They did. There's a difference btw the work camps (where a lot of people died due to cruel treatment and disease and starvation) and death camps (the only purpose of which was to kill people).

Auschwitz had a work camp and a death camp at the same site. Others didn't. Jews seen fit to work were frequently shuttled around as the war dragged on due to shifting production needs.
