Rhode Island Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Hogan Flanagan was arrested by Newport Police for willful trespassing at the Clarke Cooke House restaurant. She and a friend were asked to leave the restaurant and refused, leading to the police being called. Bodycam footage shows Flanagan repeatedly asking officers to turn off their body cameras and invoking her position as a prosecutor during the arrest. She also stated, "Buddy, you're going to regret this," according to multiple news sources.

What did this drunk and disorderly individual do in the restaurant to get herself kicked out?

I'm in RI and this has been all over the news. There are so many 'facts' being tossed around, it's unbelievable.

First, it's being rumored that she and her friend wanted to be on 'Real Housewives of RI' (currently fiming) and heard they were filming in the restaurant the other night - so they went there to drink and tried to join them. Neither the restaurant nor the Bravo production company will comment.

Second, as I write this, she has yet to be arrested and charged. She was detained and removed from the property (as was her friend). But she has not been formally arrested, and the restaurant is not pressing charges. Since she was not arrested, she most likely will keep her job as an AG and get a reprimand / punishment for being a public nuisance. But the AG needs to play this very carefully - the public wants her fired (arrested or not). He's rumored to be running for Governor next year (his term limit is up as AG). If he plays by the rules and gives her a slap on the wrist, he's screwed. If he fires her, his opponents will use it to their advantage and say he did it for political gains. He's screwed either way and will probably lose in the primary in March.

As an aside - The Clarke Cookhouse is one of the most over-rated restaurants in Newport, attracting mostly visitors / tourists. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if RH was filming there. Occasionally, you will see Newport residents Judge Judy, Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno dining there (so it's been reported) but usually off-season , not summer.

A woman who was our Student Body President in high school became a magistrate judge in some podunk town.

She got arrested for basically wallowing on the ground in public and the doing the “you bout to find out who I am!” routine when cops questioned her. There’s a newspaper article and everything!

Come to think of it, if I made a list of the top 20 or so “most successful” kids I went to high school with (doctors and lawyers), about half have been arrested for public drunkenness, or driving into a wall, or faced professional discipline for drinking on the job. One kid who was an alcoholic killed himself shortly after finishing medical school.

“He said that Flanagan has not been placed on leave, but that a "strong sanction" would be coming, including a "suspension without pay" if he decides to retain her with the office.

“ "Look, she's put me in a bad position. She's embarrassed herself, humiliated herself, treated the Newport Police Department horribly," Neronha said during the Aug. 19 interview on WPRO. "She is going to take some steps to try to address that in the next day or so."

“While he did not say what the "steps" would entail, he did say an apology to the Newport Police Department was "clearly necessary, and she understands that."

“Neronha said Flanagan would "take responsibility for her conduct, and then we'll go from there," adding that he hadn't yet made any decisions regarding discipline.

"It was inexcusable behavior," he said. "She knows better. ... I've got 110 lawyers. She embarrassed all of them, in a sense."

“He said that he had Flanagan watch the body camera footage herself, take a few days and then come back to him with what she thought she needed to do to "make this right."

There is (or was) a nightclub in the basement of the Clarke Cooke House called The Candy Store which we like to joke about because it’s such a dumb name.
