Is there a better pop song than "Stand Back" by Stevie Nicks?

Everything, from the pulsating drums to synthesizer revving up like a car engine, to the chorus which has to be the most hands on your hips defiant since "Stop! In the Name Of Love!" by the Supremes.

I always wanted to throw on a shawl and strut down the street to it.

And the video is fantastic. Stevie at the height of her beauty with dancers and sets long before Madonna and Janet made it a thing. She was a trendsetter in many ways.

She could have been an actress with those looks as well.

Yes, there is.

Love it OP. Agree on all counts, Stevie at the height of her powers, holding her own with Prince.

[quote]And the video is fantastic.

Yeah, the treadmill was groundbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 3August 12, 2025 1:14 AM

R3 Winder how many DLers recreated the treadmill scene.

by Anonymousreply 4August 12, 2025 1:16 AM

I love it and I love the story she told of playing the song for Prince to get his feedback.

He ran over to the electric piano and added the signature synthesizer to it.

by Anonymousreply 5August 12, 2025 1:18 AM

She performed that song in a concert recorded in Chicago, and it was impressive how well she replicated the sound of it. She also covered Led Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll, and did a pretty amazing job of it.

I like the original Civil War video that Stevie made them scrap because she thought she looked too fat.

It was a good song but there are a thousand much better pop songs OP.

by Anonymousreply 8August 12, 2025 2:15 AM

Oh my. I'd gladly give 1985 Stevie pure coke for sex.

by Anonymousreply 9August 12, 2025 2:29 AM

There’s a version of the Civil War video where Stevie does a running commentary, making fun of it. She drags it pretty badly, but doesn’t say anything about looking fat in it.

by Anonymousreply 10August 12, 2025 2:53 AM

It’s actually not that great and not that interesting.

by Anonymousreply 11August 12, 2025 3:17 AM

Isn't it a remake of "Little Red Corvette"?

by Anonymousreply 12August 12, 2025 3:21 AM

I've never seen that one, R7, what a hoot.

by Anonymousreply 13August 12, 2025 3:22 AM

I don't like it, the verses are so loud, the chorus never really hits like it does in traditional pop songs.

by Anonymousreply 14August 12, 2025 5:20 AM

Just an invitation would have been just fine

by Anonymousreply 15August 12, 2025 5:24 AM

The Civil War video is quite cinematic and was advanced for MTV fodder at that time.

But Stevie does look bloated, and it makes no sense.

Her commentary on the video is hysterical. She tried to write it, "and I didn't do a good job ... I can't remember what the hell my idea was ... Why are these chickens here?"

I agree with R1

I was just thinking about the 80s, and how I think this is my all-time favorite pop/top 40s song.

For me, a great pop song is thrilling, anthemic, and ALIVE. What song does that better?

I love this song by Stevie Nicks. However, in my opinion she wasn't groundbreaking and she wasn't/isn't a beauty queen, LOL. Lots of make-up and work goes into making her look good.

by Anonymousreply 21August 12, 2025 12:55 PM

Not one of my faves by Nicks. Too shouty.

by Anonymousreply 22August 12, 2025 1:02 PM

I was never a Nicks superfan, but liked hearing the Fleetwood Mac hits on the radio. My favorite is Gold Dust Woman.

by Anonymousreply 23August 12, 2025 3:49 PM

It's not even the best pop song she was involved in.

OP, I too crank it up, grab my hairbrush, & SING it, ‘til this day!

🎶 I need a little sympathy.. STAND BACK!🎶

Musically … yes! But the lyrics always do me in with DD.

by Anonymousreply 27August 12, 2025 4:27 PM

Not my favorite of hers.

by Anonymousreply 28August 12, 2025 6:36 PM

It's a good song but I prefer her songs with Fleetwood Mac. The band suited her style better.

by Anonymousreply 29August 12, 2025 6:44 PM

Why is Stevie taking baby steps on a jogging machine?

by Anonymousreply 30August 12, 2025 6:46 PM

I prefer the production of her voice and the music, in I Can't Wait. It's a bit prettier but also heavy hitting power pop.

R20 that is such a beautiful pop song.

by Anonymousreply 32August 12, 2025 6:50 PM

r30 A because the set director pranked her before that shot and B it can be difficult to walk on a treadmill sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 33August 12, 2025 7:05 PM

This was Stevie at her 80s best. Gorgeous and full of passion. After this tour (Wild Heart) she spent 1984 flopping around with Joe Walsh and did WAY WAY WAY too much coke and other stuff. I'm glad she crawled up out of that before self-destructing.

by Anonymousreply 34August 12, 2025 7:13 PM

One of my favorite 80s pop songs, along with “Self Control” by Laura Branigan and “We Belong” by Pat Benatar.

by Anonymousreply 35August 12, 2025 7:28 PM

Come sit by me, R35. We can get our jam on.

by Anonymousreply 36August 13, 2025 2:13 AM

"Baby One More Time" is better then "Stand Back".

by Anonymousreply 37August 13, 2025 2:34 AM

That song is shit R37

by Anonymousreply 38August 13, 2025 3:03 AM

I love me some Brit, R7, but that is NOT a better song.

by Anonymousreply 39August 13, 2025 3:13 AM

I'm beginning to think Stevie Nicks Mania should be added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Her solo stuff is uniformly dumb. What are you all hearing?

by Anonymousreply 40August 13, 2025 3:49 AM

Yes, OP, "Steal My Sunshine" by Len
