I've been there a couple of times, long ago. The second time I was there was only because I had guests who really wanted to go, even though I told them it was not that good. They found out. The first thing I noticed was that many of the vegetables served were obviously canned. The fried okra (which I am passionate about when it's cooked properly) was burned to a crisp. The place relied on tourist trade since the locals soured on her and her restaurant long ago. She had to close the restaurant her dumb brother ran years ago. Frankly if she up and moved to a city where one of her remaining restaurants is located no one in Savannah would shed a tear. From all I've heard I think Paula is an old woman now (78) and checked out long ago, and has basically left everything up to her sons. Jamie is talented & smart, Bobby is a fraud with zero know-how in the restaurant industry.
I haven't paid close attention to the tourist numbers in town lately. At first sight it appears they haven't decreased noticeably. So I don't know how much the current issues with Trump's BS has caused this. Frankly, I think it's just a long time coming. From all I've heard I think Paula checked out long ago and has basically left everything up to her sons. Jamie is talented & smart, Bobby is a dope who would be working as a fry-cook somewhere if it wasn't for her mother.

About 20 years ago, my brother had a job interview in Savannah and we took him out to lunch afterwards. It was the height of “Lady and Sons” fame before all the scandals.
It was pretty terrible. As someone said above, everything seemed mushy and canned.
My brother remarked that the food reminded him of our grandmother’s cooking, and that was true enough. Our grandmother was always said to be some great cook, but her food was pretty terrible.
She was also a hateful bitch.

I knew Paula was a fraud many years ago. On her show she was doing a segment out at Fort Pulaski, a famous Civil War fort out on the way to Tybee island. She was demonstrating how they made "hoe cakes" back in the day when they literally cooked them on a shovel. She took out the shovel and then like a fool she sprayed Pam all over the shovel before pouring cooking oil on top of the Pam and held it over the fire to heat the oil up. I was literally screaming at the TV "WHY THEY FUCK DO YOU NEED TO SPRAY PAM ON THE SHOVEL YOU DUMB BITCH - DID YOU THINK THE COOKING OIL IS GOING TO STICK!!!".

What I’ll miss is the Paula Parlors behind some of the restaurants, where you could get butter beauty treatments. A pure butter rinse to make blonde hair sparkle, butter buffs for cuticles and dry elbows, butter facials to moisten complexions and make them shine…
Those shops are in danger of being shut down due to a lot of slip and falls. Especially in the final hose down line.

AI Overview Here are some of the most popular and best-loved recipes from Paula Deen, according to her website and online communities:
Original Gooey Butter Cake: This dessert is consistently ranked as a top favorite and is considered one of Paula's most popular recipes overall.
Not Yo' Mama's Banana Pudding: This easy banana pudding recipe has been a top favorite for several years running.
Southern Fried Chicken: A classic Southern staple, Paula Deen's take on fried chicken is a popular choice among her fans.
Southern Peach Cobbler: This comforting and sweet dessert is another Paula Deen classic.
The Lady's Cheesy Mac: A rich and creamy baked mac and cheese recipe.
Corn Casserole: A popular side dish that pairs well with many meals.
Biscuits: Fluffy, Southern-style biscuits are a staple of her cuisine.
Old-Fashioned Meatloaf, AKA, Basic Meatloaf: A classic family dinner recipe that remains popular.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 2, 2025 9:24 PM |
An early exposure I had to Ms. Deen was a holiday show where she made trifle.
Now, this is a traditional English recipe that layers brandy sprinkled sponge or pound cake (that’s then spread with preserves) with custard and whipped cream. You might do little variations, like add some berries or slivered almonds, but that’s basically it.
Well! Paula apparently never heard that because she used Coolwhip and chocolate sauce and threw in a bunch of crushed candy bars.
It looked disgusting.

[quote] her stuff isn't bad
Most of her 'stuff' is nothing more than typical southern home cooking that most any southerner who had a good cook in the family grew up on. Nothing she ever presented was original to her. And one thing I can tell you is that all of her fancier dishes were dishes dreamed up by Food Network food stylists. They taught her the process of making them and she then went on camera acting like she'd been cooking and eating those dishes all her life. Fraud from the word go. I can guarantee you until she stared on TV she'd never even heard of shrimp & grits before. Nor has any southerner until they were created by some restaurant chef. So many of the so-called 'classic southern dishes' you've seen on TV food shows were just creations of TV food stylists. Real classic southern cooking is simple and cooked with lard, fat back, and the parts of pigs most people wouldn't eat if their lives depended on it.

The times I hated her the most was when she mispronounced common kitchen items. And if you aren't aware, the accent she used on her show was a total fake. She piled on the southern down home hick, with the "hey y'all" for TV. When she first got on TV, before she got her own show, she didn't talk like that at all. But when she would say "I'm gonna take this 'spachler' and lift this out of the pan", or "you want 2 cups of 'confectionant' sugar", I just wanted to grab her through the screen and choke her to death.

Paula's problem was that she got so caught up in her own fame and fortune she thought she could say anything in front of anyone and no one would have a problem with it. She is a prime example of what happens to ignorant buffoons when they are lucky enough to get their hands on lots of money, and in her case fame as well. Her early recipes weren't bad - the gooey cake recipe is very good (for gooey cake) about as others have noted, these things are southern staples and not necessarily anything exceptional. I think in the early days, Paula was able to successfully sell her personal story as much as her mediocre food.
Paula is old & likely completely senile, but Jamie (who ran the L&S empire for years) is probably late 50s/60s so he probably wants to retire too so they sold the brand to whatever crapfest they sell in scenic locals like Branson & Myrtle Beach and reap the (tax free) profits.
As much as people complain about being "cancelled", Paula is living proof of the fact that when people are sick of your shit, they just don't want to hear from you anymore, regardless of your political or personal beliefs.

The banana pudding is pretty good for what it is -- an over-the-top dessert with lots of pudding & Cool Whip & cream cheese & bananas, topped with those cookies that look like chessmen. Make it the day before the party, chill overnight, feeds a lot of people & everyone says "OOOOOH!" when you bring it out. Nothing subtle about it, but you can serve just one little square to each diner & that's great after a big BBQ or chili feed.

No decent southern cook would ever dare to use Cool Whip in a banana pudding, or in anything else for that matter. The banana puddings I grew up eating had pudding made from scratch (none of that boxed crap), whipped heavy cream, and meringue. It's where I learned to sprinkle a few turbinado sugar crystals on meringues before sliding them under the broiler. Those sugar crystals melt and turn into beautiful clear golden beads on you meringue.

This is from the 2013 deposition for a lawsuit brought by he GM of the Uncle Bubba's restaurant . This shows you just how delusional she had become. She thought she could say this crap and no one would ever think a thing bad about her. She happily admitted her racist comments. Looks like she took pride in them.
[quote] Lisa Jackson, the former general manager of her Savannah restaurant Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House, sued the TV chef and her brother Earl "Bubba" Hiers for sexual and racial workplace discrimination in a $1.2 million lawsuit. During the May 2013 deposition, Jackson's lawyers asked Deen a simple question that would destroy her career. When asked if she had ever used the N-word, Deen responded, "Yes, of course".
[quote] But that wasn't the most disturbing revelation. Jackson testified that Deen wanted "a true southern plantation-style wedding" for her brother's reception, with servers she described using racial slurs, saying "Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n—–s to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties". The deposition painted a picture of a woman whose public persona was completely at odds with her private attitudes and behavior.

Needless to say none of them are happy and are saying they were "done dirty". Deen immediately went on vacation after she shut the restaurants down.

^that's a really crappy way to treat people, many of whom I imagine had worked for them for years. It's one thing of your one step ahead of the IRS (and I've known restaurants that closed up shop overnight in an attempt to beat creditors), but if they have holdings/sold holdings to restaurants in other locations, the Deens have enough $$ to treat their employees with a bit of dignity.

I watched a somewhat recent clip of her on YouTube making some fan's recipe (?!). She was struggling following the recipe and her clueless assistant had to keep saving her. The old, racist hag could be on her way out. Who knows?

Are most of her employees black? I bet they are.
The reviews for her restaurant were initially glowing; what happened? Cost-cutting?

I'm betting there's something in this whole saga they're not telling. I think there is some illegalities involved somewhere, most likely tax issues. She's just the type to think she could stiff the government and nothing would ever be done to her.
The whole damn crew needs to leave Savannah and move to whatever state one of their other eateries is located.

I wonder how many of the employees are Latino. ICE raid. No restaurant workers.

The title of this thread makes me chuckle every time I see it.
Thanks, OP

They would fit in much better in Myrtle Beach.
That’s their speed.
Savannah is a pretty interesting place and trends blue to purple.

I don’t know. I’ve seen local restaurants with a loyal customer base that closed down because the owner just wanted to get out for personal reasons and they didn’t want their restaurant to continue with a new owner using the same name and concept.
