US gymnast trades out pants for shorts, deliberately takes uniform deductions

Team USA gymnast Frederick Richard roared to a second-place finish in the men's all-around at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Saturday. His quest for a medal at the championships went hand-and-hand with another quest: to make men's gymnastics more cool.

As part of his goal to help grow the sport, Richard swapped out part of his uniform for the competition. Instead of the stirrup pants and socks typically worn during four of the men's events — parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse and rings — Richard opted for color-coordinated compression leggings and a pair of shorts with his University of Michigan uniform.

He's a dumbass and I'm glad he got left off of the Men's Worlds team.

by Anonymousreply 1August 11, 2025 4:15 PM

In order to make the swap, Richard had to deliberately take two three-tenths deductions (-0.3) on his score for both days of the competition. The 21-year-old finished the all-around standings with a score of 162.555, just ahead of bronze medalist Fuzzy Benas, who finished with 162.310 points. (If Richard had worn pants within regulation, he would have beaten Benas by .305.)

"It's 1,000% worth it," Richard said, via the Associated Press. "If you look at these kids in the crowd, I'm thinking about them and I'm thinking about when I was younger."

Asher Hong, Richard's Team USA teammate at the 2024 Paris Olympics, took first place in the all-around by a massive margin, nearly 7.5 points ahead with a 170.020 score.

For Richard, the -0.6 in added deductions was worth it as part of a larger goal to raise the profile of men's gymnastics in the United States. Richard, who grew up in Boston, started gymnastics at a young age, but ran into obstacles in terms of his confidence in the sport. He says the uniform was part of why.

[quote] "If I left the gym to go to the gas station, I didn't want anybody to see me in my pommel horse pants," Richard said, via the AP. "Kids would say, 'Do you do gymnastics?' I'd say 'Yeah.' But I didn’t want them to search 'gymnast' and see the uniform. I didn't feel like it was cool."

The stirrup pants — which viewers sometimes compare to "footie pajamas" — are designed to hold close to the leg on certain apparatuses, without excess loose fabric that can serve as a safety hazard.

Richard's take on the uniform is one of the ways he feels the sport can modernize to bring in more interest.

Much of Richard's decision making is based around getting younger kids more invested in the sport at an early age, especially when kids start to pick one sport over another.

"It does add to what makes a 12-year-old boy decide, 'Do I want to keep doing this sport? Or should I play football or soccer, because my friends think I’m cool when I play with them?'" Richard said.

On the first day of the competition, Richard wore maize-and-blue zebra strip pants with dark blue shorts; on the second day, he wore striped gray leggings with dark gray shorts.

[quote] "I want them to see this, and they're like, 'This is cool. I want to wear this. This kid is trying to make the sport cool, he looks cool,'" Richard said. "And that's the stuff that gets kids into the sport, that's stuff that keeps kids in the sport."

Thinly-veiled homophobe.

by Anonymousreply 3August 11, 2025 4:16 PM

Wouldn’t it have been cooler for kids to see him on the team? Seems like he sabotaged himself.

by Anonymousreply 4August 11, 2025 4:18 PM

Maybe he should dress like a Muslim woman.

by Anonymousreply 5August 11, 2025 4:20 PM

I can see where he's going with this.

Trying to make them look more like football players, in hopes of attracting more young kids to the sport.

He's saying that some boys won't join gymnastics because the uniforms make them look dumb.

But all the hot athletes are wearing the Under Armor style compression pants.

That's all he's trying to do. Makes sense to me.

Besides, it's not a drastic change.

I want to see his giant penis!!

by Anonymousreply 7August 11, 2025 4:20 PM

Dumb ass. Yes, being cool is more important than winning a competition by showing your actual skill. He’ll be a hero back…..well….nowhere, actually.

by Anonymousreply 8August 11, 2025 4:21 PM

[quote] He's saying that some boys won't join gymnastics because the uniforms make them look dumb.

No. He's saying that some boys won't join gymnastics because it's too GAY.

by Anonymousreply 9August 11, 2025 4:21 PM

Unfortunately, he has a much higher opinion of his gymnastics than the international judges do. I'm so glad Donnell Whittenburg took his place.

by Anonymousreply 10August 11, 2025 4:22 PM

There are so many ways he could work against the policy without doing this dumb move. I don't cheer idiots.

by Anonymousreply 11August 11, 2025 4:23 PM

I hope he enjoys wearing his uniform at home.

by Anonymousreply 12August 11, 2025 4:28 PM

He should think twice about his little uniform protest. The USAG Men's Gymnastics Committee has strong opinions about taking an athlete who goes into competition with built-in deductions.

by Anonymousreply 13August 11, 2025 4:36 PM

Loser!!!

by Anonymousreply 14August 11, 2025 4:52 PM

I think he makes total sense and I don't know why you all are such negative Nellies. The compression pants look safer and less bulky to me.

by Anonymousreply 15August 11, 2025 5:20 PM

R15, he looks like a stupid cunt.

by Anonymousreply 16August 11, 2025 5:23 PM

I just don't agree with his conclusion that it would grow the sport.

Women have been allowed to wear outfits with leggings for a while now - at least in international competitions; not sure about USGA competitions.

by Anonymousreply 17August 11, 2025 5:25 PM

Did he get left off the team because of the uniform deductions or was he not going anyway.

Team gynmastics is so stupid now when not every athlete has to do every event, and trials aren't even trials for everyone. There's the subjective picks after the auto qualifiers.

by Anonymousreply 18August 11, 2025 5:27 PM

Grow the sport? ... Compete in a jockstrap!

by Anonymousreply 19August 11, 2025 5:28 PM

Mens gymnastics is so far gone that the best way to grow it is to compete nude. It's essentially a dead sport in college and with the cuts to universities, it's likely that the 12 Div1 programs will go to single digits very quickly. It's too expensive, a niche sport and does nothing for Title IX.

by Anonymousreply 20August 11, 2025 5:30 PM

R18, he added no net value or medal capability to an individual non-team World Championships. This is aside from the little uniform debacle.

Moving forward, it would behoove him to fall in line as there are many younger, hungrier, talented gymnasts who are more than willing to take his place.

by Anonymousreply 21August 11, 2025 5:31 PM

[quote]he looks like a stupid cunt

Your misogynistic opinion doesn't mean much. Anyway, he's wearing what track and field athletes wear, and it works for them.

by Anonymousreply 22August 11, 2025 5:52 PM

R22, if you can't handle the word cunt I suggest you go back to Reddit r/gymnastics, little girl.

Apparently my opinion falls in line with the USAG Men's committee and yours doesn't seem to mean very much at all. I hope he enjoys being stuck at home.

by Anonymousreply 23August 11, 2025 5:55 PM

Wow, R20.

That was a pretty depressing analysis.

I actually love watching Men's Gymnastics, so it's sad to hear that it's a dying sport.

Which begs the question, why in the hell is Men's Figure Skating still thriving??

by Anonymousreply 24August 11, 2025 7:35 PM

Losing points because your perception is that coolness is more important than playing by the rules smells a little like "Strictly Ballroom," but Mr. Richard is no Paul Mercurio/1992.

His stance is naive and, yes, to me unhelpful and reflective of confused priorities.

by Anonymousreply 25August 11, 2025 7:41 PM

This Ho will never make the Olympics!!!

by Anonymousreply 26August 11, 2025 7:42 PM

R24, I'm much more impressed with the American men at the moment than the women. Those little bitches are quite pathetic at the moment.

by Anonymousreply 27August 11, 2025 7:57 PM

An atmosphere of homophobia currently surrounds American male gymnastics just like it did re: figure skating in the '90s. A bunch of little homosexual boys tumbling around and pretending like they're not a bunch of little homosexual boys.

by Anonymousreply 28August 11, 2025 9:10 PM

Faye Dunaway, is that you at R28?

by Anonymousreply 29August 11, 2025 10:02 PM

Male gymnastics has to be one of the most masculine and athletic things around, which makes the whole American attitude toward it so weird. I honestly think part of it is because it is SO obvious how fit and muscular these guys are that it intimidates your average sports bro in a way that something like basketball does not. Anyone can play a game of basketball or baseball or whatever with some buds and at least pretend he's good even if the reality is that he's a million miles away in fitness and talent from the NBA and MLB pros. But you can't do that with gymnastics.

by Anonymousreply 30August 12, 2025 12:13 AM

Is he trying to make the sport cool or is he doing it for publicity or is he just a guy who doesn't like playing by the rules?

Feels like a PR move more than anything else.

The question is - are his outfits appropriate for safety? That's what they say about the other pants - although compression tights seem to do the same thing?

Oh - and no - I don't think anyone is going to look at that outfit and say - hey, that's so cool, I want to do gymnastics. I don't believe that for a second. You don't see men in ballet tights getting praise and a flood of guys wanting to do ballet.

by Anonymousreply 31August 12, 2025 12:20 AM

"Hand and hand", OP? No.

by Anonymousreply 32August 12, 2025 12:27 AM

I don't know why you all think he's doing this purely for coolness points.

by Anonymousreply 33August 12, 2025 12:48 AM

Oh I’m sure you are, R1

by Anonymousreply 34August 12, 2025 12:51 AM

After seeing Asher Hong’s vault, I’m with Asher.

(Plus, Asher’s legs are sexier than Mr Cool’s.)

I think you absolutely nailed it, R30.

Straight guys are not only intimidated by male gymnast bodies, but I think they are also turned on by them.

NO HOMO!!

by Anonymousreply 36August 12, 2025 1:11 AM

He’s black so, this won’t work out well for USA Gymnastics

by Anonymousreply 37August 12, 2025 1:13 AM

R37, that won't factor into it. A black gymnast took his spot.

by Anonymousreply 38August 12, 2025 1:15 AM

WHHAAAA, WHHAAAA, WHHAAA…

He just wants some publicity to start his own sportswear company. Heck—go for it.

by Anonymousreply 39August 12, 2025 1:50 AM

R39, fuck him. He's not getting any sportswear, no Olympics, no endorsements.

Keep protesting, Fred.

by Anonymousreply 40August 12, 2025 1:53 AM

Why reinvent the wheel, Fred?
