Where do you vacation?

Do you focus on traditionally gay vacations like Fire Island, Ptown, gay cruise, Canary Islands, Mykonos, etc , or tend to go elsewhere?

by Anonymousreply 100August 15, 2025 3:21 AM

I'm a cruise-aholic, and frequently go to London when I'm not on the ocean. I've been all over the world (every country in North and South America, Europe, and most of Asia). Still a few bucket-list trips, like Antarctica and the Pyramids, but for the most part I've been there and done that. These days I mostly travel for relaxation and pampering -with lots of Indian food thrown in. I've done many all-gay and gay-group cruises as well as straight ones. And London is a fabulous place for a single gay man to have fun.

by Anonymousreply 1August 3, 2025 3:26 AM

R1, go to Egypt. It will blow your mind that you’re standing in front of the Pyramids and Sphinx!

by Anonymousreply 2August 3, 2025 3:38 AM

Ptown is the only gay place I go—although it’s gotten less and less gay.

Otherwise, I go to places with ancient history or famous art

by Anonymousreply 3August 3, 2025 3:40 AM

Generally, we go on international vacations. Most of my domestic trips tend to be visiting family. We went to SE Asia earlier this year (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Singapore) and we went to Fiji for a week. Portland in July, Pittsburgh coming up in August. We're going to Costa Rica at the end of September, and we're at the beginning phases of looking at a trip to southern Italy. We're looking at Naples and surrounding area, Sicily, and possibly some Calabria.

Egypt is certainly on the bucket list.

We've been to P-town and Mykonos, but more as tourists.

by Anonymousreply 4August 3, 2025 4:06 AM

[Quote] Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Singapore

Wow, how long were you there to have visited so many countries?

by Anonymousreply 5August 3, 2025 4:58 AM

New Orleans is convenient to me, so that's where I usually go for a weekend getaway.

by Anonymousreply 6August 3, 2025 5:19 AM

Met friends on Capri 10 years ago. We have returned every year since & here now...... It's beyond lovely & we'll be moving here permanently in Jan.

by Anonymousreply 7August 3, 2025 5:23 AM

Ft. Lauderdale, my parents have a little place down in Ft. Lauderdale…

by Anonymousreply 8August 3, 2025 5:42 AM

Cambodia. As yet still undiscovered by the Russians and Chinese, unlike Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

by Anonymousreply 9August 3, 2025 11:12 AM

On a cruise ship. By now the ports are irrelevant because we’ve been to so many. Quebec, the St. Lawrence, PEI and Nova Scotia this month and the Canaries in November are booked, we’re looking at a transpacific crossing for next April.

I inherited a winter place in Florida and sold it to buy one in Palm Springs which we sold nine years later. We’d found we’d rather go to new places than going back to the same one year after year. I was still working so we couldn’t be there all winter and renting was a PITA.

by Anonymousreply 10August 3, 2025 12:02 PM

[quote]Wow, how long were you there to have visited so many countries?

Three weeks. It was our first trip to SE Asia, so we were just getting a taste of it all. Of course, I'd go back to spend more time in Vietnam and Cambodia.

[quote]Cambodia. As yet still undiscovered by the Russians and Chinese, unlike Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

You left out Indians. Lots of them when we went. Siem Reap was our favorite stop on our trip.

When I lived in the US, I travelled to Europe a lot, three months or more a year. Now I live in Europe and continue to travel here, less a short trip to Morocco.

There's a huge list of places I want to visit or revisit here, and it's easy and relatively cheap to do. All the Covid downtime saw my intracontinental lists greatly expanded.

I have the airline miles for upgraded return flights to Buenos Aires, a place I've long wanted to visit. Japan is another long-distance place of interest. But looking forward, most of my travel will be with Europe.

by Anonymousreply 12August 3, 2025 7:59 PM

R12, go to Japan. You will love it! It is really the most extraordinary place that I have ever been, and I've traveled extensively. You will feel like you are on another, better planet. They are super intelligent, very mature, kind, and incredibly respectful. They have an incredible sense of beauty, aesthetics and style. The only other place I have visited that comes close is Switzerland in that it was beautiful and very high functioning.

by Anonymousreply 13August 3, 2025 8:08 PM

My spouse really loves cruises and I started going because of health issues made me want to go to places where I could get back to New England quickly. The ports and places you visit can be interchangeably at first, so you have to figure out fun itineraries (or just stay on board). Now of course you can get back quickly from most of Western Europe but that wasn't always the case then. I don't appreciate anti-cruise snobbery. They can be enjoyable with great food and wine. I'm 67 and sometimes I think fellow passengers are too old and can be somewhat middlebrow. I've been to most places that I'd like to go to already: London (many times), Paris (but not since Covid), many places in Italy, Amsterdam, Vienna, Bali, Singapore. We've also taken drives up and down the two coasts. In the US, we go to Washington, Chicago, love Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco.

Bucket list: Japan, especially Tokyo and Kyoto, Seoul, on the fence about India, Botswana.

by Anonymousreply 15August 3, 2025 8:11 PM

I always went to Europe for vacation. I started exploring the US since COVID. I have been astounded how beautiful it is.

Maine

by Anonymousreply 17August 3, 2025 9:31 PM

R17, my lesbian sister and her wife are going there in September.

by Anonymousreply 18August 3, 2025 9:44 PM

NYC and Europe. I'd like to see more of Asia but I've only been to Bangkok at this point.

by Anonymousreply 19August 3, 2025 9:54 PM

I go to Europe. I've been to the UK, Ireland, Italy, and France several times, also Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Czechia, Austria, Luxembourg, Greece, and Sweden. I've never been further east than Turkey, nor do I have much interest in going elsewhere in Asia (I'd much rather go to more places in Europe I've not visited, like the Iberian Peninsula and the Dalmatian Coast). I've been to Canada many times, and Mexico once.

I used to travel more in the USA, but now I mostly travel in it only to visit family in the Midwest and Montana.

by Anonymousreply 20August 3, 2025 10:47 PM

I’m not a guy who wants the “adventure” of traveling outside the First World, so I travel to Canada and Europe. Exceptions have been Morocco, Egypt, and Caribbean islands.

by Anonymousreply 21August 3, 2025 11:17 PM

Have been to 33 countries on 4 continents, but still seems I've only scratched the surface and now I have some health issues that slow me down. Have seen little of the US between the West Coast and New England. Intend to keep it that way. Outside of the US, my husband has only been to his native New England, the West Coast, and Florida for fucking Disney, over a dozen times, and Mexico, which is where we met. Am going to change that soon, starting slowly.

This Fall, we're going from CA to Montreal, Quebec City, and then drive around Quebec, VT, and NH, then to his native Boston for leaf peeping. Baby steps. He's 100% French Canadian and has never been to Canada. If l handle the long flights and walking around well, will take him to Europe next Spring. Planning to start in London because he wants to see West End shows, then Paris because he must. And I haven't been in years. Spent six months of my life traveling in France and am very comfortable there. Of course, he'll insist on visiting EuroDisney. Ultimately, we'll end up in the Cyclades, where my Mom's parents are from.

Next Spring, planning to take him

by Anonymousreply 22August 3, 2025 11:37 PM

Fall is a good time for that trip r22. This summer has been uncomfortably hot and humid in Quebec and the air quality is suffering from the forest fires out west. The colours in that whole region of Quebec and New England should be stunning.

by Anonymousreply 23August 3, 2025 11:53 PM

R22, you are being foolish. I'm a NYC native who had really no interest in the US. I did go to grad school in Madison, WI which was a real eye opener. I've been to Europe more times than I can remember but traveled in the US only since covid. It is really a beautiful place and the people are actually very kind. Everything they say about flyoverstan is a complete lie. I knew this was a lie from my time studying in Madison, but really understood it traveling on Amtrak on various routines (though many of the employees are really awful) and driving through Colorado and Utah, which are stunningly beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 24August 3, 2025 11:54 PM

Over the past twenty years I’ve toggled my vacation time between European cities (I try for a London stopover every visit), Nantucket (lucky to have friends with a modest house there) and Riviera Maya Mexico.

by Anonymousreply 25August 3, 2025 11:57 PM

R23, I went to Montreal for the first time 4 years ago in the summer, thinking it would be cooler than NYC. It wasn't, but I really loved the place and was annoyed with myself that I had never visited before. The Quebecois are wonderful people. I met an older guy on the bus up and I was a bit put off by his friendliness. He really meant no harm and I learned that the people are very down-to-earth. When they speak English they sound like working class New Yorkers.

I've been there a few times since, including this past February and they had a big snow storm. They just got on with things. I wish I could understand French. Also lots of handsome men. I really like Canada and hope to go to Toronto this year.

Well, smell you, Nancy Drew.

by Anonymousreply 27August 4, 2025 12:11 AM

Oh, I didn't realize we were listing all of our vacations. Athens, Santorini, and a couple of other islands, Spain (which I highly recommend) - we went on one trip to Madrid, Bilbao(fantastic August festival), Granada, Seville, Cadiz etc. Vienna, Budapest, Paris, Barcelona and Valencia, with a side trip to Morocco.

by Anonymousreply 28August 4, 2025 12:15 AM

Europe

by Anonymousreply 29August 4, 2025 12:16 AM

I avoid "scenes" as if they are plagues.

by Anonymousreply 30August 5, 2025 4:16 AM

I'm old and retired. Vacation is permanent no matter where I am. I'm content at my home on a lake. Even in winter.

by Anonymousreply 31August 5, 2025 4:28 AM

R9 Who do you think is funding all the casinos and development in Cambodia?

by Anonymousreply 32August 5, 2025 4:32 AM

I'm over Europe. It's all sort of melding together. Id be fine never going into another church again.

Time to try Asia

by Anonymousreply 33August 6, 2025 3:02 AM

I've visited and been inside at least 1000 churches in Europe. Choose wisely and they don't all meld together at all.

-The cathedral is not always the best church to see in a city. Small chapels and lesser churches are often the architectural jewels.

-The small photos in guidebooks and online tourist info sources are usually of little help; their photo selection makes everything look alike. You must read the text to find a description that seems interesting, or, better, do a Google Image search for the various churches and you will find views of unique aspects.

-As an alternative, monasteries and convents are often fantastic architecturally, with beautiful cloisters and bizarre collections, and in most cases you will be almost alone - no swarms of tourists rushing in and just as quickly out.

But if you're genuinely sick to death of churches and churchy things, give them a rest. I live in a city with fewer than 60,000 in its historic core. There is a huge cathedral and 125 churches in that same area and another 125 convents, monasteries, and ancient religious hospitals. A tourist could skip all 251+ churches and religious structures and spend a 2 weeks and not scratch the surface of places to visit and things to do. Cities are more than the dum of their old churches.

by Anonymousreply 34August 6, 2025 4:16 PM

I just do road trips. I don’t really care about traveling. Just a getaway for a few days. Maybe camping or a cabin or a historical hotel.

by Anonymousreply 35August 6, 2025 4:31 PM

R12 Buenos Aires IS in Europe.

Some of you have mentioned Morocco, how did you find it? I wouldn’t want to go somewhere that you are hassled the whole time. Is it worth a visit?

by Anonymousreply 39August 6, 2025 7:59 PM

coastal maine

by Anonymousreply 40August 6, 2025 8:28 PM

[quote]Some of you have mentioned Morocco, how did you find it?

There are maps and airplanes.

Seriously, it was fine. We stayed in a riad in the Old Quarter in Marrakech. We shared a bed. No hassles. The owner was very friendly.

by Anonymousreply 41August 6, 2025 9:22 PM

Cape Town

by Anonymousreply 42August 9, 2025 5:54 AM

Palm springs in winter, especially during the international film festival, is a fun place to be for gay men of a certain age. Anywhere else on the planet would be better in summer

by Anonymousreply 43August 9, 2025 6:21 AM

So many east coast queens on here it sounds like. I live in CA so going to Europe is just way too much time to be sitting in a skanky plane for 12 hours plus airport time. Shorter vacation spots include Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and lots of cool road trips to places like Yosemite, Big Sur, Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs, Sadona, Colorado, New Orleans, NYC, Key West, Alaska via Canadian cruise ships.

by Anonymousreply 44August 9, 2025 7:03 AM

I've gotten away from big vacations & try to do more long weekends; I wish I could travel more, but between financial concerns & just being spent at the weekend and not wanting to get out my chair, my travel ambitions have bene curtailed. I'd love go back to Yellowstone (assuming it hasn't been sold off by the time I'm able to)

by Anonymousreply 45August 9, 2025 9:06 AM

R44, there’s nothing like an East Coast Beach Summer. That said, it’s getting hotter and hotter so no idea how long it will be pleasurable

by Anonymousreply 46August 9, 2025 6:06 PM

I'm older. and I Iove history and art and culture. So my trips are usually about that. But I do tend to focus on Europe and in Northern Africa. I've been to Morocco, Egypt,, like that. I like spending time in Italy, the UK, and Greece. I also love going to NYC. Some nice museums in L.A. too.

by Anonymousreply 47August 10, 2025 12:08 AM

Morocco is particularly interesting because it’s a Muslim country that’s far from the center of Islam. Thus, it’s more relaxed with regards to Muslim customs

by Anonymousreply 48August 10, 2025 1:10 AM

You experienced on some cheap cruise line, R14? What credentials do you have to deem a crowd middlebrow? That comment alone puts you in the lower quarter of those I know. Just asking.

by Anonymousreply 49August 10, 2025 1:32 AM

Long retired, long with a small place in The Hamptons, my whole life has been a vacation. Bed to ankles in ocean only a 3/4 mile walk. Love going into NYC to a small apartment I keep in the West Village, and sailing to England for weeks in London. Three-four days in a suite at Brown's preps me for further weeks in London.

by Anonymousreply 50August 10, 2025 1:39 AM

My focus of interest and geography is similar to R47's.

And I mostly agree with Fran Lebowitz that "'the outdoors is what you must pass through in order to get from your apartment into a taxicab.". It's okay in small doses, or as a brief diversion.

If there are is no historic architecture and no art museums and some interesting food choices, it's not a destination but a place to pass through.

Some people love nothing more than sitting on a sandy beach watching the ocean or weeks at a lake house. I'm bored to death of that within an hour. Camping never. Road trips I hate and most travel that involves driving is more chore than pleasure. Modern cities or areas that popped out of nowhere, no interest.

by Anonymousreply 51August 10, 2025 2:01 AM

We go to the Texas Hill Country every couple of months.

by Anonymousreply 52August 10, 2025 2:03 AM

I just booked an off-season, relatively cheap, short trip to Rome. I was there almost forty years ago, but I’ve forgotten most of it. I had a piece of luggage stolen there, so I’ve shied away from it, but am now getting back on the horse.

by Anonymousreply 53August 10, 2025 2:06 AM

R51, I agree with you on all of that. I gave no interest in traveling to see nature and natural wonders. I would stop to see the Grand Canyon briefly if it was on the way to somewhere interesting.

by Anonymousreply 54August 10, 2025 2:09 AM

I recently went to the Hamptons and don’t get the hullabaloo. Sure, you’re by the beach but the downtowns aren’t that interesting. The ice cream is meh. The restaurants, however are pretty good.

Cape Cod is far more quaint. The downtowns and the ice cream are so much better. Lots of people milling around/-the point isn’t to stay in your house but to get out and mingle. The restaurant food, however, is pretty terrible.

by Anonymousreply 55August 10, 2025 2:41 AM

Coastal Maryland (not Ocean City!) fascinates me. I’ve been to Smith Island several times now, on Rhodes Point.

I have family in the Berkshires so I’m up there often, but I feel like it’s overrated. Last year we stayed at a very highly rated bed and breakfast in Great Barrington. It was over curated so it looked like a hipster Cracker Barrel. The owners were overbearing star fuckers. That, to me, encapsulates the whole Berkshires experience.

I would like to go back to Honolulu but I might not get on the plane to come home.

by Anonymousreply 56August 10, 2025 2:51 AM

R50 typed all of that while microwaving his gas station burrito in Downstate Illinois.

The louder they brag, the richer they ain't.

by Anonymousreply 57August 10, 2025 3:06 AM

I love Bali and vacation there quite a bit.

by Anonymousreply 58August 10, 2025 3:09 AM

I've been to most places in Europe that were on my bucket list. Iceland and Greenland soon, I hope. I used to live in Singapore and Hong Kong so spent a lot of time exploring the region. I ski in Japan, New Zealand and Canada. I have a laundry list of places in Central and South America that I'd like to visit. Capetown one day hopefully. USA is off the menu with the current administration. Fiji, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga - all on my list. In fact I'd better get my skates on - there are many places that I want to see!

by Anonymousreply 59August 10, 2025 3:31 AM

A different country every year. I get a rental car and drive around.

by Anonymousreply 60August 10, 2025 3:35 AM

It’s so weird, with work and all, my vacationing life has been a week at a time. I can only see the standard touristy things no matter where I go.

I really wish I could spend more time in a country to get to know it better

by Anonymousreply 61August 10, 2025 4:25 AM

In Provence.

by Anonymousreply 63August 10, 2025 4:29 AM

I don't give a rats ass about churches, cities or shopping, most cities in Europe are a boring. I would rather spend time seeing the wonders of nurture than all the man made crap that will one day crumble anyways. It' more of a thrill too me hiking on a glacier than walking down a busy, noisy street in NYC just to buy pretentious crap with labels.

by Anonymousreply 64August 10, 2025 11:10 AM

You sound like a person whose acquaintances might be happy to see you spend more time enjoying the wonders of nature in solitude.

by Anonymousreply 65August 10, 2025 11:20 AM

I'm old and long retired. I traveled all over the world for work and learned one important thing. I never visited any place that I thought was worth visiting again. I had sufficient once I saw a place once.

These days I only travel for 2 things. Funerals or weddings.

by Anonymousreply 66August 10, 2025 11:22 AM

R55, where did you stay? East Hampton is pretentious trash, but I enjoy Southampton and Sag Harbor is charming. That said, I prefer the North Fork to the Hamptons and Shelter Island to either.

R50 is living the dream with a place in NYC and a place out East.

by Anonymousreply 67August 10, 2025 1:33 PM

R55 I haven't been to the Hamptons, but I have to agree with you about the Cape as far as food goes. I had very bad luck with the restaurants.

I love Morocco. And I love being hassled by those dashing young Moroccans.. One time in a crowded marketplace, a man came up behind me, put something in my hand. It was his penis.

by Anonymousreply 70August 11, 2025 12:20 AM

I know there is a lot of down low gay stuff in Morocco, but isn't being openly gay there still a crime? Why would you dumb bitches support this by spending thousands of your vacation money there? Oh right, this wont affect you so it does not matter. Got it.

I suppose on a gay site so many posts will anchor on how gay or not gay a place is for them, when not interested in art, music, theatre, fashion, literature, as they are so quick to tell us.

by Anonymousreply 76August 11, 2025 10:29 AM

This year in my backyard. I have a deck, hot tub and stock tank pool I've been constructing since January . Grilling and watching movies in my hot tub post gym workout are almost a daily routine. No crowds, no screaming fetuses, no age related body shaming from younger TIQA+ types , no random treats of violence , no disruptive mentally deranged individuals having meltdowns in the airport. .I choose whom I invite over and associate with. I have five animal friends that visit me frequently three feral cats one of which is friendly and will get on my lap, a very friendly opossum that loves uncured hotdogs and a plus size raccoon who is stand offish but comes running when I put some watermelon rinds out. With global warming and temperature trends I should be able to use this until mid-October. Then I may commence some travel during the low demand period.

[quote] Cambodia. As yet still undiscovered by the Russians and Chinese

Lolz. I was based 2 years in Phnom Penh from 2021 to 23 (work in a multinational company HQ’d in Hong Kong). Cambodia is a de facto Chinese colony. The entire infrastructure is Chinese, from the roads to the airports, to the new condos popping up everywhere, the hotels and resorts, etc. China is doing the same in Laos.

by Anonymousreply 78August 11, 2025 11:48 AM

There's a lot to be said for getting away from civilization for short periods. Too long and it's too isolating. I can't stand camping or doing without electricity and running water but being in a cabin in the woods for a few weeks or even just a long weekend leaves me feeling rested, stress-free.

I could never live that way full time though.

by Anonymousreply 79August 11, 2025 12:07 PM

Go where I go. Don't need to be surrounded by gays to feel comfortable. See them in my neighborhood.

by Anonymousreply 80August 11, 2025 12:18 PM

A couple of years ago we took a road trip to Hilton Head stopping in Charleston and Savannah. I hated Charleston. It was Trump country. But I adored Savannah. Hilton Head was blah. Too crowded, traffic, and it's fine if golf and tennis are your thing. Once we got to our hotel it was just OK. But the beaches were beautiful and we went for a bike ride on the beach.

by Anonymousreply 81August 11, 2025 2:13 PM

Mexico every winter. Next winter a bit of southern Spain. Never the USA until there’s a new administration and an apology.

by Anonymousreply 82August 11, 2025 3:33 PM

Shit, I forgot Lisbon and the Azores!

We really didn't spend enough time in Portugal. Just a couple of days in Lisbon and the surrounding towns. San Miguel in the Azores was great. We stayed with friends whose family lived there. We stayed in a small village in the hills, and we went the a pig slaughter at 8am and drank shots with the locals.

by Anonymousreply 83August 11, 2025 7:44 PM

Latin America is my destination of choice. Cheap, hot men, great food, great beaches.

by Anonymousreply 84August 11, 2025 7:47 PM

And with only a fraction of the attitude and sense of entitlement of Europeans.

by Anonymousreply 85August 11, 2025 7:49 PM

R85 has never met a porteño…

by Anonymousreply 86August 11, 2025 7:52 PM

R86, touche. But Buenos Aires is basically satellite Europe.

by Anonymousreply 87August 11, 2025 7:55 PM

With twice the attitude and sense of entitlement of Europeans…admit it.

by Anonymousreply 88August 11, 2025 7:58 PM

R88, you're not wrong. I'm not necessarily a fan of Portenos, and I'm curious as to why they're so arrogant given their schizophrenic country, but Buenos Aires is also not what I think of when I mention Latin America.

by Anonymousreply 89August 11, 2025 8:02 PM

Do not visit the Azores!

by Anonymousreply 90August 11, 2025 8:05 PM

Porteño dick is um, um good.

by Anonymousreply 91August 11, 2025 8:06 PM

I have never been interested in South America. I have been as far south as Mexico. I have visited Puerto Rico a couple of times. But that's it. I had a mild curiosity about Central America, but no more.

I want t o go to Morocco. I want to return to Greece and Turkey, and Italy and Egypt. I would love to see Sweden and Norway, maybe Belgium and the Netherlands. There's no urgency, though. Spain and Portugal are on my list. Also, I don't mind looking at mountain scenery from a distance, but I don't like being in the mountains. Scary shit.

I’ve been all over the world, but I still don’t use “vacation” as a verb.

Vacation as a verb is fairly specific to my experience.

Our family vacations in Beaulieu-sur-Mer. (vacation [vb.] + location)

I don't know that I've ever heard "we vacation in July every year", or "Will you vacation after the nether is complete?" or other turnes on vacation as a verb. No doubt someone does, but it doesn't seem very common at all from my experience.

How about you vacate this thread?

R92, South America is great for adventure travel. If you want to see the Amazon, world-class beaches, the Galapagos, hike the Andes, Tierra del Fuego. I've decided that any further adventure trekking that I need to get out of my system is going to have to happen this decade (I'm 41).

I've seen most of what I've wanted to see in Europe, but any museums, castles, or historic-based travel can wait until I'm actually retired.

I’m leaving on Sunday to spend time in Margaret River in Western Australia to visit wineries and go truffle hunting. La de da.

Will you have a huge pig on a leash to sniff out the truffles r57?

I bought a ticket on Ryanair for a flight next year between two European cities. I hope it goes okay. I’ll be making sure that my baggage is within the size limitations. It was cheapest and most advantageous to cross the Atlantic to one city and then get a cheap flight to my intended destination.

Where do I care?
