Side note: it shocks me that no one seemed to be angry that he flew this fucking plane into the ocean and killed to people. People talk about this “accident” like it was an act of God, instead of an idiot who was 100% responsible for this catastrophe. The accident never seemed to dent his popularity a bit. The most handsome, friendly, and humble guy I’ve ever met. Yes, I had the great pleasure of meeting him.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 11, 2025 4:35 AM |
Yes.
He was in Vermont and I was a local reporter. I found out where he was staying and called his thugs to try to arrange a photo op. They said no. Undaunted, my editor told me to hide in the bushes. There were really no good hiding bushes
I went down to the local Quickie Mart to have a smoke and decide what to do.
Suddenly he pulled up with his entourage and went into the store. All of them went in and they all came out with lots of beer.
Yes he was gorgeous.
And I almost jumped out of my car to say "look. I respected your wishes and I asked for a photo and your guys said no. So I didn't take your picture" like he owed me or something. But it would have been such a bad pic with all that beer, and he was John-John!
I did not get my photo.

Many times. He and Darryl Hannah lived across the hall from my good friend in the 90s. I also biked a lot, and he was always on his bike too all over the Upper West Side. He actually recognized and acknowledged me which was kind of cool. But we never exchanged words.
He was beyond gorgeous.

I saw JFK Jr. on the street in NY on three occasions in the mid-late 90s. He looked exactly the same in person, absolutely gorgeous. Even if he hadn't been famous and had just been some anonymous guy on the street he still would've made people stop and stare.

Yes - I worked in the dept next door to him at Manhattan District Attorney's Office. He worked in Trial Bureau 60 - which is low level offenses.
Didn't come into work that much. Other ADAs prepped the cases and then handed it off to him at the last minute to avoid press clogging up courtrooms.
Very handsome, very trim - and great manners. That's all I've got. Never actually worked with him, but saw him often enough and shared elevators with him.

R34 - I think three times. He was a wealthy eligible bachelor having fun, dating around. He didn't really want to be an attorney and he finally buckled down because it was getting embarrassing.
He left to go into publishing - George magazine - but that was a bomb too.
They say he wanted to act - and he was in a lot of plays in high school and college. But Jackie said hell no. That explains a lot.

Yes, waiting for a ride home at the start of Easter Week break at six he college I attended where he and his sister must’ve been visiting their cousin who also was enrolled at the time. Just sitting on the stairs by the quad, campus mostly deserted, when he and Caroline suddenly came out the doors and simply strode down the stairs and on their way across the courtyard. He was in a light-colored suit, and—I gotta say, it’s so true that he was hearstoppingly gorgeous, even more so, in person. They were oblivious to and not looking for attention from anyone around them, and just were smiling headed straight ahead. Must’ve learned that great, steadied composure from their mom. It’s a nice visual memory I’m glad to have.

R26, you only remember Ted from his fat Elvis stage. He was absolutely hot in his younger days. He was considered by many to be the most handsome of the brothers. Just today, I happened to watch a Watergate-related interview of Ted from June 1973, when he was 41, so almost three years older than John, Jr., & his jawline was sharper than John, Jr.’s was in the latter part of his life.

He was absolutely stunning. I staggered to the checkout and Joyce Randolph from “The Honeymooners”, who also lived in the neighborhood, was in line behind me.
She elbowed me and said, “I’ve never been so starstruck in my life…” 😍
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 12, 2025 4:18 AM |
He shouldn't have flown unsupervised with a cast on or at night. He attempted both. Stupidly.
There were a lot of articles about Carolyn having her nails painted and then re-done at a salon a few times, making the flight late.
He was generally assumed to be pussywhipped after the photos of them fighting in Central Park were printed in the tabloids. The pictures mostly showed her yelling at him and him sitting on the ground and crying.
IIRC, the Bessette family received a huge payout for their loss of two daughters.
But, still...

by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 12, 2025 7:54 PM |
Jackie’s apartment info is public knowledge—it was bough and sold again. Last I heard the owner was Jeff Blau and his wife. He’s the head of Related.
Only gossip I can share is that one of John-John’s best friend from law school (a firm partner) was co-executor of his will—along with a Kennedy cousin. Once various formalities were completed after the death, he resigned at the immediate behest of Caroline (no outsiders).
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 12, 2025 10:09 PM |
The first purchaser's of Jackie's apartment were David and Julia Koch, of the infamous Koch brothers.
It said in the paper they did a gut rehab. From the photos I've seen it looked scruffy yet elegant when Jackie lived there. A lot of wealthy people who live in such grand apartments kind of let them go to seed. They get old and likely don't want to start a two year reno project, even if they have the money.

Not unlike Princess DI, I don't think JFK Jr was meant to grow old (as stupid as that sounds). George was already going on under at the time of his death & his marriage was unraveling. If he hadn't crashed that plane that night, I think he would've wrapped his car around a tree, drowned while kayaking or some other stupid, ill-advised thing. But he was The People's Prince and we loved him anyway .

@64 "she couldn’t get the guy to admit that he was an idiot."
I used to think JFK Jr. was an idiot. But I've read a fair bit about him and what I learned about him changed my mind. John wasn't particularly academic. He had ADHD, which can make focusing and writing long, cogent essays on dry topics harder than for your average student. He had to be held back a year at his preppy New England high school. He flunked the Bar twice. But when he was interested in a subject (like American politics), he could hyper-focus and had some really interesting, nuanced opinions that he expressed well. For any number of reasons, George Magazine was doomed to fail but John saw (a decade or two before the rest of us) the how much celebrity and politics were going to intertwine. It takes a certain kind of intelligence to be so magnetic, so charming.
Anyway, yes, I saw JFK Jr. twice IRL mid-late '90s. He was handsome but I was more struck by the fact the guy clearly carried himself as if all eyes were on him at all times. Not self-conscious, but definitely self-aware.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | August 15, 2025 1:42 AM |
I don't think it takes intelligence. You got it or you don't. Which is why Lana Turner was a movie star at the biggest movie studio of them all and Angela Lansbury was always second lead despite being good friends with the boss.

When he went to Brown University he used to come into the bakery / cafe where I worked after school (I'm three years younger than him, almost to the day). I used to always wait on him since I would work 'the counter' from 3 - 6 pm, and he would always come in around 4-5 for a sandwich and dessert before he took off for his 6:00 class (I remember him telling me that). Most times he was alone and would spread his text books all over the table to study, other times he'd have a friend with him (I remember mostly male friends, very few times a female).
Anyhow, he was very nice and friendly with me when he was alone. I would always give him a small paper plate as soon as he came in so he could take out his mouth retainer and put it in the plate. Then he'd eat his sandwich (he used to order turkey sandwich every damn day, sour cream & onion chips, and a cream cheese brownie for dessert with a carton of milk). He didn't mind that this young gayling was drooling all over him - he loved the attention. He really was a stunning, sexy guy in his early 20s - and he knew it. We had some nice conversations - always asked me how school was going (I was a senior in high school).
When he brought a friend in, he acted like he didn't know me. He was rather aloof with me, and not friendly. He didn't want a paper plate for his retainer - he would grab extra napkins and discreetly stick it in those and stuff it in his pocket.

r28 I met Carline once but I was a cunt when it happened. I was running late, but stuck behind her as she slowly made her way through the TSA line while rummaging through her bag for her phone. I just through she was some older women walk too damn slow so I squeezed past her. It was rude but I didn't want to miss my plane.
Wasn't helpful since security was slow. She caught up to me when we put our bags on the belt for the scanner. What caught my attention was her shimmery American flag fitted white t-shirt. It was a few days before the 4th of July. Then I looked up and realized it was Ambassador Kennedy. I mumbled a think you for your service but she stared me down and returned an ice cold "Mmhm". I had been rude muscling past her so I deserved that.
Still chuckled that of course a Kennedy would wear some patriotic shirt right before the Fourth of July. So on brand for our former royal family (replaced by dictators).

R95 I always thought he didn't want his college friends knowing he was friendly with a high school kid behind the counter. Not many of the college kids - especially Brown students - were all that friendly to me or my high school colleagues when they came in. There was that 'divide' between college / high school students those days (late 70s - early 80s).

r98 it was town/gown which also includes a difference of perceived status in the case of and Ivy League or other very elite university. I went to Cornell and Brown and there was more of it in Providence - town/gown distance - than in Ithaca. Also I got bashed brutally off campus at Brown and it wasn't gay bashing it was class bashing. The black cop who knew my attackers told me plainly and also said he would slow walk any effort I made to pursue it. The bashing landed me overnight in hospital. Anyway John was probably maintaining some kind of image with his friends and you never know. he might have actually been more DISTANT with them, than he was with you when you were alone with just him. He might have been maintaining his status, and yet when alone with you, he felt no need to actively maintain his status and he liked you and your vibe so he was friendly ("with the help").

Yes, when he worked at Hachette. Which did his George Magazine, Published to effect "quality" for the company. It was never a good magazine, was kept running about twice as long as a good publishing house would have it. John was polite, you always felt he knew because of his press and family he felt he had to be. Hate to say it, but he was an ordinary thinker which caused the He's Not That Bright mantle he had to wear. He did bike to work; several other company titles had space salesmen that were better looking. But he did have a good way of focusing on you, only you, when talking with you. The new plane? His at-the-time joy. But with his bum foot and not really enough time in the cockpit he should have known he should not have flown the plane that night. All along his quiet way few people ever told him no. He had not complete knowledge of his new plane, he got spatial disorientation while descending over water that night and lost control of his plane. Tragic, the loss.

I never met JFK, Jr, but my parents constantly reminded me that we were practically the same age (I was 3 weeks younger). My parents were/are staunchly liberal democrats. I remember when he died like it was yesterday. I was in Alaska. He was an inexperienced pilot and wasn't instrument rated. Had he been, the plane probably would have safely landed.

He also knew nothing about magazine publishing. It's not like he started at the bottom and worked his way up learning all the facets and aspects of running a magazine. He understood nothing and depended on others to do the work. Combined with not being very bright and probably not even knowing how to delegate work it was a pure vanity project doomed to failure and his mother who actually had experience in journalism and publishing told him not to do it.
He spent his life coasting on his great looks and Kennedy name. He wasn't good at anything and was directionless so he could do nothing except eventionally be a politician. Meanwhile he was so inept in bed his wife while they were still newly married found that handsome Calvin Klein underwear model for some at least physical comfort. She was young charismatic and was like 'I'm a woman and I want a great fuck!' John was handsome and had a great body but in true Kennedy fashion could only throw a football.

My lesbian sister was visiting when I lived in Boston in the 90s and we went "down the Cape" for a day trip. Driving along in the middle of nowhere, we zipped past a well built hairy chested man out for a run and we both simultaneously said "That's John-John!" and so I made a U-turn, went way past him to turn around and drive by again and if it wasn't him, the dude was a doppelganger.

When JFK Jr attended Brown, he didn't live in a dorm for long. His mother bought a neglected historic house built in the 1700s not too far from the campus after his freshman year, and he lived there after renovations. I remember this was 'news', and cameras followed her around to antique shops in the state, decorating the period home to her liking and giving it a much needed historical renovation to its early days (other buyers followed suit with the neighboring houses they bought throughout the 80s). JFK Jr 's house-mate at the time was aspiring journalist Christiane Amanpour, who was a URI grad and working at a local TV station not far from this house and met JFK Jr through a mutual friend (it was rumored but never proven these two were 'an item').
Once JFK Jr graduated and moved to NYC, his room-mate Christiane Amanpour also left for cable news. This was the early 80s, a real estate boom was happening (especially with historic homes in this neighborhood) and realtors were begging Jackie to have them list the house. She decided to keep it for herself, (there was also a strong rumor Jr was going to take the bar exam in RI and join an old, prestigious law firm within blocks of the house). Jackie had someone who checked in on the house weekly, and took care of the garden and maintenance. Occasionally - but not too often - you would see Jackie stroll the neighborhood or show up at a nearby restaurant with a friend, where no one bothered her. It was said she seemed to enjoy this little city.
In the summer of 1985, not too far from the house, the Claus Von Bulow second trial got under way and lasted through the fall, attracting the world-wide media. Journalist Dominick Dunne was assigned to the trial by Vanity Fair, and where did he stay that summer ? In Jackie's home, which was a short walk from the action. He would hold his own 'press conferences' in front of the house before he took his stroll down the street to the court. He also had his book ('Two Mrs. Grenvilles') to sell.
By the early 90s, Jackie ended up selling the house for a record-breaking amount. She died about 15 months after.

He was walking her dog in NYC, it got off the leash, hit by a car, and died. Hannah blamed him.
Daryl wanted to have a funeral for the dog in LA. JFK, Jr had to bring the dog’s cremated ashes with him to LA to attend the funeral (and have something to bury or scatter, one assumes) and she didn’t like the box he put them in.
They broke up soon after. Jackie didn’t like her and Hannah was said to be both volatile and needy, things young Kennedy didn’t deal with well.

I worked in Century City when he was interning with a Ent law firm couple floors above our offices. All the girls were freaking out over their John-John sightings. My pal Rossana was frantic because she hadn't seen him yet. We're heading down for lunch when the lift door opened on a packed elevator full of Armani suites. Junior right in the front. He politely steps aside to let us in. We are standing jammed right next to him. He looks just like you'd expect and smells lovely. I just start smiling and elbowing Rossana hard. She is oblivious. When the door opens we all pile out. She: 'What's wrong with you. Stop it!" Me " Didn't you see HIM!" She: "Who?" Me: "John -John you were standing right next to him!" She shrieks and goes running after him thru the lobby. Rosie was not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Ted Kennedy was never hot. He was young once, like all of us. He had a fit body for a period when he was young, like most people. His facial features were generally proportional and largely symmetrical, the baseline for attractiveness. He was not ugly. He personified "Kennedy hair," the one (usually) attractive feature that they all share.
But he was never hot. He had the world's most enormous noggin, scrunched up facial features that retracted into a perma-grimace as he aged, and ruddy red alcoholic skin. He was also obese starting in middle age.

As graduates of the BU's College of Communication, our graduation was separate and much smaller than the massive BU graduation that included all of the individual colleges within the university. The College of Communication graduates had to line up right along the front row of graduation guests before going on stage. We were lined up for a quite a long time. I was within three feet of the Radziwill/Kennedy clan and saw them all up close. They were very nice and were there to celebrate Anthony and all applauded when Anthony's name was called. They all had a way of being very polite but blocking out all the other people and graduates who were looking at them.

John Jr was a very stupid idiot He had nothing. Absolutely nothing going for him except his incredible good looks. As a person he was a complete dimwit. And I understand when the Bessett family sued the Kennedys they were put through hell by Ted. He killed those two women by ignorance and arrogance. A truly rotten family set in motion by bootlegger Joe Sr who got his son into office by the mob and Bobby as stupid as everyone else in that rotten family went after them because Joe Sr at that point was completely incapacitated.
Joe Sr. Had his daughter lobotomized. Nice guy. She simply had some learning disabilities because stupid as a Catholic Rose held her in too long and there was an oxygen deficiency to her brain. So Joe destroyed her. People still don't know what actually happened with Monroe but she was causing huge problems for the Kennedys at the time of her death. Mary Jo, Carolyn, her sister. Not true according to the NY Times. I clearly remember their reporting on the post-funeral negotiations and settlements.
Of course, they didn't just come out and declare it as fact, but if you read their reporting, you knew that, between the lines, Caroline Schlossberg knew John was liable and settled generously and quickly with the Bessette family.
I think she settled even before the NTSB report was released.

Also I read that Joe Sr. would make love to his mistresses in their home very loudly even when Rose was at home even if she had company. If true it would be totally in character. Rose wins Catholic hypocrite of all time which has to be the most competitive field on the planet. At least Joe Sr didn't renounce his daughter Kick when she married a non catholic the way Rose did. But he did have Rosemary's brain turned to scrambled eggs. Kick looked into the procedure and said it was a terrible thing to do.
