Men over 45, what kind of pants do you wear?

I'm curious whether you usually wear traditional jeans, pants cut like jeans not made of denim, chinos, or non-cotton (wool or synthetic) pants., and also what brands you buy

I'd make a poll, but it would be too complicated since most of us wear different pants for work and for leisure.

I'm asking men over 45 because our butts tend to start to fall at that age.

by Anonymousreply 124August 20, 2025 12:45 PM

I want to hear response from Brits, since "pants" means underwear in Britspeak.

by Anonymousreply 1August 16, 2025 1:18 AM

Levi. Jeans or cords in winter. I'm old and don't need to think about work .

by Anonymousreply 2August 16, 2025 1:52 AM

Slim fit chinos mostly. I like Uniqlo.

by Anonymousreply 3August 16, 2025 1:57 AM

No pants.

by Anonymousreply 4August 16, 2025 1:58 AM

My go-to are Hilfiger khakis. Not the stretchy fabric, but the cotton ones.

I wear Lucky Brand jeans, regular ones. They fit me best of the hundreds I have tried over the years.

by Anonymousreply 5August 16, 2025 1:58 AM

Gap jeans, chinos, and golf pants from China.

by Anonymousreply 9August 16, 2025 2:36 AM

Capri pants of course!

by Anonymousreply 10August 16, 2025 2:45 AM

I mostly wear shorts year round .Im in Florida . During cold weather I wear khakis mostly. I only have like 2 pairs of jeans now , I refuse to pay so much for thin shitty material that doesnt last .

by Anonymousreply 11August 16, 2025 2:45 AM

Will anyone answer “elastic”?

by Anonymousreply 12August 16, 2025 2:52 AM

502 Levi's and Dockers Khakis all from JC Penny also some Wrangler cargo pants

Still in Levi 501s, "normal" khakis 31 x 32 and cuffed, Land's End, Bean or Orvis. Winter corduroys. Also, because the fit, Everlast sweats, L. Sometimes XL. No guy needs anything else.

Hot pants

by Anonymousreply 19August 16, 2025 4:32 AM

Levi is great and a heritage American brand. I'm all for it.

by Anonymousreply 20August 16, 2025 4:49 AM

Brooks Brothers dress pants for work. Lucky Brand jeans for casual.

by Anonymousreply 21August 16, 2025 4:51 AM

I work remotely in the South. Shorts or sweatpants, mostly.

by Anonymousreply 22August 16, 2025 5:11 AM

Jeans, usually black as it doesnt show dirt/ oil/ grease so bad. In summer cargo pants, all in camo for much the same reasons as the black jeans. Also have some lycra bike pants for cycling, two long pairs for winter and about four for the rest of the year as I do a lot of cycling.

by Anonymousreply 23August 16, 2025 5:29 AM

Ditto on black jeans I used to like 501s, but now they are digging on my waistline. I do have one black pair which has grown along with my waist, so it's one of my go-tos. . Now I go for 501 STR, which stands for Slim Taper - That style is button fly, but it has a little elastic in the waist, so it doesn't dig. I also like Levi 514 - they are zipper fly straight leg jeans.

Those are my winter wear. In summer, I wear shorts. Some elastic in the waist is a requirement. I'm currently enamored of a particular brand of golf shorts with a shark on the waist band. I liked the fit so well, I went back to buy a second pair. I think they're called the Greg Norman collection.

I'm not a massive person - but my waist used to be 31-32 and now it's more like 33-34. I just don't enjoy the feeling of a pair of pants pressing hard on my waist, so elastic is my friend in my decrepitude.

by Anonymousreply 24August 16, 2025 6:14 AM

I've never really worn jeans. Since high school I have worn khakis in a variety of colors (or is khaki a color?).

by Anonymousreply 25August 16, 2025 6:19 AM

Elastic waist all the way, baby!

I'm constantly on the look out for cute elastic waist pants that don't look like overt athletic wear or pajamas or sweats. It isn't easy but when I find cute ones that fit great and look good, I usually buy more than one pair.

by Anonymousreply 26August 16, 2025 6:31 AM

Jeans, daytime, most of the year. I think those with less than 98% natural fiber look too artificially “clingy,” so either Levi’s Original 501s or APC New Standard.

Similar thought for Khakis (for slightly nicer than casual dinners out).

For years Brooks Brothers made the best. Unfortunately, the company got sold a few years back. The new owners have cheapened their fabrics, both by making them extra lightweight and filling them with fucking elastic. Would just as soon wear polyester. Fortunately, I haven’t changed shape too much, so with some care, a good tailor and a great dry cleaner I’ve filled the void while searching for a replacement - suggested brands welcome, OP.

Light wool slacks (Sand or Sandro) for dressier events.

by Anonymousreply 27August 16, 2025 11:06 AM

I can't imagine still wearing jeans once I'm over 45.

by Anonymousreply 28August 16, 2025 11:20 AM

[quote]Levi is great and a heritage American brand.

Bit they sure don't make them like they used to. I still have 501s from the 80s that look and wear great but ones I've bought in the past 10 years have already worn out -- usually ripping in the crotch for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 29August 16, 2025 11:31 AM

Once you are, R28, your imagination will get better.

by Anonymousreply 30August 16, 2025 11:35 AM

I’ve had good luck with A.P.C. For denim and G-star non-cargo for pants.

I’ve added Kith and VisVim for Winter and I’ve always got James Perse if nothing else.

by Anonymousreply 31August 16, 2025 11:36 AM

Wrangler jeans. Was always 501s and 505s but Wrangler made my flat ass look better so i changed. But it's time to change back because the Wranglers are all boot cut (I used to wear boots) and they're too baggy wide from the knees down.

Have no idea what I'll switch to. Need a type of straight leg WITHOUT stretch. Not skinny jeans, but trimmer than plain straight leg stove pipe.

Any suggestions?

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 34August 16, 2025 4:58 PM

Everyone thinks jeans are the universal go to pants choice but in reality, jeans look good on just a few people.

It's mostly because of fit. Saggy butted jeans look horrible on people.

And, frankly, jeans and fat are not a good fit.

by Anonymousreply 35August 16, 2025 10:30 PM

Buy a kettle bell, stand against a wall, do goblet squats, repeat until it hurts.

by Anonymousreply 36August 16, 2025 10:39 PM

Slim fit Dockers khakis for work. Jeans on the weekends during the colder months. Shorts during the summer. I refuse to wear jeans to the office; my first office job out of college frowned upon wearing them, so I've always worn khakis.

by Anonymousreply 37August 16, 2025 11:25 PM

I like Lucky Brand also - I like their different colored stretch pants. Not jeans - although I have those too. I have the stretch jean/khaki pants in blue, maroon, green, khaki, pink, orange - it's a great fit. 410s I believe is the style number.

by Anonymousreply 42August 17, 2025 12:19 AM

Levis or Wrangler straight fit in Black, Blue, and Olive. Dropped 75 lbs last year very quickly (not by choice) and had to get rid of my entire wardrobe, maybe 20-30 years of clothes. I have one pair of black Dockers for "dressy occasions". The weight loss seems to have leveled off, but I keep a pair of suspenders in the car if my pants start dropping in the grocery store parking lot. Belts don't work well without an ass. Only wore sweat pants until the weight loss stopped. It was fun shopping for a new wardrobe with my partner because I used to despise shopping and he loves it. Went from XXL shirts to Small. Now I have matching "outfits" in which I got pants and shirts at the same time -- all from Kohl's and Ross. It was sort of a fun makeover, and I know what it's like dressing as an old man now.

by Anonymousreply 43August 17, 2025 6:47 AM

Chinos and similar slim cut pants

Corduroy pants

I wore jeans about one-quarter of the time, but stopped in the last 2 or 3 years. I am retired now but before that worked exclusively from home, so suits only occasionally.

by Anonymousreply 44August 17, 2025 10:24 AM

Stretchy pants. Thank god the industry has figured out we all need that

by Anonymousreply 45August 17, 2025 11:13 AM

I’ve always hated jeans and corduroy.

by Anonymousreply 46August 17, 2025 11:13 AM

AG for pants and jeans. A little pricey but they have an outlet store online, the clothes last, the pants fit my butt, and the manufacturing processes they use save a lot of water.

by Anonymousreply 47August 17, 2025 12:21 PM

UK guy here. Over the decades I have must have worn every brand of jeans there is. And a couple of years ago I went back to where I first started, with Levi’s. Though now I wear the 502’s slim tapered fit, they are a better fit for older guys as definitely not too slim flit. It was a relief to find them as they are so comfortable with a proper non low waist and deep pockets for my wallet and phone.

For chinos I buy mostly Ralph Lauren stretch slim fit, they fit me perfectly and are smarter than a lot of chinos. I was going through my wardrobe recently sorting through stuff and I have 11 pairs in different colours and shades.

by Anonymousreply 50August 17, 2025 2:46 PM

I no longer wear anything labeled slim, they end up looking too skinny. I'm wearing vintage Ralph Lauren khakis, somewhat higher waist and fuller cut, so much more flattering. I also have sever pair of Lands End fine corduroys that are super comfortable. I'm also back to wearing loafers, love my vintage penny loafers.

by Anonymousreply 51August 17, 2025 3:23 PM

r35 is accurate. It's strange how jeans can really be very unflattering on about 90% of guys.

by Anonymousreply 52August 17, 2025 3:28 PM

R52 - I totally agree. And when you find a pair that looks great, you almost can't believe it.

For me, it's often the butt that is the worst area - but many jeans are ill-fitted in the butt, thigh and crotch area. I don't want skinny jeans, but I don't like baggy either.

As others have mentioned above, thank god they finally put some stretch into men's pants - that has helped a lot.

Feels like men's jeans are often cut for straights - who don't want any shape of their body below their waist to stand out. Like boardshorts for swimwear - just completely covered and no definition.

I think gay men prefer more fitted clothing in general. And a lot of straight men confuse fitted clothing with being tight - and it's not true.

It's rare to see a nicely fitted men's pants that aren't painted-on tight. There is a middle area that seems to be overlooked.

by Anonymousreply 53August 17, 2025 3:43 PM

[quote]As others have mentioned above, thank god they finally put some stretch into men's pants - that has helped a lot.

I hate that Levi's put stretch into their 501s some years ago. You can still buy a no-stretch version, but it's 2-3x the cost.

by Anonymousreply 54August 17, 2025 4:47 PM

You used to see older men with their slacks as high as their nipples, especially the slightly chubby ones. Is that a thing anymore or did they all die off?

by Anonymousreply 55August 17, 2025 4:53 PM

R55 - no, instead they let their bellies hang over their belts. That's why men used to do that.

by Anonymousreply 56August 17, 2025 6:37 PM

It’s the stretchy denim that causes the worst cases of sagging diaper butt.

by Anonymousreply 57August 17, 2025 7:46 PM

Before I stopped wearing them, I had graduated to custom fitted jeans. You picked a model and a fabric and they measured the hell out of you and, a few weeks later, voila.

They were a slim, not too slim, similar to a Levi's 501 cut style, a stiff as fuck Japanese blue-black selvedge denim, without any obvious branding or frills, they just fit brilliantly, were a grade of denim that didn't fade or stretch or lose its shape. And they could pass as something better than jeans. They held up unfaded despite many washings for a couple years at least. Fir me, worth it because I could have one ir two pairs instead of choosing from a stack of six pairs of Levis that had faded and lost their shape and torn in various ways.

by Anonymousreply 58August 17, 2025 8:01 PM

I'm old but still 32x32 and in good shape -- I've found brand called Mott and Bow, they sell cotton jeans in light colors (I live in LA) and they're great.

by Anonymousreply 59August 17, 2025 8:28 PM

R58 - I've always wondered if custom jeans/pants would be worth it. Problem with me is that I can fluctuate 5-7 pounds up and down in a month, depending on workouts and my diet.

Do you remember where you got them? Are they still in business?

Cuz if they fit you like a glove, it's fucking worth the premium to pay. You're already spending $100 or more and then they fit OK, but not custom obviously.

by Anonymousreply 60August 17, 2025 9:34 PM

Florida here: board shorts 90 percent of the year. My legs are the last part of me that look great.

by Anonymousreply 61August 17, 2025 9:37 PM

R60: Companion Denim, but they are in Barcelona which may be a complication. They fit very well, but better than that they didn't quickly wear and stretch out of shape, so that when you put them on a year later, they fit as they did the first time.

by Anonymousreply 62August 17, 2025 9:56 PM

R62 - here's a guy's custom Companion denim. The craftsmanship is unbelievable.

How much do they cost? Probably take what 6-8 weeks to receive them?

That's a little too rich for my blood.

by Anonymousreply 66August 17, 2025 10:25 PM

I've been retired for 6 years. Baby Boomer who's been in the jeans habit since college in the late 1960s!

I've been wearing Banana Republic Traveler jeans for several years now, dark washes in winter, lighter washes in summer. Slim fit but not skinny with just 1 % elastic stretch which makes all the difference for comfort and fit.

At home, walking the dog or sometimes on errands, I'll wear Gap or Uniqlo sweat pants.

In the summer I love my long (to the knee) cargo shorts made by Union Bay. So comfortable and there's the convenience of the pockets for iphone, money clip, pooper scooper bags, keys, etc. I hate wearing shorts that are fitted and shorter (and more fashionable) but will wear a nice pair from Gap for going out.

by Anonymousreply 67August 17, 2025 10:29 PM

R66 How old are you?

Corduroys are classics. You can buy them at many stores/sites.

A great look for fall and winter (in chillier climates).

by Anonymousreply 68August 17, 2025 10:38 PM

The problem with stretch fabric in jeans is that it loses its stretch after a few wearings and they get saggy.

by Anonymousreply 69August 17, 2025 10:40 PM

R68 - I'm 69. I haven't worn them since then. I lived up north until 2010. I never saw anyone wearing them in the 80s, 90, or 00s, except for a few old men.

Levi's Tapered Chino Pants. They are really comfortable (and my butt still looks good in 'em).

One reason why is that they don't have back-pocket stitching on the ass-cheeks. Sometimes jeans--like Levi's denim jeans--have the pockets too low and it makes your ass look like it actually IS falling. These chinos just have the pocket slits showing but the pocket is "internal."

I'm tired and probably not explaining this well...

R65: It's been two pe three years now, and the exchange rate has widened, but I never paid €400! If you are interested, join their mailing list. It's only about 4 messages per year, and one will be their annual sale where prices are about 40% off. I was measured in store the first time and subsequently then they just asked me if anything had changed and it had not. If you order during the big sale it can be a month or so, or within a couple of weeks as the last two times. They're very nice, or I thought. (The diminished quality of Levi's was the impetus to try these; the Companion jeans are really well crafted and the people very nice.)

Jesus, people are pedantic about stupid shit.

It's not the ELASTIC in jeans (I assume you mean the waist band) that gets quickly stretched out. If you buy the jeans with stretch fiber IN the fabric, they will stretch out as you wear them. Many people who wear all cotton jeans do not wash them after every wearing (unless you get them dirty). With the stretch fabric, after you wear them a couple times, they're baggy and don't fit properly.

Everything's got some elastic, but unlike a lot of brands it makes the pants more comfortable and not at all sweaty.

by Anonymousreply 101August 18, 2025 10:22 PM

No, r90, not elastic waistbands - I've never even heard of such a thing in jeans. I'm talking about the 1 % elastic woven into the cotton fiber that, at least in my Banana Republic Travelers jeans, has never worn out and I've been wearing multiple pairs in multiple washes over the 15-20 or so years they've been manufacturing them. And I wash and dry them constantly. And wear them almost everyday.

If your sad ass jeans have stretched out (don't know what brand you buy as you haven't said), that's on you.

by Anonymousreply 112August 19, 2025 2:12 AM

R90 No they are not. With jeans I wear Levi’s 502 and Ralph Lauren Sullivan Slim, neither of them are super slim, more regular tapered. They both 99% cotton 1% elastic and they don’t stretch out so they become baggy. I have had a make of jeans in the past that after one wear were too baggy. If if the 1% stretch is just enough to make them more comfortable.

R90 I have several pairs of stretch jeans, none have gone baggy, despite being worn hundreds of times, they never do, they seem to just wear out first, falling apart before they stretch

Anyone at any age can look good in jeans if they have the body to pull it off

[quote]Please, someone please post that they wear these

R98 I dont, but I have a friend that does. He's older than me, and he pulls it off too. He's tall and slim, and dresses quite flamboyantly. Not everyone can make that work (I cant) but he does

Some uptight twinks on this board seem to think all older men are fat, ugly and live in a world where it's always cold, always dressed up and always in a suit. You realize half the population live in very warm climates year round and most men dont even have the type of job where you would wear dress pants. Levis were originally invented to be tough, durable and cool. As in they were invented for working in hot underground mining.

Just 7% of workers say they don “business attire” at work. Which mean jeans or something similarly casual.

DataLoungers dress every day as if it were a trial run of their outfit for Mother's funeral.

That insult is not as clever as you thought it was. That would make them what? 40 or 50? Most people in their 60's and 70's and 80's have lost their parents many decades ago.

Wow - thanks for this thread. I’ve been oddly procrastinating/directionless on buying some replacement jeans and pants and had just put it on my list for this week. Long, long overdue… we’re talking nearly a decade. (I’m late 50s)

I never never wear pants. I wear these gorgeous rave shorts (with slides or flip flops) almost year round. Once though it was ten degrees below zero and I wore long flannel pajama bottoms. Life is too fucking short to be uncomfortable.

Everything about him was fine. I can't count the loads I spilled over Sam Elliott.
