It is bad. It’s often being used by people who themselves are abusive They are downvoting people who challenge their name calling or bigoted posts. The best solution is not to temporarily ban anyone except in the most extreme cases.

I'm shocked that no one FF'd me to get me suspended for posting this.

I'm not saying no one should ever be suspended or banned. I'm just saying it's clear that a few people have discovered that by giving a DL'er multiple FFs, they get banned automatically.

I'm suggesting do away with automatic bans that aren't vetted by a person.

In general, there doesn't seem to be any need for it. Only if someone is being really offensive (e.g., using slurs) or posting so repetitively that it interferes with the board's function, should anyone be blocked.

To the extent people are just posting stupidity or just being offensive, the board can police itself. We can call people out for that. Yet, you see people rooting for people who disagreed with them or challenged their positions in a principled way to get banned. It's become a tool for people to protect their self esteem or to remain in their bubble.

Last time it happened it was for a post in the ridiculous "Chinatown sucks" thread.

There are people on both sides of sensitive issues doing it. Pro-trans and anti-trans. Pro-Israel and anti-Israel. Then those people claim only the other side is doing it, which is not true.

I see a lot of posts I consider to be idiotic or unpleasant, but I very rarely see a post that I think warrants a suspension. We can all skip over the posts of the stupid and unpleasant people. It's just become a tool to insulate people from criticism or challenge.

The website has attracted a lot of nastier posters in the last 10 years, maybe longer. We used to be a community. People didn’t go on the attack like they do now when they differ in opinion. People were “fun bitchy” with each other, not “mean bitchy.” Surely the people who run the website see this.

I've been banned for disagreeing over a movie. Its WAY out of hand.

But, even if people are nastier, who cares? If you post, you should expect that people will criticize or challenge your position, and we are all free to call out the people who are being truly nasty for no reason at all---and people usually do. It's naturally self-policing. I don't want a small minority of people making that decision for the whole board, usually based on the fact that they have been called out on their stupidity or bigotry.

If you click on Account, it will show you if you are currently logged in or not. If you are logged in and you are getting the no post message then you’re the victim of someone’s attack on you.

Society as a whole has become a lot nastier in the past decade - without a doubt due to Trump making it acceptable and emboldening people to be more nasty and the crazed after effects of the pandemic which left a lot of people completely unhinged and nasty.

Summary of that thread: It’s happening to dozens and dozens of us. There are indeed some bad actors whose hobby is anonymously banning people on Datalounge. So it’s F&F, and in some cases the ban is indeed deserved. Otherwise F&F goes away and truly ugly shit quickly infests this place.

If anything, Datalounge is far tamer now. During the Bush Administration and the Clinton/Obama nomination battle, there were genuine differences of opinion. On the Broadway threads, there were people who knew their stuff and did not suffer fools. When TV shows was king, people disagreed about Mad Men, Six Feet Under, and even Battlestar Galactica.. It moved fast and often got vicious.

Society - in its various silos - now sees disagreement in moral terms. If someone doesn’t agree, they either need to be educated or called out. Which isn’t astonishing because of how disgusting the Republican party has been since Reagan and especially the Gingrich era.

It happened to me on Thursday for 12 hours and then again on Saturday for 24+ hours. One was for a comment challenging the truthfulness of a pro-Israel poster (12 hours) and the other for challenging the truthfulness of an anti-trans poster (24+ hours). Neither responded but I was banned/unable to post within minutes of making those posts so I am very sure they were the post that got me the timeouts.

I'll take screenshots for everyone of the message you see when you receive a time out. I'm sure my next time out will be just moments away - probably for this post.

The F&F button is being used as censorship with the aim being that the Israel/IDF propagandists and the anti-trans crowd (often the same people according to ignoredar) can post whatever madeup drivel they want on DL and everyone will be too scared to challenge their troll garbage because they will give you an F&F time out. I think it’s possible that when people believe they got a time out for a specific reply, it may not have been for that reply. With the example above for the AI fat woman, everyone can check the thread and see and validate that the comment in question has the strikethrough. Some of the other claims on this thread I’m not so sure about. If people would like to post the thread and reply number, we can check to see if it’s marked or not.

I don't know how people can tell they were banned for one or two specific comments, if they post regularly.

It's a site that hasn't really been updated in 10+ years and it's operating based on the formula (subscriptions) - (maintenance), with the goal of keeping the maintenance amount close to zero. No actual human is really monitoring it and auto-moderation, which is the cheapest way to do it, is easily gamed and deeply flawed. Even Reddit, with all of its problems, handles it better.

I made a flurry of posts last week that received little or no interest and were quickly buried. I might lurk here sometimes, but I'll never subscribe again.

It's really out of control. I've been here over 5 years and was only recently the recipient of two time outs, back to back. I'm still not really sure what it was. I’ve been barred from posting a few times in the past year or so, and it generally coincides with my having said something marginally supportive of trans or telling Harry / Megan racist klan grannies to get a life.

I think it’s an example of people imagining incorrectly which reply of theirs got struck through. Alright, I used a packet capture tool to inspect the packets that are downloaded when you visit this website. The packets don't tell the full story but they do tell you several things that are otherwise hidden from view, including the total number of FFs/dislikes every post on every thread receives. The person who is receiving the FF/dislike can also see the UUID of the person who has FF'd/disliked them if they use a packet capture tool.

v8fairy is indeed the poster who is brigading folks and getting them timed out. He appears to have exactly 7 accounts that he is using to do this. He is also brigading the "I was banned twice this week" thread.

Lots more to share but I am at work so I will need to come back to this tonight with the receipts. Assuming I do not get a time out before then. (But I dare you to try it, v8fairy, because the jig is up and I can see exactly what you are doing.)

I think the issue is the auto ban feature is probably too simplistic. For example, I've been a member for a good while and, according to my profile, I've received nearly 12,000 WW votes - which is pretty clear evidence I'm not a troll. So you would think I'd need to get a LOT of FF votes in a short space of time to warrant getting an auto ban, yet I feel the same criteria is applied to everyone regardless of account history.

I freely admit to FFing the UK Kkklan Granny types. They only post on Royals threads and abuse the liberal posting regulations here because they were banned from other sites. It's happened here before with other groups. I could name them .

My most recent ban happened on Monday morning, after one post I made about being banned for 48 hours over the weekend. Banned again within 2 minutes. There's no way that that's happening normally. There was someone on there last week defending Sydney Sweeney and her jeans ad. Maybe "MAGA-lite" but MAGA for sure. They all claim it's the "pro-trans" loons banning them.

Look, I don't doubt that transphobes get banned after posting a transphobic rant because the majority consensus here is generally neutral-to-"pro"-trans - aka "trans acceptance" or live and let live. They're getting banned because they insist on fixating around an unpopular opinion and posting about it incessantly.

That's not the same thing as someone expressing an opinion that is generally accepted but controversial to a small subset, and members of that subset gaming the system somehow to brigade posts they dislike with erroneous f&f votes.

But the tansphobes on reddit, and a few of them here, too, pretend that they're the real victims. Unbelievable.

I was a member of another forum message board years ago that eventually closed and there was also a reddit dedicated to that. It was hilarious because they called out posters by name and gossiped about them like you might gossip about celebrities. "You'll never believe what bob1234 has said now!"

R144, can you describe it more if you truly do have receipts? What kinds of posters/content is this person going after?

I've not been banned in a week, so it's probably coming due again.

Greg threatened over a dozen times to get me redlined. I dared him to do it. Taunted him about it, even. He lamely replied that "it takes time".

I don't think it's a "feature" of the system that multiple people with apparent karma from extremely high w&w counts are getting lengthy bans for little or no reason. DL is routinely banning their most popular content providers, ultimately driving them away? That makes no sense.

I just think there is no actual "system," Datalounge is "managed" by exactly one person who just lets it run on autopilot, allowing trolls to game the system to their liking. It's neither a glitch in the system nor a feature of the system, it [italic]is[/italic] the system, or what's serving as it now in the complete absence of any moderation.

I think Greg was the last person red-lined, to my knowledge. I never see the red-lining anymore, they used to be quite funny from time to time, and it was nice knowing someone was in charge, looking out for us, like a deity.

The bans are based on karma ratio. This was confirmed by DL's sole employee "Tony" who commented on a banned poster's ratio in an email. This was in the other thread.

There are ways to counteract a timeout, and they occasionally do the trick, but you'll have to learn about them elsewhere. I would probably get banned for telling you here.

I said in a recent thread (maybe this one, there are several on this topic) that since our trolls treat the f&f button like a downvote on Reddit, we all need to be a lot more generous with w&ws and treat it like an upvote.

It appears based on the analysis that I have done that WWs do not act as a counterweight to FFs. I suspect this is because FFs are actually relatively rare, unlike WWs. A person can receive as few as 5 and receive a temporary ban.

The main topic is Israel / Gaza. Some evidence that anti-trans posters are being targeted as well. But it is also fairly random. Others may have taken up this tactic, but v8fairy is mainly targeting people he doesn't like (and he doesn't like anyone who speaks out in favor of the Palestinians).

What sets the length of a ban? If it's not a ratio but just a threshold, why are some bans long and some short? I've had bans that lasted under an hour and bans that lasted close to a week. But every time I've been banned on a Friday or a weekend, the ban didn't lift until Monday morning. Some of it seems random (the wild range in the length of bans) and some of it seems human-driven (a weekend ban never lifting before Monday).

W&W votes are given to posts that garner positive engagement - they a voting system, basically. So the posts with the most votes are the most popular, and the posters making those posts are the most popular content providers - and we8re regularly getting banned despite that.

Thanks to the techno savvy guy who outed V8fairy and its 7 sock puppets. Sure it was the same weirdo who would respond to my Nicholas Galitzine threads within minutes. V8fairy is not only very sick but very old. It keep accusing me of being some ancient music video producer from 1985. I posted the Galitzine threads because I actually had some "inside" info on his actually personal love life with Austin Kevitch. I had a relative who worked for his management company who also new many of his friends and lived in the same neighborhood in Santa Monica were they lived together for 4 years. I"ve seen tape of Galitizine giving a semi naked lap dance to an aroused Kevitch. Naïvely thought a "gay gossip" site would be interested in a actual GAY GOSSIP. Silly me. My bans began at the time I started the Galitzine/Kevitch threads. Absurdly this V8fairy creature would start an identical thread on Galitzine within hours. Whatever. Have learned my lesson here well. Although I have actual info on several young closeted actors like He-Man Mrs Bambi Kevitch. I'll never post .
