I Finally Watched L’Année dernière à Marienbad. Not As Stuck Up As They Say

I kept seeing this old black and white French movie on lists of fashiony movies and ones that are supposed to be hard to understand. It’s about a good looking man and a pretty lady in a big old fancy hotel talking about maybe meeting last year, or maybe not. They play cat and mouse with love and do lots of walking in gardens and standing around in big rooms with gold walls and curvy ceilings covered in vines and cherubs, rocko style. The French is pretty easy if you pay attention.

People say it’s about memory and time or some philosophy but obviously it’s about dressing nice, knowing how to walk slow, and the pleasure of smoking in the olden times. I got this movie just fine. The men’s suits are sharp, the women’s dresses are from dead French designer Chanel, and everything is super chick. It’s a 90-minute ad for French clothes, perfect hedges and cigarettes. Good movie.

What do fellow DL movie buffs think of this one?

I saw it years and years ago, I was in college and was utterly baked at the time, but I LOVED it, so dreamy and atmospheric. Your summary was perfect, OP
