.

by Anonymousreply 17August 20, 2025 12:21 AM

[quote]Trump will be 82, he'll be more feeble then his now if he's still alive.

This hardly matters if people like JD Vance (who might well be campaigning at that point) or Kristi Noem or Stephen Miller have free rein to run the show. They'll do whatever they think he wants.

by Anonymousreply 18August 20, 2025 12:27 AM

I hope athletes and tourists both boycott the Olmpics. The only thing in the world more corrupt than the Trump Organization is the IOC, so I really don't care if the '28 Olympics are a bust.

It was a complete travesty that this draft dodging mother fucker got to preside over the 75th anniversary of D-Day., and he'll preside over the 250th annjversary of the US. I would hate to see him preside over another historical event.

by Anonymousreply 19August 20, 2025 12:28 AM

r13, we'll remove that booing sound from the audio.

by Anonymousreply 20August 20, 2025 1:40 AM

I just googled Wasserstein and the first thing that comes up is this article from last year - It's about him being a rich asshole to women, but there's one sentence that may explain his relationship with trump

Wasserman, a prominent Democratic Party donor who was once photographed with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein

All roads lead back to Epstein

LA Olympics boss Casey Wasserman accused of being serial adulterer who ‘love bombed’ underlings: report

A Hollywood mogul who has been tapped to head the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles is a serial adulterer with a “chronic condition of sleeping with people who work for him,” according to a bombshell report.

Casey Wasserman, the 50-year-old CEO of Wasserman Media Group, “love bombed” his mistresses with expensive gifts, including Louboutin shoes, La Perla lingerie, handbags, and Range Rovers, sources told DailyMail.com.

Wasserman, a prominent Democratic Party donor who was once photographed with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is alleged to have promised his mistresses that he would leave his wife for them — only for him to then dump them. “When he dumped me I was in shock and disbelief that he could go from 100 to zero in just hours,” one of the alleged former lovers told DailyMail.com. “I truly think he underestimates the pain and long-term damage he causes women like me who believed him.”

At first I read the headline and was intrigued. But the more I thought about it, I just don't give a shit. The Olympics do nothing for me anymore. I used to LOVE watching. Now it just doesn't hold any interest for me. If they were never held again, I wouldn't care.

Continued

Wasserman is the son of the late movie mogul and talent agent Lew Wasserman. His firm represents star athletes and musical acts such as Coldplay and Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton.

In late June, he hosted a lavish 50th birthday bash with A-list guests from the world of politics including Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, former President Bill Clinton; former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. The rock band Imagine Dragons were the main act at the Santa Monica party, according to DailyMail.com.

He separated from his wife, Laura Ziffren, in 2021 after more than 20 years of marriage. She filed for divorce soon after. The couple share two children. In 2006, five years after Wasserman wed Ziffren and shortly after she gave birth to their second child, he reportedly began an affair with his assistant.

Wasserman is also alleged to have gotten involved with his secretary, Patricia Feau, who currently pulls down a salary of $350,000 while working for LA 2028, the nonprofit helping to organize the Summer Games in four years, according to DailyMail.com. Feau, 52, who is married with two children, has denied having an affair with Wasserman, according to the report. “It is not true. I did not have an affair with Casey Wasserman,” Feau told DailyMail.com.

His current girlfriend, 43-year-old Jenny Chandler, was a flight attendant on his private Gulfstream G550 jet when they began their romance a decade ago, the news site reported. In March 2021, Chandler is reported to have sent Wasserman’s wife an email confessing the affair. “Him and I have been together for 7 years which he’s lied to you about,” the email obtained by DailyMail.com read. “He f–ked me in your bed at Redford. And also robin. And also Cancun in the house. You should know all he’s done to you. Multiple times on the plane with you in the back.”

DailyMail.com also published a photograph showing Wasserman with Epstein and convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell in front of the disgraced financier’s private jet dubbed “Lolita Express.”

The Post has sought comment from Wasserman, Ziffren, Chandler, Feau and LA 2028. In May of last year, Wasserman took Chandler to the Met Gala, where they were photographed together. The two have also been seen at this year’s Met Gala and the Golden Globe Awards. Since reportedly hooking up with Wasserman, Chandler quit her job as a flight attendant to become a full-time artist. She is also reported to have upgraded her lifestyle that now includes extravagant parties, a stylist and other perks, according to DailyMail.com.

Before meeting Chandler, Wasserman is said to have had a brief fling with Tammi McDermott, a flight attendant who worked on corporate jets. Sources told DailyMail.com that McDermott had a casual affair with Wasserman, which included a handful of trysts. Those who observed Wasserman up close said it was evident when he would be cheating and with whom, according to the report. “The high heels, the crazy expensive shoes and purses, and the little outfits at work. That’s when you knew they were f–king,” a source told DailyMail.com. “And he always buys the girls Range Rovers. He’s got a thing about shoes and cars.” Another source told told the news site that Wasserman was “super lavish with gifts.”

Ziffren got wind of his serial cheating after noticing his underlings sporting the same handbags and clothing that she would wear. “Part of how Laura would find out about affairs is she’d see women with her same handbag, her same clothes, the same car, because he would just buy the same stuff for everybody,” a source told DailyMail.com.

The #1 all time most asked question he got was, "Why Do Mexicans Swim in the Ocean in Their Jeans?"

by Anonymousreply 25August 20, 2025 2:00 AM

From a Daily Mail article.

Wasserman has been tied to late billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and his infamous 'Lolita Express' private plane.

Flight logs from Epstein's jet, which the financier allegedly used to traffic underage women for sex, show the Wassermans flew with him, Clinton, Kevin Spacey, and Chris Tucker to Africa for an HIV charity event in 2002.

DailyMail.com obtained an undated photograph of Wasserman in front of a plane with Epstein and his girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving 20 years in prison for sex trafficking children.

There is no suggestion Wasserman took part in any of Epstein's or Maxwell's crimes, and the Africa trip took place before the criminal investigation into their sex trafficking began. But Wasserman's links to Epstein's circle continued even after allegations emerged of the financier's sex abuse of children.

After New York federal prosecutors reopened their investigation into Epstein in 2019, Maxwell took part in a charity car rally which Wasserman's wife helped organize. Ziffren sits on the board of Cash & Rocket, which organized a rally for women including Paris Hilton and Topshop heiress Chloe Green to drive a caravan of luxury cars from London to Monte Carlo in June 2019, where they then held a masked ball. Maxwell's participation in the annual rally was her last public appearance before she went into hiding. She was eventually arrested in July 2020.

As well as helping organize the event, Ziffren also drove in that year's cross-Europe rally. When Vanity Fair reported Maxwell took part in the Cash & Rocket event, the organization scrubbed her photos from its website and said she had been invited by one of the drivers, not the rally itself.

Here's the photo of Wasserman, epstein and maxwell. It was when he was much younger, but they are in front of epstein's Lolita Express

Each host nation is allowed to install a sport for that Olympics. Trump will usurp the committee and install the Big Mac eating 100 meter dash in which contestants must stop every 10 meters and consume a Big Mac. He will win gold for that event and also take the silver and bronze.

by Anonymousreply 33August 20, 2025 4:37 AM

Will the rooms in the Olympic Village be as as ostentatious as the white house? Will he expect credit or a Nobel prize for all that gilt?
