RIP American wineries
[quote]In May and June of last year, Canadians imported $34 million and $32 million worth of wine from the U.S., respectively. In May of 2025, that number fell to a staggering $961,084, while June was an equally paltry $1 million. If this level of trade activity persists through the end of the year, American winemakers may lose an additional $240 million.
Keep in mind that Canada isn’t the only country now boycotting U.S. wines and spirits.

This mostly affects blue states like CA, OR, and WA. Trump doesn’t care.

All of these boycotts are just going to make the USA self-sufficient, which will come in handy when the interconnected socialist countries in Europe and Canada inevitably fall like dominoes.

r2 Three distilleries in Kentucky filed for bankruptcy recently. OP mentioned spirits as well, just not in the thread title.

Americans don’t buy that much of our own wine now. We’re not going to start

So, Trump found another way to hurt CA, the largest wine producing state in the US. Great, punishing blue states for red state bullshit.

Always preferred French wines anyway. Nothing beats a good Bordeaux .

On the bright side, California wine prices will drop domestically. They are already overpriced and there is a production glut.

It's not just Canada not buying American wines; there is a larger proportion of younger adults who don't/won't drink in comparison to past years. Mocktails have become very popular, "sober curious" is a movement and "bars" that don't serve alcohol are opening up.
I've been seeing articles about this for probably the past year, and it is having a huge effect on the wine and liquor industry in particular. I guess beer is still being swilled though because I haven't really seen that industry being mentioned as being affected.

I was going to say it serves them right -but I looked up the election results. Sonoma County voted overwhelmingly for Harris and the Dems. So, unlike the bankrupt farmers in Nebraska, these wineries didn't bring it all on themselves. Either way, Trump wouldn't care of course...

Beer is being affected. I live in Colorado where there are breweries every other block, and they are closing/consolidating.

If wineries are shutting down along with weed dispensaries, it sounds like people are just overwhelmed with choices and this is the natural consequence.
Someone posted an article on DL awhile ago talking about how wineries were shutting down because people just aren't drinking wine as much anymore. The article didn't connect it to Trump.

No, this is the Canadian boycott taking effect, look what's happening with American products in their stores. Visits to Vegas were down 400k in June compared to a year ago, even though people there will never, ever admit that the majority of tourists there are Canadians. The Vegas subreddit is blaming it on everything else but the boycott. Which tracks, given that they voted for Trump.

r23 I don't doubt the Canadian boycott is having an effect - but it's NOT just that. This has been happening for well over a year now (wineries shutting down, sales of wine/spirits crashing).
So, it's not just that, it is a combination effect. We hear about it a lot here in Sonoma County.
